I am cinco-ocho till I die. Or until I get priced out of my own home/world/life. It is vey sad to see this place is not the town I was raised in. It feels like not having a hometown that I came from. A foreigner in my own space. I love this song. And your, what is that, a 58 Chevy? Anyway, thanks for the music.
every day I wake up and feel the sadness of being from austin, living in austin, and "feeling like a transplant" Home is vitally important to a persons identity and roots, its a tragedy to have it taken away from us right in front of our eyes. Especially from texans with so much pride. From dove springs to Westlake people from here are feeling the loss heavy on their hearts. Much respect to Lench for vocalizing it.
This is nothing but the truth right here man. Great song..... It's crazy to me that you see Duplexes and small house on Haskell Street, going for 600k-1.3 million dollars... Back in the day, you barely got 175k for a house or duplex over there.
Fuck yeah, man. This should be the "London Calling" of ATX, blastin' out of every car on the street, every bar older than 10 years, and every damn house party. Oh wait. House party's don't happen here anymore cuz they 'dozed the homes and raised condo's. Good on ya, homie. WE NEEDED THIS.

We tore up the last Jumpolin Piñata on Willow Street yesterday for my son's 4th birthday party. It was a Mexican wrestler with a black hood I had been holding back for quite some time.
damn this kinda choked me up.... all he saying is true I was born n raised off of 6th and pleasant valley.... now in montopolis and you see that gentrification slowly creeping our way..... pushing all the people who made austin austin out..... great song bro.... speaking the truth....
Dude, you're throwing down hard in this jam Lench. Keep doing what you're doing. Thanks again for offering some help at the Chevron. Get some business cards, brother!
Im only 14 but i miss the old austin. Its been changing my whole life but it just gets worse not better. This song is awesome! Being from the east side i have seen that change the most and it sucks. This is for sure a new favorite song! And by the way im tired of people calling it SoCo! :p
I've listened to this song so many times that I've lost count. Those lyrics are powerful. But I'm so hesitant to leave a comment because I'm sure someone is going to be like, "What's this white bitch know?" I won't even begin to try to relate to the cultural loss to the east side, but damn ATX has changed for the worse. I got here in the early 90s for high school and stuck around for college. I lived in the 04 and the 41 because that was affordable for a kid in college! Now I'm a teacher and I probably can't even afford the taxes in those areas. The million dollar homes are running lots of us out.
Been in the East for 15 years! The changes are real, the gentrification happened. Lost a lot of raza, but we still representing. Some of us are holding strong. Going to take a lot to get us all!
As a public school teacher who is thinking of moving to the 78721 because it is close to the school I teach at, I feel very torn about moving into the area. What are your suggestions on maintaining diversity in the area? I want to become a part of the community, not an agent of gentrification that pushes people out of their homes. Torn about the decision man. Curious what a native has to say.
Yes what happened indeed? Greed is what happened. They are growing this city without infrastructure. The rich all have cars. They are building luxury apt. on Manchaca right now tween Will Cannon and Stassney when we need middle class apts. The middle/lower class would some take a bus or ride a bike which helps with city congestion. These rich folks won't. Seriously are there enough rich effers' to fill all these places they are building for them? I dunno, I think it is a racket.
They want to build up the areas, beautify? Cool, got it. But to raise property taxes, price of homes, the cost of living is ridiculous. Never been to SXSW, or any other hipster festival. The city can keep it.
my family has been in Austin since 1915. Its a shame what the East side has become. Murals painted over, local bars removed the jukebox's that contained music of our culture, and the list goes on....
I fear this is happening to San Antonio now... makes my heart break. Born and raised in SA. I know it's progress, I just hope it never gets to the point that Austin has. 😔
I love Austin, I went to Sims elementary, Pearce before they shut it down, and LBJ...and it doesn't look the same, sucks to see the way they doing the city, especially the East Side.

