- We finish up the servicing of a pair of Cummins marine turbo charged engine aftercoolers. Often neglected, aftercoolers need to be cleaned every 3-5 years to maintain engine performance.
I always use Teflon tape and pipe sealer. They go in easy and come off easy and they never leak. Do not worry about electrical concuctivity as almost all of the parts will be in contact and the anti leak stuff will only fill in the gaps to prevent leakage.
Great video, thanks. Since the zincs use tapered thread, you can use a narrow strip of teflon tape to seal while the rest of the thread will touch the inside firmly to make electrical contact.

As someone else stated, a ultrasonic cleaner would've made short work on this project. With all the other things you've made, i think you could make yourself a big cleaner with half a dozen ultrasonic motors and a heater. I own a decent size one but nothing big enough to do those.
For pressure testing fill with water first then squeeze up with air water is more viscous and will not leak on the taper thread
I think you should wind teflon tape around the thread of the Brass Part.
The zinc anode needs to be in electrical contact with the housing to inhibit corrosion. Teflon tape would reduce the electrical contact.
Frank, maybe you could invest in an ultrasonic tank to clean parts like you coolers . Just a thought....
That would be a large tank, but yes, that's a good idea.
Thank you for the video! With Salt water here in the North East ( Long Island Great South bay) how often should you replace the cores inside the aftercoolers?
If you service them every 3 or 4 years, they should last a long time, perhaps indefinitely. Replace them when they fail the pressure test (are leaking). I had to replace mine when I bought the boat in 2012, so those were 14 years old at the time and failed a pressure test during my refit. Service history on them was unknown and probably neglected for most of that time. Hold on to your wallet if you ever need new cores. sbmar.com is a good source.

I have to think those taper pipe threads on the new zinc were not correctly threaded. They should fit into the female threads further and that will provide more contact area thread to thread and then not leak. I'm guessing that whoever assembled the zinc sourced cheap fittings.
I couldn't be sure from the video but the new zincs looked more like parallel threads to me, but I imagine Frank knows what he's doing!
@@mikeb1 so true! Frank's skills are amazing. But all of us have failed to see something we should have, sometimes it's the most obvious, but we still over look an issue.
Hi, Mike, they are tapered threads, but they are what I'd call oversize--that is they don't screw into the hole very far, or as far as I'd like. I suspect this is done to make sure they don't bottom out in any tapered pipe thread hole that might be out there--thus preventing them from being water tight. So they are manufactured on the high side of the thread dimension allowance. I could tap the holes more, but they work fine as is.
What type of air compressor you are using for you razorweld 45 plasma cutter?
It's a 5 hp Ingersoll Rand, with a 60 gallon tank. There are some videos on the channel that discuss the set up, the aftercooler, air dryer, etc.

I watched the entire video even though I'm rebuilding an 8.3 in a skoolie, not a boat. I always say there's no such thing as too much knowledge.
Key to owning a boat; to be wealthy enough to have someone do it for you...get my drift?
You could say the same thing about a house, a pool, a race car, a pulling tractor, your health, etc. etc. It's a matter of interest as much as money. You hire out the jobs of lesser interest, or certain skills, and chose the particular tasks you are interested in to work on yourself. A boat is no different.

If you have a question about your zincs being grounded just use a good ohm meter between the zinc cap and the engine. it should be 0 ohms.
I run my aftercooler tube stacks in the dish washer a couple of cycles. They come out rinsed and dry
I didn't see a washer under the head of the new cap screw?
