But what many didn't know was that this hospital was harbouring a huge secret that would soon expose several doctors and a CEO in a massive fraud scheme. What they were doing to patients behind close doors could only be described for many as a hospital of horrors.

A big example of why healthcare should never, EVER, be run for-profit.
fr, i was literally thinking "and why is it a bad thing if a hospital doesnt make a profit???" is it not good enough to operate at costs?
My dad says 2 things should never be for profit - hospitals and prisons/jails. Both are needed, but when you make them for profit, it starts being about trying to squeeze profit out of people leading to substandard care.
(And before anyone says "but prisoners deserve to be treated badly!" keep in mind that a for profit jail has an interest in getting people behind bars. So in places with powerful for profit incarceration lobbies, you get things like unreasonably huge traffic and parking fines. Oh you cant pay it? Jail. Or crazy long sentences for no-injured party simple things. Places with powerful for profit prison lobbies *still* havent legalized pot. Wonder why?)
Yes I agree!
That's what an HMO is, medicine for profit. Per Google, that's what Kaiser Permanente is.
It's so bad because even the non-profits are "for-profit" if that makes sense.
Amputating someone's foot because they have a toenail infection is one of the single most horrific things I've ever heard of. What the actual fuck is wrong with these people?!
It's disgusting. And the woman who was given a hysterectomy for a stomach ache, the man who died of a heart attack after a heart procedure he didn't need, etc. They were purely evil.
Greed
@@IK_4I heard about that, and I agree with you 💯%, those doctors at Edgewater Hospital were like parasites feeding on healthy hosts!😡
What's wrong with the entire world: money.
Wake up babe, new Petal Palmer just dropped!
DR Cubria looks like Gacy! But Nursing homes are still run in same theme,if an MD doesn't bring in pts, they're out.And a hospital I worked at coached me to urge pts to switch MDs,(pirating)creating animosity & tension because I preferred original MD.Yes I'm so happy I retired 2024!!!!Petal your vids are so informative and done so well🎉🎉🎉
Riiiight?! ❤
Yaaaaasss ❤
I love when she post 😭🫶🏽
so true crona
The luxury combined with negligence makes it sort of like the hospital edition of the Titanic.
lmfao true
You know it’s wild when Petal’s reading people’s charges and there’s still over half an hour left 😧
Edgewater feels like a fallout location
I was literally about to comment that.
The whole thing feels like a vault-tec experiment
read dead more like
Or BioShock
funny thing, its literally a location in outer worlds - very fitting, considering the game goes hard on the dystopian space capitalism
@@fromthewhales Oh yeah! That's why it sounded familiar. Edgewater, the damp nasty town with the fish cannery
Just 21 months?? People have gotten years longer sentences for stealing a candy bar.
Having a button to lock your office door is crazy 😳
Unfortunately, it seems to be quite common!
Be safe!

Matt Lauer had one of those...
Damn. I want one of those!!

Bond villain behaviour
medical malpractice is so much better than regular true crime videos imo. because we usually separate ourselves from violent crimes, as things we watch doesn't happens daily to us. But doctors knowingly performing not needed procedures is scary. cuz we all go to doctors at different points in our lives pretty much from moment of our conception to our imminent death
Agreed
Exactly.
Damn straight. And If Edgewater Hospital was still around, and those doctors from hell were still cooking up shenanigans of any kind, you, me, everyone one of us would be their next batch of victims.
Yaaayy! I suggested this case to you on Instagram, and now you're finally doing it🥰 I lived in Edgewater during the operation of the hospital and its unfortunate collapse. My dad's girlfriend passed away from a brain aneurysm in Edgewater Hospital, and her children always suspected malpractice because they made her wait 1 hour and 40 minutes in the emergency room after being dropped off by paramedics. Thank you for doing this case Petal!!❤
We're so sorry for your loss 😔
@danacarter9147 Thank you dear❤️
I’m so sorry for your loss, that’s terrible…seems you might be right about malpractice. Also - Very cool! I’m so glad you suggested it and that Petal covered this. You picked the right person! She did an excellent job, as she always does. I like her attention to detail.
Aneurysm has to be taken care of immediately. One hour and fourty minutes? That's way too long. Even if your dad's girlfriend had survived, she probably would have been severely disabled. It's terrible you can't prove the malpractice. I hope her children are at peace at least, losing a mother is awful, especially like this.
I used to live across the street from the abandoned hospital!!! So excited to get the full scoop on the hints neighbors would drop about why it went out of business.
