You don't have to apologise for it... You know as Malaysian, I also like to ask anyone that talk to me, where they're from, such as which state or hometown. From there we can know their culture, different state we have different culture.. As you said if you talk about weather to start a conversation, it's like a fake communications because you can see whether it's rain or a hot day😅 If people ask where you from, when you are in KL you can mention like maybe Ampang or Jalan Jelatek. When you are not in KL, you can say from KL.. We don't need your address 😅😅 We won't go to your house😂😂😂, it just how we started a conversations. When I get home, I have forget what are we talking about already😂😂😂 If you want to travel, just drive somewhere without searching intensively, just relax and chill.. Malaysian are very diverse culturally. You will find that each ethnic communicate differently. Even Malaysians from other states communicate differently. The learning curve never stops. Stay strong Ichang and Jimmy. We all love you both.
Instead of putting the bar too high for yourselves, how about doing everyday things like going to the mall, restaurants, market, meeting people, friends etc? Personally, I love your channel because of your honest reactions to things in Malaysia and its people. You don't have to be travelling all over Malaysia to give us that content, you know. Even going to the local wet market, seeing how different things are with what you have in Japan would be great content, btw. We would love to see your reactions to normal everyday things too, and then educate us about how things are done back in your own country. Even a trip to the nearest pasar malam could be an interesting content if you go about it the right way. Either way, I'm praying for your success and don't worry too much about the Malaysian people, we don't actually take offense in every little thing, and those who did, they are just trolls and haters so ignore them. No need for apologies! I saw nothing wrong about you guys’ observations on cultural differences and quirks. On the contrary, I’m enjoying them as much as the travel and all the makan adventures. There’s a lot we can learn from each other and you guys simply pointed out - based on your experiences - some strange quirks with Malaysians. All valid and we all know that despite best intentions, we will always offend someone and while I see no reason to apologize, you guys took the high road anyways. Class Act. Keep up the great work!
Be yourself. Don't change who you are. There will always be sour apples where ever you go. If you think their question is prying, you can tell them in a polite way but firm that you'd rather not answer that question. And if they get offended by that, then that's their problem. You can't make everyone happy.
Please guys you don't have to apologise. Sometimes we forget that non Malaysians are brought up differently from ours. So in fact we are the ones who should apologise to both of you by asking personal questions that make you uncomfortable. Actually your talking videos gives are interesting looking at things from your perspective. I think when people start asking whether you don't like Malaysia and that sort of things is because we are worried that foreigners like you, our beloved guests are offended by our words or actions. Even us Malaysians, don't feel comfortable being asked personal questions. When asked where you stay, just tell them, Ohh somewhere around bla bla whatever area..don't have to be specific..because they also don't bother where exactly you stay. If they ask about your income...what i normally would say is "Yea, its enough for my daily needs. Or you can say, enough for the both of us"..something of that nature. Please continue your talking videos..something different for us to look forward to. I gained a lot of insights about Japanese opinions regarding their culture shock. Its also a good way for us to understand better about both of you. 👍👍👍 This is just my suggestion. Maybe you can do a collaboration with some Japanese expats who have lived in Malaysia for very long and do the talking video with them. Aya san from Aya Channel is a good candidate. Chaimaru channel has just given birth to a baby boy here in Malaysia...just to name another. There's Chongmage channel, Taka and Sho san. Sho is quite good in Malay even though both just arrived this year.

I believe there's nothing offensive when a foreigner like Jimmy goes thru the trouble to make a video to clear up something that's confusing to him. So an explanation on their previous video would be sufficient, but not to the extent of finding it offensive. It's like you finding it offensive when your kid ask you a question - isn't that a bit extreme?!

