    ... I'm Dutch and thanks to this video, after 28 years of living, I now know that Horeca is a combined word from Hotel Restaurant and Cafe... (Googled it because I was like "...really?")

    I like the diminutive! "Geitje, meisje, beertje, dorpje..." it's good to talk!!! Hahaha... and also the "sch"... "schouder, school, bescherm, schreven, schoenen..."

      @@kyravanmeijl731 mankekar, mooi toch, hoe poetisch nederlands is waarin je allerlij nuances kan aanbrengen in hoe je iets uitdrukt.
      en ja, dit soort dingen zijn regionaal, hier wordt ziekenwagen en ambulance (meer abulans) gebruikt

    In a Boston accent, fart would be pronounced faht. So one of our family's favorite Dutch words was vaatwasmachine (dishwasher). Sounded too much like fart wash machine.

      different language but I'm from the U.S. living in Catalonia. I alway get a kick out of the fact that the way to say that you're fed up with something is "N'estic fart"

    "That's the funniest part when get the chance to practice and to try on the streets to see how far I make it today until you switch to English" haha. Totally, the other day finally I order my coffee and pay without them noticing or at least they didn't switch to English :D

    we call a condom "kapotje" in street language, probably for that very reason

    "Kapot" means "broken", and apparently in France is "condom", but I've actually heard the Dutch word used for that meaning as well! "Kapotje" = "condom", and I agree you don't want those words associated, hahaha

      my original was "kaput", deutsch for stopped/broken/dead.

      I'm originally from the UK and we used "kaput" for broken all the time. I guess English language stole it like a lot of our other words ;)

    I like very much two untranslatable words: “hoor” and “hè”. They sound for me so “gezellig” and very Dutch. At the beginning I have thought that the biggest difficulty in the Dutch language is the correct pronunciation of the “g” sound. But now I think that your Dutch is already quite good when you these two words venture to use.

      Gezellig hoor. Leuk, hè? Meaning: "It's fun and cozy at the same time, according to me." And "Nice, isn't it?"

    I get a chuckle from 'plassen', literally splash or make water, but which can also mean to pee but also to name a small inland body of water as in Nieuwkoop's Plassen

    horeca = hotel + restaurant + café
    That is how you write them in dutch. You pronounce them basically the same way.

    Nu heb ik twee woorden geleerd: "kapot" in het Frans en "kapotje" in het Nederlands. Ik wist geen betekent. Ik leer Frans en Nederlands maar ik heb dit nooit gehoord. Dat was erg grappig. 🤣😂
    Ik vind "doei", "gezellig" en "schattig" grappige woorden. "Je bent lekker" is raar voor mij als het klinkt dat je praat over het eten. Het is een beetje oneerbiedig. 🙄🤭

    Well as Dutchman, watching these videos. I train myself. To keep speaking dutch. To foreigners that try. But it is my blood, to help them if they struggle to find the right words. I'm sorry for the people that want to learn. Switching between, dutch and English, goes almost automatically! And has nothing to do with keeping the language to ourselves. We just try to help

    My favorite Dutch word is 'hottentottententententoonstelling' Which means a display of tents by a people group named the Hottentots. It's never ever used, but to try to break your tongue on it by repeating it as fast as you can for at least 5 times.

      Okay, een beetje vergezocht. Maar toch grappig.

      Jahwohl! My most wtf moment was when the german lady in the store said. 'hier hast du deine ruckgeld.' as ruk means male masturbation in dutch. 😂 Also blasen nobody warned me that it wasnt just blowing on youre hot coffee.

      Only bezem is a Dutch word, the others misspelled or German.

      You probably meant: schatje (notice the short a sound), jongen (short o, not u sound, otherwise it will sound German and the ending n).

    Actually, ‘ gezondheid’ should not be strange to English speaking persons. Americans use the word ‘ gesundheit’ in the same way.