I don't know if anyone's done a recent deep dive on Willowbrook School. It's not really a mystery (institutions for developmentally disabled people existed for decades in this country, and there was some awareness of how patients were treated there as long ago as the 1960s) but the media exposed it back in the 1980s before campaigns to close it were successful. I'm not sure if many people under the age of maybe 40 know about it; I do because I'm disabled, from New York, and I saw a psychiatrist who worked with pediatric patients there in medical school. There needs to be more awareness of what happened in these places even in the late 20th century and that disabled people need to be better integrated into their communities, not isolated and left to decline.
Ever heard of Rise?
EMILY AMMAN=Yes that was Geraldo Riveras expose.Scandalous!!!It's on You Tube!🎉
I would love to see petal make a video about this. I'm a direct support assistant in NY and care for people with disabilities, and we are made to watch a short video about Willowbrook as part of our training. It's something I knew nothing about until I got this job and I think more people should be aware of it
As a New Yorker, I remember. Its kind of the reason why we have this current problem with homeless & mentally ill people on the streets. Willowbrook hospital & other big mental asylums had horrible conditions and instead of making improvement- they just figured it would be better (cheaper-the country was in a recession in the 70s) to close them all down and send patients to independent living or small supportive housing. Pretty much, the prison system had to pick up the slack. Now, the prisons don't want them so they don't get remanded & are pushed back onto the street to roam and put other in danger.
They should have kept the government-funded asylums and improve the care/conditions.
The exposé was made by a young Geraldo Rivera. He was an amazing journalist.
georgia marie did a video on willowbrook recently!
Bro imagine getting only 21 months for this shit out of a max 50 year sentence
he probably paid off the judge
You should look into the documentary “Collective.” It’s about a hospital in Romania that starts getting exposed for corruption after victims from a nightclub fire started mysteriously dying while in the burn unit. The corruption just keeps going and going and eventually, everything about the healthcare industry starts getting exposed.
It was such a good documentary, I’d love to see your take on it!
Do you know where it ca be found? It sounds fascinating (and sad).
i’m going through a hard time rn, and when i say that seeing a new upload today genuinely brought me comfort, i mean it wholeheartedly.
the videos you create and post are worth so much more than just the content they hold. i hope the people closest to you let you know how important and cherished you are
Edgewater is the name of a well-known and pricy hotel in downtown Seattle. I had to do a double-take when I read the caption of this video. I read it so quickly and ended on “Horrors of Edgewater”
Edit: I am so glad that I came across your channel. It is so infuriating that hospitals (and the government ) have abused and manipulated people who were just looking for help. That's a common theme in our history.
It's a particularly American problem. I come from a country where healthcare is free and not run for profit so the American system seems outright malicious to me.
@jacinthmcintosh3059 I'm not English and I'm happy to pay tax because it covers my Healthcare, the infrastructure of my country, the unemployed and housing challenged, access to education and affordable public transit. Plus the wait time for surgery here is on average 2 months. Keep coping.
@jacinthmcintosh3059
£100 a month for free health care sounds great. I pay roughly $120 a month for health insurance in the US. And it has an $8000 deductable. So, I am at minimum paying $8000 before coverage even starts. And even *then* the insurance gets to decide what they pay or cover. They can decide something you absolutely need to function isnt covered. After you get it. So youre on the hook for unbelievable amounts of money, sometimes $30k-40k. And *even if they do* cover it, they dont cover all of it. Its *normal* here to end up with thousands and thousands of dollars in medical bills if you have a medical event. Or just go without.
Oh, and it still takes months to schedule a surgery.
I come from a medical family background from Illinois. I can't believe I've never heard this story! Thanks Petal. Now I can become obsessed!
Petal, when I first discovered you and your channel, I was delighted to find someone so interesting and covering great topics. Thank you for being you and making this channel come to life. The way you tell these stories really makes me feel and know that you actually have concern and heartfelt care about what you research. Much appreciation. With love from Canada.
This is the stuff of nightmares, beyond any horror movie:(
Really? What kind of horror movies are you watching? Willie Wonka, Fantasia, Snow White?
My mum has a phd and she says that you can always tell who has a big ego based on if they make you call them dr or not.
I had a school principal who dead ass corrected my 10 yr old self when I called her “Ms. Ames” and said “no it’s Dr. Ames” (disclaimer: she was awful)
Very true!!!
