I LOVE your videos ! In the process of watching them all. Can you tell me if training two 4 month old kittens we got three days ago will be too hard since there are two?
I teach my cat Lumi for the same amount of time, but I am in a wheelchair on a daily basis, and when I go out in my wheelchair Lumi stays on my shoulder.
I have a cat that started doing this on her own. I can’t sit down or pick her up without her going for my shoulders. Training her NOT to do this is the trick! 😹 Once, I even laid down on my couch to see if she would prefer the soft cushions over my narrow shoulders. Not only did she not get off, she made herself more comfortable and fell asleep! 😂
This is amazing! I was dreaming of a shoulder cat but it did not happen naturally, so I had to teach her :) this video is probably for the unlucky one :p
Dear Albert and Mia, thank you for these very helpful videos. We have a 5 y/o indoor Cat and started just recently with the clicker training and fingers pointing. In just a few weeks, she understands what we want completely. I for one had no expectations going in to this but we are so happy with the progress. Thanks a lot 💕
I started this training last night. My poor girl would either crane her neck way over my shoulder to eat or if I moved the bowl too far she would jump down. I finally got her to put her paws on my shoulder by laying face down on the floor and draping a mat she's already trained to sit on, on my back. Sometimes I'm glad no one's watching me train. Today she would eat with her paws on my shoulder from a chair as long as I put the mat on my shoulder. Should go more smoothly from here, she's a quick learner once she understands what you want. Thanks for the tutorial!
My kitten was a shoulder kitty the day I adopted him! When I got him he could sit fully on one side now he has gotten so big he lays all the way across. I call him my little parrot 🦜
My cat also naturally sat on my shoulders, but that was only when i took her downstairs and she was terrified and she had her claws firmly in my skin 🙃
Mine too, my new kitten Neo jumped upon my shoulder when I went to adopt him from my good friends, my question is, how do I stop Neo, my new kitten from climbing my legs as if they were tree trunks? Many people like jeans with holes in, but I don't :)) Neo likes to sit on my shoulder while I work at my standing desk. He needs training, so I am glad I found this awesome video!
Our bengal cat loved sitting on my shoulders since he was a puppy and I didn't have to train him. Now this has became a problem though! 😂 He's used to walking on a leash, so we often meet strangers that stop us to have a chat. It happened twice that he jumped on the shoulders of strangers when in a stressful situation, like for instance when too many people approached him or a loud car was passing by. This actually scared me because I don't know what trouble he could cause next.
Hey, makes sense.. Mia also has learned to use the shoulder as her escape route / safe place. I try to always be that shoulder available but it's true that might be a probelm one day. When on leash, it should be easy to prevent that from happening.... What was exactly the situation?
When I lived in LA there was a stray near me that loved to sit on my shoulders whenever she saw me and would sit and read books with me, now I’ve had a cat of my own and would love to teach him how to sit on my shoulders too, thanks for the excellent videos I can’t wait to teach him these tricks
I taught my fur baby through repetition by putting her on my shoulders every time i carried her, the problem is now she prefers to climb up onto my shoulders every time I only want to normal carry her lol. But she also knows when I want her off, every time I lean towards the table or a counter, or I crouch down she gets off no problem
You are so cool with your cat it’s like he or she is your spirit animal. I love your content it’s so inspiring to me. My family don’t believe I can train my cat but I will prove them wrong! Thanks and keep up the amazing content😃👍
My cat sits on my shoulders. I can walk him for hours. The only thing is he gets a-lot of attention and then people try to ask questions and that is when he gets a bit skittish and loud. I want to make him feel comfortable when he's been on my shoulders for awhile and there is new attention paid to him - attention that might not speak "cat."
Now that targetting is going well we are going to build up to floor to shoulder jumps! Bonsai (my Bengal) is very comfortable on my shoulders already as he discovered when we first got him a few weeks ago that it was a good perch to get a ride around the house on. Today I had him climb his cat tree (about shoulder hight) and get on my shoulders from there using finger targetting. The only thing different is he prefers to stand on my shoulder, not lay over it like Mia, so he's a bit less stable.
