Our Latin Thing (Nuestra Cosa) is a musical documentary revealing the exciting lifestyle of New York Latinos during the decade of the 1970s. The film captures the New York '70s salsa explosion in all its power and adrenaline. Directed by acclaimed filmmaker Leon Gast, highlights include performance by Cheo Feliciano at the top his game with an orchestra of superstars whose backup vocalists alone includes Héctor Lavoe, Ismael Miranda, Adalberto Santiago and Pete 'El Conde' Rodríguez. Gast takes also to the streets of the Spanish Harlem where the salsa phenomenon was born, as well as into the recording studio for a peek into the creative process, featuring producer/keyboardist Larry Harlow. Our Latin Thing (Nuestra Cosa) is remastered from original tapes.

Just for the record I’ve seen This film more times then any person on the planet, I distributed this film by renting theaters all over North America, South America, Central America and the Caribbean . I have to say after not seeing this film in over 30 years its held the test of time. It’s about time its available again. Thanks for spreading the word & the Music we made 50 years ago. Ralfi Pagan as they were listed in the credits but not shown and others you can hear it on the sound track but not the video. Is there some lost videos out there or to be released. Thanks much

50 años de esto: En 1972, invité a todos los amigos de mi edificio a ver esta pelicula (Tenia solo 10 años) en el cine Hollywood de las Fuerzas Armadas con Avenida Urdaneta. Todos me dijeron que no. Me fui igual. Cuando salió la primera escena, no lo podía creer, lo maravilloso de esa escena y un niño de casi mi edad recorriendo ese barrio feo como el mío en manhattan con esa música de fondo. Cuando llegue de vuelta al edificio les dije a todos mis amigos "de ahora en adelante, cuando quiera hacer algo, no espero por nadie, cuerda de pajuos".
Ver esta película más de 10 ves en lo largo de 40 años siempre recuerdo la cultura y la vida que se vivía en eso años. Saludos y que buenas épocas.
Me llamo la atencion tu comentario y me causo gracia lo que te sucedio, pero solo queria corregirte que realmente no fue en el 71 sino en el 72 cuando llego a Caracas la pelicula, que por cierto yo tambien la vi en su estreno en el cine Junin en el centro de la ciudad y tenia 13 años para ese entonces y tambien la fui a ver yo solo, lo que paso fue parte dell material del video fue grabado antes del concierto de la fania en el Cheetah y el disco si llego a Venezuela y sono en el año 71.. pero lo que mas me causo gracia fue que despues de leerlo y pensar en hacer mi comentario fue que me di cuenta que somos tocayos en nombre y apellidos segun tu nombre de cuenta. Yo,aunque no estuve en ese memorable espectáculo,tenía 11 años y vivo en Puerto Rico ,he escuchado todas esas canciones desde que salieron al público , todavía conservo los LP y ahora disfruto mucho ver el vídeo en el celular.Pura nostalgia de tiempos buenísimos e irrepetibles.

What memories .... as a first generation US born Puerto Rican American in a place where Black and white America were trying to figure out how to get along. We young New Yor Rcans were caught in the middle trying to find our own place and identity. This music and these musicians gave us " our own Latin thing" a sense of pride and our own identity. Thank god for this music and these musicians that will always have a special place in my heart.
I'm grateful to the genius the late Johnny Pacheco for bringing so many talented musicians together so we can enjoy our beautiful heritage 💕❤❤❤.

I remember them playing at the top of the abandon church on 13th street between 1st and 2nd ave, lower Manhattan, the block was cornered off, what a festive day! everyone was out dancing in the street, hanging out on the fire_escapes and enjoying the music, I was about 10 or 12 back then it's still vivid in my memory. What a joyful day. till this day I love Salsa.

I always thought it was in Manhattan and suspected it was somewhere around 17th street, but you have finally clarify something that I been asking myself since I was a kid. I was born in Ponce, PR and saw this movie there, but moved to New York when I was 17 in 1975. I remember seeing the Cheetah Club sign on 52nd st. I believe around 1976-77, but the club had already closed down. Went to dance at the Corso, Roseland, George Hotel in Brooklyn, Casino 14. Those were the days man.