@@karma_in_affect Yeah my science teacher and maths teacher in year 7 both had phds, the maths teacher would always make us say dr, she was like the worst maths teacher i've ever had
@@immyg_563 especially when it comes with kids like even if you have a phd most kids aren’t going to understand that your title is technically “dr” so it’s silly that they can’t just let it slide for literal children that don’t know or care💀
I work in a hospital as a physical therapist, my favorite doctor is the one who just has me call him Brendan lol
Oh, I never knew this had occurred at Edgewater. I always used to watch videos of people exploring it once it was abandoned and never knew the history. It's so sad this had happened, I can't understand why people even do this, it's so sad and evil. They just want money and never cared about the patients.
Yesssss i love me some Petal! Thank-you for calling these people out!!!
Idk if you've covered it yet but you should really do a video on the University of Cincinnati Radiation Trials.
Your channel is so underrated! I love it.
Petal: 👸🏾”Verry deep dive”….
Me: 🍿😳
Petal - your subscriber count did exactly what I predicted!! Good for you!! You're only a couple viral videos away from reaching that 500k-1M mark. You will be a wonderful find to newbies because now you have a very interesting body of work accrued. I first commented when you had under 10k & thought you were great. UA-cam at-large agrees! Just wanted to say congrats on the growth & as an "original" fan, I'm happy for ya. ❤
This is what happens when you remove actually practitioners of medicine from hospital leadership. Even when hospitals attempt to backtrack and hire nurses and physicians in leadership roles, it's usually those who spent less than a year working in the medical field, practitioners in name only.
I'm shocked and amazed that the hospital was able to be open for so long.
Never jumped faster into a video, love your content!
Nothing like the rush of serotonin from seeing Petal Palmer just uploaded tbqh
This is sickening!! I can't even! 😡
Never trust a Rogan. All they care about is money, they don't care whose lives they ruin. I know precisely 2 Rogans and they both suck, therefore 100% of Rogans are bad people.
Science!
Lady, you are good. What a convoluted story. And you made sense of it.
you’re one of my favorite youtubers. there’s something about how clear you speak and how kind you are.
right on time!
I always look forward to your videos Petal ☺️
i really look forward to your videos they’re so well researched and you have such a comforting presence. never stop ❤️
Have you heard of Alberta Hospital in Edmonton? It has a controversial past I hear.
Definitely would b a great doc eh… I’m from Scotia
Oregon State Hospital
Anyone?
Digging this channel as it feels to me way better researched and engaging than most big youtubers. Please keep up the good work!
The 💀 on bookcase with the lamp, nice.
Well done! Thanks for sharing this incredible story.
Hi Petal!!! Nice to see you.
Your videos are always so perfectly researched. And I love your voice and the style you tell the stories❤
Thanks for posting, hope you're feeling good Petal!
Seeing that you posted a new video made my whole day! 🎉
it’s a good day petal posted 💋
Yessss been waiting Ms Petal and low and behold here it is!
This is horrific but unfortunately unsurprising. I myself were in a situation where it became obvious to me that the doctor was recommending a very invasive and very expensive procedure. Without much detail: I sought a second opinion and was told that the procedure in question wasn't even recommend these days for such mild cases as mine.
i took a class on medicine and society last year-- we talked a lot about social determinants of health and racial + socioeconomic disparities in healthcare and health equity. I'm literally sending this video to my professor as soon as I finish it. I particularly find the health screening initiatives being used to maltreat patients and STEAL THEIR APARTMENTS particularly relevant and insidious, especially given how recently this occured, certainly still remembered by people affected.
Great video as always! Thanks Petal😃
Yessss. Saving my Sunday! Thanks Petal.
Thank you, Petal. Your videos are very informative and you deliver in a very smooth, matter of fact way. Thank you for a wonderful channel and well researched, presented videos 🙏
Thanks, Petal, another good one.❤
Thanks for another great video, I love your work!
Wow incredible story!!! Great coverage!!! Thanx!!💙
Really appreciate the research and effort you put into these videos! 🎉
THANK YOUUUUUUUU I LOVED HOW YOU TOLD THISS. Such an eye opener channel
I worked for the British NHS for many years in several London hospitals. I cannot imagine this level, or anything close, occurring at any of them. Although...I wouldn't rule it out if our NHS ever goes.
Wow! Amazing story. Thank you Petal.
I’m in health policy with a focus in health disparities, so I’m in love with your channel and the awareness you are raising.
People assume hospitals have some benevolent motive when they are actually profit-driven corporations that are just as bad, if not worse, than the drug companies. They abuse patients and providers.
this was so interesting I had Never heard of it before! nice vid loved it Petal!
You do such great research!
Your content about medical horror stories is fascinating. I'm really enjoying the financial aspect of this video.
