  • Beverly Hills Public Relations executive Edward Lozzi interviewed Greta Garbo twice in the early 1980's for CNN on one of her trips to his city. The movie Garbo Talks had just been released with Anne Bancroft. Garbo, still active in her 80's was again top news (reluctantly) at this time.

Ran into her in NYC in 1981. Zaxman's Drug Store. She was wearing an overcoat with a little white dog sticking its head out of the pocket. I was startled and blurted out, "Is that really you"?? She looks at me deadpan and says "Of course it is darling". I'll never forget it.

actrices. Why use the male form. I think that is so degrading to all actrices. Bette Davis, Barbara Stanwyck, Marlene Dietrich, etc, they all called themselves actrices. And very proud doing so. So please stop with using the male form. Beeing an actrice is great as well.

People always repeat this, but it’s not precisely true that she never said it. She gives the line “I want to be alone” in the film “Grand Hotel,” her biggest box office hit. “I want to be let alone” is something Greta expressed in her private life, per an interview she gave to Life Magazine in the 1950s. But the famous line “I want to be alone” comes from a movie and has been parodied since the early 30s.

"The Swedish Sphinx" is the most apt demonym to describe Garbo in her later years. I've ALWAYS been utterly fascinated by her myself. I've seen ALL of her films, and she was a PURE force of nature onscreen. A more BRILLIANT actress didn't exist at the time. She was TRULY unique. There will NEVER be anyone like her again.

She was very astute. She knew she had already reached legendary icon status. She didn’t have to work anymore bc of the status she reached. Bc of that, everyone from politicians, royalty, famous actors, and famous musicians all wanted to be around the divine Garbo even though she had stopped working. Not many celebrities can maintain their relevancy as she did without doing anything. There was no one else like her and never will be. By being so secretive, it only made her that much more famous. Of course she never got tired of being Garbo. Otherwise she wouldn’t have an issue with people calling her Greta. She wanted to be known as Garbo like the famous theatre actresses before her time who were known by only one name. I love Garbo if you can’t tell by my screen name.

    "Gods? Godesses?"
Something tells me had he referred to Greta as a godess during that interview, it wouldn't have lasted long. It would have reminded her- and him- as to why she had reached her limits in that industry as early as she did.
Some people navigate their postion as popular actors quite well. They adjust to the adoration, yet also strike a balance between that and have well ground themselves in the reality of who they really are. Others get sucked up into it and feed off that overglorified adulation. Once the applause stops, it's 2 pills away from them wanting to jump off a tall building. Greta wanted her space. She understood and accepted the glory. She knew she was good. But she needed her space. It's as simple as that. She never said "I want to be alone". But rather, "I want to be let alone. There is a difference". Yes, there is. All the intense paparazzi and rumors about who she was, who she was with got on her nerves. Her glamerous lifestyle here in the states did not live up to her fond memories back in Sweden. So, in being consistent and true to her identity, she STAYED true to herself and showed us all, "You can paint a picture of me anyway you want, but you are not changing me".
All the privileges and fortune she got also afforded her the opportunity to walk away from it all. And when "2 Faced Women" flopped, she saw that as an opportunity to say "See this? I ain't all that", and left.
    I applaud her for that.

She complained to him about journalists who pretended to have spoken to her but had never met her! When one reads his book (one can get it in english too) one feels that THIS is the real Garbo. I haven't read it in English, only Swedish though. Here one can listen to a recording of her speaking to him on the telephone. She is truly hilarious I can tell you!

This guy was totally making this up. Any Garbo enthusiast knows this bc since her death, thru close friends and family who spoke about her, there have come about several well researched bios that contain a lot of info on what she was about. And all agree she would never have given an interview, esp like this. Also, she didn't leave Hollywood. WW2 became a problem bc profits from her movies came mostly from Europe. She tore up her contract with MGM and didn't take contractual money owed to her at that time bc she was fair and honest. Her plan was to come back after the war. But she was stabbed in the back. Her contract was never picked back up after the war. Friends knew never to ask her why she quit the movies. She told them never to ask her. I would imagine she was deeply hurt by how Hollywood discarded her. Granted, newer people had taken over production by then, but what a loss that no one took the opportunity to find roles for her. But that was Hollywood. They threw out a lot of great female talent once they reached a certain age. But Garbo had made a fortune and invested her money well. So unlike Crawford, Davis, Swanson and Deitrich she gave the middle finger salute and gave up on what she did best. If only someone could produce her true story in the right way, but hell, who could play Garbo and get it right? NO ONE!

I'm glad you said that, because I always remembered how everyone said she was a recluse so it seemed totally fabricated that Garbo would let this guy interview her, not to mention talk about her personal life with men!! Also it was well known that her most closet intimate relationships were with women, not men....! This guy is a fraud!
Thank u for the extra info!

I'm so sorry The Two faced Woman was a flop. I love that film and have seen it several times. Once in Paris I went to see it with a friend in an afternoon showing and we sat through it twice, delighted. Why did she stop? In Hollywood the girl next door type was becoming more popular and I think Two-Faced-Woman was an attempt to push her somewhat in that direction .As the twin sister of the rather severe skiing teacher she was able to bring back the Garbo allure. Ortson Welles talked about the great stars he most admired and the first name he mentions is that of Garbo. He says that era of great stars is over and we are now in the era of pop music. - to my distress. Grand Hotel was perhaps the greatest movie in whch she appeared. The other films were somewhat kitsch saved by her appearance in them The philosopher Adorno - my beloved Master - wrote in a letter that he had seen Anna Karenina with Garbo and that the film was dreadful. I thought, "Silly man, you don't go to a film like that to see Tolstoy but Garbo's symphony of movements and gestures and facial expressions.Of course I realise that the cinema , apart from the actors, had to move in a modern but not so commercial direction. Garbo in her early days did appear in Germany in an Expressionist film called Joyless Street and she was wonderfully expressive in it.

I don’t believe a word that comes out of his mouth. Not at all. He reminds me of those people who have a chance semi-encounter with a celebrity and then spouts details as if they’re bosom buddies. Liar.

You didn't know her on a personal level to be jumping to harsh judgments. Also, infidelity doesn't inherently make the individual a bad person.

... that means you, yourself can never read anything written by another person, because that would mean compromising your ability to think like an individual. Why should you believe anything you read?
The information I gathered was by her biographer, who knows her better than you or I.