There is no need to be so serious. One person may be offended but a lot of people are not. I can see your humour and where you are coming from when Malaysian ask where do you stay. Cultural differences will always be there. If everyone is the same, the fun of travelling will not be there. You are not required to say only nice things about Malaysia. Sometimes we also neglect our foreign friends feelings or unware of different upbringings which may feel weird or uncomfortable being asked a privacy questions. Haha some Malaysians are very kepochi!! Especially the aunties and uncles. So your next skill is to know which question is ice breaker / to find a connection, and which question is kepochi, and the next level is to know how to politely "tepis" the kepochi questions. This way your "HP" will go up and you can "power up" 😊
@@ichangrm but IChang and Jimmy, after you power up from "tepis" the kepochi uncles and aunties, you will need to master the "Boss Level Flexer", the most dangerous malaysian out there. The boss level flexer will trick you by asking a question to break the ice, but when you answer he will not make a connection but he will "flex". E.g. if he ask where you stay and you answer ampang, the flexer will say "You know how many Dato lives in Ampang? They all my friend. I also have house in Ampang but just to park my sports car". And if the question is where are you from and you say japan he will say "If I go holiday in japan I never eat lawson's chicken popcorn. I only eat wagyu". When you can "tepis" the "Boss Level Flexer" then your HP and Power Up is x 10! Haha

One of the most important things to understand and perhaps even assimilate into Malaysian culture is to take your time to appreciate the simple little things of life in Malaysia. Have moments for yourselves to experience the various facets of everyday living without worrying about documenting them. Malaysians are generally warm and understanding, and we definitely understand your struggles and aspirations. Believe it or not, your videos have actually connected Malaysians even more. Perhaps in some future videos both of you might want to join photography clubs or videography clubs, or even cooking clubs, or some other social shared interest clubs, where they may boost your understanding of Malaysia and its people even further. I'm a private person myself. When i stayed abroad, i used not to response to the 'where are you staying' question but came back to Malaysia, it's a common question to ask. It'll lead to the warm conversations. Thus, no need to apologise of your misunderstanding towards our culture. As you said 'kepochi', Malaysians also 'kepochi' in our own way🤭🤣 Nonetheless, thank you for trying to blend in with our unique cultures❤

To make it short when the local ask: Examples Where you stay? - Kuala Lumpur at Mont Kiara (No details addres) How much you get from YT? - Ok lah sikit je/ just little. (With smile.) Do you have a kids? - Not yet (with smile) You married? - Yes many times (joke face) All questions you can answer it with jokes. Mostly they ask questions because they want to start the conversations and they are not serious. 😎
I love how you guys are so open to learning our cultural differences. And we Malaysians also need to open our heart to differences in other peples culture. Even different household will have different culture on how they were raised by their parents. So of course it will be a whole new world for you guys to adapt with our culture and custom. i think generally people should not simply give their address or even share the building where you live. But i think the intention behind the question 'where do you stay' is not to ask for your address. It's just to know which area so that people can recommend more food or any attractions around your area. Being a Malaysian myself i get that question alot, and i would just answer 'i stay near Puchong' (example)

I'm a very private person. I usually just reply the "Where you stay?" with simple answer like the region that I'm staying. Pretty broad but still a good answer imo. I live in Petaling Jaya, BTW.

I watched yr video where you talked about certain question which to Japanese was impolite, but I didnt find any part offensive, because you two explaint it clearly that it might be normal for M'sian & no offence intended. To me that's what makes us different & that why we should travel more, see more,understand & learn more ,& open our minds to be tolerent to people of different colour & believe. You don't need to apologise at all! Even as a Malaysian, I feel a stranger asking me such a personal question is quite intrusive. What more if I was in the public eye. People forget that just because you always see them on TV, that you guys are friends and can ask such personal questions. Hi ichang 👋🏻 this is something that I learnt from my previous training on interpersonal communication where my instructor had given me some examples based on Malaysian case awhile ago. When people asked you where do you stay, it is sufficient for you to just mention the city that you live for example Petaling Jaya or PJ, Bangi, Kajang etc. No need to give details of your full address 😅😅. Sometimes Malaysians asked this because they wanted to know a little bit or roughly on your background. For example: if a respondent answered that they live in Mont Kiara (where usually most of elite people live), definitely the person who asked the question will know that there are possibilities that the respondent may come from elite social status, hence, certain common questions cannot be asked. Questions like duduk mana? (Where do you stay?), Dah makan? (Have you eaten?) etc are common questions in order for them to start a conversation. So it is sufficient to just anwer it in general. Hope you enjoy your stay in Malaysia 🥰

You are correct. If we exchange question like "abang berasal dari mana" we tend to put down what we are doing and spend half day telling the other party how good is our hometown.

