Every Trail Boss video on TFL
Start- this is an OKAY off-roader
Ends- THIS THING WAS AWESOME
Just got mine yeah I’m pretty happy
Can't see over the hood, no forward facing camera...it ain't no Boss. More like 1st yr apprentice.
I liked how Tommy made the reference to the office.
Dear TFL,
I've been watching since 2015, and man how far the video production of your videos have come. Keep going strong! I wish the best to TFL😁
@Jaron Flanagin shut up
Haha!
Was on Imogene two weeks ago and right after the split to Yankee Boy and Imogene we were stopped for a while by some guys working. They said that they were filming a commercial on tires up ahead on the trail and that we would have to wait a few minutes. When they let us go we went up the trail a little ways and they were actually filming a Subaru commercial testing the new Outback. They tried to cover them up but you could plainly see them and besides come on, it’s a Subaru. Nobodies getting excited to get a first look 😂
Nobody is getting excited for a first look? Haha, you clearly haven't met an Oregonian before lol
@@TheCriminalViolin My daughter lived in Portland for three years, everybody drives a Subaru there but they're definitely not exciting
@@TexasOverlander It is exciting to diehard Subaru fans and loyalists though. Which was my point. Actually, Rally Car Drivers too now that I think about it. But yes, everybody adores their subarus around here.
@@TheCriminalViolin or an Washingtonian as me🤣
The trail boss did very well. It isn't a built jeep. It won't do built jeep things. But it does a good job.
That is a beautiful trail if not a bit busy.
Assistant to the trail manager hahahahha yeah yeah we got that reference. Who doesn't

@@john-martin it's funny you say that I have a 08 2500 z71 and never seen the office only know it's from that from comments lol
For those of us with stubborn wives who refuse to move to Colorado from New England, I can’t say enough how much we love and need these videos to keep the dream alive. 😄👍🏻
Thanks for the kind words!
5MillCity as an ex- New Englander myself perhaps “stubborn ex-wives“?
Two things I've learned by watching dedicated overlanders on UA-cam that I think this great video bear out - you use whatever vehicle you've got to get out there and explore as far as it will take you and bigger tires are not always better.
They’re bias asf. Every other long term truck they gotten has a lift and such and this one is just bone stock 🙄. They obviously never liked the TrailBoss 😂
@@crystal2latina509 they are just proving the Trail boss is very capable out of the box. You can fit 34" tires on them no lift more lift needed either.
Crystal2Latina negative Ghost Rider. Their yellow Titan Pro-4X loaner was unmodified and they had many good things to say about it.

just traded my tundra in on the same truck with all the extra packages. love the extra ground clearance , bose stereo system and fuel mileage! lol thanks for the videos!
Is it as good as the Tundra in terms of performance?
Love my 2020 5.3/10 speed at4 really is capable and does everything well. 12000 miles already and going strong 💪
out of curiosity what is your payload and your configuration
2019 Z71 with 28k with not a problem. Love it.
@@adambrigman9813 1500 payload and 9400 max tow. But I've hauled more than 1500 without a problem.
Carlos Campos thanks
AT4 10 speed must add a lot of weight. My 2019 LTZ 5.3 8speed with heavy deploying running boards has 1734 payload and 9634 towing. I think this can be a deal breaker if you are trying a tow maybe a toy hauler and gear.
I don’t understand why you guys are always crapping on this truck when it does what it’s supposed to do pretty well. At least it has a g80. Toyota gives you nothing and everybody loves those ugly dated rascals.
@Jaron Flanagin Yet here you are watching the channel. Thanks for adding a view to their count!
@Jaron Flanagin You sound jealous and bitter.
Jaron Flanagin I enjoy coming here to get away from politics and here you are with your political rhetoric. And it doesn’t even make sense.
I agree, Toyota is sooo behind in technology, even basic stuff like a locking diff. they are behind on.
The tundra has a limited ship which is probably similar to the g80. Both should have electronic lockers though
The locker is not ideal. It's "spin, spin, lock" Tends to launch it forward when it locks and seems like something that would wear out after some regular off roading.... :-) @13:22
I recently went from a 2018 Colorado ZR2 to a 2020 Ram 1500 Rebel, I've done some Colorado mountain passes with the ZR2 and it did fine. The Rebel is likely to handle them fine too, granted I may have to do a 3 point instead of a 2 point going around some of the switch backs.
