A director's main job when actually shooting a given take is working with an actor to get the performance they want. Almost every other immediate responsibility is delegated. If Roth wanted something different, he'd have given her direction to change it. Ultimately, she looks bored because _he_ wanted her to be. _He_ looked at this and said _"yup, that's the one, no notes"._

As a Borderlands fan, I can tell you, this movie does not exist. I haven't seen it, and I plan on never seeing it. As soon as I saw the casting, I was like NOPE, this is going to stink.
First thing a producer should have done is tell the props department to make lots of guns for the actors to use. Tell the writer, each character to be holding a different gun after each action scene. They can change guns after all the action or find it during the action, but they need to changing guns during the movie. Of course like he says, there are other issues, but it's weird when a borderlands movie has a lack of guns.
Getting them to constantly change guns would have been a lot of effort for nothing more than a nod to fans. Even as a fan you'd just acknowledge it and move on. What film adaptations need is a really engaging story that stays true to the source material's tone. A game can get away with a weak story because you are entertained by the gameplay. In a film you have no gameplay so you need a good story to interest you.

My friends got me to go to a showing of Borderlands, and I just knew it was gonna be bad when I saw the reviews; just, I didn't realize it was going to be THAT bad. Spent the better half of a day ranting about how awful it was afterwards, and post traumatic cringe for the rest of the week as a result. I'd never had such a nauseating and powerful physical reaction to cringe before that movie.
The reason Borderlands failed is because a corporate CEO supervised the script about an anti-corporation video game. Randy couldn't bash the thing he is. It is that simple.
That probably explains why there's this trend of humanizing main villains which personally I don't like because there hasn't been a memorable one outside of an IP in close to a decade.

@Dubstepconcept Last of Us, Arcane, Even DOTA Dragon's Blood and Dragon's Dogma were alright. I loved the Castlevania series too. Cyberpunk. Granted, most of them are animated. But yeah... Halo was my biggest let down so far. And it's so sad it'll never get the adaptation it deserves any time soon.

Jack black should have been cast as Marcus. Instead of Krieg, we should have gotten Brick, and Brick should have been played by Dave Bautista. Roland could have been played by either Terry Crews or Michael Jai White. Kevin hart should have been Claptrap
I have no idea if there is anything "creatively" speaking that he has contributed to the BL franchise, besides owning it... but i think the day he convinced himself that he was somehow the creative mind behind that success, all the other devs (the true minds behind it) must have had a collective shudder. I know BL3 isnt the favorite because of the twins and some other "creative" choices, entirely understandable, but still is overall a good game... and i have no doubt anything good it has is NOT because of that sham magician. I like to control my urge for vitriol so i am not reacting too much to the designs of the characters in BL4, but i hope to GOD... that the other devs, the TRUE devs, push back HARD against him to guarantee that the game is at least good.
My biggest problem with the movie is this: WHO WAS THIS FOR? Borderlands fans know about Lilith, Sirens, and Tiny Tina... and 95% of non-fans won't fucking see the movie in the first place So why was this story for?
It is by comparisons. Those are grotesqueries of movies, but this has a bigger story behind it, and even if no one had any hopes for it, the betrayals it does are graver than those two.
2:58 The Battle Angel Alita movie also suffered immensely from its PG13 rating. The source material is brutally violent for a reason. Without the dystopian cyberpunk horror of the manga, the movie just came across generic and forgettable.
Gee it's like if you miss-cast ALL the characters, retcon the canon everyone knows, make it worse, then hire actors who not only do terrible at the roles but seem like they are all phoning it in. The biggest mistake was making the main character be played by a 70 year old when she is supposed to be quite a bit younger. As a diehard borderlands(the game franchise) fan, this has got to be the most disappointing thing to ever come out. I have over 300hrs in bl2, 100+hrs in the others combined. Borderlands 1 was one of the first few "proper" games i played as a kid. Really breaks my heart to see this filth of a movie be associated with the franchise
This is a great example of how studios don't get you can’t just copy and paste details. On the surface Drax seems like dumb tough green guy, but Gunn and Batista give Drax some real depth under the quips.

