"Dogs can't swallow their tongue... neither do people" Thank you for saying that Dr. Jeff! To this day, so many people think you should try to grab someones tongue when they're having a seizure! STOP PEOPLE!! You'll end up hurting yourself and the person!
@@tobe3940Where did you hear that? Never in my 40 year's in the medical field have we ever had or heard of anyone biting their tongue off. That is a myth. Don't ever put anything in a person mouth that is having a seizure. Roll them to their side to help with their airway make sure to keep area clear so they can't be injured don't hold them down you can put something soft under the head and keep time of the beginning and end of seizure.
Fortunately I've never had to experience this, but this is great to be armed with this knowledge. Thank you Dr. Jeff.....I came here from your final video on your holistic veterinary conference that started April 8th, 2024. VERY informative!
My dog had been having a mild seizure for upwards of ten minutes and I had no idea how to console her, so I looked up this video. As soon as I put a blanket over her the seizure subsided. Thank you so much!
my 18 year old 20 lbs mutt had his 1st seizure last night. I was terrified. I held him in my arms the whole time not knowing what to do. I honestly thought he was dying in my arms. Now 16 hours later he's acting like nothing happened. He's my little fighter. I love him so much.
I have a small 1 year old dog, and she had one out of no where while she was playing. I thought she'd hurt herself and gone into shock....it was scary Back to normal a few minutes later!
I walk a dog that has cancer and he has already surpassed his odds and has been doing really really good despite his prognosis. He hasn’t had one in a while but I want to make sure I’m prepared if he does have one while I’m watching him so he can be as safe as possible. Thanks for the info ! I hope I never need it !
I hope you're continuing with this dream dear one. The world needs not only veterinary doctors, but HOLISTIC ones - they are very rare and very needed. Blessings on following your dream and helping animals and their guardians.
I wrote down the important information in this video so that I (and other people) could have a concise list of things to do if this ever happens to your dog : 1) Make sure you don't put your hand in their mouth and don't let their mouth be anywhere near your hands, face, or you in general. This also means if you grab or move them, you don't do it by grabbing near the mouth and you don't do it with the mouth facing you. 2) If they are near a wall, stairs or furniture, get them away from there and make sure they have plenty of room not to hit anything. Do this by grabbing them by the hind legs or tail. 3) Make sure they are in a "sternum position" (belly down, not on their back). 4) Quiet the environment (turn off TV, music and lights if possible). 5) Put a blanket on their whole body (the weight helps to calm them and it also prevents stimuli). 6) If you have it, put an ice pack (or frozen bag of peas, or whatever does the job) on top of them, directly on their spine at the very end of the back near the tail. Cover them back up with the blanket and don't touch them anymore. 7) If they vomit, grab them by the lower belly and pull them up slightly so that the head is at an angle and the vomit can freely fall off so they don't choke on it. Don't go in their mouth to try and scoop it out and such. 8) If the dog is only having 1-2 seizure in a row, the previous steps should be enough (but once the seizure are over, you should probably plan a visit at the vet the make sure everything is fine). If the dog is having 3-4 or more seizure in a row, you should probably rush him to the vet so they can stop the seizures and help you.
Thank you for the informational video. My dog had 2 seizures 7 days ago and has been on medication since that time and has been seizure free. I am looking forward to the future for references and I found your video helpful for the most part. My GSD had her first seizure while sleeping upside down with her legs in the air. She is 80 pound and has done this for years... I freaked out and thought she was dying when it happened. Luckily my son came when I started screaming at 5am. He placed her on her side and just held her tightly until she calmed down and came out of it. He then carried all 80 pounds of her outside and loaded her in the truck and we immediately went to the vet. Long story short... because it was a long story... we experienced a second seizure... this one on her side and it didn't last as long. Honestly the medication has helped but it has also come with some serious side effects... which are difficult for a 80 pound GSD and a human loved one. Watch my daily videos if you are interested. If I had CBD oil or alternatives I would consider them but at this point we are past the worst with the meds and we are just waiting and hoping the next one isn't so bad. Day 7 complete for us. Seizures are so scary! PS... My vet recommended an ice pack on her head because that is where the neurons are causing the seizure. I know this vet was all about safety to human, but if you can during safely or afterwards. Anyway... thanks for the post and to anyone reading my long story... #dogslife
My 12 year old CavaChon has been having seizures that last about 15 seconds and are usually at night. He had one today and was I desperate for information since it is Saturday night and my vet's office is closed. Was about to take to emergency vet until I watched your video. Will touch base with my vet on Monday. Now I feel better and he is resting now. Your video was educational and well instructed. Thank you!
we live in Colorado and we have two service dogs. our six year old boxer has always gotten them, he just had one 5minutes ago and we give him CBD WITH 1%THC just one drop and as soon as it hits his toung it stops. he started coming to us right before hes about to have one and opens his mouth and he starts shaking we get it right away... its so painful to watch but im sure it more painful for him.. it brakes my heart everytime!!
