So this is one example of how you can use this sword not as a cutting but also a shield because in Japanese history their is no shield, a sword is used as sword as well. So let's just explore some basic blocks If you will from some basic cuts. Here is first from a downward strike which is coming in. I'm just gonna catch it at the Suba, okay and then I am gonna parry around okay and then come in for an attack. One more time. So as he comes in it's important to catch his blade and then parry it around, okay and then I can attack. Okay. That's just one simple exercise of a basic block from a downward strike. - Ігри
very unpractical and not realistic move
This is a terrible example... It is a katana technique but this shouldn't be considered a basic block. Catching with the Tsuba and parrying is pretty advanced. Also it's highly situational. Bad situation, you lose your hand.
yeah this guy is a "ninjutsu" guy. Their understanding of japanese martial arts is usually pretty weak.
To me it also comes across as a desperation move, not something you'd call you bread and butter in a fight.
madhatten00 agreed the first block I learned for an and overhead strike was a over the head block with the back of the blade to avoid damaging the cutting edge
*catches blade after 5,000th try* *realizes I have just opened up several different ways for my opponent to finish me off* *dislikes video before dying*
I've seen kids play with sticks using superior techniques
No shields in Japan?
And the samurai always went to battle only using a katana.
And ninjas can walk on water.
And a japanese blade can cut through everything without the slightest effort.
Also the katana is waaaay lighter than european swords. Because back in medieval Europe people made their swords out of lead.
He propably watched to many anime and hollywood movies.
Anime got it better than he does. MAry the Virgin witch even more so
The Real Carl XII
They don't use shields... Shields are a western concept... Simple research goes a long way.
They use a shield-like objects but they were more for concealing from arrows. Sort of a block and move to get closer, rather then used for blocking during battle.
MrFusionFunTime they used shields verry later. Like when using gunpowder weapon, they use a stand on the shields, and hide behind them
@@LilyEmbargo the Japanese used shields but no European-type shields the Japanese used stationary shields for archers. and also the shoulder straps on the samurai armor were a form of arrow shield
Haha, I love reading the comments on these
The title of this video should be. How to lose your hand in a sword fight.
oh dear.
An important element to the block is that the enemy purposely moves his katana away and lets you attack him
Catching your opponent's blade with a tsuba is the stupidest thing you can do. Do you WANT to lose your hand?
You can see the guy doesn't know how to use his sword from his grip.
lol "catch" with the tsuba...that might work with a european sword which has a bigger guard, but doing this with a samurai sword, there is a great chance you'll die or at least lose your arm
Most likely one of them is dieing so yea you use any tricks u can. Not like they gonna go home after the fight and do it again next week
What a disgrace to the bujinkan
At 0:55. after Oliver leaves his opponent's blade, why would the opponent kindly move his sword away to the right? What advantage would the opponent have for moving away instead of cutting upwards?
This guy is more fun to watch than Mr. Bean
not bad for what's clearly the first time he's picked up a sword
When you block a sword blow with the katana. Is the blade (sharpened part) of the blocked sword not damaged?
What the hell are you doing?
I watched a documentary which says Qi Jiguang (a general during Ming Dynasty) eliminated Japanese pirates using a special long weapon sharped from bamboo called langxian with dense branches. So the pirates had to chop them off first with their katana sabers. This moment they will be surrounded by Qi's troops with spears , sabers ,etc..
google "Chinese Martial Arts 2 Miracle Weapons part 2" start from 13:00
Therer is a movie God of War by Vincent Zhao about this.
i guess the defender could catch the opponent's katana with his tsuba, then angle his katana to the left, push away, and since he would be on top, just slash to his opponents neck.
Apparently he has super human speed if he actually pulls that off in a real sword fight. Its hilarious how he moves so much while the opponent stays in place
my thoughts he was like switching grips moving to the other side and all I was like, I would at least punch you xD
The Tsuba is definitely not made to "catch a sword"...
the first "Parrying arround" looks so badly improvised, I don't know if he forgot what to do and just went along with it, or he is serious about it...