In the late 1940s, when Pacheco was 11 years old, his family moved to New York City from his native Dominican Republic. He continued to hone his musical skills, learning to play the accordion, violin, saxophone, and clarinet. He attended the Juilliard School of Music to study percussion. Playing the flute, saxophone, and varied percussion, Pacheco performed with Charlie Palmieri's Latin Orchestra for several years before forming his own band in 1959. Experimentation was the focus of his new band, combining African music from Cuba, the Dominican Republic. and Port. Rich heritage in what became known as salsa. In 1960, he organized his first orchestra, "Pacheco y Su Charanga". The band signed with Alegre Records and their first album "Johnny Pacheco y Su Charanga" sold more than 100,000 copies in the first year. From then until the end of 1963, Pacheco introduced a new dance fashion called "Pachanga". He became an internationally renowned star and toured extensively throughout the United States, Europe, Asia, and Latin America. Brings back so many memories... I was in tears at the beginning when the children were all congregated together in harmony playing music with whatever resources they had in their possession. I was too in my elementary state at that time. My grandmother lived on 111th st where the mobil gas station used to be. We would cross over to the east side to buy records. I remember seeing so many block parties filled with salsa. It was a time that I'm so grateful to God that I grew up in that culture.. 4 all the fania members that are no longer with us, here's to you! LA VIVA ! DAMN .. I CRYING LIKE CRAZY!

Watching this for the first time as a result of Johnny Pacheco's passing. I grew up in Franklin Plaza in East Harlem in the 1970's and the streets looked exactly like that! Went to the Fania All Stars Madison Square Garden concert when I was about 13 years old as we grew up with Joe Bataan's daughters....wow brings back memories. On 115th Street off Lex on Sat or Sun (pre-Covid) old timers gather to listen to salsa and dance. Its great! (Hey I'm an old timer now!!). I can say I was at the Corso, Cheetah and Christophers; back in the day!

A principios de la década de 1960, Johnny Pacheco estaba en lo alto de la música latina basada en Cuba. Nacido en República Dominicana y criado en Nueva York, Pacheco fue un multiinstrumentista entrenado en Juilliard que encontró el éxito tocando y grabando con su orquesta Pacheco y Su Charanga. En la escena, conoció al policía italiano-estadounidense convertido en abogado Jerry Masucci, un apasionado fanático del sonido latino de Nueva York. Cuando el matrimonio de Pacheco se vino abajo en 1962, recurrió a Masucci para manejar el divorcio. Mientras una unión se disolvía, nació otra: un sello de música latina llamado Fania Records. Los dos pusieron $ 5,000 en su empresa e inicialmente vendieron álbumes de los maleteros de sus autos en el Harlem español. El sello, en poco tiempo, estableció el género musical que se conocería como salsa, una colisión del SON tradicional cubano / merengue dominicano ,bomba y plena boricua y los ritmos panlatinos del caribe antillas, como el jazz afroamericano y el funk.

This film is "ICONIC" of the FANIA ALL STARS, in 1971, I was 7 years old, in my country the PAN AMERICAN GAMES were being celebrated, this film shows how SALSA was cooking long before and very talented musicians were screened in that orchestra, that is why each one followed their path and this unprecedented MUSICAL GENRE became international, now what had always caused me curiosity is the musical quality of PUERTO RICANS, CUBANS, DOMINICANS AND NEW YORKERS, they were born with that gift despite their beginnings with economic hardships in most cases, this film is a MUSICAL LEGACY OF SALSA

Phidias Dannilo Escalona es el responsable y precursor de todo lo que luego vino. Honor y gloria a quien lo merece. También a Federico Bentacourt, quien graba la primera producción discográfica llamada Salsa, donde se entiende y se clasifica a nuestros ritmos caribeños y latinos, como salsa. Honor y gloria a Cuba por tan inmenso legado musical que ha dejado en el planeta. Honor y gloria a los latinos y latinas que gozan y se conmueven con el sentimiento del barrio.

