Yes, the SD40t-2s were really work horses on the 2.2% grades with the coal trains. Most of the Rio Grande engines were PTC equipped with Positive Traction Control specially designed for big time mountain railroading!

Rio Grande never had any SD45 tunnel motors, that was Southern Pacific and Cotton Belt.