This is impractical and a desperate move and definitely not a basic block
high lander is more usefull than this.
Why not just place the sword on the shoulder and move in for a stab after the parry? It seems safer than moving the sword over the opponent's sword and then coming for a strike.
The Japanese had shields. The tsuba will not effectively block a strike. I dare you to try these "techniques" against an 8th Dan kendo master. I would settle for an assistant who tries to fight back in the demonstration.
I beat my friends in stick fight bit why does it always hurt my hand when I block there attacks.
若セ沿0_ashura 😂😂😂🤣🤣🤣
What if I didn't catch his hit with this small part???... I can tell you.. My are will be two separated parts..
Even people that never touched a katana teaches better than this
The tsuba was made as sstrong as the blade back in the day. Some still are. However this form of blocking and fighting back is too risky for inexperianced or beginner swordsman.
im sorry but the first move seems EXTREAMLY impractical. not only are you taking a risk of it missing the tsuba but if you had no tsuba as many blades do you can say goodbye to your fingers. a netter way yourl just be an over head horizontal block followed by a strait kick to the abdomen. may not kill him but itll give you time to regain composure and is a hell of alot less risky.
I'm sure the other guy will just wait with his sword down while I take several steps around him to grab his sword arm.
Step one: sell your pot-metal stick and buy a saber like a man
YEAH, First one I AM so proud of my self Lol Sword Fighting
And it works in the modern days? I mean with bullets?
Why aren't you using bokken swords?
Now Let's See The Asian Fight Back
Maybe not the best example of a block... but just as my other fellow commentators I know more than you but do nothing to validate my claims. keep on training
Bullet will block any sword.
To be fair we just found out about Japanese shields just last year so that is ok. But not this dude.
Very realistic. Too many haters here.
O_o I don't know but that's look invented and fake.
Nonono 1.) See a guy with a katana running towards eu 2.) Cut him down before he did .
@westside0711 machete fighting is getting popular
Thanks! I just bought myself a katana, I always dreamed of being a Samurai as a kid, with a little practice and these videos I will be able to clash with the best of the best!
This vid is absolute BS. Catching the blade is ok, but the massive parry motion is just unbelivable, you could have lost your legs there.
what if i bring a gun?
SEVERAL
STEPS
Or "how to die trying to block with a katana | Sword Fighting".
Blocking with the hilt, while risky, is an actual way to block a sword strike. It is unwise, and is mostly used as a last resort, but it still is practical and is practiced.
+ChakraX2 Hilt yes. Tsuba uhhh maybe not so much
This is nothing like kendo or iaido
The Asian guy just looks like OH SHI- the whole time
Zoidberg: Your movie is horrible and you should feel horrible.
Lmao they just gonna sit there and let u control their sword
If eu are fast enough that is .
You don't block with a katana, it's thin metal could break by a heavy blow or just bend back a lot. Catching a katana with a Tsuba is very dangerous and is quite a unorthodox method as well as very situational. Never block with a katana because it's wasn't built that way, if you do block with a katana prepare for your blade to mess up or you're just lucky.
this is what I heard (and dont quote me on this but) that you are supposed to use the backside not the blade to deflect attacks
alex Avery Mate you're suppose tp parry with the flat of the blade if a kitana can't take that then it's even more proof of how usless they are seeing as pretty much any other sword can parry and if you look into hema you see how many times parrying was used.
This dude is no expert. This is easily noticed by the way he clunkily blocks while explaining a parry/block. Blocks in particular have to flow as if naturaly following a single track to be effective which is not what this guy shows. Now I know he only showed one small portion but even that one important thing is so unskillfully executed. Secondly when he explained to catch the sword with the hand guard is incredibly showing on lack of experience. You should'nt be blocking with the intention of the sword getting caught on the hand guard but as more of just in case kind of thing. As I said before blocks are more of a flow and go, and less of a catch and stop then go. Very clankity with the socalled experts movement even for a display.
