Poor overlooked and underrated killifish. They even get overlooked on the list of overlooked fish. There are over 1,000 species, and a lot of them are not that hard to find. Most are not difficult to keep and are beautiful and diverse. Most can be kept in the proper community fish setup, I do it.

Hillstream loaches are wonderful. I couldn't catch two in an aquarium I intended to neglect, so I left them in. 6 months later with only water top ups, they haven't died or get sick. They decided to breed. So now I have small ones. (Not so small actually, like 1/3 of adult size).

Cherry barbs are incredibly overlooked! I have them in my 60 gallon community tank. They’re active but not nippy, and the males are a deep red color. Not orange or orange-red, like most community fish that are called “red” I mean RED. With the black sand substrate and the black background, and live plants from top to bottom, they look amazing- especially when I dim the lighting. Watching them swim in the tank when the lighting is dim looks so dramatic and it’s so peaceful. If you’ve avoided them because they are so common, or just never tried them, give them a shot. And if possible, fill the tank with lots of dark green plants, keep them on a dark substrate and dark background so their color really pops, and get a light that’s either dimmable or just not very bright, and you’ll have an absolutely gorgeous tank that’s fun to watch and very relaxing to enjoy.

I think you're underselling the Common (single-tail) Goldfish. Shubunkin Goldfish are as pretty as Koi, but don't grow as large, which makes them ideal for many garden ponds and larger tanks.
Giant Danios are a great peaceful schooling fish. They're less aggressive than Zebra Danios. Their only downside is that they need more space than smaller species.

I love my paradise fish, Pablo. He’s prolly the most interactive fish I’ve ever kept. He investigates every pant or rock I put in his tank, naps on everything, throws tantrums when I do water changes, and reacts to the world outside his tank. We like to listen to music or watch UA-cam together. He looks through the glass at the screen, so I suppose he’s watching too. :) Also, they’re eyes move around a lot, so they end up looking very expressive. They’re just fun fish. Just don’t let them near cherry shrimp no matter how densely you’ve planted the tank.

The tank is about 5 inches in diameter and 15 inchs tall with a small carbon and sponge filter powerhead venturi blasting a vertical stream of bubbles and water down the wall. And (shock horror) I do 66% water changes once every 6 -8 weeks (filter/water/bubble flow dependant). I have a short video of them and tank on my channel if anyone doesn't believe me. The problem with otos is they are very sensitive to water quality AND lack of food. If they're wild caught, they tend to die faster than expected because they will not eat and by the time they get to where they are and there's plenty of food, they starve to death anyway because their bodies can't acclimate fast enough for them to start eating again. Captive bred ones are out there and much hardier than their wild caught cousins.

Might sound strange, but Denison Barbs are actually quite obscure to lot of people - Only expert, competent fishkeepers seem to know what they are looking to, expecially because they are one of those fish which in the reatailer's tanks don't look at their best (Congo Tetras and Rainbowfish seem to suffer this fate, too).
Rainbow Shiners also are an overlooked species, again not helped by the fact they tend to be drab in the overstocked fish shop tanks.

Back in September we got 5 feeder common goldfish. The last one survived 2 days. We decided to make her part of family. Like others we put her in a small jar. When she gasped for air got her into a 20 gallon and picked up a tank mate. After doing research realized goldfish can get pretty big. So far they re thriving and have 4 mystery snails and hornwort, Java fern, African fern, and a few low lying plants to improve their lives. I just started watching this channel learning about cycling and testing parameters. Thanks.

Good ideas!! I’ve had 2 Reticulated Hillstream Loaches at separate times and both were not good algae eaters and very aggressive, especially to the Cory Cats at the bottom. I even suspect that 2 Cory’s and a young Bristlenose Pleco were killed by them.

Most if not all of them get over looked in Wisconsin are because the price. People here don't wanna spend that much. An thats because most of the people buying the fish an tanks are beginners an don't want to put a ton into fish if they don't like it. The aquarium heads in this state is a small group of people. We already have had or bread these fish.

If you get Sewellia lineolata (Reticulated Hillstream Loach), be aware that they may be wild caught and you have a risk of Parasites and disease on these guys!
Have a Quarantine setup ready! Mine came with anchor and gill worms... had a bad time but they're doing alright now with no losses.