We Malaysians should apologize for making you uncomfortable with such a question. in Malaysia that might not be a problem. but if it makes you feel uncomfortable, I think Malaysians can understand and will not ask questions like that again. Asking things like that does not mean wanting to disturb your privacy. It's just a form of our concern for our guests.
Nobody should apologise. It is the culture. Either you adapt it to be part of it or you dont. If you can adapt it, it will be better in the future. To be part of a community, people need to understand the culture better. It goes everywhere in the world.

As Malaysian im also receive so many offensive question from people, some question be like 1. Waa long time no see ah, why u getting fat recently 2. When will you get married? Your age quite older already 3. How much the salary you get per month?
I'm one of them who start a conversation with that question. Haha. Normally, someone with lack of communication skills will ask that 'template' questions, because our brain can only think of that question. There are stages of "Where do you stay". Say if I'm living in Ampang area, I definitely familiar with the neighborhood right. So, lets say if I met a stranger on a train, if I ask where do you stay, and if he or she answered Ampang, I will surely 1000% ask a follow up question, "aaa, which area/condo/taman" its because I can relate to where I'm staying, and at the same time, we try to find things we have in common. but if he answer, oh i'm from Seremban, then my question will only stop there because I'm not so familiar with that area. Then I'll come up with another 'generic' question like "what are you doing here/working here?". For someone that we always met on a daily basis, but not so close, the generic question that we'll ask "dah makan?" although I just met him at the care like 5 minutes ago. lol.
U need to take a break guys. It must have been hard to go from place to place doing the same thing over and over again. Loved ur content.. but I think ur popularity among the people of Malaysia is ur own downfall. Last time both of u came to Malaysia as this unknown couple going from place to place to enjoy all the wonderful food our country has to offer. Now.. being famous in the eyes of us Malaysian.. everywhere u go people will offer u free food. `where you stay` actually means which town,city or states..doesn't mean your actual address..it's some kind of opening friendly conversation ...just maybe they come from the same place as you are,which then they can elaborate more the conversation..

I think it is a bit of a culture shock anytime you move to a new country, sometimes it is something small that the locals don't even realize because we are used to it. No need to apologize, small matter! (This is also a very common Malaysian phrase 😁). But also something to keep in mind: In social media, we can't please everybody. Sometimes we can just smile and ignore certain comments. We can always agree to disagree. You don't owe anyone any explanations. Instead of putting the bar too high for yourselves, how about doing everyday things like going to the mall, restaurants, market, meeting people, friends etc? Personally, I love your channel because of your honest reactions to things in Malaysia and its people. You don't have to be travelling all over Malaysia to give us that content, you know. Even going to the local wet market, seeing how different things are with what you have in Japan would be great content, btw. We would love to see your reactions to normal everyday things too, and then educate us about how things are done back in your own country. Even a trip to the nearest pasar malam could be an interesting content if you go about it the right way. Either way, I'm praying for your success and don't worry too much about the Malaysian people, we don't actually take offense in every little thing, and those who did, they are just trolls and haters so ignore them. Be yourself. Don't change who you are. There will always be sour apples where ever you go. If you think their question is prying, you can tell them in a polite way but firm that you'd rather not answer that question. And if they get offended by that, then that's their problem. You can't make everyone happy.
Please guys you don't have to apologise. Sometimes we forget that non Malaysians are brought up differently from ours. So in fact we are the ones who should apologise to both of you by asking personal questions that make you uncomfortable. Actually your talking videos gives are interesting looking at things from your perspective. I think when people start asking whether you don't like Malaysia and that sort of things is because we are worried that foreigners like you, our beloved guests are offended by our words or actions.
Even us Malaysians, don't feel comfortable being asked personal questions. When asked where you stay, just tell them, Ohh somewhere around bla bla whatever area..don't have to be specific..because they also don't bother where exactly you stay. If they ask about your income...what i normally would say is "Yea, its enough for my daily needs. Or you can say, enough for the both of us"..something of that nature. Please continue your talking videos..something different for us to look forward to. I gained a lot of insights about Japanese opinions regarding their culture shock. Its also a good way for us to understand better about both of you. 👍👍👍
This is just my suggestion. Maybe you can do a collaboration with some Japanese expats who have lived in Malaysia for very long and do the talking video with them. Aya san from Aya Channel is a good candidate. Chaimaru channel has just given birth to a baby boy here in Malaysia...just to name another. There's Chongmage channel, Taka and Sho san. Sho is quite good in Malay even though both just arrived this year.

