We, French from the Province, like to tease the Parisians and make fun of them but I'm pretty sure that we all got some Parisian friends that we love! Also we pretty much like to make fun of everyone, people from the South will make fun of the North, we all make fun of people from the mountains, people from Toulon make fun of the ones from Marseille and Nice... people from Normandy make fun of people from Brittany. People from North West Brittany make fun from people of South West Brittany... People from the 'Nord' department (59), make fun from people from the 'Pas-de-Calais' (62)... and of course we also make fun of Parisians. It's part of the folks, hating of those arrogant, unfriendly, people from the big city... making fun of others is a big part of the french culture, but at the end it's mostly just a joke!
P. V. We do the same in the US. South makes fun of Yankees. Yankees make fun of southerners. Californians well they have everything and they know it. C’est normal 😊. Vive la France 🇫🇷
Very good analysis of the situation. The only thing I disagree is the fact that he oppose Paris and the countryside. Province is not only countryside but also big cities like Lyon, Marseille, Toulouse where we are not like Parisians but still urban.
I can't speak for everyone in the states, but whenever I come across someone from NYC or LA, I could care less, in the same way many French feel about people from Paris. I don't mean I don't like them, it's just, I'm not going to fawn over the fact that they're from one of those cities. I think NYC is a beautiful city with lovely museums and culture, but just like the rest of the world has this very romanticized view of Paris, I would say the same goes for Americans in New York-people around the world LOVE NYC, we're not indifferent but we don't have that hyped up image in our heads.
It's funny. I'm from New York state, but I'm at the opposite end in Buffalo, about an 8 hour car ride. The two are completely different worlds. There are many here who love going to NYC, but there are plenty who could care less and many who actually quite despise NYC. Personally, I love visiting. I love the energy of big cities. But understandably it's not to everyone's liking. I've also been to LA, the weather is nice, but I couldn't live there. Needing a car to do just about anything is not for me. I quite prefer NoCal more tbh. Especially around Santa Cruz and Monterey. Absolutely stunning.
Also, once when I was in Paris I was staying at this tiny little hotel and after a couple days, I saw this couple who was also staying there and who were obviously and no doubt French, but they were so out of their element in Paris. A little awkward and uncomfortable, even though they were totally French. That's when I realized not all French are Parisian
I found the same in United Kingdom. London is so different from the rest of UK, despite some clichés. I know some English people living in the countryside, not wanting to have anything to do with Londoners.
I found your video to be absolutely correct. Paris is not France any more than New York is the US. And I found the Parisians to be perfectly warm and charming IF you make even a small effort to say "Bonjour." The rest of France, as you say, is "achingly beautiful" and the people could not be more friendly and welcoming. IMHO, the secret for a tourist/traveler is very simple - act like the guest that you are. Respect their ways and you will be drowned in good will and great experiences. Going back again this year and Carcasonne is on the list! Thank you both for sharing!
I have only been to Paris and France once. Even in that short time, I noticed quite a difference between Paris and "provincial" France. The people were much friendlier outside of Paris. Of course in the United States, you would notice a difference between people in New York City and Colorado where I am from. New Yorkers tend to be abrupt and Coloradoans are casual and easy going.
Love this video! I live in the country in south western France with my husband. Being Canadian, I heard all the stereotypes of France and once I arrived here was very taken aback that it was not at all what the rest of the world envisions. Then we went to Paris for a weekend and there it was! Lol. It’s sad that the rest of the world think that the capital city represents all of a country. But that’s the way it is with every country I suppose. That’s what the world sees when in reality, any country is so much more diverse than just their capital city.

Is Marseille France? Is Corsica France? Paris is France just as much as the other regions. But I understand it's irritating that Paris takes so much pride, while every region of France is absolutely gorgeous, sometimes every village. It's fair to say that Paris is stressful, busy, uncomfortable. But there is sometimes the hate of the parisiens involved, for political reasons (corsica), for sports reasons (Marseille). Many people living in the country side express their personal feelings instead of a neutral opinion. As a parisien, I admit there the vast majority of journalists and politicians live in Paris, and they dominate the medias. This caste is considered as "bobos", living in rich areas, they enjoy the good side of globalism, but they tell others how to behave, how to live, how to spend, how to vote. And this is a massive problem because this caste does not know France well. Yet, many parisiens travel a lot and do know France well, they are just not on TV shows, radios, or in the parliament as much. This small elite is the reason of the hate but don't represents the parisiens in the majority, to my mind.
Bien résumé. Les médias sont totalement déconnectés de la réalité de la France et attisent la haine. En effet, la mondialisation ne profite qu'aux plus riches. C'est pour ça qu'il faut plus de protectionnisme et de souverainisme. Il faut sortir de cette UE néolibérale dont on nous a imposé un traité qu'on avait refusé par référendum en 2005.

Je suis Française et j'habite à Nice, donc une grande ville du sud (de la "Côte d'Azur"), et je dois te dire que si nous n'aimons pas trop Paris, c'est que justement : tous les étrangers aiment tellement Paris qu'ils réduisent trop souvent la France à sa capitale... et les Parisiens aussi ont tendance à avoir cet état d'esprit de "la France, c'est nous", et dénigreront ce qu'ils appellent "la province" ou "la campagne" (comme vous dans la vidéo :p), alors qu'il y a tant de richesses dans le reste de la France que l'on ne trouve pas à Paris ! Paris est une ville très intéressante, mais ce n'est qu'une parcelle de la France parmi tant d'autres avec toutes leurs identités propres ! Je t'encourage à voyager si tu le peux.... Et je n'ai jamais vu Annecy, mais Carcassonne est vraiment très beau !! :)

Le Paris de la mode, de la « grande » culture, de l’« intellectualisme »… ne concerne réellement qu’un nombre TRÈS limité de Parisiens. Dès que l’on s’éloigne un peu des quartiers centraux prestigieux dont ne sortent jamais ces gens-là (à part peut-être pour aller prendre un vol à CDG !), on trouve des Parisiens pas si différents des provinciaux, bien plus attachés à leur environnement immédiat (« le quartier ») qu’au reste de la capitale… Et dans les quartiers excentrés et non touristiques, les non-Parisiens ne sont pas snobés par la population locale !
Je suis né et j'ai grandis á Paris dans un quartier populaire qui n'éxiste plus. Exproprié dans les années 80 de mon 15 ème arrondissement, les logements insalubres aux loyers bloqués on été rasés et remplacés par des lofts pour bourgeois et retraités aisés sur fond de spéculations immobilières forcennée. Les vrais parisiens, en particulier, ceux des classes populaires, se trouvent au dela, du périphérique, en banlieue.