But here's one thing that I found that disappointed me with the Rebel. Some of the brain dead electronics. For instance going backwards the front sensors are active so it beeps for the car parked in front of you. In the ZR2 if you were using Apple Car Play and disconnected it would reconnect with BlueTooth and continue playing your music or podcast, same thing when you got back in the truck. The Rebel, it hunts for a bit and then uses the Radio, it even does that if you were using BlueTooth to play. It would be useful if you went through and did a comparison of the electronics in some of these since you spend probably more time using them than you do off road. I know you do cameras, which I still don't understand why they aren't even an option on the Rebel, which is useful, but it would be cool to see a comparison of the different systems used by each of these companies.
I love my 2018 ZR2. Will probably get another one in a few years.
I love my 2019 ZR2. I would buy another. Lock the front and rear diffs and It handles the rough roads here in southern AZ with no problems.
Watching you guys go off roading makes me want to move to Colorado! It looks awesome! Although we have nature that can compete here in Norway, we do not have the trails and off road possibilities that you have! Thank you for all the awesome content!
We do on Australia though
You guys have definitely filled the void left by top gear. I've been watching you guys for a few years and I look forward to all your videos. Keep up the great work! 👍🏼
I like them more than top gear, less scripted and not over the top with Hollywood-esque production budgets. one can actually go and do whatever they do in them tfl videos.
@Jaron Flanagin Ignorant comments like this add no value to an adult discussion. Are you proud of yourself?
@Jaron Flanagin Top Gear guys where too full of themselves and a-holes in real life.
@@mas921 British Top Gear was more like a fiction serial with usually fairly ridiculous ekements. It became a parody of an automotive show
Thank you guys so much for the endless great content, but especially your Trail Boss content like this. My wife and I decided to buy a trail boss after watching several of your videos, and have been scouring the internet for videos of it actually being used for overland excursions. Looking forward to the next update!
Thanks for watching and the kind words!
Hmmm wonder if I can conquer this trail with a stock 2017 GMC Sierra 1500
Get some bigger tires already! First thing I did to my last 4 trucks I've owned. Great video guys
Back in the mid-90's I took my '88 F-250 4x4 carrying with it a narrow width custom camper up through Imogene Pass. Having left from the Telluride side of the pass, the road was a narrow ribbon in some sections with barely enough room for vehicles to pass each other and with no turnaround until your reach the old mining quarry. The road passes through a tunnel and I thought I wasn't going to make it past it. Luckily it was a pop-top camper and I had sufficient room to get through past it otherwise it were to be a long way back to Telluride in reverse using just the side mirrors keeping me between the mountain on one side and a shear drop to the other. Having left Telluride a little late that morning, I just made it to the top of the pass just before sunset. I only had 10 minutes to revel in the view before the sun dipped below the peaks. Further along as it got dark it got harder and harder to spot where the road went due to the truck hood blocking my view of the road. The headlights just shot out into a dark void. The road dipping up and down was so bad I often had to step out of the truck to just see the road! Despite this being early July, there was still a snow pack in some parts and in the darkness I got lost and took a wrong trail into what can pass for a glacier field. Eventually I realized this couldn't be the route so I had to back out in reverse in the dark back to the fork in the road. That took me a *long* time of stepping in and out of the cab to get a fix on the road and having made it to the main road thereafter it became many further hours of driving in the dark on the Ouray side of the pass. Dead tired, I threw in the towel and camped out right there on the jeep trail. It was cold and being exposed to the elements above the tree line it made for very windy sleepless night. The spot where I camped can be seen as a sharp curve in 12:19 of the video. Despite it all, I was rewarded the next morning by the most spectacular view of the valley below. The trail was still slow going but I eventually came down from the mountain crossing that stream seen in the video and creeping down a rock shelf road and making the rest of the way on a forest road. I'd do it all again. The only thing different I'd change is to leave for Imogene pass from Telluride at the crack of dawn instead of late-morning.
I found the flag and cache today! Thank you.