There is no need to be so serious. One person may be offended but a lot of people are not. I can see your humour and where you are coming from when Malaysian ask where do you stay. Cultural differences will always be there. If everyone is the same, the fun of travelling will not be there. You are not required to say only nice things about Malaysia. So your next skill is to know which question is ice breaker / to find a connection, and which question is kepochi, and the next level is to know how to politely "tepis" the kepochi questions. @@ichangrm but IChang and Jimmy, after you power up from "tepis" the kepochi uncles and aunties, you will need to master the "Boss Level Flexer", the most dangerous malaysian out there. The boss level flexer will trick you by asking a question to break the ice, but when you answer he will not make a connection but he will "flex". E.g. if he ask where you stay and you answer ampang, the flexer will say "You know how many Dato lives in Ampang? They all my friend. I also have house in Ampang but just to park my sports car". And if the question is where are you from and you say japan he will say "If I go holiday in japan I never eat lawson's chicken popcorn. I only eat wagyu". When you can "tepis" the "Boss Level Flexer" then your HP and Power Up is x 10! Haha

Have moments for yourselves to experience the various facets of everyday living without worrying about documenting them. Malaysians are generally warm and understanding, and we definitely understand your struggles and aspirations. Believe it or not, your videos have actually connected Malaysians even more. Perhaps in some future videos both of you might want to join photography clubs or videography clubs, or even cooking clubs, or some other social shared interest clubs, where they may boost your understanding of Malaysia and its people even further. I'm a private person myself. When i stayed abroad, i used not to response to the 'where are you staying' question but came back to Malaysia, it's a common question to ask. It'll lead to the warm conversations.

All questions you can answer it with jokes. Mostly they ask questions because they want to start the conversations and they are not serious. 😎
I love how you guys are so open to learning our cultural differences. And we Malaysians also need to open our heart to differences in other peples culture. Even different household will have different culture on how they were raised by their parents. So of course it will be a whole new world for you guys to adapt with our culture and custom. i think generally people should not simply give their address or even share the building where you live. But i think the intention behind the question 'where do you stay' is not to ask for your address. It's just to know which area so that people can recommend more food or any attractions around your area. Being a Malaysian myself i get that question alot, and i would just answer 'i stay near Puchong' (example)

You don't need to apologise at all! Even as a Malaysian, I feel a stranger asking me such a personal question is quite intrusive. What more if I was in the public eye. People forget that just because you always see them on TV, that you guys are friends and can ask such personal questions. UA-camrs are human too with private lives, let's all try to respect each other's personal space.

This is part and parcel of life being a UA-camr and you don’t need to apologize for your recent videos which are not offensive at all but were truthfully real and sincere thoughts . There bound to be small hearted and sensitive people everywhere. Take your time to relax and recover , at the same time reflect on your YouTubing journey and see how you would like to go from there and avoid pressuring yourself. I think you have reached a plateau vlogging about your food eating adventure and life is inviting you to embark on a totally new phase. Go with the flow.. even to start something new and different. Take one step at a time … we will support you. Btw.. I think Malaysians should also learn to respect foreigners’ way of doing things as long as it does not affect public order.

