  • Action and thrills fill the screen in DAREDEVILS OF THE RED CIRCLE! Chapter 1 follows the interview with guest William Winckler discussing the career of his father, child actor Bobby Winckler who stars in the serial. Bobby was one of Hollywood's busiest young actors and played many a cowboy who rode with the top western heroes during movies Golden Age. He was child actor Robert “Bobby” Winckler (usually credited as “Winkler”) and you’ve probably seen him dozens of times in a variety of roles. Discovered by Charlie Chaplin’s wife, Mildred Harris, who introduced the youngster to producer Hal Roach, Bobby appeared at the studio with Spanky and Alfalfa in the Our Gang comedies and even made NOTHING BUT TROUBLE with the comedy duo, Stan Laurel & Oliver Hardy.
Between the ages of six and 18, Winkler was featured in a variety of movies, serials, cartoons, short subjects and radio shows. He made westerns with Roy Rogers, Gene Autry, Bob Steele, George Montgomery, the 3 Mesquiteers, Wild Bill Elliott, Johnny Mack Brown, Richard Dix and Tim McCoy. He was in Chapter One of Republic Studios best serials, DAREDEVILS OF THE RED CIRCLE, directed by action specialist William Witney, which follows immediately after the interview with his son, ULTRA-MAN producer, William Winckler.
The youngster made non-western features like the Preston Sturges classic SULLIVAN’S TRAVELS with Joel McCrea, PRIDE OF THE YANKEES with Gary Cooper, BOYS TOWN with Spencer Tracy, BABES IN ARMS with Mickey Rooney and Judy Garland, AT THE CIRCUS with the Marx Brothers and THIS GUN FOR HIRE starring Alan Ladd. Winkler was an actor on hundreds of old time radio shows and the voice of many cartoon characters, including “Scrappy” in SCRAPPY’S SIDE SHOW.
If you're a fan of Republic westerns, Our Gang comedies and serials, you’ll want to join Rob Word to find out more of Bobby's Hollywood story from his producer son, William Winckler, as dazzles a packed house of film buffs in the Autry Museum's Café for this edition of A WORD ON WESTERNS recorded November 2015.

Herman Brix is Bruce Bennett. Wunna the lesser known Tarzans.
Had a long career in film (Including "The Treasure of the Sierra Madre") and on TV.
Also a long life. Died at an even century.

@@AWordonWesterns He always seemed an unlikely Tarzan to me. Or Olympic shot putter for that matter while being both. Came across as too cerebral to have swung from a vine or been a jock. Played a lot of high ranking Military officers, Doctors, authority figures and Scientists. I remember him most from "Science Fiction Theatre," a show that ran in after school syndication forever when I was a kid, seemingly geared for youngsters like myself who were disinclined to do their homework.
Did a lotta Westerns too. Did you like him?Too bad you weren't able to get him for the show.

It's criminal that those early actors got nothing from the reruns of their work that have since been aired on television endless times, while the cast of "Friends" are getting a reported 20 million dollars a year to this very day.
Hey, I'd rather watch Bobby Winkler acting with Gene Autry or Joel McRea and Veronica Lake in "Sullivan's Travels" than anything with those "Seinfeld" ripoff actors in it, only one of which I can actually name.
That'd be David Schwimmer, only because he happened to be in "Band of Brothers" in which I'll grant he did a pretty good job. Although it's certain he didn't take the role cuz he needed the money.

Good HOLLYWOOD history from William Winkler...
But Rob, he brought up the subject of the legendary IVERSON'S Ranch, holy ground for countless "B" movie westerns, TV westerns, serials and even some 'A' pictures. Well over a 1,000 movies and TV episodes...
I produced the very first documentary (MATINEE RANCH)on IVERSON'S in 1994, and I had some stars from Republic attend the premiere at the old Iverson Ranch house. I made the 2hr. salute as a demo hoping to get AMC, and later TCM interested in making a more professional effort, of course they were not interested as the subject was deemed uninteresting.
Two years later, Oscar winning sound designer Ben Burtt did a more professional and more personal salute (FANTASY RANCH), and that too failed to make any impression with the so-called HOLLYWOOD classic movies elitists.
So Rob, if you really want to show the hallowed ground of westerns, serials etc., the rocks and dusty trails ridden by every cowboy and comic book hero, then I'd love to help out!
Those blessed 500 acres in the Santa Susana Pass, now divided by the Simi Ronald Reagan freeway, were the Wild West that HOLLYWOOD literally had it's own backyard aka it's 30-mile Studio Zone.
I got to meet some of the Iverson family, and I was there to witness the big bulldozers moving the huge boulders around for the townhomes on the Lower Ranch, and the multi-million dollar homes on the Upper Ranch.
I think your WOW audience would be truly WOWed by it !

    • @AWordonWesterns

That was an amazing location, graham. My friend Steve Latshaw continues to post many photos of Iverson's, then and now, and writes about it on Facebook.

    • @grahamhill6340
      @grahamhill6340 3 місяці тому

@@AWordonWesterns Like I said Rob, more westerns and more matinee serials have been shot on those IVERSON 500 rocky acres than anywhere else on earth...
And most western fans have no idea or probably don't even notice or even care about that stunning fact. They had a Cowboy Walk of Fame at the ranch home of Joe Iverson, even a ceremony of western stars leaving their prints in the concrete for my premiere.
John Wayne literally stepped on and off of the stage in STAGECOACH, and the LONE RANGER TV intro and so many other iconic things, even ELVIS rode onto the ranch for one of his movies!
Nestled among the Spahn, Bell, Corriganville and a few other ranches that all ran second to Iversons.
