Definitely my favorite design style, worldly, timeless, and classic. I love when there is a story behind the items displayed in one’s home. There are far too many beautiful things in the world to live in a minimal home. TFS!
Hello Too Sense, that is great to hear that it is your favourite design style and agree that is it classic! Your home must be lovely with all the pieces you like to display. Have a great weekend, Suzie xx
Could’nt agree with you more! My favorite too! Although I must admit it matches so well with my dark personality, I have to have a ‘respite room’ for myself, something on the lighter side 😆 I went through the whole minimalist phase and although I am SO happy I did, I am older, and have many beautiful items that speak to my soul that fit into the Dark Academia style. I recently moved and bought a new home and will definitely be creating this style with all the treasures that were gifted or handed down. Great timing on this video.
Thank you for sharing BecA, yes it can definitely feel so special to have items that tell a story within a home, reflective of memories and experiences had! xx
As much as I like bright, airy rooms, I love cozy, darker ones just as much or more. Especially in colder climates, the snug feeling of these spaces is comforting in the long winter months when daylight is short. A room designed with dark in mind is like a hug, and the best hugs are those from people you’ve know through long association and times good and bad. Maybe that’s why items that recall memory make a person so much at home. No, it’s not for everyone, but give me rich colors, the smell of old books, waxed furniture, kindly faces regarding me from the walls, and the thump of a dog’s tail on the sofa.
Hello Doug, what a lovely descriptive moment. I love the idea of a dark room being like a hug! I totally agree. Even your descriptions of the old books and waxed furniture...takes me straight to my travels in Europe visiting antique stores!Thank you for watching our video and your support. Suzie x
I finally learned through this video my design style. I have designed our home with all the elements mentioned in this video. I was like..”THATS IT!” That’s our style! Thank you for sharing this video!
Hi Tammy, that feels so good to receive and great to know you have a clear idea of your design style! I can imagine your home must feel so warm and inviting decorated in this style xx
One should never minimize themselves: that's the simple sentence from which my love for Dark Academia originates. Contrary to minimalism, which goes against the individual, this style is all based on manifesting your own personality and History. Kudos for this tutorial-documentary!
Hello and thank you for your feedback and comments! I agree with you, particularly when it comes to the Dark Academia style. Lots of layers and richness that is a treasure trove of antiques, found objects and curiosities. So glad you enjoyed this content. Suzie xx
Though not usually a style I'm drawn to, as an avid bibliophile the third photo ( at 0:24 sec) stopped me in my tracks! The warmth of the wood lining the bookcases literally glows against the dark moody walls and cabinets! Thanks for opening my eyes to the potential beauty of every style! xoxo from Canada
Hello 27Spiritgirl, I hope you have been well :) Isn't it a stunning photo! That library room is actually located at the NoMad Hotel. I hope to visit one day! Thank you for watching xx have a lovely week ahead
I've been trying to research this topic for a week now because it fits my personality to a tee and this was hands down the best video I've seen on the topic so far! I will definitely be re-watching this and taking notes. Thank you so much!
Hi lovely 😍 for me, there's nothing like Color. Dark backgrounds highlight featured displays plus, adds such an inviting warmth. I realize today is hugely into Neutrals which I can appreciate and have engaged in, some 15 yrs or so ago but, my happiness is shown here in so many examples of Color. I guess you can call me an old soul! 😉 Thanks for sharing and love that you took a course in calligraphy, Suzie! I learnt as a child growing up. We as a family have pretty Cursive handwriting, and we would practice all the time both Combined, for our family good times. I cherish those memories! ❤️ love and hugs
Hello Gina, thanks for sharing your thoughts on the video and for sharing your mutual passion for calligraphy. The course was so easy to follow and calm and made such a difference knowing what tools to use to get the most beautiful results. In the store there are times when I need a beautifully written sign so have found the class super useful. My normal handwriting has gone down hill since I'm on the computer for most of my communication, but there is nothing more special than receiving a hand written invitation or thank you note! I hope you had a lovely weekend and look forward to chatting again soon. Suzie xx
Thank you so much for all your videos, you are definitely one of the very best interior designers. I love how you do all different styles with great flair. You're super talented, please keep them coming.
Hello! I can see you are passionate about decor as well :) I am actually an Interior Decorator and business owner with a few retail stores based in Australia. I am so glad you resonate with my approach to styling & design. xx
This is my favorite esthetic for interior decor. I so enjoy all your videos. They are beautifully descriptive, informational and soothing to listen to and watch.