Les "provinciaux" ne sont pas tous les mêmes ! Certains provinciaux ressemblent aux Parisiens des quartiers centraux, et d'autres non. Les Parisiens qui snobent n'ont rien pour snober les autres, c'est pour ça que c'est ridicule. Tout le monde sait qu'ils n'ont aucune raison d'être meilleurs. C'est pour ça qu'ils paraissent peu cultivés, enfermés entre leurs murs, etc. Ils croient représenter la France sans la connaitre. Je ne parle pas de tous les Parisiens, mais de la partie "moins cultivée que la moyenne mais qui croit l'être plus" de la France. J'ai l'impression que ces incultes pensent qu'en dehors de Paris, c'est la campagne. Alors que des villes comme Lyon par exemple n'ont rien à envier à Paris en tant que ville. Aucun rapport avec la campagne. Ce que devraient savoir certains, c'est que Paris n'est qu'une grande ville en France parmi d'autres. Rien de plus. En dehors de Paris, on a d'autres grandes villes comparables à Paris sur de nombreux aspects (histoire, culture, gastronomie, etc.).

Salut, Rosie, First, I just want to say I’m sad that you left France but I’m happy for you because of all the new opportunities you have ahead of you back in your homeland. Your videos have been so helpful and fun for my own trip to France. The trip described in this video is very similar to what I’m doing this summer. I’m taking three months and traveling slowly in a heart-shape path except I’m going clockwise and added some places outside France, partially because of my family’s heritage there. Those were Brussels and the typical day trips, Luxembourg City, and an overnight in Turin. Right now I’m in Aix-en-Provence. So much of what you’ve said in your videos is on the mark. I would add that the Nice area seems much happier with a much lighter attitude. That could possibly be attributed to their temperate climate and being on the sea. So glad I booked some time in Carcassonne! Anyway, my trip is about half done. It’s been going by fast and has been amazing. Thanks, again, for sharing all things French and Parisian!
A big yes to Carcassonne. I have a close friend who retired in SW France. I house (and chicken) sat for him in 2017, then went to Carcassonne after he got back from his trip. I stayed inside the Carcassonne Cité for 2 nights, which I HIGHLY recommend. Don't go in summer, it would be ghastly with crowds. I went in mid-October, just fabulous. Carcassonne is a must, lots of history and amazing reconstruction of the entire Cité. Many cafes and shops, plus the winding pedestrian "streets." Ahhhh. A car would be a liability, walk everywhere - both in the Cité and in the Bastide (newer town below, nearer the train station).
Also married a Frenchman this year :) Congrats to you both. And I grew up in the Charente and people used to think I was really fancy just because I would wear a skirt lol
Great video! A little tip if you want to see Carcassonne but don’t have the time to go all the way there: the little medieval town of Provins is very easy to reach from Paris (80 minutes by train, covered by the pass Navigo) and looks absolutely gorgeous. It’s a great day trip from Paris.
As someone from a concrete jungle like Hong Kong, I definitely prefer the countryside and the villages in France. Went to France twice and Lyon twice, also Dijon, Beaune, Tournon-sur-Rhône, Montpellier, etc. Loved it. We only stayed in Paris for 2 nights and that’s enough for me. Regret did not have the time to go to the Loire Valley, Alsace and the rest..........
I lived in Montpellier for four months and visited Paris. I am a fluent French speaker, and personally found Parisians much more friendly than people from the south. Maybe it was just my experience. I am looking forward to returning to France!

I moved to Toulouse 6 months ago and I've already been to Carcassonne twice - it's amazing! The newer part of the city outside of the walls is beautiful too. I definitely found a lot of videos I watched about "typical French things" don't seem to apply here. Except for food. Food is basically a religion in this country!
I went to France as a student. My program was in Pont-Aven, and I loved the French Family I stayed with. I was in Paris for 5 days, too. If an American smiles and makes a small effort to speak some French, the people of Paris are very friendly. But I was advised to not make a lot of noise, smile, speak French when I could, and I would enjoy my visit. And I did. But it is true, Paris is Paris, just like LA or New York are not like the rest of America. I loved your vlog.

I got married this year and we had sort of a honeymoon in France, both in the country and Paris. :) It's the same here in Finland, a lot of people like to think it's Helsinki vs. the country. I'm from the country but I live in Helsinki, so I sometimes feel I'm hated everywhere. :D
Je ne sais pas où Oliver a fait son tour de France mais j'ai l'impression qu'il décrit uniquement la campagne profonde des petits villages de 300 habitants perdus dans les champs et montagnes car si vous allez à Lyon, Nantes, Lille, Bordeaux etc... il y a aussi des gens habillés fashion, des transports bondés en heure de pointe avec des gens stressés, des bars branchés conceptuels ouvert jusqu'à pas d'heures , des soirées en rooftops, des clubs avec des dj internationaux passant de la techno minimale, des galeries d'arts et events hype et des étrangers (Erasmus et migrants) qui font que la France des villes n'est pas si différente de Paris (hormis une densité de personnes dans les rues moindre, et une mentalité moins fermée, agressive et stressante, des rues plus propres et des transports plus moderne et mieux entretenue, et aussi peut-être moins de crimes). En revanche oui on s'en fout de ce qui se passe à Paris :p