Everything But The kitchen Sink REDDOORINK I live in Colorado too and have considered CBD oil for my boy. Does it work? Do you use any prophylactically?
@@MaMaTArtlife next time just take him to the nearest vet. If he needs to be sent to another location they should tell you there. You just need it to stop, in my opinion, as long as it's stopped and the animal is okay, that's all that matters. Hope your dog's doing good!
Very Helpful. Thank You for the info. My 4 yo Shih Tzu had a small seizure tonight. She's had this happen once before in exactly the same setting. She'll be fast asleep when I come home and when she wakes up all excited to greet me she seizes. She's never fully flopped over or lost full mobility like I've seen in other dogs, but she does paddle her paws, shakes, and looks, dazed, then is a bit wobbly after she comes to. I'm taking her the Vet first thing in the morning. I've seen much worse seizures in dogs who much older, but I've never had a dog so young have a seizure.
But you have to protect yourself in order to save your dog. That's why on planes they say for parents to put their oxygen masks on themselves first and then put one on your child.
Argh.. i'm 13 and was in room with my dog and it's so hot and she just had a seizure... OMG SO SCARY, now watching this to know what to do next time... thank you so much
I'm 14 my dog had a seizure this morning and shes been sleeping all day but she wakes up time to time and kicked opens eyes lifts heads, etc and I came here just in case
I have a 60kg gsd that has seizures and there's no way could I move him! Great tip about him sleeping on his stomach didn't think being on his side could be a factor tonight's the first he's had 2 in the same night. I use the ice pack and it works a treat not had a seizure last longer than about 2 mins! thanks for the great video.
My dog has seizures. She usually has 1 every month. Now she is getting them like every 7-15 days.. I want to try cbd oil. .Where to buy best quality cbd for her?
My dog has maybe one a year, and only one. But I can see I've done a number of things wrong. I left the TV playing instead of quieting the area. I turned on the lights instead of darkening his world. and I put my head on his neck and arm around him trying to comfort him. Now in the past 5 years he's had like 1 a year, and he's never bitten or even lashed out at me, but I can see where thing could get worse. My moose is a pit/boxer mix, and like 105lbs, so he really could hurt me not meaning to. Thanks for the video. I learned something.
Thank you so much, my 1 year old husky has had 2 seizures in 12 hours and I'm sleeping with him tonight and I thank you so much for the info becuase I really didnt know what to do to help him🥺😔 and I pray he doesnt have one tonight
My dog has had 4 seizures and after watching this video I am still scared bc it breaks my heart to see her like this. I will be calling g the vet in the morning
Thank you Dr Grognet. I am a groomer and have encountered many situations but not with my animals at home. This is very helpful to know and review for my future geriatric pup😢😯🤓
Can you be strong for your dog's sake? It is so much scarier for her. Talk calmly and reassuringly to her. and maybe even lay your hands on her back end and let her know you are there and that she will be ok. Yes, it is scary, but you will help her by being calm and reassuring her.
Thank you for this information. I appreciate knowing how I might help my Cavalier who has started having seizures. It’s so frightening and this information helps
side note: oddly enough the mother of the dog that had the seizure began to bundle her up in a blanket the sat right up against her (not on top) but just enough to cover her ears and eyes. She had blankets shoved all around her from my bed. I love animals and I believe the mother knew even better than I as to what to do. Then I watched this and realized she did everything you said and all I had to do was turn down the lights and computer and she was fine. God bless you for this information.
Massage your pet while they have the seizure. It will “cut down the length” of the seizure. Also it is calming for the dog. Massage around their neck, shoulders the most and down their back. It’s worked the most for my family. We have had two dogs now over the years with seizures.
I did this. Once the seizure stopped though. He was in a period of panting and disoriented for a while afterwards so I touched his back and spoke to him. He would look at me whenever I spoke even though he was still disoriented.
Last year my 2 year old cocker spaniel Prince started having seizures. We took him to he vet and they said he only needed the medication if he has them every month. He didn’t. I pray to god everyday that he will stop his siezures and not die because I love his so very much
My dog just had his first seizure. At first I thought his legs weren’t working and he was just flipping around to try and get up. He’s a little old shih tzu and I love him so so much 😢 (Edit) he seems to be okay now ❤️❤️❤️
My chihuahua just had her first tonight went to er vet he gave her valium. Brought her home now shes sleeping gota take her back. Scared the hell out of me to see he like that.
hey mine had it last Thursday we took him to the vet and the vet said he was fine but he still acts a little sad but he chases cat barks at people and gets mad when we get his toy which that's normal but I don't know has your dog changed in anyway or she still the same
Omg, this why I'm on here. Last night my 15 yr old son, rushed in my room..and said mommy I think something is wrong with CoCo. I rushed into he's room...and saw that my CoCo was having a seizure. I tooked him out of kennel, and wrapped him in a towel. I was so scared, that he going to die. He is only 4 pounds. Well thank goodness everything was okay.
