TRANSCRIPT:
Question: What is Jamaica like today?
Ziggy Marley: Well, Jamaica right now, it’s… the politics don’t play such an important part in terms of violence anymore, you know, it’s not so much about the politics. I think now it’s more about, you know, different gangs, you know, whatever.
People just try to make some money and that’s where the violence comes in. But otherwise on that, I left Jamaica a little bit and I went back home and I keep going back. Still the vibe in Jamaica is a vibe that can’t beat still, you know what I’m saying? Especially in the country, you know? In the city, not so much but once you leave the city, there’s something there that’s nowhere else, you know?
Question: How has the country changed?
Ziggy Marley: It’s different, it’s much different. We have a lot more outside influence in Jamaica now in terms of cable TV and, you know, the different types of… you know, the Burger Kings and the McDonald’s and stuff like that. So the culture is kind of diluted and I believe that a lot of the traditions have been lost. When I was growing up, there were a lot of traditional events that we would see or take part in, now, it’s much less.
You know, and us… so when I was growing up with my father, the consciousness and there was a movement for change, there was a rebellious nature but rebellious in a positive way, but now it’s a rebellious nature but in a kind of negative way. But I think, it’s the same with the younger generation, I see that now all the world, you know? The kids are not as disciplined, not as respectful of things, you know, it’s just… the way the world is changing and what the young people are looking up to, you know, they’re looking up to the materialistic, the bling and the blang and all that type of stuff, it’s happening everywhere so Jamaica is no different, you know what? Again, I say, there’s still greatness there in Jamaica that you know the vibe… there’s something there that’s still great, that those things will never overshadow, the negative will never overshadow the positive things of Jamaica.
Question: How do you communicate Jamaica to your listeners?
Ziggy Marley: I mean, I do have ideas to kind of find some way to keep the younger generation in tuned with their past in Jamaica ‘cause as a musician, there’s something on my mind that I want the younger youths to know about, the generation of musicians that were before even me. And somewhat… they don’t… I’m telling you right now, they don’t even know some of the greats who led the way. I mean, you know, my father is a popular icon and they know him but there are others that who’s in this generation that I don’t think they even understand who they are and where the music is coming from. So that’s another… that’s another kind of… another purpose that I would like to get involved with… involved with making music.
It’s had nothing to do with that on this record, it’s a children’s record, you know, it’s called “Family Time.” There’s a song on it that I did called “Hold 'Em Joe” which was the first song I ever did on stage and it was a part of what I was telling your before, it was part of our cultural event where we learned Jamaican folk songs and I remember that this is the first song I ever sung so… and it was a… it’s a song about a donkey and stuff like that so I think it was appropriate for a kid’s record. But it’s something like that that is missing and I would like to do more to… so I can keep the culture and let the kids know the history and make the music alive, you know?
Question: What was it like working with Paul Simon?
Ziggy Marley: Yeah, with Paul, I didn’t… we weren’t in the studio together but it was kind of unexpected in the way that he got involved in the record ‘cause I wasn’t thinking of him, I wasn’t… I wasn’t even thinking that it was possible, it’s Paul Simon, you know? His… I love him but I think he was way above my, you know, whatever, my grade or whatever you want to call it. So I wasn’t thinking of...

So glad I happened onto this interview with Ziggy. I have a genuine respect for him and his finally-realized philosophy of life, based on love. His consciousness and awareness of learning from experiences and landing in a place, a mindset, a “vibe” of peace, unity and love is not only refreshing but pure and good.
Perfectly said. 😱

I LOVE YOU BOB DAMIAN JULIAN STEPHAN ETC. ALL OF YOU IM YOUR BIGGEST FANS YOU SHOULD SEE MY ROOM ITS FULL OF YALL
I have listened to Zizzy Marley several times doing interviewing, about his father, and he has done very well as a little boy when his father died. The reason why the reggae music is not doing so well again, because most of the legendary singers left Jamaica a very long time , and some of them died.Like his father and many more, John Holt, Peter Toosh,Alton Ellis, Prince Buster, Dennis Brown, Delroy Wilson, Larry Marshall ,Justin Hinds, so you does not have the quality singers there anymore. The more younger generation up coming singers, they left Jamaica living in foreign countries, saying that they are running away from violence.I have been to few a countries, and saw a couple of them struggling in life.Because of certain circumstances, they cannot make life in some of those countries.I been around a very long time before Zizzy Marley was born, and know how the system ran in Jamaica. What I really observed that is only a few Jamaican musicians can servives in the USA, because reggae music is not really accepted in the USA more than the ordinary. It is more accepted in Africa,Asia, also most European countries more than our own continent North America.Which we were born and grew up, they are calling us Caribbean people,we are not.Jamaica is only 550 miles from the united States, that is to show you how close we are on the same continent. But for some reason there is too much stigma against Jamaican people, from the united States, and we are all Americans people together.I don't know where this type of behaviour came from against our music,we appreciate their music. But the majority of the people in the united States does not embraced the reggae music, for what reason.Because they does not respected our culture, most of the people who really appreciated the reggae music, those people have some connections from Jamaica, and the rest of the region.I been living in the united States over 25 years, and with all the clubhouses in been to.The only reggae music I ever heard is Shaggy, Bombastic,I didn't know he was from Jamaica at the time. But none of the united States clubhouses I goes to, i never heard a reggae music unless they are owned, and operated by Jamaican. That is to tell you that reggae music is not getting nowhere in the united States at all, with most reggae singers leaving Jamaica to live in the united States, their music is not going anywhere unless they have international tours. From most of the older generation musicians left Jamaica you hardly heard anything of them,it seems like they lost their insperation to sing or wrote reggae music anymore. Is when I looked up some for some of those singers on the internet, which I knew from the 1960s,/70s Or.When I further heard the news on the radio that they have passed away, for years you heard nothing about those musicians and. When they were living in Jamaica so often you would heard,a new song on a regular basis.Something is wrong with our older generation musicians, they left the reggae to the mercy at nobody to guide, and protected it.