Living in Paris for now 30 years, I notice that the way people choose their clothes depends of the distance from the axe « Champs-Elysées - Rue de Rivoli » . When you move 1 km from this axe, the apparence change. 3 km it is another one. I know that it is an approximation, but if you select only people working in these areas, it seems to be more realistic.
What I don't like about Parisians is that they tend to denigrate the rest of the population with words like campagnars or paysans living only with cows. These stereotypes don't help to be in good agreement. So it's normal that there is a war of stereotypes.
Oui mais bon les Parisiens s'en prennent plein la tr... aussi, et puis beaucoup de Parisiens ont des origines provinciales. Exemple, ma famille vient de Charente-Maritime, montée à Paris après la guerre, toujours attachée à ses racines charentaises, ma mère est revenue en Charente-Maritime récemment et elle trouve que c'est pas facile (lenteur, pas réactifs etc..) mais elle est charentaise quand même dans l'âme, c'est donc un peu schizo tout ça. Moi j'en ai entendu des commentaires désobligeants par rapport aux parisiens, donc c'est dans les 2 sens. C'est normal, c'est partout comme ça.
Oui après je n'ai pas dit tous les parisiens. Et bien sûr aujourd'hui c'est de savoir qui est de l'oeuf ou de la poule. Mais bon déjà rien que le mot province, ça isole Paris et le reste de la France. L'origine du mot ça vient de l'empire romain où les provinces étaient les régions soumisent à Rome. Aujourd'hui en France ce mot sonne comme si toutes régions hors Paris ou l'île de France sont en quelques sortes inférieurs. Quand on voit que la France est hyper centralisé sur Paris. Après oui il y a beaucoup de personnes qui ne sont pas d'originaires de Paris mais c'est justement ceux qui n'ont connus que Paris qui peuvent avoir des discours péjorative sur l'ensemble des régions sous le nom de province.
héhé, les chinois qui font leur europa tour en une semaine, ils font paris une matinée, et les châteaux de la loire l'après-midi et rebelote le lendemain avec l'angleterre ...

La détestation des parisiens est le plus solide ciment unifiant les français. (Même les parisiens ne s'aiment pas entre eux). En même temps, les rivalités régionales peuvent être assez gratinées aussi : bretons vs normands, basques contre béarnais, alsaciens et lorrains, marseillais vs aixois vs toulonnais vs niçois... Et des aquitains qui aiment les bordelais, c'est super-rare !! Bon, tout ça, c'est un peu pour rire... Common dislike of parisians is a strong unifying factor of whole France (even parisians dislike each others) Local rivalries and dislikes existe though...

Mes grands parents maternels sont nés à Nantes et se considéraient Bretons : la Loire Atlantique faisait encore partie de la Bretagne. Ce n'est qu'à la fin de leur adolescence, au coeur des tourments de la guerre, que les "Pays de la Loire" ont vu le jour.
It is probably my first or second comment ever on UA-cam. I am French and yes, I avoid going to Paris. I live in Tokyo so it's definitely not because it is too busy that I don't like it. Parisians are mean towards people not living in the capital. They despise us, mock us and treat us like complete idiots. The "Bobos" are simply arrogant; Also, Paris smells. However, many people are great, but usually come from other regions. To tourists : don't waste your precious time in a city where coffee costs you an arm and a leg ! Visit Annecy, Avignon, Carcassonne, Brest, Concarneau...
One of the first things my French friend told me was "France is not Paris." Foreigners only know Paris and equate whatever they know of the city to the rest of the country. Personally, I am not impressed by Paris. When I first visited the city eons ago, the first thing I noticed was how bad the city smells and how dirty it was - that coming from someone who's lived half of her life in a third-world country in Asia! I was horrified by how filthy the train stations were - there's dog poop everywhere, it smells of pee everywhere, drunken men begging, etc. Also, the people are generally aloof, distant and cold (some even rude - intentionally bumping me despite seeing how heavily pregnant I was, for example). So inasmuch as my husband loves the city and would love to visit it every year, (we live in Germany) I plan ahead and book other towns, cities or islands in Spain or Italy instead.

The interesting point in France is that it is at the crossroad of all european climates and landscapes. A mix of California, New-England, Appalachian, Viriginia, Rocky Mountains in a nutshell (1,000 km by 500 km) So there is a strong contrast between Paris, a metropolis, and Province with smaller cities. But also between regions, with strong influence of different cultures: celtic (Britanny), belgian/flemish (North), germanic (Alsace, Lorraine), latine (Languedoc, Provence), etc... Not forgetting the very distinctive Corsican and Basque cultures. All with differing accents, traditions and state of mind, united by the common language and history.. The very heart of France being the Auvergne Mountain, Loire valley and Parisian region. But the surrounding will totally change within a few hundreds miles.
It would be interesting to get a native's opinion on how they look at different regions of France...like southerners are warmer, easier going then northerners or Parisians are more open and educated than the countryside.
Capitals are not representative of all the country. Duh... It's the same everywhere. I'm so tired of those "debates". There's good and bad in every places. The only problem of Paris is that it's too dense so it makes people tense. But that's the same in every big cities.
I think Paris is quite friendly if you speak to them.... but Ive had some weird experiences with strange men grabbing us on the metro LOL....but my french friends dont consider it being 'Paris' because of the multicultural.... other parts of france where i've lived in tiny rural villages they have been like 'look there is that English' Elle est Anglais and they generally have been quite rude to us especially as its a tight knitted town full of farmers lol.... so pretty much talk of the town.... Annecy and the Alps- Georgeous and lots of great festivals, the west coast- Love it by the sea!!! Haven't been south end yet!