We find that over stimulation (upsets), temp changes (hot) and sound cause seizures in elderly dogs. Never knew about cold pack....will add that to my arsenal. Thanks!
Thank you so much Dr. Jeff for this video on managing dogs experiencing seizures. This video really helped me a lot in taking of my favorite dog Chuchay.. I've spent sleepless nights since she had her seizure last August 11. She is only 6 months old.. I think she was exposed to a poison or insecticide somewhere dumped by the neighborhood. With your video I was able to managed how to control the attacked. I will be taking her to the vet tomorrow since she experiences 3 to 4 seizures a day.. Thank you so much.. This really is a big big help.. God bless you doc Jeff!!!
My German Shepherd had her 1st seizure a little bit ago, scared me to death. She is 6yrs old. I watched a video of a dog having a seizure and it was the same thing as my Pepper and the advice from the vet video, I think I did pretty good with her, but know more now. If she has another we are going to the Vet.
Thanks for posting this video it was very helpful for me to validate mostly what I already knew. My little dog has had a few seizures the last couple of years.
We brought a rescue dog home today and I think it was a lot for her and she had a seizure. We've never had a dog have a seizure before but it was over pretty quickly. It's nice to know what to do now.
thank you. my pup just had one earlier and i was so scared and didn't know what to do. we're going to see a vet sometime this week to see what we can do. thankfully, this video gave me some great tips and i'll be sure to buy some ice packs and a good blanket for next time.
My dog has epilepsy. She gets very scared when having a seizure (understandably), and needs comfort like being held, and kept cool. ( I use a small fan, and use a wet cold rag to wet her ears and belly. ) if I left her in the floor like this she’d hurt herself to find me and would be in a lot more stress. I know my dog and her seizures, and I honestly wouldn’t care to be bit while comforting her. She jerks and convulses, but never bites. I think you’d have to know how your dog to know what works for them.
Thank you so much!!! My dog has been having seizures spread out for a long time now because he id a mix of his genetics. It is not a strange thing for him to have one if he eats too much salt. And yes we try our best too keep it away from him but he always finds a way. For a long time we have just been comforting him and letting it pass. Now that I know what to do I can be prepared for next time.
Thank you so much for posting this. I don't know if my dog is having seizures or not. She has Cushing's and last night started shaking her head for 5-10 seconds. She later did it again for 20 seconds and then repeated it for 20 seconds today. It's just her head shaking rhythmically, not the whole body. My vet is out for a couple days. Don't know what to think but I'm glad to have the advice in this video.
Good info, thanks. Our 2 year old bagle (bassett beagle mix) has them about once every 7 to 9 days. I'll try the ice pack on him next time to see if that eases them away a bit quicker.
My beagle has them maybe once or twice a month. The vet said they had no idea what it could be as her vitals and bloodwork were normal. They figured epilepsy but said medication may or may not help since they weren't certain. She didn't start having seizures until she was a couple of years old. From her only litter, we were told one of the puppies had seizures pretty early on though and is now on meds. Dr said that is probably the best indication its epilepsy in her since it was passed down.
my dog will run to me right before she has a seizure and during the seizure she will pee and puke, and with the extreme seizures she will poop as well it usually helps her calm down to have her head on my shoulder
thank you! my 14 year old just started with seizures. I know better because I have worked with a vet before. I never touch him, I just make sure he is on the floor and unable to hurt himself. I also keep a journal on how often. It's about 7 to 10 days.
Once that happens to my dog for the first time i don’t know what was the problem or what to do I was going crazy I was shaking my dog then her eyes went blank we did CPR on her and she got kinda better then we let her relax but she was shaking hard Am so thankful for my Mom and Aunt they helped me or I wouldn’t have know what to do!!!!!!
I LITERALLY love u this could help so many people and my dog is only 3 years old and he’s very healthy but u never know so that’s y I always do my research on what to do just in case I don’t know why but I still do
My 13 year old Maltese just got done with her second seizure and her life about 10 minutes ago. I'm glad I look this up. I took her to the vet immediately after the first time, but they didn't know exactly what it was because it could have been three things. I don't have the money really right now to get her a cat-scan and x-rays as he suggested. I'm going to save up as much as I can and get everything she needs, my dog though doesn't go flat on your stomach during a seizure, she falls on her side and bends backwards to where her head almost touches her tail and screams. It all starts with a cough, then she acts like she can't breathe and then collapses and has a seizure. It happens when she's way too excited after I come home. It hurts so much to see her suffer
Madison Hammons thank you. How is your pup? I had taken Zoey to the vet who prescribed me phenobarbital however I was trying the cbd oil route which worked some but last night’s seizure was so scary I will just start her on the meds.
