  • This is Madhouse anime adaptation of "Sousou no Frieren (Frieren: Beyond Journey's End)".
Sousou no Frieren / Frieren: Beyond Journey's End
The demon king has been defeated, and the victorious hero party returns home before disbanding. The four-mage Frieren, hero Himmel, priest Heiter, and warrior Eisen - reminisce about their decade-long journey as the moment to bid each other farewell arrives. But the passing of time is different for elves, thus Frieren witnesses her companions slowly pass away one by one.
Before his death, Heiter manages to foist a young human apprentice called Fern onto Frieren. Driven by the elf's passion for collecting a myriad of magic spells, the pair embarks on a seemingly aimless journey, revisiting the places that the heroes of yore had visited. Along their travels, Frieren slowly confronts her regrets of missed opportunities to form deeper bonds with her now-deceased comrades.

Y'know, after we learn later that demons mimic human speech patterns as a defense mechanism/hunting tool, it really puts to mind how old fashioned Qual truly is. Unlike other demons he doesn't even pretend to look human, because back in the day his magic was so powerful he didn't need to. In a weird way it almost makes the other demons seem more monstrous, because Qual at least is "honest" in how he appears: an "inhumane" and vicious creature whose only desire is to kill, consume, and destroy. There is literally no difference between him and other demons other than appearance

It was revealed after Fern used Zoltraak on a demon, that the spell has been drastically altered to be significantly more lethal to demonkind. I love how Frieren subverts the Tolkien-style narrative of magic where ancient magicks are more powerful than modern magicks, a trope that has been copied to oblivion. In Tolkien's universe, the amount of magic in the world decreases with time. Frieren's magic system more closely mirrors humanity's advancement in warfare, where our methods of killing each other have only gotten better over time. It's like the Roman Army at the height of their power attempting to go against a modern military, it would be a slaughter.
That must be why Frieren loves magic, as far as she's concerned, magic is constantly moving at a breakneck pace.

Flammes magic is about as strange as it gets. Her barrier spells develop, mature and grow very slow and steadily.
It's almost like planting demon free zones in unusual and innocuous places. Areas that get ignored for centuries and decades till someone inadvertently stumbles into it.
Then they build an outpost, fortress and finally city in the safe zone before obtaining the means to fight back and win. That's really fighting a very long war when granted limited lifespans. The faith entrusted to future generations to pull this off is extraordinary.

I like that Frieren considers legendary class spells to be magic that solves mundane tasks. Spells that make your life more convenient are probably much more useful in your day to day lives than combat magic.
Which, by the way, modern combat magic seems to consist of zoltrark, basic defence, and flying. I’m sure 80 years ago, Frieren used many other kinds of attack and defensive spells, but since zoltrark was so powerful, it completely changed the meta. All those spells Frieren has in her back pocket will probably never be used again because those three basic attack spells are significantly more effective in 99% of situations. But the legendary spells will never not be useful, hence why they are legendary.

More than that, it’s considered mundane xD. Fern calls it an “ordinary attack spell”. I imagine it’s like how a civil war era soldier would look at a revolver and see it as one of the most dangerous weapons to exist. It fires 6 shots before needing to reload! But show that to a modern soldier and he’d probably call it just any other gun, worse he’d considered it a novelty, subpar gun. Whereas to the civil war era soldier the revolver is one of the most complex and difficult to produce weapons on earth, a modern soldier is surrounded by assault rifles, and machine guns, never mind that his standard issue sidearm can fire more bullets, with more accuracy, than a civil war era revolver ever could.

@@ravenblood1954 It being an "ordinary attack spell" is simply terrifying. It's so effective at what it does that every mage needed to learn it. That doesn't make it weak or insignificant but quite the opposite. It is the meta of all attack magic. Qual even shows in this brief fight that it's counter while effective is imperfect. He prob would have won over either of them in a 1v1 as Fieren herself even states that Zoltraak is the spell that can possibly kill her as she can't defend against it instantly like with other spells. Qual figured out all he needed to do was to brute force the defense magic.

Macht said it well. Qual's only failure was that he made his signature spell so perfect it could be understood and replicated by humans (i.e., others). As a broad analogy, that means he clearly understood and laid out the functions of each component of the spell in its incantation, such that anyone who had an understanding of basic magical theory and employed logic could understand his work. It wasn't a personalised hack-job of duct-taped rituals around a genuinely powerful core (like much of the Mechanicus' technology in Warhammer 40k), it was a well-engineered no-nonsense weapon down to the last "bolt".

That said, it would be cool to see him take her on again had he not been frozen in time, especially considering how quickly he figured out their magic and even saw Frierens attack coming. She was right to double team him with Fern, cuz without her as a distraction, the fight might have been a lot riskier.

Serie would have wiped the floor with him even in his prime (duh), kraft would have been more than enough, after that it's down to the ~45 first class mage. I don't see qual being beaten by anyone else tbh.
Knowing fern only handled the defense even if she is still pretty inexperienced at this point should tell manga readers enough about the skill level required to actually beat this gigachad.
      spoiler section:
I'm convinced it just HAD to be frieren because she is literally doomguy, killing demons is kind of her thing. frieren vs any demon is an unfair matchup for the demon because of how hyper specialized at killing demons she is. even if they are stronger like qual or macht she is still a pain in the ass for them. Fern obviously becomes a first rate mage a year after this scene and she was still a prodige when she first took the tests by being the youngest third rate mage presumably before or slightly after frieren showed up. Despite that frieren only allowed her to handle the defense meaning to me she trusted fern enough with this task while simultaneously being certain she is uncapable of actually defeating qual. Her, a future first rate uncapapable of defeating qual at this point when he is at his weakest. During the Aura arc frieren lets fern and stark fend for themselves against 2 demons she is definetly the kind of teacher who throws you off a cliff to teach you a lesson but she still chose to defeat qual herself. Only a first rate mage could take down qual here, emphasis on could.
Frieren takes no chance with this guy and it shows, he is one of the 11 people who bested her after all.

Idk man. Him replicating the defense magic, finding it’s weakness, and finally Those frames of him literally brute forcing and DESTROYING two of Fern’s barriers with that same killing magic says otherwise.
He would have absolutely killed anyone else if Frieren didn’t take him out by flying.

If the genius like Einstein and Tesla were to revive today, they would be confused for a few weeks then after a month of 2 they would be the top of the modern field. NEVER underestimate the pioneers about anything, they created the concept, any other genius who excelled in it simply copied it and added thier own spice.

Fern learned her signature technique from this battle. Saturate until you calculate your opponent's limit, then hit them with exactly enough to shatter their defenses and defeat them.

I'm not sure if it's just because he was always smiling, but he seemed to take some sort of twisted pride in the fact that they killed him with his own spell and that his spell has become essentially the foundation for many other magics.

Given that demons are all about their status as mages, Quall may have died proud to know that everyone would know and use his spell and that in a sense, he would be remembered long after his death.

I feel like this anime came out of nowhere and is such a great show already. Madhouse cooking, haven't seen anything from them for such a long time, but this is fantastic. A fantasy slice of life for now, but the music and backgrounds are enough to carry the whole thing.
