Ogie is the original artist and the composer of Bakit Ngayon ka Lang. he was singing solo.
Freestyle and Pops Fernandez (Martin Nievera's ex-wife) just did a version of it. that version became popular especially to the younger people.

"Bakit ngayon ka lang" was originally a solo song by Ogie (1993). The duet happened with Freestyle and Pops several years later during one of the band's concerts.
I wish I knew whose idea it was to do the overlapping melodies and lyrics. The original melody and lyrics is carried by the male part.

Glad you discovered Pop Fernandez. She’s Martin Nievera’s ex-wife. They were the Concert King & Queen of the Philippines. Their son Robin Nievera, is the guitarist for Zia Quizon on Wish and she is the daughter of Zsa Zsa Padilla (you see her on ASAP with Regine, Martin & Gary V). So those two have impeccable musical pedigree.
Ogre Alcasid wrote this song. If I may suggest, aside from looking up more of Pop Fernandez videos, maybe you’d like to review Obie Alcasid-written songs sang by your favorite Filipino singers. I believe he was a songwriter first before he became a huge OPM singer.
Also, congrats on your 1MX Opening gig! You are are the best choice for that! You know and admire the artists and I know you’ll have a blast opening for them and getting to know them backstage. I hope you get that opportunity!

I think Ogie as a singer pales in comparison to himself as a composer, which most people tend to overlook or forget due to his success as singer, actor, and comedian. Btw i also notice that ogie usually sings his composed songs very casually, without trying hard to make it sound very good, and just trusting that its already good enough on its own, thats just what i think.
ogie alcasid is the original singer / composer of the song late 80's or early 90's, its not a duet but done solo and in the early 2000's freestyle have been performing the song on their gigs rearrange the song as a duet for top and jinky and one of their major concerts they have pops as a guest and apparently the top and pops duet became so iconic that having the song as a duet is more popular than a solo

Freestyle and South Border were my top 2 bands in the early 2000s. I have all their albums in cassette tape. I'm also glad to see Pops Fernandez. She is a fantastic singer but she doesn't make many public appearances now so it's always nice to see a clip of her.

"Bakit Ngayon Ka Lang" is truly an iconic song. 😊 Just want to point out that the Filipino language doesn't have gendered pronouns, so the word "siya" in the lyrics can mean him/her and the song can be sung from either perspective. E.g. "At siya ba'y dapat ko nang limutin" can mean "And should I forget him/her"
Well that was why it sounded one sided on Waleska and Efra's.
I have always interpreted it as the duo were lovers outside marriage or something the like.
And when we look it at marriage in the Philippines where there is no divorce, one would feel like the (right) person came too late, hence the question, "bakit ngayon ka lang?"

I pointed out the gendered pronouns thing because at 18:57, when Efra and Waleska looked up the lyrics, the English translation made it sound like the song was mainly sung by the man and the woman is just there to harmonize. I brought up what "siya" means to hopefully give the song more nuance for them and for everyone else who likes the song but doesn't speak Tagalog.
Anyone who's caught up in a "Bakit Ngayon Ka Lang" situation can definitely relate to it regardless of gender! :)

Pops Fernandez is the Concert Queen of the Philippines, she doesn't have that strong vocal but she has (used to be, not that active anymore) that appeal.
Ogie wrote a lot of songs but this one i think was one of the most covered. Also, if i remember correctly. Ogie wrote this for Regine before they got together because he was married to a different woman before he and Regine got together.
The title means "Why just now?" although there is not direct English translation but the thought is "why did u arrive just now in my life when someone else already owns my heart". It's such a tragic song.

Bakit ngayon ka lang means why have you come just now (Haha i feel like there is an easier way to say or translate this but yea, thats all my brain can squeeze right now. Haha) It talks about someone coming your way while you are already in a relationship - a regret for what could have been.
PS. Eric and Angeline Quinto used to date. Dont know if they were still dating there on that performance though. I think they still were.

If my memory serves me right (sorry didn't research further) 'Bakit Ngayon Ka Lang' was written and composed by Ogie Alcasid back in the 80's or 90's. Revived by Freestyle in the 2000's... 'Duet' arrangement was popularized by Freestyle during one of their concerts with Pops Fernandez as their guest.
As you know now, the 'Duet' has been covered by so many other artists.

Fun facts: When you say to a Filipino singer his/ her singing is kind of textbook, it sounds like a little bit an insult to them hehe coz they want to be par with they're unique, they're monster or the only one who can do it.
