I ran boat based nature/wildlife/photography tours for 25 years and clients with children would sometimes say, "My son or daughter wants to be a wildlife photographer, do you have any advice for them?" My most common answer would be, "Tell them to become a doctor, lawyer, stock broker, college professor, etc so they can earn a lot of money to buy expensive camera gear and travel to a lot of great wildlife areas during vacations. They will end up spending more time in the field taking great photos than most pros. If they won't listen and continue to want to be a pro wildlife photographer tell them to first go to a good secretarial school where they can learn typing, computer operation, and most important of all how to create functional filing systems for the tons and tons of paperwork they will be having to deal with. Having finally retired and reentered the world of non professional photography I am once again enjoying more great time in the field and a blessed absence of paperwork! The grass may look greener in the pro photo field but believe me when I say the real enjoyment of photography is experienced as an amateur with none of the hassles and tons more freedom to follow one’s photographic passion!

Great post, and point taken. Otoh, it is a unique privilege to be able to do for a living what you love enough to otherwise do for free, even with the hassles. And in a capitalist society it is a tribute to your artistic or technical prowess to actually get paid for your work.

Simon, Thank you as always. Your videos are a delight to watch, informative and encouraging. It's obvious that you spend a great deal of time in creating these videos...not a second is wasted. Prior to this video being posted, I just had the rhetorical question in my mind about how much time you spend preparing your videos; plus, the fact that you are very consistent about posting them weekly! Further, I went back & watched some of your early videos...they have improved dramatically from your early days! Trips aside, just the videos are a full-time job! Still, I suspect that it beats all the time you spent with a desk job. Finally, one of your videos focused on getting good shots of birds, esp. when bathing & how to capture the details of the birds as they arise from the water. I've been focusing on this, esp. at a local pond where the ducks are accustomed to humans. I've captured some better shots and yesterday, I shot some better photos yet, of a Mallard Drake & a Canada Goose. As I'm going through my shots, you were at the front of my mind, just behind the wings of the birds! :) Thank you for all being such a great instructor!

pretty similar to our daily routine too. We usually get out 3-5 days a week for about 8-9 hours per day. Sorting, editing and culling photos is another 3-4 hours which I usually do on the off day or at night after I rest a bit and get a bite to eat. Wildlife and nature photography; you can be hot, cold, thirsty, wet, dry, laying in mud, brushing dust off your gear, wake up and be on the road before sunrise, and get home after dark many times all on the same day. I love it and wouldn't trade it for anything. After I retired from a corporate career, this is my life now and I love it. Thanks for sharing your day with us.

I’m just a few years away from retirement. I got into bird photography about 3 years ago. It’s quite a compelling (addictive) hobby, and I spend every minute I can in nature. Good thing I’ve always been an early riser! I’ve always tried to monetize everything over the years. But, I have absolutely no desire to try and make money off my photography. No offense to others that might want to do that. I’m not particularly religious, but for me, nature photography is my respite. It’s my church. It’s my way of connecting with God. I’m not rich by any means, but this one is just for me!

Bought my first camera and went out in the field yesterday traversing the Columbia River Gorge/Eastern Oregon. I’m still learning the camera functions, but managed to capture decent shots of vultures, wild flowers and even a rattlesnake! As a beginner I’m finding your channel incredibly helpful and inspirational. Also definitely need Milanote in my life!

Hi Simon, I have to say that the quality of your videos has increased over the time I've been subscribed. I also love this idea of best life. I'll leave all the business negotiations to you and just keep my eye on retirement in five years so I can switch from outdoors photography every couple of weekends to whenever I want :-D

So nice that you shared how the “sausage is made.” It’s so easy to glamorize successful people, seeing how hard you work at everything really brings it down to earth. That app looks really slick. I’ve used Trello for a long time but Milanote looks worth trying! I get that they’re a sponsor but it looks like you really use the product. Either that or you took a lot of time to set up a demo for us!
