- The canoe world lost someone very special - Dan Cooke of Cooke Custom Sewing. He was a pure joy to hang around with during the yearly outdoor shows. His passion for wilderness travel was infectious, his knowledge of gear and outdoor skills incredible, his smile unforgettable, and his white beard was absolutely legendary. My heart goes out to his friends and family today. He will be missed.
I've known Dan for about 35 years, and he's made me some custom items to my specs. I loved his engineering brain, but more so his love of all human (and non-human) beings. I will miss you Dan! On to the next sojourn... Peace.

Hi Nathan. Hope you and the family are holding up ok.
I had the pleasure of designing and picking up my finished tarps, pack bags and spray deck from Dan’s home and a few other personal interactions at canoeing events. Dan was a man of character, far beyond just being a great paddler and exceptional gear maker. and he took the opportunity to influence others for the better.
Yes he was fun and entertaining, but he was humble and generous as well. His heart was huge and he shared it.
The paddling community suffers a great loss today in a man of honor and character. And we are thankful for him….
Dan was the first gear sewing guy I ever heard of, many years ago. CCS is fantastic kit. RIP Dan Cooke.

Somehow missed this earlier in the year. This is outstanding. Thank you for posting. I miss Dan. Great guy. I'm grateful to have paddled with him last fall and to have visited him at his house not long before he died. His outstanding CCS outdoor gear will continue to join me on wilderness trips.
I was with Dan on a month long Antarctica sea kayaking trip. Dan made such a positive impact on me that I made him an honorary Australian.
I always looked forward to seeing Dan at the Outdoor Expo. I have used and taught tarpology with CCS tarps for about 30 years. My world was a better place for having known him. RIP Dan Cooke.

20 years ago, I got a used CCS tarp that I’m still hanging at every site on more than 6 trips a year. It is my best piece of gear! Dan was a genius and a true gentlemen. RIP.
I bought a leanto tarp and large tarp from Dan more than 20 years ago and both are still going strong. Very sad news for the outdoor community

The company and gear will live on through Dan's son Nate, so even though we lost a good friend we haven't lost CCS!!!
