  • My horse Mae having a seizure. She was seizure-free for months. She is under the care of a vet and normally in an arena in case of these episodes. Another horse was exercising and she was put up here in the spare pen. We are once again trying to determine why these are happening. Please note: She did NOT hurt herself. The limping near the end is residual effects. After her seizure completed, she went right back to normal.

    I’m quite glad to find someone who’s not dumb enough to try and help an animal who is having a seizure, much less a 1,000 pound animal’s seizure.
    A lot of horse people I know have tried to “help” the horse, and they end up with broken bones or death because of the horse running straight into them or crushing them.
    I’m glad the horse itself is ok, and I’d say you handled it quite well 😊

      Multi-Fandomist No kidding! I'd say it's common sense, but it's not so common anymore. Thankfully these episodes happen mostly at feeding time so it's relatively easy to 'predict'. We take precautions, always. Only three people are allowed to handle this mare (besides the vets and their assistants - for whom she misbehaves her worst).

    • @bones6861
      @bones6861 6 років тому +5

      Oh, I bet that's fun to deal with. Though it's good that you at least have time frames for when they happen. Helps with preparation for them. And I hope the vets handle her well, poor baby needs it despite what she may think!

    • @ZenithFlame
      @ZenithFlame  6 років тому +6

      Multi-Fandomist Oh, the vets are SO patient with her. This horse will basically dance with you when on lead. Very respectful. Very responsive. Stays right at you shoulder. Stands for the ferrier. Just add a vet with a syringe and kaplooey... Totally different horse. Her vets are persistent, calm, and knowledgeable so that's a blessing.

    • @bones6861
      @bones6861 6 років тому +3

      That's some damn good vets right there. Though, I wonder if something happened with her and another vet.

    • @ZenithFlame
      @ZenithFlame  6 років тому +2

      Multi-Fandomist Nothing at all out of the normal treatment parameters. NO vet has ever harmed her - we wouldn't have tolerated that. She's like some people who dislike doctors; doesn't like being poked by needles for blood draws. We're thankful for the vets who are patient enough to put up with her 'mare moments'.

      Natsu Cross I hold my breath every time I watch it. Other than when she has the occasional episode, she's fine. She didn't get a scratch on her. The limping/uneven gait is residual, temporary neurological deficit from the seizure which resolved within minutes and she went right back to eating as if nothing happened. Not a scratch on her. When she feels them coming on, she runs to what she feels is the safest location. Typically she's in a soft arena and she will run right into the center.

Nearly up the top I feel him losing his footing, I thought he get his feet again... They always do. But no I saw him bash his head on the ground 2 to save himself, then we went over a backwards. I was underneath him for a but, he was dead weight. My Co worker and another rider pulled him me. I walked up the bankment not long after he was conscious again. With a broken eye socket. Thank you I certain he had a seizure, it looked almost identical.. N it did something was weird before that... U kno how u kind become one with the horse your on.. Yes. Poor baby.
    Your voice seemed to help, regardless of what you may hear. My voice was always important to my dog, who would ALWAYS try to get to me when he was having am aura. Gabapentin works (sometimes you have to find a manufacturer whose generics are a little purer. That can be a problem.) Try not to change the manufacturer.
    Good luck to you.

      HARDBAL Thank you! Yes, talking to epileptic animals really help to bring them out. This seizure was actually her worst one and, thankfully, I was there at the right time to video it. I was happy to FINALLY have evidence to show her vet! They've been researching medication options for her, since they confirmed it was an epileptic episode, and conducted a lot of tests to rule out possible causes.

      Thank you for your input. :) She's dewormed on schedule, fed on schedule (even tried a diverse schedule - didn't work). We took away feed/supplements, slowly added, tried new supplements/feed, etc. Blood tests revealed nothing abnormal. Etc. Etc. Etc. We put her on probiotics and so far - no new episode AND her overall attitude is nicer. We're continuing to monitor her closely and hoping the probios help somehow. If that's the case then we'll scope her - good health begins in the gut.

    Our horse has seizures that look a lot like this. He is under the care of Dr. Steve Reed at Rood and Riddle here in Lexington, KY where he had an MRI done. He was found to have an asymmetry in his brain anatomy which they have seen with other cases diagnosed as epilepsy. He is currently on Gabapentin with good results. Just a note that might be of interest, 10cc of IV Banamine and Dexamethasone (not sure dosage) immediately after these helps them pull out of the after affects much more quickly and has seemed to avert any peripheral episodes. The Gabapentin has allowed our horse to lead a very normal life now. He has been on it for about a year and is thriving. (I have one of his seizures posted on my channel for veterinary use...where it's actually been watched far too many times for apparently no reason since, but if you're interested to see the similarities with your horse, I think you'd be surprised.)

    • @ZenithFlame
      @ZenithFlame  4 роки тому

      This horse was around that age. Never had them when she was young and had them very few and far between so it was hard to pinpoint cause/causes, or even what was happening. This one episode in particular was the worst one she had had up to that point in time. She was kept in a large, sandy arena since she'd fall over during the seizures (I had moved her into the spare pens in order to exercise another horse when she had this seizure). After catching it on video, I was able to show the vets, who said she was epileptic. Owner considered medications, availability, dosages, side effects, etc. When she had two seizures in a week, one a bit worse than this one (took longer for her to come out of it), her owner decided to euthanize her.

      It's a fly mask! It keeps a horse's eyes free from flies. The rest of the body can be wiped or sprayed with fly repellent but if any of that gets in eyes it stings. Fly masks are a good thing... She loved wearing hers and would put her face in it whenever it put on. Plus it probably helped protect her eyes from this fall/dirt.