When someone says they come from Paris or they have to live in Paris we're all like "wow such bad luck, I couldn't do it!!! :o" And I must add something a lot of us find annoying about parisians : some of them act like Paris is France, that's really frustrating. Like if you're listening everyday to your favorite radio station, and everyday they talk about the great things you should see (concert, museum, theatre,...), and it's always in Paris è_é (when there are so many things happening all around France)
Yes, it's strange how many provincials will say they're turned off by Paris, and one very common remark they make is that Paris is a bustling city and Parisians are too busy to take their time with the pleasures of life, and friends. My reply is always, "Paris is a world capital and we have lots of visitors from around the world to interest and educate us; you can't expect Parisians to act as if they live in a country hamlet. Le reste de la "Province" se limite aux histoires au coin du feu et utilise des pigeons voyageurs pour communiquer. Ca va, tu n'as pas trop l'impression d'exagérer ? Alors oui, bien sûr, l'offre culturelle parisienne est imbattable, tant en quantité qu'en diversité comparé au reste de la France. Mais ça ne veut pas dire que rien ne se passe ailleurs, hein... J'ai vécu 23 ans en proche banlieue parisienne et j'en suis parti pour Nantes. Pour RIEN au monde je ne ferais machine arrière. Toute l'offre culturelle imaginable ne suffira pas à me faire oublier mon clapier à lapin payé au prix fort, mes trajets en transports en commun bondés interminables, le coût général de la vie ahurissant, les foules agressives, le manque cruel de verdure (on a vite fait le tour du bois de Boulogne ou du parc des Buttes Chaumont...), le niveau de délinquance affolant, la saleté repoussante des rues, etc. Je reviens de temps en temps avec plaisir y passer des week-end mais ça me suffit. Tout le monde n'est pas fait pour tolérer au quotidien ce que charrie invariablement les grandes métropoles européennes.
@@kreiontresadenn5633 Chacun a son expérience à lui, j'ai vécu 6 ans à Chartres et j'ai bien aimé ; mais je vis depuis dans la banlieue parisienne et j'apprécie mieux la proximité d'une grande ville. Il faut dire que, du point de vue de tous les inconvénients que vous citez, mon point de départ dans la vie c'était New York, et à coté, Paris est une ville bien relaxe, la population amicale, et même propre. J'ai aussi fait des voyages en province, beaucoup en Bretagne, le midi et la Corse, Dijon, Annecy, les Pyrénées, le Midi. En somme, je suis d'accord que Paris n'est pas la France, il faudrait être aveugle de dire le contraire; mais je ne regrette pas mes années ni à Chartres ni à New York et suis bien content de vivre dans la région parisienne.

It's normal for the original people not knowing how to appreciate their own. It's always the outsider found out the ugly, the good and the best. I'm more inspired to live in France.
I would say in general, if you can speak some French, then yes, outside of Paris you will perceive the French as open when VISITING. Living is different and compared to the two southern neighbors (Spain and Italy), most would consider them to not be open or warm.
What you’re describing is more a reflection of large cosmopolitan busy town versus small towns. Spend a bit of time in NYC and elsewhere in the US, and you’ll feel the same differences and anathema brought to bear on the large US city.

I don't understand why people are so offended tbh. This video gave me an insight on why people in Paris act the way they do - which is the same with any other person that lives in a country's capital. Capitals tend to be busy so you would likely see very reserved, busy and sometimes snobby people there. It's quite...normal(?) If you want nicer response then be nice to them, if they still act rude then maybe they're having a bad day, right? You never know what's going in their life, lay off a bit. No need to generalise ^_^
Carcassonne est très sympa à visiter. Les monuments du moyen-âge sont nombreux et bien entretenus en France. Dans le même genre il y a l’iconique Mont St Michel (beaucoup de monde mais l’endroit est magique). Il y a aussi le château de Guédelon qui lui est particulièrement intéressant car c’est un château fort en chantier depuis les années 90, qui est entièrement construit avec les techniques du moyen-âge. Je conseille vivement.
Je suis né et j'ai grandi en banlieue parisienne, dans une petite ville tranquille avec une maison et jardin. Pour le reste de la France je suis un parisien, et pour les parisiens je ne suis qu'un banlieusard. En vérité, la vie à Paris est vraiment spécifique et incomparable avec la banlieue parisienne. Un vrai parisien a plus en commun avec quelqu'un qui vit en plein coeur de Bordeaux ou Lyon qu'avec une personne comme moi.