Smoke kill the view?
Wayne Fenimore it was pretty smoky Monday almost to the point where we considered leaving the area. But the snow/rain helped to clear up everything and we were back on the trail.
I know many have said it but y’all really should add the ReadyLift SST lift and 35’s. Would make the TB a lot more capable and would make for a great video. Thanks for another awesome video with the Trailboss!
Ouch, your wallet, Tommy, looks just like George Costanzas.
Lol that's what I was thinking also
That was an old man wallet and tommy is like 22. Haha

Tommy, word of advice from the older set, please don’t sit on that wallet all day. It’s an eventual road to misery for your hips, glutes and back. We’re talking surgery in 30 years.
Another excellent quality video from TFL. Only been watching a few months but I’ve subscribed to all your channels. Really enjoy the quality of filming and editing and music and vehicle knowledge by the entire TFL team!
Thank you!
Love seeing where the full size trucks will fit in Colorado
I have an 05' Colorado Work truck with upgraded suspension and oversized tires. It's the 2.8L 5 speed manual 4x4 variant and it handles Imogene like a champ! I absolutely love this drive and finding a good truck to run it makes all the difference. Enjoyed the video since I haven't been able to get up there for almost 3 years now. Maybe this summer
I like your honest comments about what you like and don't like about the truck. Other people can disagree and that's fine. I'd love to see you do the same trip with other stock pickups, like what most people drive. This trail is on my bucket list to do with my 2018 Tundra TRD.
I was part of the raptor group, we had already done Vegas, Sedona, and Moab, thanks for the shoutout! #GLREOFFROAD
Now try doing Devils staircase in Sedona, or Crown King in AZ then I’ll give you props in the Raptor because those ain’t fitting lol. For sure not Black Bear Pass.
I own a 2019 TB LT in black, and I love it!!! It’s the perfect truck for me, very capable, looks rugged and aggressive,(aka) Vader!!!
Awesome video... I ended up going with the 2021 Trail Boss after watching this video (plus other reasoning). In the comments, you mention it being mostly stock. Where there any upgrades to the suspension/clearance or was that all stock? We plan on making this truck in June.
The weather (wind, rain, temp) at those altitudes it's so nice to have the shelter of a truck, unlike a SxS.
So the trail boss did better at moab than the rebel, and even hit less than the raptor. It made it up the dare side of cliff hanger 2.0 with Andre. It may not have all the off road gear but it seems to get the job done every time. It's also one of the most affordable trucks out there for off road. Not saying it's the best but you have to give chevy some props.
Another spectacular, amazingly well done video Tommy & Roman !!! Keep up the good work and keep posting them up because I sure like to watch them and also the breathtaking views of what Colorado has to offer.
🙌👌👍🤘☝️💪😎
Recently purchased a used sierra Z71. Had to test out that g80 you speak of, it really is as refined as a fart in church. A locker when needed is good to have but oof.
Damn, I assumed yall were gonna go down Black Bear in the full sizes also. It's only 6 inches longer wheelbase.
So we had a Raptor behind us on Black Bear two weeks ago and we were almost to the famous switchbacks and he ran out of gas 😝. We gave him a couple of gallons from our Roto-Pax
I take my ram rebel all thru ouray and still have a good time in the trails. The comfort and the visibility just can’t beat it
Imogene Pass was great! I was the Lead Raptor and after watching the video you 100% need a Raptor. Or maybe not if you have not ambition to get anywhere in any normal amount of time Offroad.
From the Desert of Nevada, California and Arizona (700+miles Offroad) averaging 80+mph Heres a video: ua-cam.com/video/FApVlkh1p1Y/v-deo.html
To Hells Revenge, Hells Gate, a Hot Tub
Then Imogene Pass all in 5 days.
Raptor does way more than just Baja!
When you can do black bear pass in a Raptor then I’ll give you props. Raptors are to wide great trucks but not good for small areas. I’ll also give you props if you can do all of crown king I’m AZ but that truck wouldn’t do it.
Taco Traplord many Raptors have done Black Bear. No big deal
Just stating that just because the Raptor is marketed as a high speed desert truck doesn’t mean it can’t do other off-roading. I would argue it maybe the most versatile Offroad vehicle.