I'm a 58 year old borderlands fan. I have loved playing the games from the beginning. Although I was disappointed with so much of the movie. I did enjoy watching it. It could have been so much better.
Granted, this is only a minor nitpick, but when I heard about the movie's synopsis and characters, one of the first things I thought was; if they wanted a built-in story to start things off, why not just adapt the second game first, and work back? Of the first two games, it's probably the one with the most fleshed-out story and would've been a great starting-point. But that's just MHO. =)

I've got hundreds of hours in the Borderlands games, when I saw the trailer for the movie I had to wonder who the movie was made for, because it certainly wasn't made for me. The movie captured none of the spirit of the games, it felt like cosplay.
This movie was made for kids. I'm also pretty sure that no one in a leadership role gave a shit about the IP. Lastly, the writing blows like so many other failures that proceeded it and will likely follow it.
I loved these games as a teenager, countless hours spent playing and replaying with my buddies. When I saw the cast, particularly Jack Black as Claptrap, I knew I wouldn't be watching it. Claptrap has a voice actor, they should have used him, it was the first slap in the face to the game's fans, who they should have been catering to. I will never give them the satisfaction of a view, even on streaming services.

I haven't seen the movie, but I like that that they were willing to cast older women in action roles; it's a shame the movie's timeline gets awkward, but Blanchett and Curtis have played badasses before, so it could have worked in a more thought-out movie

The Borderlands movie should’ve just been animated with the original borderlands art style. And should’ve just adapted the first game and be done there. If they wanted to do something completely different that would’ve been fine, but not as this garbage as a plot. And bring back the original voice actors from the Borderlands games to this movie, and have Randy Pitchford have no involvement with this film. That’s what would’ve made this a 10 out of 10 film. But also bringing back the Writers from Borderlands 1 such as: Allison Berryman Mikey Neumann Simon Hurley And the writers from Borderlands 2 such as: Anthony Burch. Have them not just write 1 Borderlands film, but let them have an entire spin on creating this cinematic universe. Randy Pitchford can just be sort of the Kevin Fiege and be the announcer of these projects. So not only would we get 1 movie, but multiple movies and possibly tv shows as well.
They could've made a movie about Krieg and it would be a superhit. His character deserves his own movie. More of a narrative style. Movie starts off with a narration and it turns out to be Krieg's internal monologue while he was being tortured into a psycho. 5 years later he is trying to find himself. In the first act he is all chaos. In the second act, he meets some known characters randomly trying search for answers. In the third act, he finds the person who double crossed him which resulted him in becoming a psycho and takes his meaty revenge. In the epilogue he finds the brochure for Vault Hunters from Handsome Jack that ties into the Borderlands 2 game and thus him becoming "Conductor of the Poop Train".
borderlands is my all-time favorite game series, so i kept my hopes up back when the script leaked a few years ago... and again when the casting was announced... and again when the trailer dropped. now here we are.
The Crow was the worst movie of the year. Borderlands was bad, but its issues mainly stem from the lack of violence and the PG-13 rating. A trademark of the series is filming a Skag's typical behavior only to be interrupted by being killed in a gruesome way. In the movie, they do the Skag scene like the games, but NOTHING HAPPENS. This is the best way to exemplify the issues with the film.
as a lover of the games, this never should have been made into a movie. It didn't have enough story to ever be a movie and was doomed from the start. Now if they really wanted to do a video game into a movie they would "would you kindly?"
IMO the best showcasing gun power and capabilities in recent movies is Bloodsport in Suicide Squad, you don't have to know about guns, he doesn't need to tell it specifications, yet it looks cool and awesome 😎👍

Maybe it's because even if I'm a big fan of borderland games I never expected a movie to adapt what makes them so unique in the first place. A multi episode show maybe could do it, but not a movie there is way too much things to include. So I went with my brain off and had a decent time, which made all of the online backlash strange, even stranger since I end up agreeing to most of the critics.
My experience as a borderlands 1, 2 & 2.5 fan. I bought borderlands 3 and played it to finish. The developers reaction to the negative comments to some of the elements to borderlands 3 means i wont spend anymore money on the franchise. I havnt watched the movie and wont.

Jack Black didn’t stop being human and become a robot. The Moxxie character LOOKS younger than she is. It’s not a big leap. It’s not a big deal. Is Blanchet too old to play the character? I don’t know. Denzel Washington was pretty old in the FIRST equalizer movie. That’s not stopping him or people’s enjoyment. In THAT movie did they say her character was 20 or something? I’m guessing they didn’t. Her age is a non issue. The movie still has PLENTY of other reasons it’s terrible. Unless she seemed too old when she was moving around. I found the characters in The Irishman unbelievable because even when digitally de-aged they move and walk like little old men. The posture, the short unsure steps. THAT is age being an issue. “This actor isn’t the same age as the character they play.” That’s nothing.
They could have still gotten big names for the roles, there are far better options. Idris Elba shouldve been roland. Whoever played Claptrap in the game should've done the film version too. The casting of cate blanchett couldve been any actress in the 20-30 range. I am appalled at the decisions made just in the casting. The movie was doomed before they even started shooting.
I guarantee they casted it like that to try and get older people to come watch it. Jack black should have been cast as Marcus. Instead of Krieg, we should have gotten Brick, and Brick should have been played by Dave Bautista. Roland could have been played by either Terry Crews or Michael Jai White. Kevin hart should have been Claptrap