Comme tout bon français, je suis un peu (beaucoup😁) chauvin... et fier de mon pays, probablement un des plus beau au monde pour peu qu’on le découvre dans son entier et non pas en se contentant de Paris. Effectivement, Paris... et bien, c’est Paris. Je dirais que la ville est très jolie, pleine d’histoire, de lieux insolites... Mais... les parisiens... Et bien disons qu’il y a une mentalité typiquement parisienne... Et elle n’est pas réellement représentative de ce que sont les français. J’ai vécu tout près de Paris pendant 27 ans, avant de m’installer à Orléans. La vie y est bien plus agréable, les gens plus détendus, plus accueillants. Une région à visiter, avec les châteaux de la Loire... Le sud de la France est aussi une région magnifique. Mais là aussi, on pense souvent à Marseille... qui est un peu le Paris du sud... Alors qu’à quelques kilomètres, on peut visiter Cassis, Borme les mimosas, Hyeres... Des villes bien plus jolies et où les gens sont extrêmement agréables. Bref, merci de décrire ma France telle qu’elle est réellement, et les français tels qu’ils sont... avec nos qualités et... nos defauts😁 Mentalité complexe s’il en est... mais une fois apprivoisés, nous savons recevoir et aimons aire découvrir notre si beau pays. @@fuffmarie6709 mostly because of the weather (it’s very London like weather), the long and tedious commute, cleanliness and safety if you’re not right in the most expensive areas, the strikes, and the people (I don’t blame them, life’s hard in Paris). So when you’re a tourist, you usually visit in summertime when it’s sunny, you don’t have long commutes to go to work and you visit the most beautiful areas. You can’t really see what the life really is as a tourist. It’s one of the best cities, just not to live in. We actually moved back to France 9 months ago, but on the Mediterranean coast. The quality of life is excellent!
I'm from Marseille, born and raised, and honestly i always do my best to avoid Paris. Everytime i have to go there i'm so unconfortable, i feel i'm on an alien planet. but more generally there are historically two main areas, regions of "langue d'oc" (south) and of "langue d'oil" (north). and everytime i go in regions "langue d'oil" i'm in a different country.
Love your video as usual I'm not that surprised that the French dislike or is not exactly like Paris even though I've never been there. I kind of assumed this to be possible simply through the lense of my own country. Foreigners most often visit, and by extension assume it's like this throughout America, places that American's have mixed feelings of or are generally split on. For example, the states/regions foreigners visit will be California & Florida, maybe New York. Specific cities foreigners visit are Los Angeles (LA) in California, Hollywood in California, Las Vegas in Nevada, Orlando in Florida and New York in New York. If a foreigner asked me what cities they should consider visiting, those would be at the bottom of my list. Plenty of Americans don't care for New York or Florida for various reasons but I wouldn't put these at the top simply because they are more tourist traps and focusing on them doesn't give a sense of the diverse cultures within the United States. Though of those California is a good pick, you can go to Hollywood or LA if you want but I'd sooner recommend San Diego and San Francisco in as far as cities in California. Las Vegas, American or not, I would never go there, seems fun but it's a shady city and over 70% of the people you will see there are foreign & native tourists rather than locals. If those things aren't what you have in mind visiting America, you may want to skip on Las Vegas. But if you decide to go and decide to gamble a bit, keep a strict limit on that since it's addictive & stick to card games since odds of winning are less in the favor of the house and your chances of winning depend on how good you are at cards and if you even play the same card games we do. The only thing I disagree is the fact that he oppose Paris and the countryside. Province is not only countryside but also big cities like Lyon, Marseille, Toulouse where we are not like Parisians but still urban.
I can't speak for everyone in the states, but whenever I come across someone from NYC or LA, I could care less, in the same way many French feel about people from Paris. I don't mean I don't like them, it's just, I'm not going to fawn over the fact that they're from one of those cities. I think NYC is a beautiful city with lovely museums and culture, but just like the rest of the world has this very romanticized view of Paris, I would say the same goes for Americans in New York-people around the world LOVE NYC, we're not indifferent but we don't have that hyped up image in our heads.
It's funny. I'm from New York state, but I'm at the opposite end in Buffalo, about an 8 hour car ride. The two are completely different worlds. There are many here who love going to NYC, but there are plenty who could care less and many who actually quite despise NYC. Personally, I love visiting. I love the energy of big cities. But understandably it's not to everyone's liking. I've also been to LA, the weather is nice, but I couldn't live there. Needing a car to do just about anything is not for me. I quite prefer NoCal more tbh. Especially around Santa Cruz and Monterey. Absolutely stunning.
Also, once when I was in Paris I was staying at this tiny little hotel and after a couple days, I saw this couple who was also staying there and who were obviously and no doubt French, but they were so out of their element in Paris. A little awkward and uncomfortable, even though they were totally French. That's when I realized not all French are Parisian
I found the same in United Kingdom. London is so different from the rest of UK, despite some clichés. I know some English people living in the countryside, not wanting to have anything to do with Londoners.

I found your video to be absolutely correct. Paris is not France any more than New York is the US. And I found the Parisians to be perfectly warm and charming IF you make even a small effort to say "Bonjour." The rest of France, as you say, is "achingly beautiful" and the people could not be more friendly and welcoming. IMHO, the secret for a tourist/traveler is very simple - act like the guest that you are. Respect their ways and you will be drowned in good will and great experiences. Going back again this year and Carcasonne is on the list! Thank you both for sharing!
I have only been to Paris and France once. Even in that short time, I noticed quite a difference between Paris and "provincial" France. The people were much friendlier outside of Paris. Of course in the United States, you would notice a difference between people in New York City and Colorado where I am from. New Yorkers tend to be abrupt and Coloradoans are casual and easy going.
Love this video! I live in the country in south western France with my husband. Being Canadian, I heard all the stereotypes of France and once I arrived here was very taken aback that it was not at all what the rest of the world envisions. Then we went to Paris for a weekend and there it was! Lol. It’s sad that the rest of the world think that the capital city represents all of a country. But that’s the way it is with every country I suppose. That’s what the world sees when in reality, any country is so much more diverse than just their capital city.

Is Marseille France? Is Corsica France? Paris is France just as much as the other regions. But I understand it's irritating that Paris takes so much pride, while every region of France is absolutely gorgeous, sometimes every village.
It's fair to say that Paris is stressful, busy, uncomfortable. But there is sometimes the hate of the parisiens involved, for political reasons (corsica), for sports reasons (Marseille).
Many people living in the country side express their personal feelings instead of a neutral opinion. As a parisien, I admit there the vast majority of journalists and politicians live in Paris, and they dominate the medias. This caste is considered as "bobos", living in rich areas, they enjoy the good side of globalism, but they tell others how to behave, how to live, how to spend, how to vote. And this is a massive problem because this caste does not know France well. Yet, many parisiens travel a lot and do know France well, they are just not on TV shows, radios, or in the parliament as much. This small elite is the reason of the hate but don't represents the parisiens in the majority, to my mind.
Bien résumé. Les médias sont totalement déconnectés de la réalité de la France et attisent la haine. En effet, la mondialisation ne profite qu'aux plus riches. C'est pour ça qu'il faut plus de protectionnisme et de souverainisme. Il faut sortir de cette UE néolibérale dont on nous a imposé un traité qu'on avait refusé par référendum en 2005.

