These will be brilliant in 5-10 years time when they have even better tech inside. Maybe the big brands will jump in with better quality filters, display and construction, just think of one by Yaesu or Icom but it would have a premium price and these ATS will be better built at a price range suited for the more common folk like me lol. The best thing to have happened was for the CB radios to have jumped to stupid prices that made it more logical to save a bit more and buy a ham radio for the 11mtrs that allowed the more flow of ham radios being sold as the Ham user had a larger buying market for them to sell their radio to fund their new replacement but also generated a larger window for the likes of this ATS and other SDR usb boxes, personaly I still love my CB and will always have one for local chit chat, but technology in radio communication at this point of time is moving faster than most can keep up with somewhat like computers as buy the top spec PC today and tomorrow your in second place. Still lovin the waffel and magic hands before the main attraction lol.
Thanks John. Totally agree with you that this hybrid type of SDR radios will only get better with time. Better controls, better software etc. The basics are already there.
Not bad audio there Fred. I steered clear of this receiver after reading about the firmware issues, but that sounds as good as Xhdata and Tecsun receivers if not better on 11m. I monitor 11m on a handheld Uniden Scanner if I’m not in the radio room, way better and faster than receivers. Within seconds you know if there is any skip coming in, who is on etc. They are a great tool for monitoring comms 👍🏼
Hi Fred, glad you brought that up about the 800 kc or so off frequency. I was worried that mine was the only one as it does the exact same thing. For what it is, it seems to me a fairly good receiver. I'm enjoying mine but soon as the new wears off I'd like to look at the ATS-25 they have out. 73's and take care.
I was looking at this unit today for listening to SW....it looks odd, a lot of the buttons are on the back...but it's interesting to hear it up and running.
@@CB-RADIO-UK being that the ATS-20 uses the Si4732 it might be pretty interesting as SSB mode has to be patched in the chip each time you go into SSB mode (which it why it takes a while to go from AM to SSB).
Fred I have looked this model up and some have micro USB and others have C type connector for charging. I wonder if they improved things with the C types!
Hi Fred. Thanx for this video! Can you tell me if there is a scan mode on this radio? If it's the case, what is the way to get it? Thank you for what you do, keep going. 73, 14RFI101, Damien from France.
Funny you ask. I myself could not get a scan function working but others have said you push in the VFO and hold but mine just goes to the BFO. So mine does not scan.
can u hear 11 meters call freq on usb on this unit?im post too get one for these for christmas i was just woundering on this this unit decice ? can any body tell me pzz?
What is that huge transiever in the background Fred??? Kenwood,Yeasu??? Just had to ask. Ive never seen anything like that before,Interesting, but what sort of aplication is that for???
Fred, slightly "off subject"... GMRS.... Its causing people to move away from CB in North America, yet non existent in the UK!! Will it migrate across the pond like CB did?? 50watts output and repeater use! Hmmm?!
You pay for what you get.it looks cheap and nasty. You might as well have a proper receiver if that's what your into. Why does it say fm on the front if it's only am?
To each their own. For a backpacking radio to use in remote locations or camping, I think it fits the bill. Its all about the end users intended uses. For a cheap intro to shortwave and MW listening, I think its awesome. A C Crane Skywave SSB is more than 3 times the cost, so for someone just wanting to see if they would enjoy SW listening it is a very attractive option.
another good video fred, i have the ats-20 vuy mine has a screw in antenna not bnc, so connected a long wire + it still picks up on bands
Got mine last week working fantastic on a big antenna
Good to hear

I believe the new ATS-20+ has a better encoder. I think the same as the ATS-25 which I have and enjoy very much . Enjoy your channel. 73's
Thanks for the info!
Frid in the shod ATS 20. Si 4732 Receiving CB. This cool lt sounds good
Nice video as all ways MR Fred
You need to make a autuner
So you drop signal down
N a alp encoder works sweet

I just got an ATS-25 and it’s about 350-800 off freq as well. No biggie. It’s very fun to use.
@@InertArmadillo I agree. No biggie, I like it too!
Thanks for the info!
8 Mhz off frequency?? One would hope not..
Hi Fred another great video, 73 mark
My icon 718 had a similar problem with the Agc on +30 signals, turning the RF gain down smoothed it out.
Hi. Yes the AGC is too strong at present.
I was looking at this unit today for listening to SW....it looks odd, a lot of the buttons are on the back...but it's interesting to hear it up and running.
Its pretty good for £50. Works really well on SW

Greatlittleunits for the money with not to bad rx
I'm totally frustrated with my ATS-20 plus. Updated the firmware and still facing the same issue. I can tune only FM stations.
I wonder if you could fiddle around with the Arduino sketch to get a better alignment on the frequency
Yes you might be able too. Prob a bit beyond me but iam sure there is info on line

Ive read review with both types of charging USB and they both seem to be the same with the odd issue etc.

Would be either a Yaesu 450d or Alinco DX77e
Quick one, if you press the tuning dial it will go into scanning mode, it does on mine, hope this helps ?
Hi mine just goes to BFO mode.
Very annoying to get that chuff, but still good reception and noise quite low. CT4089.

Hi Richard. Ive never heard of it over here ?
Semms to work quit well dowsnt like to be overload too bad it doesnt have fm and a better agc
This or the pl330 for my 1st ssb?
The Tecsun.

It only covers the FM broadcast band at present. However this is an open source project so future filmware upgrades may change that.
The FM refers to VHF broadcast FM this radio will not receive FM mode on the HF bands. I believe it's a limitation of the si4732 chip