Hi ichang 👋🏻 this is something that I learnt from my previous training on interpersonal communication where my instructor had given me some examples based on Malaysian case awhile ago. When people asked you where do you stay, it is sufficient for you to just mention the city that you live for example Petaling Jaya or PJ, Bangi, Kajang etc. No need to give details of your full address 😅😅. Sometimes Malaysians asked this because they wanted to know a little bit or roughly on your background. For example: if a respondent answered that they live in Mont Kiara (where usually most of elite people live), definitely the person who asked the question will know that there are possibilities that the respondent may come from elite social status, hence, certain common questions cannot be asked. Questions like duduk mana? (Where do you stay?), Dah makan? (Have you eaten?) etc are common questions in order for them to start a conversation. So it is sufficient to just anwer it in general. Hope you enjoy your stay in Malaysia 🥰

You are correct. If we exchange question like "abang berasal dari mana" we tend to put down what we are doing and spend half day telling the other party how good is our hometown.

We Malaysians should apologize for making you uncomfortable with such a question. in Malaysia that might not be a problem. but if it makes you feel uncomfortable, I think Malaysians can understand and will not ask questions like that again. Asking things like that does not mean wanting to disturb your privacy. It's just a form of our concern for our guests.
Nobody should apologise. It is the culture. Either you adapt it to be part of it or you dont. If you can adapt it, it will be better in the future. To be part of a community, people need to understand the culture better. It goes everywhere in the world.

I'm one of them who start a conversation with that question. Haha. Normally, someone with lack of communication skills will ask that 'template' questions, because our brain can only think of that question. There are stages of "Where do you stay".
Say if I'm living in Ampang area, I definitely familiar with the neighborhood right. So, lets say if I met a stranger on a train, if I ask where do you stay, and if he or she answered Ampang, I will surely 1000% ask a follow up question, "aaa, which area/condo/taman" its because I can relate to where I'm staying, and at the same time, we try to find things we have in common. but if he answer, oh i'm from Seremban, then my question will only stop there because I'm not so familiar with that area. Then I'll come up with another 'generic' question like "what are you doing here/working here?". For someone that we always met on a daily basis, but not so close, the generic question that we'll ask "dah makan?" although I just met him at the care like 5 minutes ago. lol.
U need to take a break guys. It must have been hard to go from place to place doing the same thing over and over again. Loved ur content.. but I think ur popularity among the people of Malaysia is ur own downfall. Last time both of u came to Malaysia as this unknown couple going from place to place to enjoy all the wonderful food our country has to offer. Now.. being famous in the eyes of us Malaysian.. everywhere u go people will offer u free food. "Boss belanja"... u dont get to enjoy the real food but something that has been prepared specially for a famous UA-cam couple. Whether the question was meant to be an ice breaker or not, next time just answer it generally like, I'm residing in KL. You don't need to be so specific. If the person insists you elaborate further, then you gotta be careful and keep your distance. You have your rights to your privacy!😅👌
How much money you make is a bit too much. I get it, because it's not easy to get an answer to this question since not that many of us do meet someone making money from UA-cam, but eh, I really hate talking about money. Where you stay is more normal, but I don't like that either. I'll tell them which state I'm from and they want to know which town or city lol. But yes, like iChang said, it's not about right or wrong on this either.

`where you stay` actually means which town,city or states..doesn't mean your actual address..it's some kind of opening friendly conversation ...just maybe they come from the same place as you are,which then they can elaborate more the conversation..

I think it is a bit of a culture shock anytime you move to a new country, sometimes it is something small that the locals don't even realize because we are used to it. No need to apologize, small matter! (This is also a very common Malaysian phrase 😁).
But also something to keep in mind: In social media, we can't please everybody. Sometimes we can just smile and ignore certain comments. We can always agree to disagree. You don't owe anyone any explanations.