My silver lab got ahold of beer a year or two ago and as he walked into my room he was walking crooked and failed to jump on my bed. He eventually got onto my bed and just fell over and started seizing. I yelled for my step mum and we tried to calm him down and after a few minutes it finally stopped. It was terrifying and gladly he hasn't had one since but now i know the warnings beforehand.
Best thing you can do is leave it alone... and let it happen And wait till the dog stops Once my dog had a seizure But the funny thing was He acted like nothing happened after the seizure
its not just for people, kids grown ups but our service dogs as well!! Those are our kids!! I take just the CBDS no THC it doesn't get rid of the pain but it helps... and I was injured in iraq.. im so thankful for this!!
this actually is very important. I never knew that... (I would coddle my pup before he passed, never was bitten. but there way a huge chance I couldve been) but me not knowing. thats all I knew. hold him, pet him. and talk to him... (the vet thinks he was abused before we had him, we got to deal with the aftermath) poor Rexaroni
I have a chihuahua that has had seizures since she was three months she is 9 years old now she use to be on phenobarbital till this Nov when we moved out of the state we heard we could taper her off of the pheno with peanut butter and honey it worked her seizures have lessened and now when she has one we put her in a cooler place and she seems to come out of it within mins it use to be multiple seizures and sometimes last hours. not sure why it is working but it does. Also read that taking her off the pheno would help with her kidney issues she use to urinate all the time even after coming in from outside she would go again. Now tonight my Maltese who never has had a seizure seems to be having tremors she is 3 and has always been active and healthy my husband threw some old bread out to feed the birds it was an everything Italian loaf could that have caused her to have a stomach ache or any damage he did pick it up but she may have eaten a slice it has seeds on the edge like a everything bagel I am very sorry about this being so long but we just moved here and have not established a new vet we are both still looking for jobs. she just seems off tonite and I am really worried.
+Tina Thornton Tina. I am so sorry you are having this trouble with your little friend. This is a complex case and there are many things that need to be discussed. Unfortunately, I can only offer one suggestion - see a veterinarian who can advise you on this. All the best, Dr.Jeff
My dog, a 8 year old mutt just had one, it's the second time Ive witnessed and it wasn't any less frighting than the last time it happened months ago. He didn't snap or growl, he just shakes a lot and foams a little, eyes down turned. Didn't last more than about 3 or 4 minutes, with the disorientation period accounted for, thankfully. Like last time there wasn't much more I could do than petting him and try to sooth him through it, so when it was done I googled for more information, to see if there was anything else I could and came across this video. Thank you very much for the information, if it happens next time, I'll be a little better prepared.
My Akbash is 160 pounds- no way I could move her, as I discovered when she had her first seizure (?) last night. She didn’t seize like I would have thought she would, her entire body went completely stiff for about five minutes, she fell over backwards and just laid there drooling and peeing. No flopping or jerking. I thought for sure she had just had a stroke or a heart attack! Took her to the vet today and she looks great, we did some blood work and we’ll go from there.
I Have to disagree with one of the points made only because it can be dangerous for your dog. Do NOT put a blanket on your dog! The reason I say this is because during a seizure your dogs temperature is elevated and you do not want to raise it more. In fact you should do things to help keep their body temperature from rising. It was suggested by my vet to have a fan blowing on her. In addition to the ice pack on the spine, I also put one on the top of her head.
I agree. A dog can get overheated if it has continuous seizures. Instead of putting a blanket on the dog in that case, you should be on your way to the hospital.
The oldest chihuahua started having seizures a couple months ago. I honestly thought that he was injured at first. His first one he started out falling over then he would stiffen and start screaming like he was being killed. His seizures seem to be triggered when he gets overly excited. (I'm suspicious that a flea med given 1 time last year, started them, but there's no proof. Just suspicions.) To be honest all of us have picked him up every time he has had a seizure and once he's against us his screaming stops shortly and he snaps out of it quickly. He has started to walk to us to lay down near us now right before he has one. I wouldn't pick him up if he was exhibiting any teeth grinding or some of the other behaviors during seizures I've seen some dogs do on UA-cam btw! Ace Academy definitely has the protect yourself thing spot on!!!!!! The dogs have absolutely NO idea what's going on for a while! I just wanted to share this. Our poor little guy has one or two every month now. They never last more then a few minutes but his recovery time varies. After he suddenly relaxes when the seizure is done, it can take up to 10 min to have him fully aware and back to normal.
I wish I could watch this video before , today morning at around 3:30 am I lost my pup because of seizures, two days ago I went to veterian but Doctors was not able to identify the disease , he said temperature is low so I have to keep my pup warm and should massage her when she shiveers and foaming. I did a very big mistake by making my pup warm , I love her very much and miss her very badly, she was a very cute pup used to play with me always.
Wished I'd seen this video before my dogs first (and so far only) seizure :'D Bit both my thumbs almost to the bone and one of my fingernails right in half. Now I know to stay away from the mouth, thanks for the tips, I hope I'll never need them!
