Lovely video thanks for sharing.
Glad you enjoyed it
I live in southern AZ with the opposite problem. I need to put the orchids in pots so they retain enough moisture even with a humidifier running. I have 2 mounted phals but they are in a lot of sphagnum moss. I have a vanda seedling in small/ medium bark and one that's a few years from blooming size that sits in a terracotta orchid pot on a layer of sphagnum moss to try and increase the humidity around the roots. My pots have a lot of aeration, so they dry out within a few days. The only similarity between our climates is "winter," it's been in the 60s and 70s which is a welcome relief from the summer that didn't leave until the end of October.
I have a lot in clay pots but none I have learned that none can stay in loss in Miami or they rot really quickly. lol
Sharing your story about your Mom, Grandmother, and Stepfather has given a deeper and more loving meaning to your closing "Keep it Green"!
🙏🏼Thank you. 💚
I love this guy very nice heart goid mindset .Sir i love you more shows
my tip about winter feeding, you can feed monthly like Nelson says, if you feed the right amount you can feed all year long. Most of my catts are growing lots atm, my phals are spiking, my angreacums and cymbidiums are flowering so yeah I keep the feed steady all year. Now my zygopetalums for example they are drinking so little at the moment because of this they are absorbing less fertilizer as a result. Everyone has different approaches. You can get away with not feeding them for 2 years straight. If you water less and feed less you are just feeding exponentially less than just reducing the water + the feed. I basically have two buckets at all time: one is full strength (1/2tsp/gallon MSU equivalent) and the other is half that strength. I use the half strength for any that are not actively growing roots, seedlings and any that are not growing. I use full strength for the rest. All year long. But this is just a bit of a personal preference and won't make much difference how you do it, a little rest is best in winter if you want to let the plant use up residual salts in the pot. One thing you might come across is a conspiracy theory to make orchid growers not do as well. Ie that bloom boosters are detrimental to use with orchids. If you are ever unsure about an orchid "fact" just check the advice on any other non orchid plant. When it comes to fertilizer no matter what some self proclaimed experts claim what works for one plant will work for another plant (there are literally just a handful of exceptions that should be ignored not taken as the rule of thumb) I mean yes blueberries need far more acidic soil that other limestone rock growing plants and there are differences but what we know about other plants is highly beneficial to growing orchids too. That knowledge should not be dismissed and often vegetable growers know far more about fertilizing properly than orchid growers do. Ah but orchids are low feeders. Nope, not even. They are in fact moderate feeders. For reference a low feed is half a high feed and a medium feed is between. So a medium feed is only 25% weaker than a strong feed. Or another way to look at it is that 100ppm N is strong feed, fast growers, 75ppm is orchids, 50ppm is seedlings. Most feed orchids far too conservatively which works but it is a conservative amount. But you should always start with a conservative amount. It's just something for you to be aware of in future. Like Nelson said you have to be willing to experiment to eventually find what works best. If you don't try, you will never improve. So back to my point, bloom boosters are hugely beneficial just don't ever overdo it. Bloom boosters come in all different strengths and if used incorrectly will just burn the roots as with any fertilizer. But if used correctly to never be more concentrated than your regular feed then a bloom booster helps to keep fusarium away, it gives orchids a resistance to colder nights in winter so they rot less easily, and as the name suggest if used correctly can boost blooms. What bloom boosters will not do which many hope they will and thus conclude they do not work is that they will not cause a plant to flower just by using it. It doesn't work that way. But anyway that is a long rabbit hole for you to explore. Just be awre some growers will advise things that might not even be helpful. So be wary of growers that tell you how not to do things, that is one thing I have learnt. The newbies pretending to be experts will tell you "never use hydrogen peroxide" "never cut this" "never do this" "they cannot be grown this way" - yeah avoid those growers advice. Listen to the growers that say "this is how it is done" this is what has worked for me". Great visit. Glad you finally got to see Nelsons and taking us with you. Really enjoyed the visit. Thanks.
Thanks so much Tom, glad you enjoyed it. I watched videos by a gentleman cales Rick L. I think he was a vegetable grower. He had so much knowledge that it was incredible. Sadly he doesn’t post anymore. 😞. He was a natural teacher. Kinda like you. I love experimenting and I try to prepare myself to the reality that some won’t make it but at least I’ll learn something along the way. I didn’t know all that about the fertilizer so thank you for sharing that with me. 😃
Here in Brisbane Qld. we can have days of heavy rain around this time of year so I cover my shade house & do water therapy. The orchids thrive when I control the watering. Less rot problems & the young plants need water more often. Fabulous orchid collection Nelson!
I definitely need to cover before the next rainy season. Thanks
By the way your placed and plants are beautiful
Melissa, I loved your awesome home visit at Nelson's. It was so much fun and so informative. I especially loved your comment that smelling orchids can put you in a good mood and it's great for mental health. That is so true and observant of you. I think if more people smelled orchids the world would be a better place. You are truly passionate about orchids and it reflects in your lovely personality.