I've had my trail boss for 6 000 miles now and TFL helped me decide the right truck for me and your getting a like for Tommy's comment. "Assistant to the trail manager."
Again the Silverado wasn’t expected to do well and it does, just like Moab.
Come on Tommy, just start liking this truck! Stop resisting! It may not be flashy like competitors but it just does everything well.
cintocrunch because it’s not a Jeep, TFL LOVES their Jeep. Anything else has to work twice as hard to earn their praise.
jeeps are great for off road but they are terrible for everything else.
Wes Shepard Have you driven the Wrangler JLs? They are much more refined and comfortable on-road than they used to be...
Yas honestly not in years. I’m 6’2” and when I go to the car show, I sit in them and can’t understand how these guys fit in them. no matter how refined they’ve become they do not fit large men like me very well.
@@officialyasir they handle like shit on road, steering wheel is so loose
That truck could have probably done that in 2WD. With the exception of a couple sections, it was basically a gravel road.
Fairly moderate dirt road but at a extremely high altitude
Nice job trying to keep the offroad trip alive. Hopefully you can take the trip next summer. Took my kids and some of their friends out west for 6 weeks going from Arizona to Montana wild camping most nights and they loved it. (about a decade ago) If you can take your time traveling anywhere in the USA you can find awesome places to go, out west has a lot more open camping though. I am glad you are getting out there and doing something, safely. Stay safe and healthy and hug the little guy, he has to be up to 50 pounds by now.
FYI that was the GLRE off-road crew in the Raptors at the end. Mine was the black one with the white fenders. @patriot.raptor on IG and UA-cam. We had an absolute blast on Imogene pass. However I’m pretty sure the Jeeps weren’t real happy we were there 😂😂. Wish I would’ve recognized you guys, would have loved to stop and chat.
Great video guys. I saw some comments about how unfair it is that the Trail Boss has not gotten any attention with upgrades and such to make it better off-road but I for one appreciate what you are showing us with the Trail Boss. I see a vehicle that does not NEED any of those upgrades and while they would be nice it has done everything you have asked of it with no major issues. It is the truck that most of us GM guys will buy (5.3 with decent options) and really most of us will keep it stock for the first few years of ownership. During that time it will do really most anything you would need without a problem. Maybe calling it a BOSS is a bit of a stretch, but is is certainly the grunt you need working for you that just works away quietly not asking for anything other than gas in return. Thanks guys!
Did Imogene several years ago in my 2002 Dakota QuadCab and it handled the pass nicely. Only scraped once heading down the mountain. Never saw any full sized trucks, just lots of Tacomas.
I remember this particular pass because right at the beginning there was a 90 year old guy and his granddaughter in relatively new Jeep Renegade and they were stuck in the middle of the road because they couldn't get over an obstacle. I offered to help and got in their Jeep and looked over the 4x4 options like "Sand, rock, snow, etc" and couldn't get the thing to move properly. After some more investigating I realized they had their e-brake on which in those vehicles is a tiny little plastic switch. They took off and kept going and I assumed they made it over to the other side as we didn't see them stuck again.
I love you guys, but I'm sorry.... That roof top tent sticking way up in the air on those ladder racks is just ridiculous! Lower it down below the cab roof line.
Agreed
*Hopefully someone is able to find the giveaway before the snow hits Monday night!*
I did this trail in my stock 2000 F150 with open front and rear diffs,it was a bit challenging in some areas for sure, but I've been over this pass many times, it's definitely easier coming from the Telluride side down into Ouray
I lived outside Telluride for a couple of years, and this video has me really missing that area. I took my bone stock 1999 F-250 SD 4x4 (super cab, long bed) over Imogene many times. Such a beautiful ride.
Its trucks like the ram rebel and chevy trail boss/ gmc at4 that are the best full size off road trucks. They are still enough truck to do work but also rugged enough off road for what you need outside of jeep rock crawling.
Definitely agree, they should have gone with much bigger tires!
Haha I just did Imogene two weeks ago with my Trailboss! Great video! I did it in the day and the middle of night. At night it literally felt like going through a horror film.
