    If there was a moment when the British woke up to Olympic cycling it was probably in the summer of 1992 when Chris Boardman won the first cycling Olympic gold medal for his nation in 72 years.

    he did what is basically unheard of in the event. you start at one side they start the other and one person catches up a bit by the end of the race making them the faster time. but to over take someone? just wow... he gained on him that much he was able to get ahead and over the line

    Brings back great memories for us lovers of all things Lotus. And yes, although foreign owned for many years, Lotus Engineering ARE British based, at Hethel in Norfolk. They even put Chris on the bike in a wind tunnel to hone the aerodynamics - the monocoque frame and wheels are tuned to achieve forward thrust like a sail round the track (calculations suggested this was worth around 8 seconds over 4000m) and designed the teardrop helmet.

    Mike Burrows lives in the same village as me and can be seen riding past my house on one of his streamliners, my brother in law was on the project team that build the 108 at Lotus Engineering. Broadman was a great cyclist but the the bike was a massive improvement over anything the British or anyone else had ever though of or had.. It was the catalyst with lottery funding to see the chain that has led to the British dominating track cycling in the past few years..

      He destroyed the competition in 1996 world championships, when everyone was on the same type of bikes - proving he was by far the best. However, put Boardman on the aluminium bike, and his opponent on the carbon fibre bike, and Boardman would lose. There is just massive difference between materials, both aerodynamically and weight

    The original design was Burrows', it was changed quite a bit once Lotus got involved. Both do get credit though so I see no problem.
    It's similar to BAE Systems being involved in ice skates, they obviously don't design the skates but their engineering and knowledge of materials make the difference.
    Nonetheless the Lotus 108 was an impressive bike, and this is an impressive race.

    • @johnnywoodbine9092
      @johnnywoodbine9092 2 роки тому +1

      Yes and no, on the road a disc on the rear has little effect on handling in a cross wind, like you'll feel it through the bike but it's rarely going to cause much issue. A disc on the front though in the same wind is a nightmare, it works like a ships sail and tries to push and or pull (depending on the angle the wind hits it) the front wheel around its steering axis in unpredictable ways resulting in dangerous handling. That's the reason you'll only see front discs used on indoor velodromes where wind isn't an issue. Tri spoke and deep section wheels, again on the rear makes no difference but on the front with a much smaller surface area on the side compared to a solid disc they dont really suffer much from cross winds or atlest not enough to make them dangerous

If i were to upgrade, do you recommend getting a set of deep dish or deep for rear, tri for front?
      bonus question. i know the most drag in cycling is our body, but what gives the most positive aero impact between aero wheels and aero frame?

    Boardman destroyed the competition in 1996 world championships, when everyone was on the same type of bikes - proving he was by far the best. However, put Boardman on the aluminium bike, and his opponent on the carbon fibre bike, and Boardman would lose this race. There is just massive difference between materials - both aerodynamically and in weight
