  • Swimming a constipated snake to get a result. If constipation persists it can be fatal. In this video I cover a little about the basics on how to get a snake to defecate via moving and swimming. Some snakes can get so backed up it can be a fatal condition where the lining of the colon could break and infection can kill.
    All snakes can swim and it is also some good exercise. This is the first step to helping a snake defecate.
    Other things like infection prey items with liquid paraffin and then feeding to your snake. Look for vets advice regarding this step.

      @potats that might be some urate you will be able to feel if it is hard like a stone. If it is right at the edge you might be able to gently massage it out.

    I have a young ball python that’s constipated and he’s big at the back end. I bought him last week and he’s are two hoppers without using the bathroom. He was dehydrated so i gave him a pedialite soak yesterday with no result. He drinks a lot of water, I’m gonna soak him again today. Do you have any other advice? He has been constipated long. Thank you for any replies.

      Two meals for a ball python is not to much. They can get a calcified urate ball that can block them up a bit. I would say only if the blockage is really bad and at the very end of the cloaca is can be gently massaged out. This would best be done by a vet or someone with some experience. If the snake is hurt it can go septic and die. You could also fees a meal with some liquid parafin they sell at the pharmacy as it helps as a lubricant. It will maybe get them to go. Just make sure you the the one for consumption and not the flammable type. LOL If the snake is not feeling very backed up and it is just the ball I wouldn't stress to much yet. Hope this bit of info helps. Would be easier to see in person etc how far it is.

    That snake seems stressed.. I usually put a rock in the middle for them to feel safe and secure.. also count a lid on and let them sit for a few mins in their bath.. of course their are holes in the lid.

    • @reptilegarden
      @reptilegarden  4 роки тому +4

      I understand where your coming from but if I placed a rock for the snake to sit it wouldn't get the same result. These snakes sit motionless for weeks and this is also why they get backed up. I was monitoring the snake the whole time. It no were to leave it alone I would place a landing platform. A little stress for a result is motvthe end of the world as if it stayed backed upon would have lost it. She is still doing very well to this day and only goes though this if she is heavily backed up.

      I don't fully understand the question? Mabe time without a swim the snake will become so compacted but will die? Or time without watching it while it swims it could drown.

      There will be a few variables as to size of the snake versus the meals etc. I have had a Blood Python that took 12 good meals before it went but they are known for holding it on for ages. Normally you can feel and see the snake is having issues when it is of concern. You can feel hard lumps etc. Sometimes a calcified urate ball can block them up. This can be gently massaged out if it is right by the cloaca but best for a vet to assist. I did say 5 or 6 meals you can really start to wonder. You can also feed a meal with some liquid paraffin ( this is the type you get at a pharmacy that people take when constipated). Again possibly get a vet to assist in the amount to use etc. Most times some exercise gets them to go if they have enough in the system.

    I have an Arizona mountain king snake that seems constipated at the moment, tried the soaking method today with no results so far. I was wondering when i should next try? Or what else there is i could try?
    He is getting very thin now due to not eating so im worried it could be getting to the point of no return soon. Thankyou so much for any tips

    • @reptilegarden
      @reptilegarden  5 років тому +1

      Sorry for the delay. It sounds a bit odd that your snake is loosing weight. This makes me thing it might have another issue like a hard growth of tumour. Have you been recording how many meals it has had. If it hasn't had more than three you could possibly feed again but maybe best see a reptile vet as fast weight loss is not good sign. You can also inject a meal with liquid parafin (from the pharmacy not the flexible kind) which will help as a laxative pass everything. Again best speak with a vet about this.

    • @reptilegarden
      @reptilegarden  4 роки тому

      Hi Andres, It is hard to say without seeing the snake. Soaking wont help much as the snake needs to get moving. Some Boids can get large hard urate blockages. If this is right at the end of the cloaca is can be gentle assisted out. Often you can get the hard blockages and not much can pass them. Don't force anything to much as you could cause a prolapse or injure the animal. Sometimes a vet trip is best, we also don't know if the snake has a growth or tumor etc.