Le Paris de la mode, de la « grande » culture, de l’« intellectualisme »… ne concerne réellement qu’un nombre TRÈS limité de Parisiens. Dès que l’on s’éloigne un peu des quartiers centraux prestigieux dont ne sortent jamais ces gens-là (à part peut-être pour aller prendre un vol à CDG !), on trouve des Parisiens pas si différents des provinciaux, bien plus attachés à leur environnement immédiat (« le quartier ») qu’au reste de la capitale… Et dans les quartiers excentrés et non touristiques, les non-Parisiens ne sont pas snobés par la population locale !
Je suis né et j'ai grandis á Paris dans un quartier populaire qui n'éxiste plus. Exproprié dans les années 80 de mon 15 ème arrondissement, les logements insalubres aux loyers bloqués on été rasés et remplacés par des lofts pour bourgeois et retraités aisés sur fond de spéculations immobilières forcennée. Les vrais parisiens, en particulier, ceux des classes populaires, se trouvent au dela, du périphérique, en banlieue.

Les "provinciaux" ne sont pas tous les mêmes ! Certains provinciaux ressemblent aux Parisiens des quartiers centraux, et d'autres non. Les Parisiens qui snobent n'ont rien pour snober les autres, c'est pour ça que c'est ridicule. Tout le monde sait qu'ils n'ont aucune raison d'être meilleurs. C'est pour ça qu'ils paraissent peu cultivés, enfermés entre leurs murs, etc. Ils croient représenter la France sans la connaitre. Je ne parle pas de tous les Parisiens, mais de la partie "moins cultivée que la moyenne mais qui croit l'être plus" de la France.
J'ai l'impression que ces incultes pensent qu'en dehors de Paris, c'est la campagne. Alors que des villes comme Lyon par exemple n'ont rien à envier à Paris en tant que ville. Aucun rapport avec la campagne.
Ce que devraient savoir certains, c'est que Paris n'est qu'une grande ville en France parmi d'autres. Rien de plus. En dehors de Paris, on a d'autres grandes villes comparables à Paris sur de nombreux aspects (histoire, culture, gastronomie, etc.).

Salut, Rosie, First, I just want to say I’m sad that you left France but I’m happy for you because of all the new opportunities you have ahead of you back in your homeland. Your videos have been so helpful and fun for my own trip to France.
The trip described in this video is very similar to what I’m doing this summer. I’m taking three months and traveling slowly in a heart-shape path except I’m going clockwise and added some places outside France, partially because of my family’s heritage there. Those were Brussels and the typical day trips, Luxembourg City, and an overnight in Turin.
Right now I’m in Aix-en-Provence. So much of what you’ve said in your videos is on the mark. I would add that the Nice area seems much happier with a much lighter attitude. That could possibly be attributed to their temperate climate and being on the sea.
So glad I booked some time in Carcassonne! Anyway, my trip is about half done. It’s been going by fast and has been amazing.

A big yes to Carcassonne. I have a close friend who retired in SW France. I house (and chicken) sat for him in 2017, then went to Carcassonne after he got back from his trip. I stayed inside the Carcassonne Cité for 2 nights, which I HIGHLY recommend. Don't go in summer, it would be ghastly with crowds. I went in mid-October, just fabulous. Carcassonne is a must, lots of history and amazing reconstruction of the entire Cité. Many cafes and shops, plus the winding pedestrian "streets." Ahhhh. A car would be a liability, walk everywhere - both in the Cité and in the Bastide (newer town below, nearer the train station).
Also married a Frenchman this year :) Congrats to you both. And I grew up in the Charente and people used to think I was really fancy just because I would wear a skirt lol

A little tip if you want to see Carcassonne but don’t have the time to go all the way there: the little medieval town of Provins is very easy to reach from Paris (80 minutes by train, covered by the pass Navigo) and looks absolutely gorgeous. It’s a great day trip from Paris.

As someone from a concrete jungle like Hong Kong, I definitely prefer the countryside and the villages in France. Went to France twice and Lyon twice, also Dijon, Beaune, Tournon-sur-Rhône, Montpellier, etc. Loved it. We only stayed in Paris for 2 nights and that’s enough for me. Regret did not have the time to go to the Loire Valley, Alsace and the rest..........
I lived in Montpellier for four months and visited Paris. I am a fluent French speaker, and personally found Parisians much more friendly than people from the south. Maybe it was just my experience. I am looking forward to returning to France!

I moved to Toulouse 6 months ago and I've already been to Carcassonne twice - it's amazing! The newer part of the city outside of the walls is beautiful too.
I definitely found a lot of videos I watched about "typical French things" don't seem to apply here. Except for food. Food is basically a religion in this country!
I went to France as a student. My program was in Pont-Aven, and I loved the French Family I stayed with. I was in Paris for 5 days, too. If an American smiles and makes a small effort to speak some French, the people of Paris are very friendly. But I was advised to not make a lot of noise, smile, speak French when I could, and I would enjoy my visit. And I did.
But it is true, Paris is Paris, just like LA or New York are not like the rest of America.

I got married this year and we had sort of a honeymoon in France, both in the country and Paris. :) It's the same here in Finland, a lot of people like to think it's Helsinki vs. the country. I'm from the country but I live in Helsinki, so I sometimes feel I'm hated everywhere. :D
Je ne sais pas où Oliver a fait son tour de France mais j'ai l'impression qu'il décrit uniquement la campagne profonde des petits villages de 300 habitants perdus dans les champs et montagnes car si vous allez à Lyon, Nantes, Lille, Bordeaux etc... il y a aussi des gens habillés fashion, des transports bondés en heure de pointe avec des gens stressés, des bars branchés conceptuels ouvert jusqu'à pas d'heures , des soirées en rooftops, des clubs avec des dj internationaux passant de la techno minimale, des galeries d'arts et events hype et des étrangers (Erasmus et migrants) qui font que la France des villes n'est pas si différente de Paris (hormis une densité de personnes dans les rues moindre, et une mentalité moins fermée, agressive et stressante, des rues plus propres et des transports plus moderne et mieux entretenue, et aussi peut-être moins de crimes). En revanche oui on s'en fout de ce qui se passe à Paris :p

Living in Paris for now 30 years, I notice that the way people choose their clothes depends of the distance from the axe « Champs-Elysées - Rue de Rivoli » . When you move 1 km from this axe, the apparence change. 3 km it is another one.
I know that it is an approximation, but if you select only people working in these areas, it seems to be more realistic.
What I don't like about Parisians is that they tend to denigrate the rest of the population with words like campagnars or paysans living only with cows. These stereotypes don't help to be in good agreement. So it's normal that there is a war of stereotypes.