The very first FANIA album I heard. I've been a fan ever since. Descarga Fania is my favorite song. I remember when I first heard it, I was living in The Bronx in New York City. My roommate was a beautiful Puerto Rican Brother and he played this album religiously. Descarga Fania came on and I was completely mesmerized. We lived on the 34th floor of an apartment building. The Moon was Full that night and the magic of FANIA just filled my soul. Been a die hard fan ever since. Thank you, FANIA for such amazing memories and for the gift of music. Salsa for life. Muchas otras leyendas del género pueden remontar sus carreras a encuentros con el fundador de Alegre Records, Al Santiago, un empresario gregario y locuaz cuya energía desbordante era evidente incluso a una edad temprana. El hombre que inició y descubrió a Johhny Pacheco cuando éste tenía 18 años. Nacido y criado en Nueva York de padres puertorriqueños, Santiago tocaba el piano de niño, pero lo dejó para dedicarse al saxofón. ("Me disgustaba tanto el piano que solía tocar 'El vals del minuto' en 30 segundos para poder salir a jugar al softball", dijo una vez). Empezó a tocar en una banda en la que estaban su padre y su tío, y cuando éste lo dejó, Santiago tomó el relevo, dirigiendo toda la orquesta. Aunque apenas tenía 18 años, Santiago tenía oído para los nuevos talentos; cambiaba a los más viejos por músicos más nuevos hasta que, muy pronto, su padre era el único miembro de la banda. Sin embargo, la actuación no era el destino de Santiago. Después de un fatídico roce con el prodigioso trompetista Buck Clayton en una boda, Santiago se dio cuenta de las limitaciones a las que se enfrentaría como músico, recordando: "Sé que no soy un instrumentista excepcional, y la única forma de ganar dinero es ser un intérprete/líder superestrella, no un músico secundario". uDiscover Music Store - Jazz PUBLICIDAD Santiago tomó un camino diferente, pidiendo prestados 1.800 dólares a su familia y abriendo una tienda de discos llamada Casa Latina del Bronx en 1951, todo ello mientras iba a la universidad y estudiaba empresariales. Una demolición local obligó a cerrar brevemente Casa Latina del Bronx, pero Santiago acabó por depositar una fianza en otra tienda vacía en el Bronx, esta vez con el nombre de Casalegre Record Store. En noviembre de 1955 dio la bienvenida a los clientes y pronto la tienda se convirtió en un bullicioso centro de música latina. Sin embargo, eso era sólo el comienzo de algo más grande que Santiago tenía en mente. En 1956, él y el empresario del sector de la confección Ben Perlman incursionaron en la grabación de música con el lanzamiento de Alegre Recording Corp, que aprovechó las habilidades de Santiago como creador de gustos y productor, así como la popularidad de la tienda que había cultivado. Después de años de grabar a personas que se convertirían en grandes estrellas (Pacheco, Eddie y Charlie Palmieri, Francisco "Kako" Bastar, entre otros), Alegre Records se vendió a Branston Music en 1966. Santiago siguió involucrado en la producción y luego, en 1975, Alegre fue comprada por Fania, su principal competidor. El otro cofundador de Fania, Jerry Masucci, contrató a Santiago para varias sesiones de producción, pero algunos fans creen incluso ahora que Masucci no promocionó a los artistas de la lista de Alegre tanto como merecían. Alegre se transformó y cambió durante casi dos décadas. Tanto la tienda como el sello son recordados hoy con cariño como "La casa que Al construyó", y pocas cosas pueden empañar una discografía tan formidable. Los inmortales de la salsa que extraordinarios pura cabilla
Hoy se cumplen 50 años del concierto en el Cheetah, en pleno Broadway Manhattan NY, que marco el antes y despues de lo que todos conocemos como SALSA! Se grabo alli ese 26 de agosto de1971 lo que marcaria la vida de muchos jovenes, alli me incluyo YO, la pelicula OUR LATIN THING! Todos salimos corriendo a ver esa Pelicula en el cine en 1972 y en los dias siguientes a la tienda de discos local a comprar los albumes del concierto FANIA ALL STARS Live at Cheetah Volumen 1 y 2. Demas esta decir que vi la pelicula 2 veces (el boleto costaba en aquella epoca $2 en el teatro/cine Oliver de Arecibo Puerto Rico. Soy amante de la SALSA desde ese dia. Aunque no estuve presente en NY, solo tenia 12 años, me transportaba a aquel lugar cada vez que escuchaba los 2 albumes que los ponia back-to-back para revivir aquella experiencia/noche en el viejo stereo marca Grundig en la sala de la casa de mi mama. Perdonen la letania...que viva la SALSA!

Que pena yo llegue aquí en el 83 pero venía de un país que no estaba en. Nada, y era muy tímido , peo siempre supe que este ambiente de los boricuas y algunos cubanos era lo mío , pero a finales de los 90’la salsa dura ya estaba desapareciendo y no vivi en New York , si nos en Miami , era otra influencia, los que si salieron a defender la salsa romántica fueron los boricuas y los colombianos con niche y eso duró hasta el 2000 de ahí no hay naaa