wth? do you even know ANYTHING about politics? the Democrat council is the one that overturned all of the old laws that kept condos out and that changed the name of everything!! are you kidding? your Eastside Democrat councilman is building his own million dollar home there. just WOW! THIS ISN'T about republicans or Democrats it's about sell outs and GREED
Sorry to break it to you David but the entire time you were in Austin it was run by one Republican and the rest Democrats. That's nearly 40 years of Austin being run by democrats til this day and you holler republicans did it? Fact check

East austin business owners say they woke up this morning to find their store destroyed. It wasn't vandals, but a demolition crew, that had all the right permits. How does something like this happen?
It's a must we compete for profit
But it goes to the deepest pockets
He was all about peace and progress,
Way before you called it Cesar Chavez.
It was 1st Street
And the worst street
A bunch of Mexicanos on a seven-day work week.
Selling raspas, corn and piñatas
Back when all the casas
Were owned by La Raza
There were Rascals
Ridin' down Haskell
Now it's full of vatos
On bikes with satchels
Are you mad bro?
How you think we feel?
Kick us out the barrio
Now you wanna rebuild?
Hipster, Mister
Boy ya musta missed ya
Maid back on his way back to Lago Vista
It's the East Side
Rest In Peace side
Betta put your mask on
Before you shake the bee hive
They talk to me from the grave
Telling me I gotta do it
Boy I lit the match you got the lighter fluid
Keep it all real, if you don't you're going to ruin it
Don't you hold back, don't you (?)
If I was born in Munich bet I would remember
Everything that happened on that black September day
But instead I'm from the (?)
Betta believe that a paco got something to say
Zilker park wasn't always for the hippies
It was segregated til the 1960s
Built up an interstate, hoping to discriminate
Hoping we would stay put
That we would never penetrate
The west side of 35
Isn’t it ironic that,
We were exiled now these MFs want it back?
Gentrification
Pen hit the page and
Now the whole city knows
Lench is a ?
My beautiful City, my beautiful home
It was so naturally perfect
I wish they'd leave you alone
I see that you've grown
Isee that you're shining
Before the world ever knew it
You were a beautiful diamond
Such a beautiful diamond
Making beautiful sounds
We're the Live Music Capitol
The Violet Crown
I still take pride in my town
But it's changing too often
Got me asking myself
What's happened to Austin?
Feel good to get it off my chest
Even tho a couple fools wanna stop my quest
I still got my Skipper pin from the Aqua Fest
Still never been to South by South West
Seen what they did to the Fran’s on Congress,
Now they wanna do the same thing to Montopolis
Make it all spotless; take out the Tom Gro,
Raise up the taxes, build up the condos
What about the history?
What about the movement?
Hell we only fought for the sake of improvement
Back to the '02 - Every time I roll thru
I'm afraid Pam Am's gonna be a Whole Foods
Ever thought that
If we fought back
Finally came to get the man
We could all stop that
We could look back
Say that we did that
We all took from it
Now it's time that we give back
The fields right there where my grandpa played
Cristo Rey Church where my grandma prayed
Santa Rita Courts where my fam all stayed
Back when lil' Joe used to jam all day
Now it's in the '05, Now it's in the '04
Now they building condos up and down "SoCo"
Right up on the '44 , when we get it poppin
Where the rate keep climbin' but the crime ain't droppin'
(?) around here no more
I feel like a transplant everywhere that I go
Million dollar homes
You can see it on Zillow
You ain't gotta look for it
You can see 'em on Willow
Then upon my pillow
But I'm feeling so restless
Half these MFs ain't even from Texas
Roll into Chicano park (?)
"Keep it down buddy
You're scaring my poodle"
(?) my pupils.. the way that I do
Respect our intelligence
We're tired of being lied to
You act like we're blind to
What's going on in front of us
Gentrification benefits none of us
Some of us sell dope, some of us steal
Most of us work hard and always will
We ain't tryin' to get rich, we just tryin' to pay bills
F you and your multimillion dollar deals
My beautiful City
My beautiful home
It was so naturally perfect
I wish they'd leave you alone
I see that you've grown
I see that you're shining
Before the world ever knew it
You were a beautiful diamond
Such a beautiful diamond
Making beautiful sounds