That's fascinating. Having grown up around antiques from the 1780s (and documents and books from earlier) through mid 20th century (we're from Colonial family and Dad was award-winning 1960s artist), it's incredible to me so see these designs that span centuries integrated into rooms together. The challenge is to ensure warm, well-lit spaces at focal points. The best libraries always had them. And I love the accent of cleverly cut foliage and blooms from outside--which we still put into 1870s bottles, arts and crafts vases, kitty 1950s lemon yellow bowls....people don't realize you can cut evergreen and mix it with liriope blooms and butterfly bush spears and a range of foliage throughout the year. Old bottles are my favorite.
Wow sounds like you have a very rich family history Winston, and very special to hear you grew up around antiques and a range of different styles and designs. Your current home sounds lovely and I agree, being able to repurpose old bottles, jars and vessels for fresh foliage is beautiful xx
Awesome style ! I wasn’t initially attracted to watch this because I was afraid it was going to be all about The dark side(ie Harry Potter which I truly despise) , but I have loved many of the other videos so I finally succumbed to my curiosity to great delight
Hello Diane, what a lovely message to receive. I am finding the same myself, the more styles I cover I discover new elements I love and can borrow into my main design style, which is on the lighter neutral side. Thank you! Have a beautiful week xx
I was trying to put into words what this dark rather smokey decor style was. You helped me understand it. I can see bachelors really liking this somewhat masculine decor style I love the dark couches : Wine colour velvets. Olive green velvet. Royal purple velvet. Rich blue velvet. This style certainly can create a mood. I like it more at night than in the day. Thanks for a great video. Greetings from Canada 🇨🇦
@@LV-bk4itthat’s not what minimalism is about… minimalism is about just having/owning the things which are the one you truly love. if you love the 100 pens in your collection or 100 books, then own it. minimalism as a decor style is something different than minimalism as a personal living choice.
Thank you Vicki! How great to hear you have such an inclusive design style. I also find myself falling in love with the various design styles too as they always have something special xx
I had no idea our style had a name! “Dark Academia” sounds waaaay better than what our friends called it, “Professor Snape” 😂 although technically Dark Academia is exactly as Dark Arts 😁. Thanks for the great video! I’m saving it when I’m feeling in a design rut. ❤❤❤
Haha I love that! The Professor Snape style. I can see why, as it does evoke feelings of watching Harry Potter for the first time, with the beautiful lighting, buildings and ambience! xx
I love this video. Your video has made me feel better in these times. I Love Books and learning new things and this video reminded me of some old Apothecary bottles I have had for years that were hidden away and I have gotten them out. My love for them has been renewed because of your video. Thank you, Jeff
I absolutely LOVE this video and genre. Thank you for sharing it. I do collect a lot of memorabilia, antique silver frames, and sea shells from various ports of call, which I scatter around. Plus books... of course. My next step will be framing my grandparents' diplomas from Europe and old letters. I was lucky enough to inherit old artifacts and ephemera, so I am giving many of them their own special place.🌿
Hello Erna! Wow what a beautiful collection of items your home has. I can imagine you must have a lot of fun getting creative and styling all your special items xx
@@suzieandersonhome yes, basically french modern with dark academia decor (vintage looking books, skull candles, gothic candelabras, globes, wood furniture and black painted walls ) that kind of thing xx
I've been struggling to understand my design style but this video helped me conceptualize the authentic I've been unconsciously cultivating foe years. Hopefully I can begin to make it more cohesive now that I understand myself a bit better
Hello Allyson, I am so glad you found some more clarity after watching the video. It can definitely be so helpful to visualise some of the missing components as it can help you know what to search for when shopping xx
Just stunning! I love this look and style! Once again I hope to take away a snippet of what your sharing with us and try to apply it in my home. Thank you Suzie!! You are so kind to share your brilliance and talent! ☺️
Hello Dorothy, I am so glad that you love the look and style of Dark Academia. I am also touched that you find ways to incorporate tips in your own home, I can imagine it must be beautiful! I hope you have a lovely weekend xx Suzie
Love your videos. Especially the ones with Vintage and Well Loved items featured. Have a house full myself….enjoy calling my husband in to see something we’ve already done. Validation. (:

i've never been able to find my exact style, it was parts of cottage core but then midcentury some victorian, gothic but this style is so perfect to me. thanks for the video it was very informative!
