  • Many of the clothes sold in American stores come from factories in Bangladesh, which has a history of workplace disasters. Following the factory collapse last month that killed over 1,000 people, Holly Williams went undercover to see what the conditions are really like.

    How does closing down an entire factory help the already ‘unfortunate’ workers? Our workers are so simple, even with the fear of loosing their job, they spoke to a complete stranger in the only hope to better their working conditions and salary. The investigators should have instead sent warnings so the factory could improve in a given period of time. They could have asked those brands to pay more generously, and ensure it reaches the workers. What they received instead was a total shut down of the very platform that was the only means for the food on their table.

    The other thing not mentioned, which is fine because it was just a short segment, is how in these poor countries the fabrics and dyes are made with zero regard to the environment. This is such a hard thing to really deal with because you feel for these workers but it's really their government that is throwing them under the bus.
    What I do is buy American, from western or european countries and/or companies that can show their products are made responsibly. I know this is expensive but I also don't buy a lot of clothes and I try consignment shops and 2nd hand stores first.
    The problem is that the West makes too much cheap crap and people buy too much cheap crap and they waste too much perfectly fine things. I tell people that you don't need tons of things, clothes especially. If you do, buy quality American made goods and/or try a 2nd hand store first because there is so much there that is great and inexpensive...

    Those factory owners didn’t force those child to work at their factories. Their own parents had forced them to work in the factories. As you guys heard that the young girl saying that she created a fake id that shows she is over the age of 18.There are some poor people in bangladesh, thats why they force their kids to work in factories. The factory workers didn’t force anyone to work for them. Those things only happens in the slums. There are big cities and middle class neighborhoods in bangladesh. Kids from rich and middle class families in bangladesh don’t work in factories. There are people in bangladesh who lives in big mansions.

    • @strnglhld
      @strnglhld 2 роки тому +2

      The factory workers clearly know she is underage and the documents are faulty and choose to look the other way. However, I don’t blame the parents nor the local factory management. I blame the wealthy ones at the top making these decisions and allowing for this.
      I don’t doubt that Bangladesh has wealthy people just like anywhere else, but that isn’t relevant. You seem to be more insulted by the insinuation that all of Bangladesh is poor rather than the exploitation here.

    I don't quite understand what's the intention of this video. And what is the goal of this british reporter. Does she just do a reporting on this matter then goes back to her country? Or does she suggest that those big companies stop doing business with Bangladesh? If so, how would the situation make even better? If they stop doing business; isn't the situation going to be even worse?
    I understand there needs to be more regulation by Bangladeshi Govt. protecting the rights and well being of it's labor force. I hope your intention is to make things better or help the poor. The people who buy the clothes and other things made in Bangladesh (as well as China) aren't made aware of how their things are made, and it's videos like these that help raise that awareness and encourage shoppers to abandon big companies like Walmart. I guess I'm trying to better understand the situation (and I guess play devil's advocate), but how do we improve the situation if not by calling out large corporations? I understand that having big companies pull out of their deals with these manufacturers will cause many Bangladeshis to lose their jobs (and by extension the manufacturers will implement harsher conditions), but this isn't just something to be complacent about. I get people wanting to cut down on fast fashion by problematic brands like those mentioned in the video, but for many Bangladeshi families, that's their only shot at survival. What's the solution then? It doesn't seem like these brands are making an active effort to see where their inventory is coming from and through what means. IDK if that makes sense but

Because "WOMEN EMPOWERMENT" bruhhh!. There's about 5 million people working in the garment industry in Bangladesh. More than 80% of them are woman. As you guessed the women are severely underpaid than the men. Women get paid like 10k taka or less. While men get paid over 20k taka. Those who are in the higher ups get paid more than 100k per month. Which is actually quite a good pay in Bangladesh. I'm not trying to make fun of these women. I'm just trying to say that they themselves chose this job where they're severely underpaid, disrespected and made fun of. No one's forcing them to do the job. Honestly never gonna happen, the cost of paying employees would go up & so would the prices of products. Then people wouldn’t want to pay the higher prices.

    I get that the working condition is bad and hazards are big
    They got a job, they're lucky enough right?
    Sure the Boss broke some(a lot) of promises
    But then if that's the case then why don't the people just quit
    Yea they can't get money anymore
    But they don't got a right to complain
    If they don't like it they should move to a better country after gathering enough money
