Hives are very commonly seen and they are called as Allergy by lay people. So what is the cause if these hives? Hives look like flat swelling on the skin on the arms, on the face. It can come on any part of the body including the hands and feet. So it usually looks like tiny red skin elevations, but it can become large flat map like areas of elevation as well. In medical term it is called as Urticaria and it is so common that it is believed that more than 90% of the population will have hives atleast once in their lifetime. It can be seen as a reaction and mostly people describe it as mosquito bites or ant bites , which become more swollen but hives become bigger and bigger and it can become a very severe problem as it disturbs the activities because are busy scratching, but if it involves your eyes, your lips, you are compromised even the breathing. So it is a serious condition, however it can be seen very very commonly as a common condition. So what are the common causes of Hives? It can be an insect bite allergy, you can be having it because of insect bite or it can be because of some food or some drug that does not agree with you. Usually people are able to tell us that, if we had one particular food like milk or egg, then I used to get this kind of allergy. It may look like mild redness or itching when you scratch , but it comes every time you eat that particular medicine or that particular food. The other thing is sometimes with chronic infections, especially with Hepatitis infection also you se hives. So when you first see a doctor the doctor will ask you how long you have had this symptom. Is it something very new or few days old, then the concerns may be like insect bite or food allergy or medicine allergy but when it starts to last longer and longer then it could be the marker of some underlying problem like thyroid problem or hormone problem or viral infection and urinary infection. The common treatment of Hives is Antiallergy tablets called as Antihistamines. There are many types of Antihistamines. It doesn’t mean that if you don’t respond to one Antihistamines, it will not work for you. Antihistamines are very mild medicines they don’t have side effects. So you can take them for long period of time safely. Sometimes when the case is not diagnosed then they can be taken for months together, even years together, please don’t worry, so you have to rule out the underlying condition. So if you are having hives, which are not responding to treatment. Please speak to your dermatologist and get a more clarity on what is happening to you.

I was also suffering from this from 2021… it used to occur randomly… but instead of taking medicines to suppress it… I tried to study about it and understood that it is all due to increased pitta dosh in body… basically I can tell you what I did.. I replaced moisturisers by coconut oil and I apply twice on my full body… I started having food without much spice .. in dinner I used to take only dal with salad or tried to take light food… I completely avoided red chilly and the garam masalas and had very simple food…. I took safi also..started running and weight lifting… basically I improved my lifestyle with simple food….. Hii mam i have ige level near 1200 and was suggested to take Levotrizine for a week. While taking the medicine there was no irching or rashes but after stopped taking medicine the problem arrived again... So can u suggest me good medicine. Thank u

Hello doctor 😀.over a year ago I had a hives breakout under my arms which caused me to scratch,it then turned into a fungal infection under my arms after scratching and now I have been breaking out with jock itch which is another tinea or fungal infection and I have not been getting any luck from my doctor with treatment and I am sick of buying medication that simply is not working.Have you heard of hives breaking out into tinea coropus before?

I put a dove hand moustrizer on my hands cause my monthly ezema on my right hand came up n i didnt want it to start nore red so i put it on then minutes later my hand was real itcy so i started to itch my hands and they went real red and didnt go away then like 4mins later i looked on my hands and they had white spots, kinda scared me so i washed off whatever cream that was left on my hands and told my mom :) she said to jus leave it so yk, thank fuck it wasnt a bad one BUT how do i know what ingredient i was allergic to?

whenever this hives starts to come out to my skin i will drink antihistamine and in an hour or 2 they will be gone but after 3 days it will be back again. im a bit worried of this hives because they keep showing and showing. i think i got it from an insect bite and sometimes i feel some pain or crawling inside. I hope this hives will leave me . Im really worried because its almost 1 month until now. is Sulfur soap okay whenever this allergies show?

This just started happening in my late 20s but I'm getting hives only on my face and neck when it's hot and possibly other scenarios I'm not sure of like my pillow case or fabrics. Hello, I have had this and had no idea on why I got it suddenly even though i didn't get any insect bites or similar things. When I went to a doctor, he asked me questions like how long was it, whether any insect bit me, whether I ate any new kind of food, or used any new skin products etc. I said no and I went to the doc after 2 days of getting it. He said it is just a hive/allergy and the cause can be literally anything like food, insect bite, any medication or skin care products and prescribed me some medicines. It worked really well. But I got the allergy again, I would get allergies on my hands, thighs, sitting area and sometimes on my eye surrounding area and lips. I took the prescribed medicine again. And one day I got to know the cause of my allergy. It was a simple hair oil that I used that had ayurvedic ingredients which caused me the allergy. I couldn't find out earlier as I used hair oil applicator on my scalp and not on my hair. I used a different oil on my hair strands. I also found that I got this allergy when I used a cream which had licorice. So, try to find out the cause which causes you the hives, because medications are temporarily solutions that we can't rely on forever. Sorry for the long reply. Hope this helps you.

Doctor.. i would like have your comment.. 1 motnh ago my child is down with shingles for about 2 weeks plus.. then he start having allergic like rashes on the same area as the shingle. Last week.. he start having hives like rashes on the same parts of the body . Why he continuous to habe this kind of skin problem as the problem tend to be at the same area as his shingle started.. the shingle area is at the upper cheat just near the right armpit.

Mam i want to ask that a year ago i have these hives for 5-6 months then after taking some antihistamines for 3 months and some ayurvedic medicine for 2 these are cured but after 4-5 months these hives are appearing further in some parts, did i have some serious problem

I have it for 17 years and I'm taking cetrizine 10 mg from that time to till now...
I have noticed that Sudden increase in my body temperature causes it for example
1) after coming to home from outside

The only thing it made me feel the next day like I had a hang over, but better than having itchy hives. I went next searching and trying body wash. Aveeno is good but itching starts right away. I found great itch relief with "Naturesce- Jock itch". It's like a magic wash on affected areas, I bought it through Amazon for about $12. I use a small quantity with a sponge bathing brush at night and then use Aveeno wash because the Jock itch smells like tree medicine to me. I get to finally sleep at nights. Everyone's body is different and so many different things out there that cause allergic reactions on each person. Some cases more severe than others, that's why Professionals always say talk to your Doctor or Specialist first. What works for me, may not work for you. Good luck!

Many thanks to you mam for the information. I have been facing this problem from the past 3 years. I consulted with many doctors still the hives not completely cured. I am using KZ soap and Luliconazole ointment on a regular basis along with Itraconazole tablets.
My problem is that, whenever I work or play or do some activities during day time, hives will start to appear on my face and around the neck and even in hand also.
