+Bengt Boman I fully agree! Every single tune is nothing else than perfect! And I can not remember another song where between the refrains the composer combined both strophe and refrain melodies! Listen to the male choir singing the refrain melody and Severine singing the strophes with a complete different structure, but perfectly combined! A real masterpiece! And yes, Bengt: This is larger than life... well said!
@@rockie667 I've just realised that, and it really is great songwriting. On a technical aspect, its amazing how the two different melodies work so well together, yet to the unknowing ear, it still sounds so natural! A masterpiece indeed!
Matter and spirit, spirit that is in matter. If spirit becomes whole it is as if (he) it I has won. Than you can see that a bank, a tree and a street had been unrecognised funny opponents. In victorious state we can not be every time and knowing what the victory looks like isn’t enough to achieve it instantly. Others should want it too. Larger then life someone has said for this song. What if life becomes much longer, thirty times, for example. And from time to time it happens. In the mean time it is comforting to know that spirit can govern the matter. Although tree, bank and street are wining every day, for know. Ain’t that funny? When I have written it I have lived several kilometres from Korea moved there from Europe. That country is partly in Europe. Additional dimensions have kept information of that song and in the foreseen moment delivered it.
I'm 30, I wasn't even born when Severine sang this song, but I think this is one of the most beautiful and well deserved winners of Eurovision ever. From Italy
You don't need to speak French to know this is a Belter of a song , sung with such passion and power from a small Lady of immense talent . Saw it live on tv at the time in Eire age 13 , Im so glad I could recognise Talent when I heard it . Thanks for the memories . Best Winner ever .
Im the same, was old 7 and has stayed with me my whole life, it brings back memories of a time that is no more, with my family watching the eurovision.
This song is in my top 3 favourite winners, and probably in my top 10 favourite songs of all time. And I'm only 19, I've known this song since I was little. Lovely wonderful tune.
My 8-year old brother died in a car accident that very evening 3rd April 1971, I was one year younger and was watching Monaco’s Severine win the Song Contest with Spain’s Karina in 2nd place 😪
Oh my gosh. The irony and poignancy of the lyrics in that case. "We all have a bench, a tree, a street On a tous un banc, un arbre, une rue Where we rocked our dreams Où l'on a bercé nos rêves We all have a bench, a tree, a street On a tous un banc, un arbre, une rue Too brief a childhood Une enfance trop brève One day or another you have to leave Un jour ou l'autre il faut partir"
I have the feeling that there is applause in many parts of the song from the audience. If that is true, it would show how powerful the this performance is. At the time, applause in the middle of performance was very rare..
Elle a du coffre la petite blonde ! Chapeau bas Séverine. C'est une des plus belles chansons a avoir remporté le Councours. Mélodie, paroles, et cet insaisible quelque chose qui vous emporte...
The chorus is "Everyone has a bench, a tree or a street, a place where we cradled our dreams, everyone has a bench, a tree or a street, and a childhood that was too short." Greetings from Ireland :-)
For me this is the best Eurovision Winner song ever! A fantastic voice (I like expecially when she sings the low tunes, for example the line "... un avenir, un avenir"... ), great male background choir, perfect musicians in the orchestra (ok, thats quite normal in this contest), an outstanding songwriting and a real passionate performance! The 60s and the 70s have been the decades of the really awesome anthems - in my opinion not to compare with everything afterwards! Songs like the winner songs of Severine, France Gall, Dana or Vicky Leandros are timeless masterpieces!
Yes, Johann, I think this is maybe the best ESC winner ever :) Though I love many others as well, most from the 1970's... (Not a bad song among all the 1970's winners!)
Tonight is Eurovision 2018 and, looking back, I also think this is the best song from when I first heard it in 1971. No song is perfect and the La, La, La at the climax is a sign of the times i.e. the 1968 winner. Generally songs sung in French were successful around that time and a direct translation into the other most popular language of English, "a bench, a tree, a road" wouldn't work. That said, it's still my favourite, far and above those winners from my native UK.
Great tune. When she flings her arms open wide at the end it’s the icing on the cake and a clear winning song. Still got the 7” version in my collection.
i was disappointed that uk entry (JACK IN THE BOX - CLODAGH RODGERS) didnt win but watching this again it certainly deserved to be the winner - nearly 50 years on it still sounds good. i bought both the singles - the last british eurovision entry i bought was in 1982 one step further by BARDOT
There's a little city at far east called Hong Kong, like 30 years ago the biggest TV company started to have "Miss Hong Kong" and they use this song as their theme song- till now.
I think she's saying that we all have a special place, whether it's a park bench, a tree we like to sit under or a street we like to walk down(hence un banc,un arbre, une rue..I imagine the south of France and someone sitting in the shade under a tree along one of those grand boulevards) reminiscing on our childhood with all the dreams we might have had at that time, though maybe those past thoughts may not have prepared us fully for adulthood if our ambitions come true to the exclusion of others.
What a perfect song and a singer. I was starting to listen to the ESC contest in the late 70's, but this song for me was the Holy Grail.. like I said, a really good song..

"A bench, a tree, a street"
We all have a bench, a tree, a street
Where we cherished our dreams
We all have a bench, a tree, a street
A childhood that has been too short
One day or another we have to leave
To build a future, a future
And it's the unforgettable instant
When we return our child clothes, child clothes
Everyone goes, filled with hope
On the road that they chose, that they chose
To the richness or to the glory
Yet what our life will be, our life
We all have a bench, a tree, a street
Where we cherished our dreams
We all have a bench, a tree, a street
A childhood that has been too short
Everyone, in his corner of the horizon
Only defends their ambitions, their ambitions
But if we share nothing
What will be left for us in common, in common?
We all have a bench, a tree, a street
Where we cherished our dreams
We all have a bench, a tree, a street
A childhood that has been too short
Lalala lala...
