The Golden Age Of Rally

  • "The Golden Age Of Rally" is the title of a temporary exhibition hosted by Turin's National Automobile Museum between October 2022 and May 2023. And it's really something special.
    It all started with a Fiat X1/9, albeit a rather unique one.
    That's because it was the fortuitous discovery and subsequent restoration of the X1/9 Group 4 prototype he raced with Clay Regazzoni in the 1974 Giro D'Italia that spurred Gino Macaluso (European Rally Champion in 1972 with Raffaele Pinto and the Fiat 124 Abarth, later a successful entrepreneur in the horology sector) to build over the years an outstanding collection including the most important rally cars of all time.
    Following his death in 2010, his family took care of the collection and, in 2018, established in his memory the "Fondazione Gino Macaluso Per L'Auto Storica" to spread the culture of vintage racing and sports cars and pay tribute to those who gave their contribution to motorsport.
    All but one of the cars in the exhibition belong to the Foundation and are genuine racers painstakingly restored to their "works" specification. The display is a passionate, loving tribute to three decades of rallying history starting from the mid-60s, when the discipline saw its popularity spike following the Mini Cooper's successes, up until the early 1990s and the end of Lancia's involvement in the sport. #rally #history #motorsport

    What a fine collection!
    These are most of the cars that filled the dreams of my pre-driving childhood and adolescence.
    All it needs to be complete is an Ascona and one of the mad, mad Mercedes 500SLC monsters.
    Excellent video.
    Excellent narration.
    Happy, happy, happy.

      That's great to hear, thank you!!!
      I'm sure they'll add more cars in the future, but that will depend on whether the examples with the right provenance and pedigree will be available: these people only want the best, and I can fully understand them!

    Can we have a feature on the Lancia Delta itself next? I believe the standard car deserves more coverage beyond the HF's and Integrale's

    • @Matteo_Licata
      @Matteo_Licata  Рік тому +1

      You're 100% right, and I will duly cover the "regular" FWD Delta in the future. Unfortunately, I can't promise when that will happen though, as it depends on whether I'll get to film one someday.

    • @neverthar

      @@Matteo_Licata no worries, we can only hope because I believe the more "plain vanilla" models of Italian cars deserve more coverage as there's too much on the halo cars already. The Arna was a good step forward as no matter how it was/is panned, it deserved it's story to be told and I believe cars like the Delta and Brava to name a few deserves it's place amongs the Millenial enthusiasts

    Many thumps up for the video and the accurate and graphic storytelling!!!
    I have one question though , I didn't want to post in the 037 video...
    Did actually Lancia build the 200 Stradale 037, or as the urban myth says, showed half of them to the journalists and the comette, in one side of the city and then moved them quickly to the other as they hadn't produced enough?
    It's an intriguing one here...but a great story!
    :)

    • @Matteo_Licata
      @Matteo_Licata  Рік тому +4

      I'm glad you enjoyed the video! Regarding the 037 story, that's a baseless legend the Grand Tour perpetuated because it makes for good TV... But none of that is true. FIA officials and Lancia's period competitors weren't fools, and such a trick would have never worked in real life. Lancia made all the cars it had to make, the 200 road cars plus the 20 "evolution" cars, but not a single one more.

    The decision within the FIAT group to redirect all resources from the Lancia/Abarth team to the Alfa 155 DTM project (although initially successful) still puzzles me to this day. It was a blow for the Lancia brand and the 155 did not profit from the DTM succes.

    2 cars I have seen on the road in recent months that might surprise you - one of those original Alpine A110 - I was gobsmacked seeing it drive past me. And just a few weeks ago I was at the petrol pumps filling up and a guy pulled up in a white 1966 Ferrari 275 gtb. (We have a local billionaire here in town, I know he has a car collection so I am certain they both belonged to him.) The Ferrari V12 sounded absolutely amazing.

Chatted to its driver and I tried to ask him if I could film it someday, but that never happened, sadly.