It is a definite style that I think people either resonate with or not. I would like a room or two like this but not the whole house. It has it's place but it sounds like you would prefer brighter, lighter spaces. Thanks for your feedback! Suzie x
@@suzieandersonhome Growing up around interior design, it's strange how much it's changed over the years,I have never heard of this style before ❗ This would of just been called traditional back in the day ,I feel! Do you have a video on the Light Academia aesthetic? Even though I love the elements of dark academia, this is a bit too dark for me (for the already small, dark, stone cottage that I live in). I would love to see your take on a lighter version of this style please! I'm sure there is a lot of overlap, but in lighter tones? Thanks!
Hello LIsa, thanks for watching. We have it earmarked to do a video on the Light Academia aesthetic. There are definite overlaps but lighter textiles and curated objects contribute to a lighter feel but with the same richness. Keep you posted! Suzie x
@@suzieandersonhome it’s a movie on Netflix about Sherlock Holmes’ younger sister. It’s has several design elements that you talked about in your video.
Haha I love that Melanie! I am quite the introvert myself. I am currently designing a library room for my father in his new home and he requested the Dark Academia style for his introverted activities :) xx
According to your examples dark academia is reserved for the ultra rich. Those of us who live in common housing with standard 8 foot ceilings and little in the way of gothic paneling and arches are excluded. Pretty pictures, but not very practical in attempting to work out how to achieve the effect with regular architecture in standard housing.
Hi Kate, that's an interesting perspective. For me personally I don't find this style is reserved for the ultra rich, though it is rich in its layers. Most often, things that contribute to this look can be found in charity shops, roadside council clearances and auction houses and whilst affordable, they are also often better quality than the mass market 'seemingly cheaper' pieces, aimed at people on a budget. I think the combination of dark colours, opulent fabrics and trimmings make the look appear 'ultra rich' when it needn't be the case. I have seen the smallest rental apartments, where the owner is a student, achieve this look, albeit without the gothic arches and mahogany panelling! Thanks for sharing. Suzie
This is the style that my husband and I like and I'm wondering how to do this kind of look when we don't have any interesting architectural features. We just have a cookie cutter american suburban home from the late 90s/early 2000s. Would crown molding and upgrading the framing around our windows be enough? That's a pretty expensive thing to do. We need to update the cabinets and drawers throughout the house too.
Hello Haley, it all depends on your budget and goals of course 😃 You could even start with paint, making a few intentional furniture purchased that accentuate this style, the furnishings, rugs, wall mounted architectural elements etd. Would love to know what you decide to do xx
i wish i could volunteer my house and you do whatever you like for photos or videos. I live in Connecticut. I have a country colonial house but it not decorated country. it's eclectic. i love colorful paintings and prints and music i have a baby grand piano, Tuscan dining table, ethnic pieces, natural elements clay, wood, crystal.

Hello Adriana, I hope you are well also! Thank you for your message. We actually have a fireplace styling video coming out next month so if you join the premiere then I am more than happy to answer any questions you may have xx Suzie
Absolutely! Unless it is a functional issue where you need to access the drawers or shelving on a regular basis, I love putting accent chairs in front of consoles and hall tables, they can also look great framing on either side when desired xx
As I watch this, I’m coming to the realization everything in my home is on this list. I had no idea all the random treasures I collected over the years is a “style”. Haha- I suppose I’m not as unique as I once thought 😉
Thank you for sharing! We agree - in the first part of the video on the Dark Academia colour palette we share the following: "The foundation of this style is the dark & sumptuous colour palette of ink black, earthy brown, charcoal, navy blue, forest green, and deep burgundy. These are contrasted with cream, gold, and muted orange tones in decor and textiles". Definitely open to learning more, and will make an effort to include a greater variety of photos xx
@@suzieandersonhome I didn't even know there was such design aesthetic. I bought a fixer upper. I am living in the apartment on top of the garage. The pain was a glossy purple redish. So to cover that paint I mixed the $5 reject paints at home depot with lime or plaster - I don't remember. But the result was a chalky/greyyish/dark blue. I like it. I think lime plaster creates a different vibe in a home. Then I made the Island with plywood and 2x4s. and I painted the Island with lime wash and the top I painted it with that same paint and I sealed it with polyurethane. And the coincidence is that a couch that I made myself had the same paint color...that ended up on the wall. I have so many books and I made shelves of 2x6 that I had sawn...very rustic...It feels cottagey When I saw that design aesthetic I said...I did Dark Academia by accident...but I love it. It is very cozy and casual at the same time. Feels like a cocoon and the paint with lime makes the house feel different than just regular paint. I am an empirical designer wanna be...but I don't do that bad.... There is my testament of a testimony....😆😄
Interesting video, but a significant number of the images do not represent Dark Academia but at best a very adulterated version of it. Dark colors alone don't suffice, especially if furnishings are sleek and clean-lined (or as in one photo, Art Deco!). What's needed is that mentioned romanticism -- tufted chairs to sit and dream in; a bit of the naturalist; a bit of the supernaturalist; a bit of the opiated poet.
