Thank you for wonderful memories,my husband and I were there 1968-1970 most of us were newly married, my husband drove the mess truck for Sg.Bare, they were out in the field a lot and guarding that fence line looking the enemy face to face, we were all young and grew up a lot,but had some good times also.

Thank you for your time and effort in putting this together. I, too, would like to go back for a visit to the area and drive across "that border". We all did good work and the results showed what we can do, if we want. Stationed with K Troop, 3/llth from 1982-86, had many trips to our outposts as well as the training in Grafenwoehr, Wilflacken and REFORGER traiing exercises. Truly felt their was a purpose.

@@yabbadabba1975 Thanks, after I got the ball rolling with the help of Thomas Schossow of Bad Hersfeld others joined in helping a lot making my dream come true. Now the Germans are watching over it for us.

My (Dutch) grandfather lived here for several years. He was the director of the Dutch Tourist Agency VVV in Hessen if I remember correctly.
I visited Bad Hersfeld in the early 80's with my parents. Still planning to go back there with my kids.

FYI: I removed my original video 'Tribute Bad Hersfeld, Germany Now & Then' due to issues with Music Copyright Laws etc. At this time there is no way to replace UA-cam's video music with my music. The only way to replace their music with my music is to upload the video again with my soundtrack/music.
The following post are from my original 'Tribute Bad Hersfeld, Germany Now & Then video':
haufe0129 months ago - Many thanks for your Video. I was born and raised in Bad Hersfeld and its good to see, that people like you have taken our City in their Heart. Thanks :)
Recon One 5 years ago - Thanks Bannanna70, Re: 8:35 wait till you see the 2009 ;) ... thedeitz . com
Recon One 6 years reply to POZ48 - Please don't let me be misunderstood. But who said change is good :( I was hoping things would be like they were in 1968, same guesthouses, people etc. On a positive note I did make new friends and had a great time. We are looking forward to returning. PS: I had trouble choosing a song for this clip. Several songs were rejected via YT due to copyright.
Neon Sandbox 1 year ago - Great video Gator! Thanks for the memories. Lived off-base at Klaustor. (76-77) A few of us climbed over the wall of the Stifsruine, even got up into the tower. Seeing the Lullus statue also brought back memories of the Lullusfest, great fun!
Jim Voelkl 2 years ago reply to Recon One - The one I witnessed was sometime between when I arrived in W.Germany in Jan 73 and when I left in 75. My parents, who are/were both WWII vets, were given a commander's tour that included our Concern in Bad Hersfeld and later, Graf. The accident occurred the evening they arrived there and their tour was altered.
lima33ful 3 years ago - man oh man that was beautiful....brings back a lot of memories...thank you
Recon One 2 years ago reply to nachhause6 -@nachhause6... I never meet the right German girl. When I left Germany I did not leave a sweetheart behind (keine Frau Freund hinter sich gelassen) only friends.
Immelmann3690 5 years ago - Sehr schönes Video. Vielen Dank. :-)
Jim Voelkl 2 years ago - Even drove the Battery's Commander around in his jeep. That was a great job because you would get to use the officer's facilities while out on maneuvers when the rest of the guys froze their asses off in the field. Wife worked in laundromat until she quit because she didn't take orders from anyone. Diviorced in 1981. The girls in Bad Hersfeld were a bit chilly toward the G..Is, however, the girls out in the smaller towns we patrolled were much friendlier.
Recon One 2 years ago reply to Jim Voelkl - Reference the turret explosions, I know of one in Graf in 1967-68. I have a photo of that one. Is that the one you are speaking of. Wish I could find a list of name for our casualties.
Recon One 2 years ago reply to Jim Voelkl - advn2rs thanks for your input .. BTW If you haven't already, come visit us at our Facebook Group - 3rd Recon Squadron 14th & 11th Armored Cavalry - and or my web page - thedeitz.com -
Jim Voelkl 2 years ago - Drove a VW bug I bought for $100. Bought a second for $25 and stripped it down and entered the races on a grass track the locals had built for motorcycle races down in a large open field. After six months as a mechanic I applied for the newly-opened job as supply clerk and the real fun began. Got to drive to the laundry facility in Frankfurt and other supply runs all over the area.
Recon One 1 year ago reply to Neon Sandbox - Thanks, 2005 was my first trip back. I was a little disappointed when I visited our Kaserne. Nothing their indicating that we were once there. As soon as I got home I started working on a Cold War Monument for us with the help of Thomas Schossow and Renate Stiber. In 2009 I returned for our monument dedication, making new German friends at that time.
Jim Voelkl 2 years ago - Sp4 Jim Voelkl, Track Veh Mechanic/Supply Clerk, Howizter Battery, 3rd Sp, 11th ACR. 1/73 - 4/75. Lived on base 6 months then went home, brought back my wife, Debbie, and lived "on the economy" in a 300 s/f downstairs apt below the owners, just down the steps across the street from the main gate. Soon rented a brand new house where the owners lived upstairs and we had the downstairs apt on Strawberry Hill.

POZ48 6 years ago - Nothing stays the same, does it. The brats still look good. Some great then and now photos. Excellent job.
Thomas Brooks 3 years ago - Really enjoyed. I was a dependent in Bad hersfeld 1967-1970 and went to the Elementary school up to Grade 6. Hoping to find some of those things still there.
Recon One 3 years ago reply to Thomas Brooks -@thom4sure Thanks for your post. Have you heard about the dependent reunion? The following was posted on my Facebook: "Our Hersfeld/ Fulda reunion is just around the corner now. It's kids and parents that lived in Hersfeld or Fulda or went to Frankfurt with any of us during the 70s. I can't wait to see everyone. Thanks Gaither for this site because some of us reconnected here." Tina Odenbaugh. ... If you haven't check out my YT Bad Hersfeld, Germany Revisited 2009 Tribute ...

nachhause6 2 years ago reply to Recon One -@theDeitz That was so good. I am from Bad hersfeld and had pretty much nothing but hardship here, I loved that u remember my city so well and good. Great job I enjoyed seeing it and knowing that i just wasn't fortunate to have met the right guy back in my time....
Recon One 2 years ago reply to Jim Voelkl - thanks for the info.

mstrgnrA8 4 years ago - I trp 3/11 77-80. Sgt Mclain (GSR) picked me up at the banhof one cold ass nite in a duce and half. Never forget the time I had there or the guys I was stationed with. And the "GOOD" times. Reforger, Wildflicken, Graf &Hohenfels And Border duty. My first year we were in the field 235 days. Your film mad me real nostalgic.. thanks
Jim Voelkl 2 years ago - One afternoon, while in civies and walking around Bad HErsfeld, one old lady spit on one of our group. We blew it off and kept walking. I will never forget that, except I learned their level of liking Americans depended on how old the local was. I'm guessing she was the widow of one of the casualties of WWII. We had our share of casualties during the Cold War period, too. Road accidents, turret explosions, lost extremities, and much more.
Recon One 5 years ago reply to Immelmann3690 - Bitte sehr, Dies war eine großartige Zeit in meinem Leben :-) thedeitz . com