I have no idea if there is anything "creatively" speaking that he has contributed to the BL franchise, besides owning it... but i think the day he convinced himself that he was somehow the creative mind behind that success, all the other devs (the true minds behind it) must have had a collective shudder.
I know BL3 isnt the favorite because of the twins and some other "creative" choices, entirely understandable, but still is overall a good game... and i have no doubt anything good it has is NOT because of that sham magician.
I like to control my urge for vitriol so i am not reacting too much to the designs of the characters in BL4, but i hope to GOD... that the other devs, the TRUE devs, push back HARD against him to guarantee that the game is at least good.

Those are grotesqueries of movies, but this has a bigger story behind it, and even if no one had any hopes for it, the betrayals it does are graver than those two.
2:58 The Battle Angel Alita movie also suffered immensely from its PG13 rating. The source material is brutally violent for a reason. Without the dystopian cyberpunk horror of the manga, the movie just came across generic and forgettable.
Gee it's like if you miss-cast ALL the characters, retcon the canon everyone knows, make it worse, then hire actors who not only do terrible at the roles but seem like they are all phoning it in. The biggest mistake was making the main character be played by a 70 year old when she is supposed to be quite a bit younger. They fumbled this movie so hard that it should be used to show others what not to do.

As a diehard borderlands(the game franchise) fan, this has got to be the most disappointing thing to ever come out.
I have over 300hrs in bl2, 100+hrs in the others combined. Borderlands 1 was one of the first few "proper" games i played as a kid.

This is a great example of how studios don't get you can’t just copy and paste details. On the surface Drax seems like dumb tough green guy, but Gunn and Batista give Drax some real depth under the quips.

I'm a 58 year old borderlands fan. I have loved playing the games from the beginning. Although I was disappointed with so much of the movie. I did enjoy watching it. It could have been so much better.

Granted, this is only a minor nitpick, but when I heard about the movie's synopsis and characters, one of the first things I thought was; if they wanted a built-in story to start things off, why not just adapt the second game first, and work back? Of the first two games, it's probably the one with the most fleshed-out story and would've been a great starting-point. But that's just MHO. =)
Also, I can’t get over how Blanchett decided to audition and play Lilith, despite her age, purely because of boredom during Covid-19.

I've got hundreds of hours in the Borderlands games, when I saw the trailer for the movie I had to wonder who the movie was made for, because it certainly wasn't made for me. The movie captured none of the spirit of the games, it felt like cosplay.

This movie was made for kids. I'm also pretty sure that no one in a leadership role gave a shit about the IP. Lastly, the writing blows like so many other failures that proceeded it and will likely follow it.
If it was made for kids, the casting made even less sense. Kids don't care or even know about Cate Blanchet or Jamie Lee Curtis.
I loved these games as a teenager, countless hours spent playing and replaying with my buddies. When I saw the cast, particularly Jack Black as Claptrap, I knew I wouldn't be watching it. Claptrap has a voice actor, they should have used him, it was the first slap in the face to the game's fans, who they should have been catering to. I will never give them the satisfaction of a view, even on streaming services.

I haven't seen the movie, but I like that that they were willing to cast older women in action roles; it's a shame the movie's timeline gets awkward, but Blanchett and Curtis have played badasses before, so it could have worked in a more thought-out movie
I agree that the age isn't the issue here. The problem is the TONE of the whole franchise - the PG13 wouldn't allow any actor to really shine in these roles