Hello Gina! Thank you for sharing your contribution and insight :) I trust as this style gains popularity and is incorporated into more designers projects, additional photos will be available to showcase the details you mention. Is Dark Academia your style of choice? Have a great week ahead xx Suzie
That obviously is quite a wide range of styles and materials: from modern, strict concrete structures to classic oak wood and historistic ornaments ...
This style is timeless , classy, elegant , i found today furniture to be like hospital furniture ,white , grey , straight cuts , nothing with personality , just my opinion
Hello Hennessy, it is such a rich decor style isn't it! Lots of vignettes which makes for a moody, evocative atmosphere. Glad you enjoyed the video. Suzie x
Hello Aeri! While I can't see if the 100 spots have been filled yet I would encourage you to click the link and see if it is still available :) Happy learning! xx
Hello, Ralph Lauren has a wide range of styles from Modern/Contemporary Urban, Coastal, Vintage, Ranch, Heritage and more, which is why I admire his talent!.Elements of Dark Academia are seen in his more traditional country house interiors. Rich colours, warm metals, classic upholstery, traditional lighting, plaid, panelling, silk rugs and bookcases filled with books, trophies, equestrian and other decorative items. You can certainly draw inspiration from some of his interiors. Have a great week! Suzie x
@@suzieandersonhome I guess that makes sense. I don't really keep up with all his products. I just happened to see some videos where people said "Ralph Lauren inspired. " It was probably 90s Ralph Lauren, lots of books, reds, blues, plaids, extra pillows, pictures. My guess is maybe English Country? I hired a decorator when I bought my first home. I was young and learned a lot but not terms. I guess I'm still trying to figure it out.
Dark academia isn’t black on black interiors 😭😭😭 Big companies like architectural digest, Hgtv and more, keep posting videos / blogs with black on black rooms saying it’s dark academia which continues to circulate the wrong information. The aesthetic is actually based on the interiors from the book “the secret history by Donna tartt” I made a whole video about this in detail. Anyways, just trying to save the bare bones of the aesthetic before it’s gone to the abyss of the internet
Hey Lanchen! Thank you for your comment. I don't recall saying that Dark Academia is black-on-black? In the colour palette section of the video we say the following: "The foundation of this style is the dark & sumptuous colour palette of ink black, earthy brown, charcoal, navy blue, forest green, and deep burgundy. These are contrasted with cream, gold, and muted orange tones in decor and textiles". It isn't our intention to circulate the wrong information as you suggest. Would you like to link to your video? I am happy to put it in the description box if people would like to explore this style more. Suzie x
Omg thank you for taking the time to reply!! I just want to emphasize my comment wasn’t meant to be a critique on you or your video in any way, I think the video is fabulous! I know you didn’t suggest black on black interiors but i just noticed you mentioned black as a main color and showed some references. As I mentioned, large companies are associating Dark academia with black on black interiors and it has snowballed from there. I know there isn’t much I can do about it but I figured if interior designers like yourself knew, it could potentially help dark academia interiors maintain their authenticity. No need at all to share my video but if you would like to check it out to know what I’m talking about you totally can 🙈
While your background information is accurate, many of the images of home interiors are not very dark academia- many of the interiors are too modern looking and the images are more like American home retailers like Pottery Barn and Restoration Hardware. The Dark Academia aesthetic is more lived in and historic studies-think home of quirky Edwardian intellectual family. I’m older than the Tik Tok generation but my first experience of this look was visiting my brother at Harvard in the late 90s-his dorm was in one of the older (and thus more desirable) buildings and the common room had a fireplace, dark wood and wingback chairs.