Purchased my 2021 TB close to 2 years ago, only visits to dealer were for LOF and tire rotation, truck has been flawless, The G80 is a Eaton mechanical locker, GM has used it in there trucks for 40+ years, I learned about it when I purchased a 1993 chevy pickup in 1998, 2WD std cab long bed, and when it snowed or in the mud, that thing wouldn't get stuck, i couldn't answer my buddies why it did better than theirs, so a little research and looking for the G80 on the sticker in the glove box, I found out why, now multiple GM trucks later to my Trail Boss, Every one I make sure it has a G80.
I really hope you guys never stop the trail giveaway things. I'm going to be moving to Denver as soon as it's safe to do so and will be going out on trails for sure!
This is one of your best video's i've seen to date. Absoulutely fantastic cinematiacs, and visuals!!
Was about it until found a Silverado RST Rally Edition. It’s 4x4 and got street look. Gave you best of both worlds. Only missing the lift, but city look takes that away so makes sense.
Trail boss getting harder and harder not to like.
Only thing I can't like about them is the price tag
@@FlyingFalcon77 the custom is a great option!
@@brxttz right there are grwat values in the lineup, I just don't see $50k+ msrp for what is essentially an LT with a lift kit and some other offroad goodies. I know they're selling low 40s all day long, but that msrp is nuts
Im a chevy and same, but I'm leaning rebel because i think its more offroad worthy
Your video makes me want to bring mt TB to Colorado. My only worry is I would get there and not be able to complete some of the trails, but it looks like yall did fine!
This is one of my favorite trails to run! I guess we just missed you guys going off the date of this video. Trail is worth every minute
Seriously, you guys have probably the best job I could think of. Those views, Colorado is absolutely stunning. Would you consider putting together a "must do" trail list in Colorado based on experience and truck type? As in, this trail is for beginners ... this trail would not be good for a wide Raptor. Thanks. Keep up the great shows.
Great video... nice production value here. The bed rack system looks a bit odd to me, there are plenty of bed rack systems that bring your tent level with the roof line at least, better aerodynamics and just looks better I think! Keep up the great work.
It is a bit sad though that GM calls this a "Trail Boss", meanwhile my 2018 Silverado LT with K02s and G80 could do the same.
Yes strange tent bed optuon
Anyone notice the production quality has been taken up a notch lately? loving the soundtrack and cool drone shots. Amazing job guys!
Now like a lot of Automotive UA-cam Off Road productions
I wish yall would use a regular 4x4 truck not one like the rebel or trail boss or the Fx4 just a simple 4x4 crew cab truck without any lockers great videos
Went up Imogene in August with a lifted F-150 offroad on 33 inch mud tires. No problem at all anywhere. Trucks are great for offroading too not the raptor its to wide.
What tire pressure did you guys run for this?
Awesome Video and Review.. Cool Father Son Duo. Andre and Nathan should do one too, their personalities are fun to watch. Enjoy you all as always. Cheers! Making me want a Trailboss. 🍻😎🍻
Roman, why the freak out on the Raptors. You owned one. I own one. They just have wider track and fender flares. The cab is the same. The track is narrower than the mirrors. So it goes just about anywhere. The only place I can’t get mine in is a car wash.
BTW when you took the JK over Black Bear you followed a Raptor and he did it fine.
Great video, but there should have been more scenes of the downhill part--which is where my expectation was there would be trouble with your long wheelbase.
Imogene is the freaking best...wish my friend didnt sell his lifted sequoia! That thing made quick work of all the passes around silveryon and telluride!
Gladiator creeping up from behind lol
Gotta give credit to the trail boss. For a $40k base model out the door price. It gets the job done. All it needs is 33-34in tires (no lift needed) and you guys gotta practice how to ease into the g80 locker. To don’t you need to hit the gas. Slowly roll into the throttle when one tire spins and it engages. To slow or to fast won’t work. Just ease into it and it will lock smoothly.
Get a ready lift level and 6mm wheels spacers and remove a couple oversized fender liner brackets can fit 35x12.50s
Do I heard it right at the beginning of the video?
Are you going to change the truck's wheels and tyres?
Can't wait to see how it looks!