As someone who never played Borderlands and this movie was my first interaction with the universe, it was a passable movie. Boring in parts, cringe in others, but overall a fun movie. It gave off poor mans Guardians of the Galaxy vibes
The movie had about 15 or so producers with several studios involved and switching direction and directors. Was there ever a project that worked out with that many cooks?
The Borderlands movie should’ve just been animated with the original borderlands art style.
And should’ve just adapted the first game and be done there.
If they wanted to do something completely different that would’ve been fine, but not as this garbage as a plot.
And bring back the original voice actors from the Borderlands games to this movie, and have Randy Pitchford have no involvement with this film.
That’s what would’ve made this a 10 out of 10 film.
But also bringing back the Writers from Borderlands 1 such as:
Allison Berryman
Mikey Neumann
Simon Hurley
And the writers from Borderlands 2 such as:
Anthony Burch.
Have them not just write 1 Borderlands film, but let them have an entire spin on creating this cinematic universe.
Randy Pitchford can just be sort of the Kevin Fiege and be the announcer of these projects.
So not only would we get 1 movie, but multiple movies and possibly tv shows as well.
They could've made a movie about Krieg and it would be a superhit. His character deserves his own movie. More of a narrative style.
Movie starts off with a narration and it turns out to be Krieg's internal monologue while he was being tortured into a psycho. 5 years later he is trying to find himself. In the first act he is all chaos. In the second act, he meets some known characters randomly trying search for answers. In the third act, he finds the person who double crossed him which resulted him in becoming a psycho and takes his meaty revenge. In the epilogue he finds the brochure for Vault Hunters from Handsome Jack that ties into the Borderlands 2 game and thus him becoming "Conductor of the Poop Train".
borderlands is my all-time favorite game series, so i kept my hopes up back when the script leaked a few years ago... and again when the casting was announced... and again when the trailer dropped. now here we are.

The Crow was the worst movie of the year.
Borderlands was bad, but its issues mainly stem from the lack of violence and the PG-13 rating.
A trademark of the series is filming a Skag's typical behavior only to be interrupted by being killed in a gruesome way.
In the movie, they do the Skag scene like the games, but NOTHING HAPPENS.
This is the best way to exemplify the issues with the film.
I don't think it was that bad, was still an enjoyable popcorn flick, not every movie needs to be a PhD dissertation
as a lover of the games, this never should have been made into a movie. It didn't have enough story to ever be a movie and was doomed from the start. Now if they really wanted to do a video game into a movie they would "would you kindly?"

The moment i saw kate blanched i lost my shit and kevin hart gave me rest...it was that bad...i never played the games nor do i know the lore...
From the trailer this reminded me of the Cowboy Bebop live action. Just cosplay. Aside frim the actors being too old, Kevin Hart as Roland really surprised me. Looked like a DEI hire.

Since it came out I see everyone dumping on that movie and it had me quite puzzled because I really enjoyed it. Maybe it's because even if I'm a big fan of borderland games I never expected a movie to adapt what makes them so unique in the first place. A multi episode show maybe could do it, but not a movie there is way too much things to include.
So I went with my brain off and had a decent time, which made all of the online backlash strange, even stranger since I end up agreeing to most of the critics.
My experience as a borderlands 1, 2 & 2.5 fan. I bought borderlands 3 and played it to finish. The developers reaction to the negative comments to some of the elements to borderlands 3 means i wont spend anymore money on the franchise. I havnt watched the movie and wont.

That said... While this movie was bad, it is not the worst of 2024. I get it. It feels like Madam Webb came out 2 years ago now, but it was this year.

What? No, Tiny Tina is def on Borderlands 1 as a quest giver in one of the zones. I don`t remember if it is base game or DLC though.
I go to the cinema with zero expectations so I won't get disappointed and the movies released lately still manage to take a huge dump on everything.
I swear, everybody just stopped trying because people simply watch everything. I truly hope every single nad movie goes bankrupt so movie makers will start to give a damn again.
And this is why movies based off of video games are nigh impossible for Hollywood to make. The exceptions being the Sonic trilogy, The Super Mario Bro’s movie and that’s all I can think of

I had no outside influence, watched no ads, nothing. I was on a 13 hour flight and tried watching this movie. I was only 20 minutes in before calling it quits. It was sooooo bad.
It is said that they were actually filming gory stuff, but it all got thrown out. I wished, in the age of social media and fake profiles, the culprits would be called out more ofteb in public. And by that, I don't mean "the bad studio" or "the evil producers". No. I wanna see names. Let them defend themselves in public.

Fun fact. It actually wasn't the worst movie of 2024. "Madame Web", "Megalopolis" and "Rebel Moon Part two" completely annihilates Borderlands in terms of bad.

It is sad that Borderlands did not get an entertaining film because there was a solid story there with good characters. I am so done with these film studios attempting to copy Marvel's template over and over with lackluster results. We need some good original stories to be told on screen.