Mais bon déjà rien que le mot province, ça isole Paris et le reste de la France. L'origine du mot ça vient de l'empire romain où les provinces étaient les régions soumisent à Rome. Aujourd'hui en France ce mot sonne comme si toutes régions hors Paris ou l'île de France sont en quelques sortes inférieurs. Quand on voit que la France est hyper centralisé sur Paris. Après oui il y a beaucoup de personnes qui ne sont pas d'originaires de Paris mais c'est justement ceux qui n'ont connus que Paris qui peuvent avoir des discours péjorative sur l'ensemble des régions sous le nom de province.

It is probably my first or second comment ever on UA-cam. I am French and yes, I avoid going to Paris. I live in Tokyo so it's definitely not because it is too busy that I don't like it. Parisians are mean towards people not living in the capital. They despise us, mock us and treat us like complete idiots. The "Bobos" are simply arrogant; Also, Paris smells. However, many people are great, but usually come from other regions. To tourists : don't waste your precious time in a city where coffee costs you an arm and a leg ! Visit Annecy, Avignon, Carcassonne, Brest, Concarneau...
One of the first things my French friend told me was "France is not Paris." Foreigners only know Paris and equate whatever they know of the city to the rest of the country. Personally, I am not impressed by Paris. When I first visited the city eons ago, the first thing I noticed was how bad the city smells and how dirty it was - that coming from someone who's lived half of her life in a third-world country in Asia! I was horrified by how filthy the train stations were - there's dog poop everywhere, it smells of pee everywhere, drunken men begging, etc. Also, the people are generally aloof, distant and cold (some even rude - intentionally bumping me despite seeing how heavily pregnant I was, for example). So inasmuch as my husband loves the city and would love to visit it every year, (we live in Germany) I plan ahead and book other towns, cities or islands in Spain or Italy instead.

The interesting point in France is that it is at the crossroad of all european climates and landscapes. A mix of California, New-England, Appalachian, Viriginia, Rocky Mountains in a nutshell (1,000 km by 500 km)
So there is a strong contrast between Paris, a metropolis, and Province with smaller cities. But also between regions, with strong influence of different cultures: celtic (Britanny), belgian/flemish (North), germanic (Alsace, Lorraine), latine (Languedoc, Provence), etc... Not forgetting the very distinctive Corsican and Basque cultures. All with differing accents, traditions and state of mind, united by the common language and history..
The very heart of France being the Auvergne Mountain, Loire valley and Parisian region. But the surrounding will totally change within a few hundreds miles.

Capitals are not representative of all the country. Duh... It's the same everywhere. I'm so tired of those "debates". There's good and bad in every places. The only problem of Paris is that it's too dense so it makes people tense. But that's the same in every big cities.
I think Paris is quite friendly if you speak to them.... but Ive had some weird experiences with strange men grabbing us on the metro LOL....but my french friends dont consider it being 'Paris' because of the multicultural.... other parts of france where i've lived in tiny rural villages they have been like 'look there is that English' Elle est Anglais and they generally have been quite rude to us especially as its a tight knitted town full of farmers lol.... so pretty much talk of the town.... Annecy and the Alps- Georgeous and lots of great festivals, the west coast- Love it by the sea!!! Haven't been south end yet!

Like if you're listening everyday to your favorite radio station, and everyday they talk about the great things you should see (concert, museum, theatre,...), and it's always in Paris è_é (when there are so many things happening all around France)
Yes, it's strange how many provincials will say they're turned off by Paris, and one very common remark they make is that Paris is a bustling city and Parisians are too busy to take their time with the pleasures of life, and friends. My reply is always, "Paris is a world capital and we have lots of visitors from around the world to interest and educate us; you can't expect Parisians to act as if they live in a country hamlet. And then, we have the Opera, the museums and lots of movies and restaurants to amuse us, as you don't." That makes the provincials think a bit, and they really don't have any reply. I ask them if they've ever been to Paris, and a surprising number of them say "no" - they're going on what their neighbors and communities say.
Oui bien sûr... il n'y a pas d'opéras, de théâtres ou de cinémas ailleurs qu'à Paris, c'est bien connu. Le reste de la "Province" se limite aux histoires au coin du feu et utilise des pigeons voyageurs pour communiquer. Ca va, tu n'as pas trop l'impression d'exagérer ? Alors oui, bien sûr, l'offre culturelle parisienne est imbattable, tant en quantité qu'en diversité comparé au reste de la France. Mais ça ne veut pas dire que rien ne se passe ailleurs, hein... J'ai vécu 23 ans en proche banlieue parisienne et j'en suis parti pour Nantes. Pour RIEN au monde je ne ferais machine arrière. Toute l'offre culturelle imaginable ne suffira pas à me faire oublier mon clapier à lapin payé au prix fort, mes trajets en transports en commun bondés interminables, le coût général de la vie ahurissant, les foules agressives, le manque cruel de verdure (on a vite fait le tour du bois de Boulogne ou du parc des Buttes Chaumont...), le niveau de délinquance affolant, la saleté repoussante des rues, etc. Je reviens de temps en temps avec plaisir y passer des week-end mais ça me suffit. Tout le monde n'est pas fait pour tolérer au quotidien ce que charrie invariablement les grandes métropoles européennes.
@@kreiontresadenn5633 Chacun a son expérience à lui, j'ai vécu 6 ans à Chartres et j'ai bien aimé ; mais je vis depuis dans la banlieue parisienne et j'apprécie mieux la proximité d'une grande ville. Il faut dire que, du point de vue de tous les inconvénients que vous citez, mon point de départ dans la vie c'était New York, et à coté, Paris est une ville bien relaxe, la population amicale, et même propre. J'ai aussi fait des voyages en province, beaucoup en Bretagne, le midi et la Corse, Dijon, Annecy, les Pyrénées, le Midi. En somme, je suis d'accord que Paris n'est pas la France, il faudrait être aveugle de dire le contraire; mais je ne regrette pas mes années ni à Chartres ni à New York et suis bien content de vivre dans la région parisienne.