Mia likes standing as well. Try to lower the food below your shoulder, that should make the trick. Also, when he needs more stability, he'll get low and claw you, don't worry! :)
My hayley is only 6 weeks old and I adopted her 2 days ago. On our first day I trained her to poo and pee on a litter box and she learned it already that day. I hope she's fast learner too like mia. I really want to train her and go everywhere with me.
Good luck! I started training Mia when she was 12weeks old. I started with some easy tricks like come when called and finger targetting and got to more complex tricks once she was comfortable with those. You can find more about it in this video: ua-cam.com/video/YxxCqtJ93zU/v-deo.html
Thanks for all the great videos! I'm on the waitlist for an amazing Bengal breeder and your videos are really helping with tips on training our future kitty for outdoor adventures :)
Thank you so much! I've been doing something similar with my cat. He has always been clingy and I've never seen any reason to seperate myself from him so I figured I might as well prepare him to travel around with me. He is already really good and comfortable with being on my shoulder but my main problem was getting him to jump up there on his own. (I typically have to pick him up lol.) I started with squatting with my back to a wall, and he would jump up there. Then slowly inching taller and taller but now he will just launch himself at me and expect me to automatically catch him- I can't walk past my sofa without having to defend myself from a flying feline! I'll try and follow your steps a bit and see how it goes! (I also have my cat trained to a specific cl8cking noise that I used to train my horses instead of a clicker so if you can't afford one then it's fine!)
@@OutdoorBengal my wants to go out bt she's nt trained and freaks out at times..bt these vids r really helpful..it's diff to find ppl who think it's sane to train cats😂
My ragdoll kitten is bigger than Mia even now, but I'm still willing to teach her this trick. We don't use clicker as it is not very handy for us, but I'm pretty sure we'll succeed nevertheless. Will start today with a bit of malt paste on my finger. Thank you for your tips!
My cat giraffe did it out of itself when he was still a kitten, I have no idea why, but he seems to be a genetic thing. while working on a farm he came up to me, clinbing on houlder and hanging out there for a while. After a couple of weeks I asked and took him home
My Dex climbed up the first day I brought him home. He’s getting good with his balance. He was 5 wks when I brought him home now 9 wks. I will do the meal he will love that. He gets to keep me with him and some food. Yes I understand the nails. He stopped going to the middle of my back and now balances himself. We cut potatoes today. He was up there the whole time. Not afraid of water so that’s cool. Do you think some breeds are better than others. He’s half Siamese half mystery. But he loves his momma.
So glad I came I came across your channel! I was looking for tips and tricks to teach my tabby and our new Toyger kitten. Love your content and I have just subscribed! I’m very excited to try these tricks and looking forward to seeing more of your videos!

Your videos are awesome !! I've managed to train my adult rescue cat to put her two front paws on my shoulder (the first step you show) ! Yay ! Do you have a suggestion for a cat who uses her claw to try and get the treat closer to her ? My fingers are getting injured ! 😅🙈
To teach them not to claw (in this or any trick) is to use a spoon (so you don't get hurt in the process). Whenever the move their murder mittens, they don't get rewarded, if they approach with the head, they can eat. :)
Aww you and your cat are so cute 😊 and I love how you sound as if you saw Meow in the way you say Mia. Love your videos... I got a Calibby 2 year old in January who I've called Malibu (Raven) who was previously feral, but I feel she needs more training and I'm really struggling to get her to stop doing things she shouldn't such as the cooker, kitchen work surface and my art and craft table etc. I'm fearful of concluding she's best off somewhere else 😢. If you could help then that would be great
Albert and Mia I was wondering, what if my cat refuses even when I offer food, treats, and sometimes both though i have charged my clicker and she understands finger targeting? She is a 1 year old former outdoor cat, who is abit skiddish, only because we got her 3-4 weeks ago. If I could have a hand, that would bw awsome!