Welp, I’m going to go mosey down this rabbit hole. Thank you for taking the time to make this informative video ✨💛✨
My fave lady youtuber. Another amazingly researched vid, well done 👏.
Ugh this hospital had so much potential, it must've been so groundbreaking for that time. Such a shame!
wow this video wa VERY informative and with full of details, great job and thank you for bringing this case to us!
This is like Kids for Cash. Excellent video Petal.
Hiiiiii love your videos! Perfect start to my monday with a cup of tea and some Petal
Girl, you crushed it. Amazing video.
Just want to say that I came across your channel recently, and i love how well your vids are researched and your presenting style :) I always feel like i've watched/listened to a really good documentary afterwards rather than the mental bubble gum that some vids can sadly end up being X
I’m in the Uk & I found your channel & it’s excellent.
Easily my favorite channel
So many cases from your channel have the ability to stick with me for a long time. This one probably will too, because the complete lack of justice pissed me of so much
wow, this is a wild story. ty for covering it
Just found your channel last night and i am hooked you have such a beautiful and caring voice I can listening to all day ❤️
Thank you for the excellent, interesting and educational content
Hi Petal, I'm just concerned but it probably is nothing. Have you had your thyroid checked? Why I ask is because your neck where the thyroid is seems a little swollen. I had the same before I was diagnosed. If it's nothing then great. I could be wrong and out of place, so apologies if that's the case.
I was going to ask the same thing!
Not just her neck but right off the bat, it looked like her left eye, so the one on the right hand side of the screen looked like it was bulging a little to me.
she's currently undergoing chemotherapy for leukaemia (not sure if you knew or not), which, when paired with steroids (it often is), can result in water retention and swelling ❤
Well she’s having meds for leukemia, which could explain the swling?
@@lilyberne I realize this.
I'm just not as familiar with the side effects from that as I am in thyroid issues.
Yikes. This reminds me of how exploitive Psych facilities are to this day. At the one I was at.
You weren't allowed to leave, the staff didn't really care, and they extended your stay so they could milk your insurance for money. Drs even looking down on PTs and lying about them consenting to a release date. And specifically during my stay, there was a convicted SA offender committing crimes within the facility.
Some patients not even getting a copy of their medical bill of rights or knowing they could deny treatment. Meanwhile police could just bring you back if you wanted to escape. It really felt like prison, despite the law saying "you have the same rights within the hospital as you do on the outside of the hospital".
And THIS is why I do a ton of research on medical issues and procedures.... I'm not a medical professional, but I have a pretty good idea how things work... I'm not gonna get scammed.... this makes me soooo mad.... doctors are supposed to help people, not hurt them!
Thank you for your videos I watch during my lunch breaks
perfect timing ♡ now i have something to listen to in the background while i draw :3
It's so deliciously weird hearing stories like this in your adorable little voice
Good afternoon petal. ❤. You’re looking beautiful as always. I’ve never heard of this case. Terrible 😢
“Worked 25 hours” 😂😂😂😂😂
I love your chill vibes and your natural beauty!!!
PETAL YOU'RE BACK
I just stumbled upon your page an wow...I love it.
Good God Almighty! What a story. To have had this happen within my lifetime is bad enough. But for the deaths of innocent, poor people the sentences passed down were outrageous. How come this main culprit feigns a "come to Jesus moment" and is transformed. A leopard doesn't change spots. Once a sociopath, always one. And Petal, as far as Joint Commission on the Accreditation of hospitals, they are PAID to inspect and certify hospitals. I have witnessed hospitals spending tens of thousands to get their facilities ready for Joint Commission "unannounced" visits. They used to be announced. I'm an old retired nurse. I know where all the skeletons hide. But this story is infamous, yet Medicare and Medicaid fraud continues unchecked.
Petal we love your content
Hi Petal! I'm new to your channel. Looking forward to listening!
Whoo! A Petal Palmer vid 😁
I would be so so interested to hear your take on the macchiarini case.
Hey Petal! Nice to see you and stoked for the new video. I'm always interested in what hospitals and doctors do to people and the fake bs they make up. I trust maybe 20% of doctors. And hospitals.
What they've done to me and also family and friends of mine is absolutely 💯 disgusting.
The one here needs to be heavily investigated do to malpractice and treating people like complete garbage.
I'm not phased by what i hear about these monsters.
Thank you Petal for telling us these stories so people are aware. 🌼🌿🌻🧡
Yassss! This is another amazing video
This was very interesting thank you so much .wow
New petal palmer vid!!!

Hey Petal! I’d love to see a video on David Reimer! Fascinating/devastating case
I'm gonna come back to this👏👏👏👏