Hello ProfSalam, thank you for sharing your feedback! I will reply the same here, that I trust as this style gains popularity and is incorporated into more designers projects, additional photos will be available to showcase the details you mention. Have a great day :) x
Anything but the horrible "paint everything white and put in dark laminate flooring" favored by just about every rich person in London. I call it the London Treatment. It's especially unforgivable when done to historic buildings.
I think this style is trying to preserve or cherry pick older styles from the regency to Victorian with the odd mid century piece. I find it oppressive, but thanks for the information.
Thank you for sharing Patrick! I can understand that. Could you please send through a designer that you think does it well? From what I could find, many of the Dark Academia interiors were AI generated, so it was challenging to find a large number of authentic examples.
So carefully chosen music every series is perfect Persian art of rugs or carpets has had a huge impact but stop using the word Turkish you are offending the peoples who have been humiliated by Turks and still are
Hello Ruzanna, thank you for your thoughtful comment. I didn't realise that using the word Turkish was offensive. I am referring to rugs that are made in Turkey :) Thank you xx
It is a VAST stretch of the imagination that many of the examples in this video represent "Dark Academia". Dark Academia is NOT about light colored modern furnishings in modern rooms with pale walls & large windows, nor is it about seeing the same examples you've used in videos for other styles. While your examples are representative of a certain "luxury" style, they do not encompass what the various styles you talk about actually consist of. I liked your videos at first, but after seeing the same image used as an example of "Cottage Style", "Wabi Sabi", "Dark Wood Tones", "Coastal", and now "Dark Academia", I question your ability to understand various styles AND to get out of your same old same old design rut. Your aesthetic is fine for the clientele you design for, just don't pretend it's something it's not and certainly do not twist the various styles you talk about into something they are not. Unsubscribed.
That’s more than fine if you wish to unsubscribe 😃We are always open to constructive criticism and feedback that we can take on board but I’d prefer not to have negative energy within our UA-cam community. Hope you find what you are looking for!

Hello Melinda, it feels great to hear you appreciate the information and delivery of the videos! Have a lovely week ahead xx
I wouldn't say it's minimalistic! Quite the opposite with all the art, paintings, books, memorabilia, mirrors, drapes, cushions... 🙂
@@LV-bk4itthat’s not what minimalism is about… minimalism is about just having/owning the things which are the one you truly love. if you love the 100 pens in your collection or 100 books, then own it. minimalism as a decor style is something different than minimalism as a personal living choice.
Truly beautiful, you have done it again Susie just so timeless and classic

Do you have a video on the Light Academia aesthetic? Even though I love the elements of dark academia, this is a bit too dark for me (for the already small, dark, stone cottage that I live in). I would love to see your take on a lighter version of this style please! I'm sure there is a lot of overlap, but in lighter tones? Thanks!
Hello LIsa, thanks for watching. We have it earmarked to do a video on the Light Academia aesthetic. There are definite overlaps but lighter textiles and curated objects contribute to a lighter feel but with the same richness. Keep you posted! Suzie x

For the past 52 years people called my style “Introvert” hahaha So nice to have a name.

Wait but dark academia isn’t black on black interiors 👀
Thank you for sharing! We agree - in the first part of the video on the Dark Academia colour palette we share the following:
"The foundation of this style is the dark & sumptuous colour palette of ink black, earthy brown, charcoal, navy blue, forest green, and deep burgundy.
These are contrasted with cream, gold, and muted orange tones in decor and textiles". Definitely open to learning more, and will make an effort to include a greater variety of photos xx
I didn't know that I already decorated my apartment with Dark Academia Style....😊🥰
Wow! I’d love to see or read how you did it! Are you enjoy the moody aesthetic? S xx
I have so many books and I made shelves of 2x6 that I had sawn...very rustic...It feels cottagey
When I saw that design aesthetic I said...I did Dark Academia by accident...but I love it.

Is Ralph Lauren dark academia?
Contemporary Steampunk
Dark academia isn’t black on black interiors 😭😭😭
Big companies like architectural digest, Hgtv and more, keep posting videos / blogs with black on black rooms saying it’s dark academia which continues to circulate the wrong information.

Hello Seattlebeard, it is great to hear your personal design preference. Are you referring to a particular look in this video or in general? xx
