Change my NEW insulin pump with me

  • I’m a few weeks into being on an insulin pump and it really feels like an entirely new world for me.
People sometimes equate an insulin pump with being a “bad” diabetic, but THE BEST I’ve ever felt in my 8 years with diabetes has been the three weeks since I started my Omnipod.
I didn’t realize just how much time I was losing to thinking about diabetes everyday, and how much control I really needed to give up. It has made a world of difference for me that I did not imagine was possible.
And it makes the original fears and anxiety I had about this feel really…dumb lol.
It’s frankly weird to wake up without feeling anxiety about checking my numbers.
It’s weird to work all day long and think “oh I’m probably high and need to correct!” And then I look at my CGM and the pump has done the work really well for me.
I’m noticing better absorption because I can use sites on the other side of my body that I don’t have the dexterity to reach.
Has it all been perfect? Nah! I’ve imploded a pod by getting sunscreen on it. I’ve had fears that I might run out of insulin on a flight, and not be able to turn off the Omnipod scream before it alarms other passengers.
But for all of these small things, the big things are what’s exciting to me. I’m excited to see what my next A1C is going to be. I’m happy that my overnight hyperglycemia is solved. Waking up less thirsty and less groggy has been ridiculously satisfying.
I’m really glad I pushed for myself, and that I didn’t take no for an answer. I’m annoyed at the barriers that almost kept me from getting a pump. But, the system isn’t perfect, and that’s why patients have to use the autonomy we do have to advocate for our needs.

Hello , you are looking great ! I have a few questions if I may ask ? What was your a1c when first diagnosed ? What it it NIW ? And glucose numbers ? Did you try the keto diet ?

I was first diagnosed with an A1C of 11%, and blood sugar of 323 mg/dL. I did originally try Keto when I was misdiagnosed with type 2. While it helped with weight loss, it didn't help with my blood sugars. Ultimately, I was re-diagnosed with Type 1 after testing positive for antibodies. I needed to be on insulin.