Pinched nerve? etc). Someone then told us seizures - never thought thats what it was until I saw her do this. She started having these episodes after she colicked real bad, maybe it's related? @ZenithFlame  3 роки тому

      I'm sorry your horse has them too. :( Yes, we had stopped riding her and limited who handled her after her first one. We tried changing foods, toxicology reports to see if she was being poisoned by something, etc. It was difficult since we felt it was unsafe to haul her anywhere so the vet always had to come out. We kept things routine, fed at the same time every day, tried keeping her in the same environment - I moved her to an old vacant pen to exercise another horse and she had this episode in the video so we stopped that. I think hers were more dramatic than others because she'd try to escape them. When she experienced a string of episodes the following spring, after going so long without them, we decided to put her down.

      @@predatornz.5493 yes, they came out of nowhere! I was there when this horse was born. She was totally normal, trained, had a normal life until she was mid-teen. She was in the arena to run freely, started acting weird, and then spun around and went down, legs straight up in the air and shaking. She had them sporadically over the next few years, went a year in between episodes most of the time, even over a year. Then spring a couple years ago she had way too many within the span of a week and the owner made the decision to put her down. Weird thing was, she didn't fight the vet. She hated vets and always fought them before that, so we knew that she was ready to go... @@ZenithFlame My horse just had a seizure in turnout this past weekend, and I'm trying to do all the research I can while waiting for the bloodwork results. Just curious, did they ever do any type of brain scan or imaging to rule out a tumor or other brain abnormalities? My boy is only 6, and I'm absolutely terrified of the prognosis and looking for hope that he can continue to be happy, healthy and in work. Sorry to hear about this horses passing.

      She recovered just fine after this episode and others that followed. She was always closely monitored, within view from the house. Her episodes increased dramatically from rarely (once to twice a year which made it difficult to diagnose) to twice a week (which made her extra dangerous). We made the decision to humanely euthanize her. It appeared to me that she could never leave the soft sandy arena where she normally stayed. I had moved her to the unused pen to exercise another horse in the arena and then this episode happened. Not a day goes by that I don't miss her. My family and I owned her mom and raised this horse from birth.
      I think its great that your uncle has horses and other animals. We have horses, dogs, cats, chickens, pigs, sheep, cattle, and one really old, cranky turkey who begs for table scraps. Animals are awesome! I love animals; domestic and wild. It's very important to take care of them the best we can!

      Did the vet say it was mycotoxins/endophytes? How sad... We changed our horse's feed numerous times to rule out toxins. It can be so tricky... It took us a long time to adjust feeds, eliminate possible contaminants, to see if that worked. It seemed to help a little, but then she got worse (seizure frequency increased) so we put her down.

    • @easyequine3827

      ZenithFlame What killed her was something she ate in her paddock, we have been using the same feed on different horses because of how good it is and how much it has helped them for over 3 years now. It is sad when something like this happens, it is hard to believe that ur horse will die until they actually end up passing away. Even though I knew she was dead I for some reason didn’t believe it for a day and a bit.

      @ZenithFlame  5 років тому +1

      We never got a full answer except she might've "just been epileptic". Blood tests revealed nothing, no leads. They also weren't frequent which probably made it more difficult. We changed feed and supplements, eliminated things, etc and she still had them occasionally (maybe once or twice a year). When the episodes increased in frequency we decided to put her down. :( I hope the best for your horse. I'm curious, are your horse's episodes are this bad? I'm also curious what your vet and specialist say about them.

      @@ZenithFlame I havent seen her do them, but shes had 2 days where shes had them, one was a few weeks ago and today she had to spread out episodes. I havent seen them myself... usually someone else is there and tells us (then we rush to the barn and shes fine... but we go to the barn twice a day). I have been there when one happened. I didnt want to see it, knowing there was nothing I could do. My heart dropped hearing her back into the walls and collapse. But it doesnt seem as major as this one, but she does circle around, running into things. Tonight her seizure consisted of her doing the weird thing with her lip and tilting her head. I can barely take this anymore. Shes a rescue (she was neglected) and its been problem after problem. We can manage but I want her to live the rest of her life problem free. Alli Kyunghee Turner --- We never figured out why. She went seizure-free for 6 months and then she had a sudden increase to 8-10 within a couple weeks. The last one she had was worse than the one in the video which was a far cry from her more sedate ones. We made the decision to euthanize her. We would've liked to have figured it out 100% but we didn't want to risk her hurting herself if she had an episode harder than her last one. She didn't hurt herself with the last one, she got up and walked away just fine, but we could tell her seizures were getting worse. The 'cluster' of seizures told us it was time.

    • @ZenithFlame
      @ZenithFlame  5 років тому +2

      If you read the comments... She was euthanized over a year ago. Cruelty would be killing her without trying to get a diagnosis. If your dog has bloody sneezing fits, you take it to the vet to try and HELP the dog. You don't just walk in and have the vet euthanize the dog because it sneezes so hard, blood gets everywhere in your house. If you do, you shouldn't own animals!!! If you love animals - YOU TRY to help them, figure out what's wrong and treat it. We tried, because we loved her, still do. We owed her that much and we do what we can for ALL our animals. As I hope everyone would. Her episodes were very infrequent. Due to the infrequent nature, it was difficult to diagnose. When her frequent episodes became more frequent, the decision was made to euthanize since they jumped to 8 episodes over 2 weeks and also became more violent than this one in the video. This video was the longest, most violent she had had out of all of them up until the clusters at the end.
      Every animal deserves a chance when going through something difficult. Be kind.