ziggy your awesome. A gr8 loving human ur a real inspiration.
still some people touch the unlike really ?? you need your own world
Thank you, Ziggy..
I love this interview!
That Smile :)
Yes i also see the universe as in Mother Nature and Father Universe.
The wise man speaks
Keep up the good work ziggy jah bless
No Generation has EVER understood, which is obvious as this generation is simply the product of what came before - but I applaud his efforts and positivity, and those among the younger generation that are listening are the ones that make his work matter. How can you watch this interview and come up with nothing but negativity? (this is coming from a often negative person)
Raymond Groot mo
Ziggy is wise man he is a massager, he really philosopher.
As I said I understand using marijuana is a question of faith for some and it's OK. Like you said you're free to do whatever you want.
12:15 "That still divides people, I don't want to divide people."
thank you!!
I have mass respect for this man. Such [not so] common sense.
love is the root :-) love u brother, love u all
I love you sir🇮🇳
genius
Da bling and da Blang.
love the interview ziggy....great stuff love ya
He's a copy of his father! So great to see!
Mr. Marley, My organization would like to learn how we can help you.
ජැමේකාවට අපි ආදරෙයි.
ලංකා.
Wise man. When one man becomes wise he leaves behind all this kind of things like religion that only divide us. Rastafarian is only one more religion. And Ziggy do well putting religion apart and spending his lifetime in spiritual growing.
mental evolushan... we are created to evolve
he looks just like his dad damn
I'd just like to comment on part 2 of your comment => I agree on peoples right to decide matters for themselves. I have no problem with people consuming marijuana one way or another. The part where I somewhat disagree however lies in the point where 'the people' fall under collective health care plans, expect the same treatment as their neighbors - yet take no responsibility for their own health - that is unfair and selfish. This is more relevant for hard drugs that work more on your system ofc.
Ziggy is the deepest seed, planted by Bob.
I agree with Ziggy on everything except marihuana. Everything else is great about him except that.
That's Rasta brother
he's very beautiful.
Love is my Religion.......... ♠♠♠
Wise man
💚💛❤💯
Unfortunately I agree with the general opinion that it's harmful and should be kept with illegal status. I do not support drugs but I do support Ziggy. I agree with the Marleys on everything except marijuana but I do understand that smoking it is part of their religion and culture. I did hear what Ziggy said about love being his religion and so on but still. I love his music and most of his philosophy.
I'm 46 and everything has changed
Most definitely, and his brothers..
you are MARLEY
Couldn't you squeeze another 10 ads on to this video? Bambaklats!
the two people that have disliked are deaf
ZIGGY YOU ARE THE BEST AND SIMPLY GOD BLESSED! YOU ALWAYS. HAVE GOOD THOUGHTS AND FRESH NEW IDEAS TGAT THE WORLD NEEDS AND YOUR SMILE IS SO SWEET AND GENUINE IT MAKES ME SMILE AND PUT JOY I MY ❤.HEART. YOU ARE YOUNG AND YET SO WISE. YOUR FATHER'S LEGACY. THE WORLD LOVES YOU AND GOD IS VERY PLEASED WITH ALL YOU ARE DOING FOR THE WORLD.I HOPE TO MEET YOU SOMEDAY BEFORE I DIE. I HAVE SO MUCH RESPECT FOR YOUR STRENTH OF CHARACTER
The reason the death rate is higher is because there are a lot less people, so it makes it look worse
do you realize how much you look like Bob
Barking mad.
you will never make the new generation understand
only 1 dislike :)
Yah Ziggy you talk of Hemp. Thank You this is so true.
