You could have easily adding a spinning servo on the block right before where the pistons are attached and will rotate the ENTIRE suction cup assembly left or right.
Power:Speed is the power to speed ratio of the motor. If it were called gear ratio with a description saying a lower number means a higher output speed and less torque then that would be more helpful
I think with the first design if you connected the two outer legs together and had them on a free floating bearing that would solve your synchronization problem.
If you can see and check if there is node that can reverse an input and have it set to toggle than you can have a reverse gear basically to change or reverse the sequence. You will or might need to have an adjustment set of table to be able to adjust the reverse the change.

(Cos(x)+1)/2 will get you a continuous wave from 1 to 0 and back to 1. If you can set the suction cups to toggle at 1 and 0, then you could use the value of the wave function to control the motion or position of one set of pistons and then have the other set either doing the opposite or controlled by another cos that's offset by π. You might also want a "ready" button that fully extends and activates one set of pistons before the sequence starts.

When I saw suction pads I immediately thought of a suction cup tank. A tank but it replaces its normal treads with ones with suction cups.
To back up or down... get it? You can just invert your original timings. So the suction activates when the pistons are extending
