The Golden Age Of Rally

- "The Golden Age Of Rally" is the title of a temporary exhibition hosted by Turin's National Automobile Museum between October 2022 and May 2023. And it's really something special.
It all started with a Fiat X1/9, albeit a rather unique one.
That's because it was the fortuitous discovery and subsequent restoration of the X1/9 Group 4 prototype he raced with Clay Regazzoni in the 1974 Giro D'Italia that spurred Gino Macaluso (European Rally Champion in 1972 with Raffaele Pinto and the Fiat 124 Abarth, later a successful entrepreneur in the horology sector) to build over the years an outstanding collection including the most important rally cars of all time.
Following his death in 2010, his family took care of the collection and, in 2018, established in his memory the "Fondazione Gino Macaluso Per L'Auto Storica" to spread the culture of vintage racing and sports cars and pay tribute to those who gave their contribution to motorsport.
All but one of the cars in the exhibition belong to the Foundation and are genuine racers painstakingly restored to their "works" specification. The display is a passionate, loving tribute to three decades of rallying history starting from the mid-60s, when the discipline saw its popularity spike following the Mini Cooper's successes, up until the early 1990s and the end of Lancia's involvement in the sport. #rally #history #motorsport

What a fine collection!
These are most of the cars that filled the dreams of my pre-driving childhood and adolescence.
All it needs to be complete is an Ascona and one of the mad, mad Mercedes 500SLC monsters.
Excellent video.
Excellent narration.
Happy, happy, happy.
That's great to hear, thank you!!!
I'm sure they'll add more cars in the future, but that will depend on whether the examples with the right provenance and pedigree will be available: these people only want the best, and I can fully understand them!
The age of the brave of the Rally.. Grazie Prof. Matteo to remember when cars where driven by pilots.
Stunning Matteo. That is one unbelievable exhibition. All credit to the organisers and the research you've put into the video.
Thank you!!!!
A truly lovely collection.😃
It is indeed!
Thank you very much, Matteo. Fine video - as for me the golden era of rallying are the 70s and 80s, your story brightens up my day.
Thank you very much, glad you enjoyed it!
Wow! Just wow!
Awesome collection, needs an RS 1800 Mk2 Escort.
I wouldn't be surprised if they'll add one someday. I think they may still be looking for the one with the "right" history and provenance to be available
🫵 I miss the successful 1982 Opel Ascona 400 in this exhibition- an also important car indeed! But the other ones are still Great, too 👍🏁✌️
I guess it isn't there not because they didn't want one, but because they haven't yet been able to find the right example
Can we have a feature on the Lancia Delta itself next? I believe the standard car deserves more coverage beyond the HF's and Integrale's
You're 100% right, and I will duly cover the "regular" FWD Delta in the future. Unfortunately, I can't promise when that will happen though, as it depends on whether I'll get to film one someday.
@@Matteo_Licata no worries, we can only hope because I believe the more "plain vanilla" models of Italian cars deserve more coverage as there's too much on the halo cars already. The Arna was a good step forward as no matter how it was/is panned, it deserved it's story to be told and I believe cars like the Delta and Brava to name a few deserves it's place amongs the Millenial enthusiasts
I agree - definitely the golden age of rally - I wouldn’t even know now which manufacturers compete - maybe Renault, Toyota and Hyundai?
Yeah, it does seem to me too that the WRC has fallen completely out of enthusiasts’ radars. I don’t know the current competitors either
@@Matteo_Licata I had to look it up - Toyota, Ford & Hyundai!!
A new Lancia Delta is coming maybe 2025? first will be ypsilon in 2024 the LANCIA brand IS BACK BOIS............
Indeed. I've read 2028 for a new Delta, but I hope it'll arrive sooner.
Thanks for your work, again and again! Vivid enthusiasm und thorough research all in one place. 🍀
Thank you! This enthusiastic feedback is the fuel that keeps me going :)
Many thumps up for the video and the accurate and graphic storytelling!!!
I have one question though , I didn't want to post in the 037 video...
Did actually Lancia build the 200 Stradale 037, or as the urban myth says, showed half of them to the journalists and the comette, in one side of the city and then moved them quickly to the other as they hadn't produced enough?
It's an intriguing one here...but a great story!
:)
I'm glad you enjoyed the video! Regarding the 037 story, that's a baseless legend the Grand Tour perpetuated because it makes for good TV... But none of that is true. FIA officials and Lancia's period competitors weren't fools, and such a trick would have never worked in real life. Lancia made all the cars it had to make, the 200 road cars plus the 20 "evolution" cars, but not a single one more.
@@Matteo_Licata thanks for sharing some light over this 037 mito……….
💚🤍❤️
Beautiful exhibition, thank you for sharing it with us, Matteo!
Glad you enjoyed it! It's become one of my favorite videos on the channel :)
If I was putting together an exhibition of rally cars for the same period, this would be it. And that one family owns all these cars save one, and is willing to share them, is a blessing. The Safari Delta, sitting as it was raced, blew me away. Thank you Matteo for this video, and for the great work you do showcasing Italian motoring history
It is indeed fantastic, and thank you for your kind words. Warm feedback like this motivates me to keep making ever better videos :)