I hope they change them out, do a deck system, and possibly a leveling kit
Can’t wait for the HD truck vid!
Man I really love my white 2020 trail boss with the 10 speed. And this video has made me love it more and I cannot wait to get my boys out on some adventures with this rig.
Great quality video. I am really enjoying these videos. Great cinematography!
the G80 has a lot of negative feedback but I have one in my 14 bolt and I really like it, it locks up solid and performs very well.
just found your videos. and love them, especially the "NomPavement Needed Series". Makes me want tomcod to Colorado. lol, Getting ready to order a 2023 F--250 XLT. What do you recommend/
Everytime I see you guys go off-road with the Trail Boss I dislike it a little more. Overall it's capable enough, but I really don't like that G80. It's so jerky when it decides to engage that I feel like it would be easy to crash into something on a tight trail. Maybe it's something you would get used to, but I would just rather have one that I can engage myself with a button.
I'm impressed with the Trail Boss on those trails for sure. AT4 is mine & i still didn't get the 360 camera though. Least it didn't break either like the highly modified Ram Rebel did.
I noticed that you scrubbed the rear bumper early on the trail. Was there a work around or different line? Do you feel that a stock Trail Boss could achieve the trail without damage or rubbing?
Are planning on doing any suspension upgrades? I bought a 2020 Silverado Custom crew cab. I purchased the Eibach pro truck lift kit. It comes with adjustable front struts new coil springs and a set of rear shocks for 589.00. I haven’t done any off-roading. The overall ride in my opinion has improved over stock and it’s leveled without any spacers.
Check out the Skyline Drive here in Utah. It takes you from Highway 6 (Spanish fork Canyon) to I-70.
You could stay a couple of night explore the trails around and it can accommodate all 3 trucks but has some interesting sections
Hey guys, I also live in Colorado. In the North East corner of the State, almost at the Nebraska border. I would love to go off roading with you guys, in my truck. If you ever want another person to tag along in their truck, please let me know! Also, how do you get to this trail? I would love to check it out sometime.
Trailboss seems like its a good all around truck and daily driver that can also go offroad and hold its own. It's not a hardcore off road truck.
Really enjoy your videos, you guys are on the come up. I definitely NEED to visit Colorado coming from the NYC area its beautiful
The graphics and videography for this video are really well done
This kid still thinks the gladiator is something lmao it’s trash ugly slow and just all around awful truck I’ll take trail boss anyway over gladiator
What a way to start a Sunday with a TFL video! Great job guys- love that Trailboss
I'd really like to see some modifications to the suspension and tires on that trail boss. Like you've said in your videos, the tires are way too small! Both the other vehicles in your "No pavement needed" segment have after market suspension and tires, why not the trail boss?
I appreciate seeing what a factory truck can do alongside the expensive modded ones. It helps bring a bit of perspective back to off-roading, not everything requires 35's, a 3" lift, and a Jeep badge...
That’s a fair point. I guess my reasoning is that I already own a stock Silverado trail boss and know what it can do, so I’m really curious which modifications would be the most impactful for off-road adventures. I want to see how much I need to change and which parts to use to get me over the next biggest off-road features. Not a lot of people are modifying trail bosses yet, so I was hoping to see/hear the lessons learned from the TFL crew because they’re great at showing their problems and solutions.
@@alexorcas1 I hadn't considered that possibility, now I'm kinda interested in what they can do as well.
The editing and camera work is awesome guys
Great video! Almost traded in my 2016 high country on one of these. With all the incentives it was really tempting.
really creative under water shot @ 10:33
Why didn't you use a Freespirit roof top tent with a built-in ladder and a foldout setup in less than 10 seconds?
There is another problem with that truck it has the g80 locker instead of a selectable locker
Beautiful scenery. My only comment is that it is much too busy, I would have thought you two would be the only ones up there instead there is a circus. That road is busier than my hwy.
Love seeing the great outdoors! Keep up the good work fellas!
Yep. Bigger tires would be a nice touch to the truck.
You guys should do an episode showing the max tire size you can fit on those rims without additional lift... Then I can copy you 😉
Any plans for bigger tires? Love the Sunday morning truck videos!
No, we’re keeping this one stock