El dominicano Johnny Pacheco pasó su juventud tocando el acordeón y el tambor dominicano de dos parches conocido como "Tambora", ambos elementos básicos del merengue, la música nacional de su tierra natal. Pero pronto se obsesionaría con la música cubana, ya que su padre, clarinetista, dirigía una orquesta que en ocasiones tocaba el elegante danzón cubano. Un estilo de música que originalmente había sido interpretado por bandas de música, en la década de 1930 se tocaba en grupos con violines y flauta conocidos como charangas. Sus héroes de infancia fueron las charangas de Antonio Arcaño y Sus Maravillas y la Orquesta Ideal. En el estilo de conjunto basado en la trompeta que tocaba el son (la raíz de la canción popular de la salsa) estaban Arsenio Rodríguez, Chapotin y Sus Estrellas y La Sonora Matancera, que todos escuchaban en la radio de onda corta. En una entrevista realizada por David Carp y Bruce Polin para el Boletín Descarga en “A menudo tenían el clarinete en lugar de la flauta como protagonista”, dijo. “Mi padre solía tocar el papel principal porque tocaba el clarinete”. Pacheco pronto dominaría la batería completa de percusión cubana, así como la batería, el saxofón alto, el clarinete, el violín y el instrumento que se convirtió en su tarjeta de presentación, la flauta. The band signed with Alegre Records and their first album "Johnny Pacheco y Su Charanga" sold more than 100,000 copies in the first year. From then until the end of 1963, Pacheco introduced a new dance fashion called "Pachanga". He became an internationally renowned star and toured extensively throughout the United States, Europe, Asia, and Latin America. Una canción puede ser buena por sí misma, pero no llegará muy lejos sin un arreglo y una orquestación adecuados. Siguiendo la tradición de René Hernández, Ray Santos y Tito Puente, Valentín fue el artífice del movimiento cultural desarrollado en las calles del barrio latino y del Bronx por la diáspora de músicos de Puerto Rico, Cuba y la República Dominicana durante los años 50 y 60. Bobby es uno de los pilares que sostienen el sello Fania, fundado en 1964 por el abogado italoamericano Jerry Masucci. Creador, junto a Johnny Pacheco y Larry Harlow, de algunos de los primeros discos de la compañía, Valentín no tardó en convencer a Masucci de sus credenciales como arreglista y orquestador. Bobby capitalizó todos esos elementos en sus grabaciones de conciertos con la Fania All Stars en el Cheetah y en el Yankee Stadium, y en el repertorio de los discos de Justo Betancourt, Ismael Quintana, Cheo Feliciano y más artistas del sello. Como director de orquesta, su carrera ha sido igualmente impresionante. Con el lanzamiento de Evolution en 2008, El Rey Del Bajo demostró que todavía puede ofrecer arreglos originales e innovadores después de más de cuatro décadas como director de orquesta. Al igual que los temas de esta colección que recopila sus mayores éxitos de la Fania, que han conservado una frescura armónica y conceptual, a pesar de haber sido grabados hace más de tres décadas. Una oportunidad para apreciar la excelencia de su trabajo como director de banda y arreglista desde los días en que tocaba la trompeta y su transición al bajo eléctrico, esta colección no estaría completa sin el éxito "Soy Boricua". Fue escrita por Roberto Angleró, uno de los compositores que escribió canciones a su medida. La creatividad y la inteligencia de Angleró van más allá de los temas de reafirmación de la identidad nacional trascendiendo los versos interpretados brillantemente por Marvin Santiago, y tocando la fibra más profunda de la nostalgia por la patria querida en otras canciones sobre el orgullo puertorriqueño como "Aquí No Me Quedo." Un artista tan orgulloso de sus raíces como Valentín no podía ignorar una composición como "Muero En Tu Tierra" de Antonio R. Vidal, que expresa la simpatía por su tierra puertorriqueña. En 1971, utilizó un tono más enérgico, hablando contra los invasores en "Vete Pa'Llá", un tema de su autoría que Marvin interpretó en el LP Rompecabezas. Aunque temas como "El Mensajero" y "Huracán" representan un merecido homenaje póstumo a la memoria de los cantaores Marcelino "Junior" Morales y Frankie Hernández, este disco incluye sobre todo aquellos cortes que se hicieron famosos por la voz de Marvin, el inolvidable Sonero del Pueblo, que impone su dominio del montuno con versos ricos en rima y melodía como "Papel de Payaso" y "Pirata de la Mar" de Tite Curet Alonso, otro de los compositores favoritos de Valentín. La ideología social del director de orquesta está representada en "Pobre Soy". Su lado más romántico brilla en los boleros "Piénsalo Bien" y "Beso Borracho" una melodía de Esteban Taronji que captura la brillante grandeza de antaño.

Lo que vi además de los músicos maestros en pleno florecimiento con un ritmo que nos identificaba era la pobreza y marginalidad que vivian los negros y latinos en esa epoca por lo menos en new york de donde son las imágenes,pero aun asi este ritmo alegre y festivo nació en medió de la desigualdad y el abandono!

no see ami se me arrugo el corazon volver ver esta pelicula ,despues de verla hace mas de 4 decadas .ver a todos esos jovenes para la epoca ya muchos de ellos que se marcharon al cielo .....
No había visto este video y al verlo hay sentimientos distintos,alegría por la música que produjeron y tristes por los que ya no están pero su legado queda. Estos salseros nos cambiaron la vida. Que viva la salsa,que viva la fania que viva Héctor,cheo,Larry,Pacheco, Ismael,willy,Tito,Celia y todos los que nos hicieron bailar con las estrellas de fania. Bendiciones.