To stiff with foot movement
This guy teaches advice that could get you killed, if swung hard enough a katana could easily shatter the handle of the blade. If you want proper advice go to another video
LyricalStare no it wouldn’t but it will push down hard from the momentum of the strike or he can just impale right away that works too
@@wakandaboshit3196 So you mean to tell me that if someone swings a Katana at full speed against a handle it would not shatter?
LyricalStare no it will bend it not glass so it won’t shatter
@@wakandaboshit3196 okay I can understand your point.
@@wakandaboshit3196 But in a real life situation you DO NOT WANT TO CATCH IT AT THE HANDLE,because there is a possibility you may loose fingers
Good way to lose an arm..parry my sword like that. I dare you
I'm just getting my katana in the mail real soon, and if I learn from these guys any longer, I'll definitely lose a limb. Why not just hire a professional Japanese swordsman who can demonstrate and knows how to wield a katana properly?
This is not kendo.
Wait a minute they got this shit ass backwards the other guy should be teaching
this looks totally lame, especially that they didn't show full speed attack/block/counterattack combo
Sweet
Expert on kenjutsu my arse wtf is this block with the tsuba. And parry and twirl around the enemy’s sword.?.?!!?.!?. Pppffftttt
What a mess...
THIS GUY WANTS TO KILL HIM FOR REAL CHECK THE OTHER VIDS!
Seriously?
What the fuck is this? I sure hope it's Kendo and not Shinkendo or a more serious sword technique. Catching with the Tsuba? Have fun dying as they thrust their blade along your neck. Also, poor ass Jodan.
why is it that a white guy is teaching and the asian guy is just a helper?
wow
RIP
More tips of sex in public tips plox
No.... just, NO!
your ma must be proud
the black shoalin kung fu is better :)
All I see is kote!!! 😂
I had consulted my trainers about this. They all agree that the most likely scenario would be that the blade would cut through the tsuba, since it is made of a much higher quality metal than the tsuba itself. You sir just lost an arm.
I would rather use machete to fight this guy
This is the dumbest thing I’ve seen in a good while
This teaches you nothing
Lol!
Delete this video bro . Plz . Try again 💯
Lol
Firs... wait im not a wanker.
If u guys down in the comments know so much more than this guy in the video, then post some videos on how u think it should be done. Commenting Wont make us any better at blocking
Hi! To be honest..... They are actually all right. I've watched all the videos and this guy is actually a very bad instructor. In a combat situation you wouldn't want to block like that. It is a last resort block to use the tsuba. A Katana is actually not constructed to do hard blocks, you would rather try some sort of deflection.
Velmat honestly please or leave a link of anactually basic tchnq i can't find any
I'm sorry that i couldn't really provide any links on how it's actually done, but maybe you could learn more even by watching fights than with this guy.
I don't know too much about kendo, but i practiced karate for 9 years (in case you don't believe me, it was shotokan style, i competed a few times in the ISKF tournaments in kata, kumite and team combat; my favoirite kata was Gojushiho Sho). And on the other hand, i like watching kendo fights and i follow youtubers like Skallagrim, Lindibeige and of course Metatron, so i'm not an expert on sword fighting, but on what this guy concerns, it just makes things worse. It's like if an elementary school kid can spot mistakes on the math of a supposed expert.
At 0:37 that only works if the opponent is not moving at all (if for some reason he's not attacking again, he's not defending, not struggling, not trying to flee).
At 0:48 he blocked almost vertically, rellying on a pretty small guard (it can fail easily) .
Around 0:49 his stance looked pretty unstable to me.
At 0:55 his way of walking was really slow and ineffective (two steps to be able to cut when the other one is already close enough to get to you with his sword...)
The movements overall seemed disconected, when for what i've seen, groups of muscles should work togheter to generate more strength, that's kind of a general principle. Even the guy that was suppossed to be helping him seemed to know better how to move in general. So yeah, i'm no sword expert, but the general principles of combat shouldn't change that much if you fight with your hands or if you fight with a sword or a stick.
