Love the hardscape and rock work in that tank! Kuhlis are one of my favorites as well. Kudos for keeping a LOT of them. They are much less timid in greater numbers!
My absolute favorite fish, started keeping them in 2003. I had a pair that lived for 13 years. I currently have a group of semicincta and 2 shelfordii.
Thanks so much! Glad you found it helpful. I need to visit New Zealand, that's been at the top of my bucket list destinations for a long long time. Looks like a beautiful country.
@@freshflowaquatics Aotearoa would welcome you any time you feel like visiting. (We are not allowed tropical freshwater shrimp here, constant algae chaos! 😅)
@@marghester That's very interesting. I was looking that up and I guess there's one species of freshwater shrimp native to NZ? I wonder if you could catch some lol. Wow - Aotearoa looks really incredible! I need to start moving my YT channel a lot more so I can afford a trip out there 🤣
This was a really great video! I've been thinking of getting kuhli loaches recently for my shrimp tank but have been worried about whether it'd be enough space-- looks like I'll have to start a tank just for these little guys!
I just picked up 3 that are in mt quarantine tank. Il add them to my tall 75g in a month. I have aquasoil, gravel, sand river , live plants, caves, and rocks. So I hope they like it. There's also a 10" pleco there lol
Sounds like they are going to have an awesome set up when they move into the 75 gallon! They can be a bit timid when it comes to bigger faster moving fish, but I don't think that the pleco will mess with them. That's a nice big tank with lots of plants and caves - sounds perfect!
I’m planning to get Kuhli in a few months, so far I have: Aqueon 20 Gal Tank (24” Long) Aqueon QuietFlow 30 HOB (With extra bio media, active carbon, and a outflow damper) Aqua Natural White Sand Cholla Wood Air Stone Heater Underground tunnel Soon will be getting live plants! My question is how do you treat them for diseases internally and Externally? Since they are scaleless I know they are extremely sensitive to most medication.
Sounds like you got a great setup going for the kuhli loaches. I'm sure they will love it! Is there a specific medical issue you are trying to medicate for?
Do they eat Malaysian Trumpet snails? I just got a 20 gallon off of craigslists and I cleaned everything (tank, filters housing (put new filters in), lights, decorations) including the substrate and it was drained and yet a bunch of trumpet snails survived. lol. I have assassin snails in my other tanks to deal with any rogue bladder snails, but was thinking after I season this new tank I would add Kuhlis to handle the Trumpets. What do you think?
I definitely find a fair bit of small empty snail shells in my tank. I think that once snails reach a medium size the kuhlis will no longer go for them. I think yoyos would probably be a better choice for snail elimination - I still have tons of snails in my kuhli tank. That being said, I love watching my kuhlis ❤️
Question should I feed them once or twice a week they're the only fish one of my tank with cherry shrimps didn't see them eating only the shrimps I saw eating
They can be pretty shy, especially when you first get them. They might only come out to eat at night when the lights are off. I like to feed mine at least a little bit every day, but you could probably be fine with giving them a really solid meal every other day.
What fish food did you gave to your kuhli loach, I feed mine few pellet ,some detritus worm (culture)and boiled carrot but I always saw only cherry shrimps like to eat it and I keep them 10 gallon (3 kuhli loach and cherry shrimps) cause my space limited I had shared apartment with my friend but my kuhli loach look pretty healthy chasing each other at night and they also do it few time in morning but I didn't saw them eating still had left over
@@evergarden3316 Sounds like you are feeding them great stuff. I use some extra flake foods, pellets and small live foods on occasion. It's possible that they just eat at night when you're not looking, especially if they look healthy! I am actually gearing up to start a detritus worm culture too. Are you getting good yields from that?
@@freshflowaquatics yes I had unlimited live food in my crayfish filter at parents house. Because the size of filter (DIY) it's like 15 gallon so when am at home and clean it I don't throw those dirty stuff I put it in container because there lot of blood worm and detritus worm. Question : sand substrate (not fine) underneath is lava rock (small) is good or bad for kuhli loach I got scammed buying online sand they said it's was a fine sand so I going buy fine sand. Thank you replying looking forward to your guides video. (My English is not that good, srry)
I've been looking everywhere but not finding information about this one thing, so I'm asking here since I saw one of yours looking like it; some of my kuhlis have started loosing their colour along their sides, and I can see what I think are their ribs (since they're becoming kind of transparent). What could this be? I'm currently setting up a massive tank to move them into as I'm thinking they might be stressed, but I'm not seeing any weird behaviour. Are they just getting into very tight spots all the time and wriggling themselves free is wearing on their sides? I do have a log in there which turned out to be partially hollow, I'm thinking the inside could be hurting them? But they have no wounds, and they've been like this for months now.
I believe those markings are the signs of a healthy waistline 🤣 Most fishes (all animals for that matter) change a little bit in appearance as they get older. I'm pretty sure that what you are talking about is nothing to worry about, it's just how a well fed kuhli loach looks.
I heard they like to escape, is that true? Even if I have a taller 20gallon with floating plants? I can't put a lid on, because I have bigger plants growing out of the top
Yes, great point. I should have mentioned that. I've heard that they like to escape, but I haven't personally dealt with that and I also don't have a lid on my tank. I also make a point of not filling my tank up to the top.
Love the hardscape and rock work in that tank! Kuhlis are one of my favorites as well. Kudos for keeping a LOT of them. They are much less timid in greater numbers!
Thanks so much! Having a large group of them definitely brings them out more.
Thank you for both of the measurements and temperatures (inch and cm, F and C). Good job 🎉
Thanks so much! I always try to put metric in, it's a lot more helpful for 99% of the world!
My absolute favorite fish, started keeping them in 2003. I had a pair that lived for 13 years. I currently have a group of semicincta and 2 shelfordii.
They are such fun fish! I had to look up the shelfordii, super cool! Where did you come across them?
@12:00
Old school AF, but I had Kuhli Loaches breeding under my undergravel filter!!
That's so awesome! Lol I've seen kuhlis end up in all sorts of places but never heard of them breeding under an under gravel, so cool!
Great video! Thank you. I loved the part where the shrimp was trying to get in on the wafer too. ha!
Thanks so much! Love the handle BTW 🐱. Lol, the kuhlis are so peaceful, they could brush the shrimp out of the way but they usually just tolerate them
This is one of the most thorough and knowledgeable fish keeping clips I've viewed.
Nice job, from New Zealand 😊

Glad you feel inspired to go get some Kuhlis - I have fond childhood memories of them too. Such fun fish. Thanks for dropping a line.
Cool footage under the leaves!

So much fun to watch!
Love ur voice

my Koolie loaches 😢

@@freshflowaquatics Oh phew, then I can relax! And maybe reduce how much food I give them 😂
My tank has 1-2mm of gravel on the bottom. It doesn't look sharp. Will Kuhli loaches be fine on gravel?
That shouldn't be a problem at all!

I have three of them in a tall 20g tank but i never see them there not active
Sometimes when you get more of them they are more confident and come out. Or if you throw some leaves along the bottom it can kind of lure them out.
Thank you for telling me to steep leaves, no one says how to sink them
No problem, glad it helped. Thanks for dropping a comment!
