I genuinely thought something like this wasn't going to be feasible until quantum computation was more mainstream. The fact that they can run these algorithms now on current tech just makes me salivate for what's coming, and soon... for real, people aren't ready for what's coming and how much things with change, even in the next 5 years. What a time to be alive
Same actually, I always assumed there’s a certain limit on the current hardware paradigm, no matter how much raw computational power we throw at it. I can only imagine what Quantum + AI will usher into existence..
BOINC also has these projects for folding proteins: Rosetta and GPU Grid. AI and distributed computing are really the technologies that will bring the next steps in science. That's why we (Cnergy) as a young start-up are building databoilers, that will bring distributed computing and AI to your home in an environmentally and cheap way.
I quit cell biology years ago when I realized AI could do it more easily. Guess what, hehe. Yes, it is hard to overstate this amazing advancement. Terraforming is the ultimate goal.
That depends very critically upon *who gets it.* Shall we put this AI at the disposal of Vladimir Putin? Of Donald Trump? Martin Shkreli? Xi Jinping? Gurbanguly Berdymukhammedov?
Glad I stumbled across your channel. You hit on exactly what I was hinting at in my Covid vaccine video. The future will come at us exponentially due to the advent of AI. It will be hard for our psyche to wrap our minds around it now and in the future. Great video. Liked and subscribed!
Gaming the algorithm is a slippery slope... of the trend catches on, it will have significant unintended consequences that would be for the better to avoid.
First I need to address how much I appreciate discovering a UA-cam Channel where you don't need an obnoxious 30second animated intro, and spend 20 minutes struggling to summarize your thoughts while going off on irrelevant tangents. You are very well spoken, articulate, informative and easy to follow, all summarized in a 5 minute video! You deserve way more Subs!
Nice coverage.. you are one of few that do not have an annoying voice... hope you will do more frequent video's... especially about future stuff -- for now, welcome into my tiny bubble :-)
This is a tremendous accomplishment of historic proportions. The recent progress in biological and materials sciences is astonishing. It will make it possible for tremendous positive changes, solving urgent problems for humanity, the health and sustainability of our planet and all her life forms.
To be honest, with enough computing power, this was just a matter of time and refinement. Thanks gamers for pouring billions into the gpu industry and making processing power dirt cheap!
The game of Go and protein folding are not readily solved by brute force. You do need massive compute power to run most advanced Ai models BUT it is not enough. The algorithms and the feedback learning loops are the real breakthroughs and the developers shod be recognised for their insights to make it possible

AWESOMENESS !! Medicine could LEAP forward !
@Norm T Good point. It seems to me that custom gene therapies and even DNA repair (CRISPR) can be now done on specific individuals for specific cases. Such custom gene therapy would require a team of top experts and a multimillion dollar facility. But when a person is a multi millionaire on their deathbed, money is no object. Just keep it all VERY quiet and the research will be funded...

AI is so inspiring. It's funny to think it exists as early as it does, in some part because of gamers, which have created a demand for higher and higher computing power. To get AIs, we needed the best tech, the best softwares, inspiration from nature and how your brain work, the emulation made possible by internet, linking so many minds together, and the context allowing a research that for a long time didn't produce much results. Now, we're breaking milestones every year or multiple times a year, and it seems to be getting exponentially faster. What a time to be alive !