I started CBD oil for my dog as well. so far so good was having a seizure every 2 weeks. so time will tell if it is working but I have read and heard good things. *Update* has been over 2 months with no seizures! i give it twice a day and a 1 ounce bottle has lasted me 73 days. the dog weighs 55 pounds.
@@danab4337 If you live in Canada, try CannaCanine, it's high quality CBD oil for dogs that even humans can take. If not, try Charlotte's Web CBD, it's also high quality oil and they sell for both human and pets. Just make sure you talk to your vet about it before giving your dog CBD as it can interact with certain medications. Whatever oil you decide to go with, just do you own research on it. The last thing you want to do is spend your money on a cheap product that won't work as it should. And don't forget to make sure the oil has no THC in it because it's toxic to dogs!
My rescue Yorkshire terrier had a mild seizure last weekend. It was whilst we were on a walk. I had no idea what was happening. He just ran up to me, stopped and lifted a paw up and pointed it to the sky. I thought he had something in the pad, like a stone. Then he lifted the other paw the same way and fell over. I tried to pick him up and he started to spin. I eventually managed to pick him up, (his mouth was very close to my face), he was trembling and his gaze was fixed and staring, he wasn't responsive. I thought he was having a heart attack and I was holding my dog as he died. I headed home, still cuddling him. He came out of it before I got home and he turned and licked my face. The whole episode last well under 5 minutes. He seemed fine afterwards, and ate his dinner as if nothing had happened. As it was late on a Sunday, I decided to wait until the following day to take him to our Vet. He checked him over and he was perfectly fine. The only thing I noticed that was different, was that during his walk on the morning following the seizure, he stayed very close to me and didnt run off and explore with the other dogs like he usually does. By the afternoon he was back to running around and exploring. I just need to be mindful that he has had one and might have another one again. Despite thinking he was dying, I was quite calm, which was amazing really. BTW, he is approx 8 yo and didn't vomit, foam, pee or poo at the time.
My dog had a seizure while having puppies and I feel bad for everybody and all dogs that have seizures it’s horrible especially because I’m really attached to my dog I really love her
Nate Keller this is not the case. They can live a full life, some have to be on anticonvulsants for the rest of their life due to it being epilepsy. The other unfortunately is neurological like a brain tumour which is obvious because the general health of the dog deteriorates over times like cancer. If that makes any sense to you

I have a Dotson and he has seizures around every month. I searched it and it said it was normal for his breed. I just am trying to figure out how to hold and care for him while he has them
my lab just had her second seizure and I'm wondering how this would work for her as she becomes very disoriented for 3-5 minutes after the seizure. They also both happened while she was asleep. How would we safely bring her out of a seizure in that case?
In this case, you would follow the guidelines in the webinar. Just make sure that you are safe and she doesn't hurt herself. Take care, Jeff www.dogtraining.academy
We have a very quiet Chihuahua. I mean he never barks unless it's at the squirrels.lol. He has had seizures that he just locks up. His legs will straighten, he goes off into a state with tears. He will sometimes urinate or poop. He never shakes like a human might have one. He can't even open his mouth when he's having one. He's never had 2 in a row in the 5 years he's had them. He has one maybe once a month or every 3 months. Our Vet can't tell us what's causing them. He has had bladder stones removed 2x. The last time was about 3 years ago and they were causing severe blockage. He's had seizures before then and after the stones. There's nothing common about them to make a medical decision as to what's causing them. He's an apple head and weighs 6lbs. As I said he doesn't do anything more than lock up, cry, drool and urinate/poop. One thing we found that helps him is holding him. We've even hung him, kind of like traction the 2nd one and it immediately stopped his seizure. We had found that he had a almost completely fused from neck to tail spine. He is a rescue. We had him about 2yrs before his first seizure with us. It was about 9mths later when he had another one. Then it was 6, 4 or 3 months and as he's gotten older it can be 1x a month or every 2 or 3. The holding him close really helps him. He's not your typical Chihuahua. Does anyone have these types of seizures with Apple head Chihuahuas and what have you found that causes them or helps your baby. This last one lasted the longest about 6 min from locking up to releasing enough to move his legs. He had never droolled this much or per and pooped at the same time. He is my little man that we love so so so very much. He is the best Chihuahua.
