Hi good technique, my worry is that, data might be misplaced. I.E if I have a date 01/12/2012 and another date format 1/13/2012, when splitting I run the risk of concluding 12 is day and 13 is day and then 01 and 1 is month, however the first date month is 12 and the second date month 1. So I believe using locale is a better option here. Correct me if I am wrong. Thanks.
Nice, logic and simple technique Sam. This is what I used to do ... until I discovered Locale. It’s doing the same thing in fewer steps but what you’ve shown is easier when you really need to understand the steps in a debugging scenario.
Guys very help full , maybe exist another way more direct BUT this works proporley many thanks
Hi Daniel, glad you found this video helpful! If you haven't yet, you can subscribe to our channel to see all our upcoming Power BI and Power Platform video tutorials and announcements. Cheers!
now you can do the same thing by:
- rightclicking the column
- change type and using locale...
- choose the current date format
for example to switch from 1/7/2020 to 07.01.2020 requires to choose English (United States)
Waaay faster and less stress :) very similar to text to column in excel.
Man this is such a huge help, thanks for being so concise and straight to the point

Glad it helped!
I did an additional step, because my data contains DATE + HOUR. I Split again (based in space delimitator), excluded the Hour, than I mescled Day+mounth+Year.
You did an Amazing Explication! Thank you so much!

Hi, I have the exact same issue but it’s still giving me issues. It’s accepting the values that are applicable for mmddyyyy format like 02/02/2021 but not 23/02/2021 as it’s expecting mmddyyyy format and I want ddmmyyyy
Hello Mpumelelo,
Thank you for posting your query onto our channel. We really appreciate you taking your valuable time to post.
Well, so once it's being converted into the date format within Power Query irrespective of it i.e. whether it's DD/MM/YYYY or MM/DD/YYYY. Once it's converted into the Power Query, just close that window and come to the Power BI interface side and from there you can change the date format as per your requirement.

Hi, My case Direct Query connecting mode to PBI, Date format is in January/2022, However need to Change Jan/2022. Pls suggest me
Hello Viswanath Reddy,
Thank you for posting your query onto our channel. We really appreciate you taking your valuable time to post it.
In the case of Direct Query, data is not visible inside Power BI and therefore, all these changes needs to be done at a datasource level.

You could just convert the column with the localization date type instead the standard date type. Then, no errors.
Yeah. that was my first thought. That column was not actually mixed with DDMMYY & MMDDYY.
thank you SOOOO much for this!!!!!!
What if your headers are formatted like 1/1/2022, 1/1/2022 and you want all the dates in one column and then want dates like January, Feb. How can you achieve this?
Hi Michelle,
Thank you for posting your query onto our channel. We really appreciate you taking your valuable time to post it.
In that case, you can unpivot those rows and convert them into a single column and then using column from examples just start typing January where date is 1/1/2022 (dd-mm-yyyy) and February where date is 1/2/2022 (dd-mm-yyyy) and it'll create a new column with the expected output.

How do you turn your Production Year field from whole # to Date (YYYY)? This is what I can't figure out.
Hello Kelly,
Thank you for posting your query onto our channel. We really appreciate you taking your valuable time to post.
Well, firstly you cannot change any whole number into a date format. And even if, you want to convert the "Production Year" field into a date format than you can insert the prefix before the year so that it gets into a date format.

Simply right click on the date column and select Change Type/Using Locale
This is 100% what I needed. Awful US dates. It was so frustrating because my system wouldn't even accept that these COULD be dates.
