I try to get there an hour before sunrise especially in the winter and put my backpack with my gear in it out on my tailgate and let the glass acclimate so I don't have fog over issues..Plus like you said, get to your location early and you can be setup and ready for action as soon as you have enough light and you're not rolling in disturbing your birds..good tip!

Backlit can be awesome at times but usually if the sun is behind your subject, my shots do not look desirable. lol