Hockey Mom 67 My Little Chihuahua was like yours, he didn't bark he was very quiet and he had never had a seizure in the 12 years I had him. He suddenly started getting small nose bleeds about 2 months ago. The vet started giving him antibiotics thinking it was an upper respiratory thing going on. The antibiotics stopped his nose bleeds and he would start to feel better. And then a few days after he stopped medication he would start having his nose bleed again, always out of the same side. And then one night he had a grand mal seizure. And started having them repeatedly one after the other, I took him to the all night vet and they kept him and put him on phenobarbital. The next day they said he was terminal, and there was nothing I could do for him. I had to make the hardest decision ever had to make concerning one of my pets. Because he was my best friend. Within a matter of 2 months, he went from being happy loving running around the house little dog, to having to be put to sleep in a matter of one day after he started seizures. I know this is not what you want to hear. But I had to share my story. And I hope the best and godspeed for your little dog. And your family
My little (smiley) Miley 6lb chihuahua is on her 2nd & 3rd seizure in 2 days. Her 1st one was Mar 22,18 and I believe she may have had one other while we were out a couple months ago... cuz she was very lethargic when I came into house. She is my baby girl I'm thinking desperately to get her some relief, figure out what I can do or racking my brain to find the cause.. They mostly have come when she got excited... I'm not sure what a vet will say.. I took her a few days after the 1st seizure...but nothing came of it.. just a bill... I'd like to try any nature remedies like cbd, honey, essential oils for calming, etc. Any advice would be appreciated. Im simply not ready for bad news or her getting any worse... prayers my baby makes a recovery and has her health back, in Jesus name. Amen
My 5 year old Tibetan Spaniel has been having seizures for 5 years and they recently started to become more frequent . I had heard of successful treatment of humans with epilepsy controlling their frequency by changing to the Ketogenic way of eating . which is low carb ,medium Protein and high fat , We have taken all grain based food out of her diet and put her on a raw food diet .she has not had a seizure now for over a month .we have even cut back on her medication . she was on one Pexion tablet a day, the Vet recommended they we start giving her two a day .we have cut back to one tablet every two days and all is well. we will look at cutting back even more .
Moving to raw is a great way to provide great nutrition. I am not sure how ketogenic i is, but it can certainly eliminate allergies which can also trigger seizures.
* question @ the end* thank you, I appreciate the tips you shared and thank you for demonstrating. after watching I found a couple things I've done wrong and I've learned a few things that I'll use next time. (hopefully I won't ever have to use them). I do have a question. with the ice pack on the back - you said the sternum position......my dog is 117 pounds, strong and stronger during seizures and he never is in any other position than on his side during one. I don't believe I could get him into (and keep him) this position. could I still try to hold an ice pack to his spine?
My 7 year old pitbull/mastiff has seizures and is on medication for them. I had a friend who had seizures in school so I knew the basics- dont hold them down, time it, if they vomit move them over so they cant choke, all that stuff. My boy has fallen off the couch (it's a very low couch) and his head was under the coffee table so I just moved the table over so he couldn't hit his head. Its terrifying to watch but as soon as he comes out of it he acts like nothing happened, just goes to get a drink and lays back down
All of a sudden my three year old German Shepard mix had a seizure last week. We took him to vet immediately. They checked him and said didn't know why- no temp, no masses. While we were at vet he seemed to become his old self. Two days ago he had four seizures- bad ones. He has also been pooping in the house at night. The vet said just write down the seizures. I am so scared for him and do not want to lose him. My mom is convinced he has a brain tumor. Has anyone experienced this? He never had a seizure before.
What would you recommend Dr. Grognet with an episode of paroxysmal dyskinesia that last more than an hour. I give rectal valium which helps immensely but what is a preventative measure. Anticonvulsatory medication are not effective.
I have never seen this disease and it is a separate entity from epilepsy. Here's a site on it: www.vetsonline.com/publications/veterinary-times/archives/n-42-16/paroxysmal-movement-disorders-in-dogs.html The important thing with that disease is preventing the triggers (certain or excess muscle movements). I do not know if the methods in the video would help when it is ongoing. I assume you have a dog with this. Have you tried them out?
It's very hard to watch. We just cry. Our dog has cancer, but has only had 2 grand meals. We got phenobarbital but our dog is still so active and playful that we don't want to gork her.
My babygirl had a seizure 40 min ago, she was shacking and couldn’t breath, she was choking as well, then she would be fine for like 5 min and then get it again and again, she is now rushed to the emergency vet with my mum, I have to stay with our baby boy, please pray for her, I’ll don’t know what I’ll do if I don’t have her.
Pulling a dog by the leg can cause injury. You need to ratify when that's safe and not safe i. e. dog size etc. Otherwise it all feels a bit like rodeo indifference. Throwing a blanket over can cause over-heating too. It can also escalate fear of the dog fears darkness. Mine certainly processes to an extent during a seizure, even though very starey and spacey.
my dog was on my bed and he started to shake and i was holding him then i noticed he started drooling and i was getting a tissue to wipe him then he started banging himself on my pillow so i got him and put him in the floor then the threw up some food that he got into then pooped. this happened 5 minutes ago and i didn’t know what to do until right now, so thanks for that.
"Dogs can't swallow their tongue... neither do people" Thank you for saying that Dr. Jeff! To this day, so many people think you should try to grab someones tongue when they're having a seizure! STOP PEOPLE!! You'll end up hurting yourself and the person!
