- Rocks come in many shapes and sizes, and they come many colors too! In this video, we explore easy ways to painting different types of rocks, such as smooth granite rocks and long sharp jagged rocks. I also show you how NOT to paint a rock, as I fall victim to the all too common mistake - overbrushing! Tune in to find out how I redeem myself.

Thanks for leaving in the "what not to do". More artists are beginning to leave in the mistakes and its so very valuable.
My pleasure!
Ha, UA-cam suggested this video right before I was going to practice some rock painting. Thanks!
Rock on!
Loved your techniques with the brush, never saw them before, sometimes I try to figure out how the artist got a certain effect and your tips opened up a whole new world for my paintings… so, no words to thank you enough 🙏🏻❤️🤗

Thank you! I’ll have more demonstrations shortly.
Very informative. Well done!
Thank you!
Very nice video, thanks for making it. I've always struggled with rocks. Question for you(in a somewhat related area), would you do something similar to suggest architectural stone textures? I love to paint when I travel to Europe, and I'm always attracted to old buildings, houses, squares, etc., and I'm always looking for good ways to suggest these surfaces. Thanks!
Thank you! Yes, I think that similar concepts apply. For example, a palette knife can be used to create texture in brick or other architectural stones if showing those stones up close, but if they are further away they would not have as much detail. Having a light and shadow side can also help enhance the painting.
Great . Do you let any other colors dry while doing the rock or are you wet or wet the entire time?
To create hard edges I wait for the paint to dry. Soft edges are best done wet on wet but can also be diffused later with clean water.
Very nice-what color do you use?
Mostly raw sienna, brunt sienna, and ultramarine blue
Wauhh video, what colors did you use in the last rock? Thanks ❤
raw sienna, burnt sienna, and ultramarine blue
how wet? like mostly but not quite dry?
Yes, it takes a bit of practice not bringing in too much or too little water
Do you leave the pencil marks?
Most of the time I do leave pencil marks. But, if I’m painting certain things like clouds, I would try not to.
Solution #2 pretend its a gold nugget!