I would say in general, if you can speak some French, then yes, outside of Paris you will perceive the French as open when VISITING. Living is different and compared to the two southern neighbors (Spain and Italy), most would consider them to not be open or warm.
What you’re describing is more a reflection of large cosmopolitan busy town versus small towns. Spend a bit of time in NYC and elsewhere in the US, and you’ll feel the same differences and anathema brought to bear on the large US city.

I don't understand why people are so offended tbh. This video gave me an insight on why people in Paris act the way they do - which is the same with any other person that lives in a country's capital. Capitals tend to be busy so you would likely see very reserved, busy and sometimes snobby people there. It's quite...normal(?) If you want nicer response then be nice to them, if they still act rude then maybe they're having a bad day, right? You never know what's going in their life, lay off a bit. No need to generalise ^_^

Carcassonne est très sympa à visiter. Les monuments du moyen-âge sont nombreux et bien entretenus en France. Dans le même genre il y a l’iconique Mont St Michel (beaucoup de monde mais l’endroit est magique). Il y a aussi le château de Guédelon qui lui est particulièrement intéressant car c’est un château fort en chantier depuis les années 90, qui est entièrement construit avec les techniques du moyen-âge. Je conseille vivement.

Je suis né et j'ai grandi en banlieue parisienne, dans une petite ville tranquille avec une maison et jardin. Pour le reste de la France je suis un parisien, et pour les parisiens je ne suis qu'un banlieusard. En vérité, la vie à Paris est vraiment spécifique et incomparable avec la banlieue parisienne. Un vrai parisien a plus en commun avec quelqu'un qui vit en plein coeur de Bordeaux ou Lyon qu'avec une personne comme moi.

Comme tout bon français, je suis un peu (beaucoup😁) chauvin... et fier de mon pays, probablement un des plus beau au monde pour peu qu’on le découvre dans son entier et non pas en se contentant de Paris.

J’ai vécu tout près de Paris pendant 27 ans, avant de m’installer à Orléans. La vie y est bien plus agréable, les gens plus détendus, plus accueillants.
Une région à visiter, avec les châteaux de la Loire...
Le sud de la France est aussi une région magnifique. Mais là aussi, on pense souvent à Marseille... qui est un peu le Paris du sud...
Alors qu’à quelques kilomètres, on peut visiter Cassis, Borme les mimosas, Hyeres... Des villes bien plus jolies et où les gens sont extrêmement agréables.
Bref, merci de décrire ma France telle qu’elle est réellement, et les français tels qu’ils sont... avec nos qualités et... nos defauts😁
Mentalité complexe s’il en est... mais une fois apprivoisés, nous savons recevoir et aimons aire découvrir notre si beau pays.

@@fuffmarie6709 mostly because of the weather (it’s very London like weather), the long and tedious commute, cleanliness and safety if you’re not right in the most expensive areas, the strikes, and the people (I don’t blame them, life’s hard in Paris). So when you’re a tourist, you usually visit in summertime when it’s sunny, you don’t have long commutes to go to work and you visit the most beautiful areas. You can’t really see what the life really is as a tourist. It’s one of the best cities, just not to live in.
We actually moved back to France 9 months ago, but on the Mediterranean coast. The quality of life is excellent!
I'm from Marseille, born and raised, and honestly i always do my best to avoid Paris. Everytime i have to go there i'm so unconfortable, i feel i'm on an alien planet. but more generally there are historically two main areas, regions of "langue d'oc" (south) and of "langue d'oil" (north). and everytime i go in regions "langue d'oil" i'm in a different country.
For me lyon is the prettiest city in France, Annecy is beautiful sure but it's way too small to compete with lyon, Bordeaux,Strasbourg etc..
Kind of like what we say about the city of Atlanta in the State of Georgia in the U.S.. There's "Atlanta", then there's the rest of Georgia"!

Love your video as usual I'm not that surprised that the French dislike or is not exactly like Paris even though I've never been there. I kind of assumed this to be possible simply through the lense of my own country. Foreigners most often visit, and by extension assume it's like this throughout America, places that American's have mixed feelings of or are generally split on. For example, the states/regions foreigners visit will be California & Florida, maybe New York. Specific cities foreigners visit are Los Angeles (LA) in California, Hollywood in California, Las Vegas in Nevada, Orlando in Florida and New York in New York. If a foreigner asked me what cities they should consider visiting, those would be at the bottom of my list. Plenty of Americans don't care for New York or Florida for various reasons but I wouldn't put these at the top simply because they are more tourist traps and focusing on them doesn't give a sense of the diverse cultures within the United States. Though of those California is a good pick, you can go to Hollywood or LA if you want but I'd sooner recommend San Diego and San Francisco in as far as cities in California. Las Vegas, American or not, I would never go there, seems fun but it's a shady city and over 70% of the people you will see there are foreign & native tourists rather than locals. If those things aren't what you have in mind visiting America, you may want to skip on Las Vegas. But if you decide to go and decide to gamble a bit, keep a strict limit on that since it's addictive & stick to card games since odds of winning are less in the favor of the house and your chances of winning depend on how good you are at cards and if you even play the same card games we do.