Aren't you supposed to make it so they don't bite their tongue
You do realize that there has been cases where people bit their tongues off during a seizure before, right?
VERY informative!
omg thanks for this, my dog just had a siezure a few minutes ago
What happened to him?!
Same. That is why I looked this up
Where your dogs alright
Same
Mine just had one too
My dog had been having a mild seizure for upwards of ten minutes and I had no idea how to console her, so I looked up this video. As soon as I put a blanket over her the seizure subsided. Thank you so much!
You are very welcome! Glad it helped.
my 18 year old 20 lbs mutt had his 1st seizure last night.
I thought she'd hurt herself and gone into shock....it was scary
Back to normal a few minutes later!
same with me and my Border collie--- hard to see them suffer
Tipsie Trixie why nt bring to vet?
Tipsie Trixie Well your dog is dead now
1 seizure can be fatal
I just faced the same situation,
I walk a dog that has cancer and he has already surpassed his odds and has been doing really really good despite his prognosis. He hasn’t had one in a while but I want to make sure I’m prepared if he does have one while I’m watching him so he can be as safe as possible. Thanks for the info ! I hope I never need it !
I’m 13 and I want to be a vet for dogs and other animals so I look at videos like this to follow my dream
Good luck, I hope you can fulfill your dream. Keep following them
I hope you're continuing with this dream dear one. The world needs not only veterinary doctors, but HOLISTIC ones - they are very rare and very needed. Blessings on following your dream and helping animals and their guardians.
I wrote down the important information in this video so that I (and other people) could have a concise list of things to do if this ever happens to your dog :
1) Make sure you don't put your hand in their mouth and don't let their mouth be anywhere near your hands, face, or you in general.
Thank you for writing this out. 🌻
#dogslife
My dog just had a seizure I thought she was going to die right in front of me
Same. I literally thought it was the end
Reddoorink I live in Colorado, my dog just had a seizure. Where is the beat place to take her.
@@MaMaTArtlife next time just take him to the nearest vet. If he needs to be sent to another location they should tell you there. You just need it to stop, in my opinion, as long as it's stopped and the animal is okay, that's all that matters. Hope your dog's doing good!
Well done, Dr. Jeff! Thank you for sharing your expertise!!
AHHH I DOONNTT CAREEE ABOUTT MYYYSELF I CARREE ABBOUUTT MYY DOOG
Melon Wolfey I care about my dog too. Pets matter more.
But you have to protect yourself in order to save your dog. That's why on planes they say for parents to put their oxygen masks on themselves first and then put one on your child.
well to take care of your dog you need to take careof yourself first
Can't take very good care of your dog if your'e injured though

Argh.. i'm 13 and was in room with my dog and it's so hot and she just had a seizure...
OMG SO SCARY, now watching this to know what to do next time...
thank you so much
Alosian Vivancos she's fine now, she's just getting old it sucks and i know i can't do anything about it :(
Emily Ovens what type of dog is it ?
Catniss EverMeow There is not a direct link between heat and seizures. If this was the case then dogs in hot countries would be seizuring from day 1.
Catniss EverMeow I have seizures too. I’m not joking.
My is having them rite now his been having them for 2years already...I really need help with hem
More likely what you are doing wrong is THE VAXXING...
I didn't knew about the ice pack. Thank you.
Thank you so much. I had a cocker that died from a seizure. I got her to the Vet but she still died. It was so scary and I felt so helpless.
Why whenever my dog has a seizure she is in my room...my heart cant handle much more....she just had her 3rd one like 5 minutes ago
it's very hard to go through. I've been through it a few times with my dog and it's always painful.
Can you be strong for your dog's sake? It is so much scarier for her. Talk calmly and reassuringly to her. and maybe even lay your hands on her back end and let her know you are there and that she will be ok. Yes, it is scary, but you will help her by being calm and reassuring her.
Thank you for your video. In my time of need you were there to inform me. Best of wishes , God Bless you and your Family.
Thank you
He didn’t. I pray to god everyday that he will stop his siezures and not die because I love his so very much
I have an epileptic furbaby....wish I had seen this 8 months ago, when we were 1st diagnosed! 🐕❤🐶
My dog just had his first seizure. At first I thought his legs weren’t working and he was just flipping around to try and get up. He’s a little old shih tzu and I love him so so much 😢
(Edit) he seems to be okay now ❤️❤️❤️
My chihuahua just had her first tonight went to er vet he gave her valium. Brought her home now shes sleeping gota take her back. Scared the hell out of me to see he like that.
hey mine had it last Thursday we took him to the vet and the vet said he was fine but he still acts a little sad but he chases cat barks at people and gets mad when we get his toy which that's normal but I don't know has your dog changed in anyway or she still the same
CBD OIL for dogs, search herbstrong on Google way better then the chemicals you will get from anything else

Thank you. I'm going to look for that oil. 💕
Do you think... It's all of chihuahuas, who gets seizures?