I feed her raw treats, my cat Mia likes freezed dried chicken a lot: amzn.to/3FviIYa Try reading this article, I cover the topic in depth! www.outdoorbengal.com/blogs/clicker-training-cats/my-cat-doesnt-like-treats-train-a-cat-thats-not-food-motivated
Thank you for another great video Albert! For me, the biggest challenge is to make my cat actually stay on my shoulders! She is a very energetic Abyssinian that jumps on everyone’s shoulders all the time… even on visitors LOL… but she jumps off in about 10 sec… only to jump on again few min later. I take her for a walk on my shoulder and she tries to get off any time she sees a bird or a squirrel. Any tips on how to make her stay put?
One of my kitties LOVES to jump on my shoulders. Only thing is I’m not a big build 😂 my shoulders aren’t really big or wide so he grips with his claws to not slide and I have so many scratches hahaha!
🎶....Shoulder cat, shoulder cat,....🎶... does whatever a shoulder cat does...🎶..can he shoulder, like a cat..🎶....yes he can, cause he's a shoulder caaaaat.......🎶
@@OutdoorBengal I would always put her on my shoulder when she was a kitten and now its just what she does especially if she wants to go outside or something haha. She would try to climb up my legs when she was little and I encouraged it rather than pushing her away. I just wore thicker pants so I wouldn't get stabbed haha.
Clearly I have to go back to the last step of here targeting. My cat was very motivated for the treat, but was trying every avenue except putting his paw on my shoulder. 😢
I enjoy all of your videos and they were such a big help when Ripple was a kitten - this shoulder one has become more challenging as I can tell Ripple is not confident standing on my knee or my shoulders (i'm not that big) now that he is 13-14lbs - he travels well on my husbands shoulders but doesn't feel confident with me - any added suggestions?
I love your videos, just got my first bengal, and have been following your tips, she's very smart and learning so fast, but I have a question: should I click when she jumps on my shoulder, or just when she touches my finger? I'm guessing the first, but I wanted to be sure I'm rewarding her for the right thing

She is a 1 year old former outdoor cat, who is abit skiddish, only because we got her 3-4 weeks ago. If I could have a hand, that would bw awsome!
I feed her raw treats, my cat Mia likes freezed dried chicken a lot: amzn.to/3FviIYa

Alright! Thank you!
Good film!!My cat can do this trick too.
I enjoy you and Mia. Prep classes until I rescue a kitten
Wow 0 dislikes it must work thank you
Haha didn’t notice! That’s so cool ❤️ let me know if it doesn’t, happy to help you figure it out ☺️
One of my kitties LOVES to jump on my shoulders. Only thing is I’m not a big build 😂 my shoulders aren’t really big or wide so he grips with his claws to not slide and I have so many scratches hahaha!
You are not alone! Something that works for me is a backpack or a hoodie!
🎶....Shoulder cat, shoulder cat,....🎶... does whatever a shoulder cat does...🎶..can he shoulder, like a cat..🎶....yes he can, cause he's a shoulder caaaaat.......🎶
hahaha shoulder cat, shoulder cat...! Love it!
The amazing shoulder cat
Me and my old cat Luna started doing this by accident but i want my new ones to do this!
ABSOLUTELY! It´s such a fun trick to teach!
Luv mia from India ❤️❤️❤️
I don’t have a cat so I’m not sure why I’m watching this but Here I am
Hahaha you’ll end up with a cat😝
I will try this trick
Let me know how it goes!
Woooowwww!
Thal you so much for this Video!
I can hardly keep little Yinny Pie off my shoulder haha.
That's awesome! Was this an adquired behavior or she was doing her on her own?
@@OutdoorBengal I would always put her on my shoulder when she was a kitten and now its just what she does especially if she wants to go outside or something haha. She would try to climb up my legs when she was little and I encouraged it rather than pushing her away. I just wore thicker pants so I wouldn't get stabbed haha.
thank you!
You're welcome!
Awesome
I last had one in 2015.
Clearly I have to go back to the last step of here targeting. My cat was very motivated for the treat, but was trying every avenue except putting his paw on my shoulder. 😢
Is it best to focus on one trick at a time during training sessions?
Definitely, focusing at one trick at a time help your cat focus on the trick better!
