Garbo was smart about finances. She had good financial advice. She invested in properties and other things which continued to skyrocket in value. She was an amazing screen actress. However, she had dignity and class. She was independent and had the financial independence to do exactly as she wanted. She never had to make a comeback or pay back taxes, or do dog food or diaper commercials to make a living in her later years. She did not pop up on superficial and trashy talk shows. She was allergic to "bullshit" and would not take part in it.

Yes, Garbo's "pad" as the idiotic title describes her home, was bustling with activity. Okay, but seriously... you're making things up. Unless a lot of people are lying, and her own letters that were auctioned are lying, Garbo preferred being alone and, except for the occasional visitor and vacation trip, spent her life alone.

I barely recognize the place, actually. The furniture is COMPLETELY different....all the French antiques she loved are gone. The bar was not there, was added after her death. I realize that living there since the 50s, much had to be updated to sell the apartment, venetian old-style blinds, etc., but I actually liked it better the way Garbo had it all assembled. She bought what she liked and she had A LOT of it crammed in there....all beautiful, of course. Garbo would barely recognize this modernization of her place, that's for sure.

Greta Garbo took Sir Anthony Quinn with her to buy some Picasso's. She bought all of them! Then she turned to Sir Anthony Quinn and said something, "Oh, I'm sorry, you wanted to buy one too." And he said, "No, I don't want to be Pope, I .. I." Then he realized that it had nothing to do with his movie SHOES OF THE FISHERMAN. And Greta said to Sir Anthony Qulinn, "Tony, how selfish of me, you can buy the pink one." And he said, "No, no, I can't buy the Pink One." And in her inimitable way said, "I know you're not a fairy, you must buy it, Tony." And he said, "Okay, I'll buy it." He wrote the auctioneer a post-dated check. He went to his house and sold it for $50,000 just to buy the painting not to break Greta Garbo's heart. Sir Anthony Quinn then had to go back and take whichever part Hollywood producers offered him. Today, Sir Anthony Quinn's most valuable possession is the 'Pink' Pablo Picasso painting which Greta Garbo insisted he buy it. He has donated it so it hangs in one of Mexico's national museums for all Mexican museum visitors would remember the greatest Spanish painter in history -- Vic Alexander, Son of Nimrod the Jewish Producer of great movies.

2:12 Amedeo Modigliani, an Italian Jew, a true original which depicts the elongated neck which he was famous for in (all) his paintings. This was a painting of his wife as she posed for many of his paintings. Amedeo Modigliani lived in the time of Picasso and died before he realized he was famous. Many artists are famous in death and worth little in life. His life was a personal struggle, but he lives in the minds of those who adore him for his raw energy and unique interpretation of the human form.

How charming how those distant relatives without any own achievements, sell out everything that once was hers. They must be really broke to sell out like that.

Guess what? Units like Garbo's still have building fees and property taxes. Not to mention the heirs have to pay an inheritance tax.

@@Scorchy666 If they kept it without changing hands, the property tax would be very low if it remained assessed on the original purchase price.

personally i think the view is "depressing"...do not know that much about nyc but was/is the east side less crowded, not as "hip and fashionable" and more secluded along the east river and that is why she chose it?

@Pat Kat Exquisite. Inflate that to today, and imagine buying an apartment like this for that price. The reality is people had far more opportunity back then, when the population was much less and possibility for each person was much more. Those days of opportunity are long gone. The only reason her estate was valued so high was because of all the inflation that occurred by the time she died. I wonder what kind of property tax or maintenance she even paid, if the costs stayed assessed on that low purchase price- probably very little.