Remembering this good lesson.
My dog had a seizure 10/27/23
It was scary because it was the 1st time ever for him.
My 7 year old Dudley Lab has been having seizures quite a bit, so thank you for this information.
Mr. East Sea Shoulders give him 1/4 of a phenobarbital it has helped mine a lot
+momofmadeleine It may be nothing or a very mild seizure. If it continues, get her checked for sure. Good luck with your friend.
Dr. Jeff
Thank you Dr. Jeff.....as always....great information to know.
my dog will run to me right before she has a seizure and during the seizure she will pee and puke, and with the extreme seizures she will poop as well it usually helps her calm down to have her head on my shoulder
thank you! my 14 year old just started with seizures. I know better because I have worked with a vet before. I never touch him, I just make sure he is on the floor and unable to hurt himself. I also keep a journal on how often. It's about 7 to 10 days.
My little chiwawa had several seizures today and i honestly feel her time is coming
She needs to be on anti-convulsant meds to stop it from happenin again.
My mom just informed me that my dog had another episode, second time and my heart is broken. 😭
Angels among us
I LITERALLY love u this could help so many people and my dog is only 3 years old and he’s very healthy but u never know so that’s y I always do my research on what to do just in case I don’t know why but I still do
My 13 year old Maltese just got done with her second seizure and her life about 10 minutes ago.
Madison Hammons my dog too, she’s a nine year old Boston the one tonight was so scary and lasted longer than the other four she’s had..
@@MissHinds09 I'm so sorry to hear :c I hope everything will end up okay
Where did you get that cow? I want it ^_^
Walmart!
Yeah that is so cute
Best thing you can do is leave it alone...
and let it happen
And wait till the dog stops
Once my dog had a seizure
But the funny thing was
He acted like nothing happened after the seizure
its not just for people, kids grown ups but our service dogs as well!!
Mommy Life Could abuse be a reason why a dog starts having seizures a couple of years after?
I hugged my dog to death when he had one I didn't know he was having one I didn't really care I thought he was gonna die
That is nice to know. I hope he doesn't have another.
Thankyou due to this i saved my dog
Thank you for this. Will definitely try it!!!
Great presentation,...thank you.
Wished I'd seen this video before my dogs first (and so far only) seizure :'D Bit both my thumbs almost to the bone and one of my fingernails right in half. Now I know to stay away from the mouth, thanks for the tips, I hope I'll never need them!

If a dog has seizures, is that an indication they will have a shorter lifespan or is it like people, and they can live as long as other dogs?
As long as they are healthy and aren't on medication that damages the liver, they can have a normal life.

This just happened to my dog. Scared the shit out me! Thanks!
This looks worth trying- Thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thank you so much for your advice.
Take care, Jeff

most seizures happen during sleep...I suggest joining an online canine epilepsy group..it saved my furbaby's life and helping my anxiety!
MaddiesJourney there common in labs and black labs they'll happen there hole life
Chronic dragonz wrong. ive had labs my whole life, none of them ever had any. this is the first one that has had anything medically wrong
ouscrawburry are there any groups you specifically recommend? My pup has had a few seizures that were mild but my anxiety is through the roof.
Amen

Thank you for such a good informative video. Bless you.
Thank you so much!!! This really helps!
Its rare for my dog to get an attack but it once happened and we didnt understand what was happening and it was so scary ;-; But he is okay now
My dog never bit me when he gets his seizures
Awww that cow is so cuteee
* question @ the end* thank you, I appreciate the tips you shared and thank you for demonstrating. after watching I found a couple things I've done wrong and I've learned a few things that I'll use next time. (hopefully I won't ever have to use them). I do have a question. with the ice pack on the back - you said the sternum position......my dog is 117 pounds, strong and stronger during seizures and he never is in any other position than on his side during one. I don't believe I could get him into (and keep him) this position. could I still try to hold an ice pack to his spine?
Thank you so much doctor
He never had a seizure before.
it's idiopathic which means nobody knows what's causing the seizure
Oc Madness's dat boi's wife and girlfriend so what happened?
Amy Hagan-Martin vets told me the same thing, they don't know what's wrong with my dog.
Here's a site on it:
www.vetsonline.com/publications/veterinary-times/archives/n-42-16/paroxysmal-movement-disorders-in-dogs.html
The important thing with that disease is preventing the triggers (certain or excess muscle movements). I do not know if the methods in the video would help when it is ongoing. I assume you have a dog with this. Have you tried them out?
Thanks Dr. Jeff!
My dog passed away today from having 14 seizures the other night...He is a basenji x silky terrier..
Andrea Bulgaru I’m so sorry
It's very hard to watch. We just cry. Our dog has cancer, but has only had 2 grand meals. We got phenobarbital but our dog is still so active and playful that we don't want to gork her.
My female dashounds has had seizures since she was a pup and her mother died from a bad seizure
Very informative...thank you!!