Hey! Thanks for following us, Matteo. We really like your videos. Terrific work!
Wow! Thank you very much for your appreciation of my work. I watch a ton of DW content here on UA-cam, including your beautiful reportages showing the different facets of car culture around the world, so this means a whole lot to me. Keep it up!
Great, and informative as always. Bravo Matteo! 👏🏻
But i miss the Alfa rallycars from the 50’s and the Gtv6 rallycar.
But maybe they are a story for another video. 😉
And the Alfasud bimotore is a interesting consept.
Thank you very much for this who is who of rally cars. 037 always my favourite. Ciao 🙋♂️
Magnificent stuff. What a collection and what a video- very well produced and shot. Co-incidently, I spent last evening reading various Lancia roadtests from 1980s/90s.
I've heard that the proposed range will be all-electric so I'll wait, in hope, for a hydrogen powered Lancia.
Glad you enjoyed it! Yes, Lancia is coming back, and that makes me happy indeed. We'll see what they'll come up with, but the first will be a new Ypsilon for 2024. A new Delta won't arrive until 2028, it seems
The decision within the FIAT group to redirect all resources from the Lancia/Abarth team to the Alfa 155 DTM project (although initially successful) still puzzles me to this day. It was a blow for the Lancia brand and the 155 did not profit from the DTM succes.
A great exhibition of legendary cars, love it.
It is truly special, indeed. Already visited it four or five times!
I visited the MAUTO in Turin just a few days after this special exhibition started and it's well worth the entrance fee.
Absolutely brilliant exhibition and brilliant video too, thank you Matteo!
Glad you enjoyed it!!!
Lovely tour, feel so fortunate to have seen the 80's onwards cars in action on stages in New Zealand, especially the 037 and Group B era. So long ago, but unforgettable
Thank you. Those cars in action must have been amazing to witness!
@@Matteo_Licata Even more surprising to see genuine road going versions of the Stratos, 037, and S4 doing demo runs before a tarmac stage of the recent WRC! Quite a few Integrale still here too considering the size of our (tiny) market.
Surly the finest collection of rally cars in existence. Only others you could add are the Mk2 Escort, Opel Manta 400 and possibly Vauxhall Chevet HSR and Talbot Sunbeam Lotus and and and 😁
I think they haven’t got a Mk2 Escort or a Manta 400 only because they haven’t yet found the examples with the right provenance and pedigree…
Very very nice rallye cars , flash-back to the 80's and 90's...The golden period of the iconic rallye cars....Amazing youngtimers...
2 cars I have seen on the road in recent months that might surprise you - one of those original Alpine A110 - I was gobsmacked seeing it drive past me. And just a few weeks ago I was at the petrol pumps filling up and a guy pulled up in a white 1966 Ferrari 275 gtb. (We have a local billionaire here in town, I know he has a car collection so I am certain they both belonged to him.) The Ferrari V12 sounded absolutely amazing.
Great video again, thanks for posting, I enjoyed it - those cars!!
Such random encounters with automobile royalty are priceless: I still remember when, about a year ago, I stopped for fuel on the way to the gym and there I find an immaculate Lancia Flaminia Sport bodied by Touring Superleggera... Chatted to its driver and I tried to ask him if I could film it someday, but that never happened, sadly.
Proper real racing / rallying cars - from the heydays and always worth a look. Its why I love the Goodwood Festival races. Older racing cars who's owners want to race not just look at and if it gets bent so what they will fix it
You can keep all your super-duper hyper cars... I'll take this group of real world warriors any day.
Rain and tears.
An unrepeatable era
Cool video on a cool exhibition with cool cars... 😀
Again, a great Video, Matteo. Thank you. You have to go to the 2023 Edition of the Rallyelegend at San Marino. There you will see nearly all of the shown vehicles in Action, that´s an impressive experience. It´s worth the way to San Marino.......
Thank you!!! Yes, I definitely should go to Rallylegend next year, I agree!!!
Watched you from day one Matteo, brilliant vids, keep them coming ❤
Wow, that’s amazing! Thank you very much for your support, I’m glad you’ve enjoyed my stuff for such a long time!
Wow, that's a lot of videos, and everyone of them very informative!
Nothing Bwats Lancia ...😘😘😎😎
Super beautiful great timing and explaining si well never senbefore so many well shawn and describef rally cars
Thank you
Glad you enjoyed it!!
It was a truly a special era for rallying.Todays popping and banging antilagged rally cars do nothing for me...
I feel the same. Modern WRC cars are the fastest ever and do amazing things, yet rallies seem to have fallen off most enthusiasts' radars...
Today’s WRC might be a far cry from yesterday’s glory, yet it’s not all bad and we better support it as long as there still are ICE powered cars running the woods and fields. In times of electrification and climate activists, we might be witnessing the last gasp of rallying as we know and love it.
@@stevieray6216 I agree and I watch the WRC when I can, also F1
Another Magnifique Presentation!
Thank you!!!

Absolutely fantastic piece, i wonder why this us buried by UA-cam.
Even I had to look for it, although I'm subscribed and have the Bell on!
Thank you for your appreciation :)
Great powerslide on the screen at 2:53!
Mateo, did you post this on ACI TV? I saw it the other night.
No I didn't, but someone else sure did, if you saw it there!
Excellent video. Grazia Mille. Greetings from South Africa
