Martin, Thank you so much for such a great falconry overview! I'm a General Falconer getting ready to train my first Prairie, and found this series in preparation. You truly have done a "Good thing" with this series, our partnership with these birds is so often misunderstood.
As someone who has watched urban Falcon nest cams for almost 20 years, it's time I learned about falconry! Martin, you made it so easy for Piper to quickly learn to fly to your glove for his treat. I would need 3 or 4 arms to become a skilled Master Falconer like yourself! Thanks for a delightful video!
I keep seeing these guys. Yesterday there were three that came to my back door? Neighbor feeds squirrels corn and peanuts and I think mom brought her two kids to hunt premium squirrels. Very majestic animals. Such spirit.
I'm just starting my learning curve before adquiring my first falcon... so, reading everything that falls into my hands and browsing the internet for videos like this one and advices from people like you. Still a long way upfront.@@GowildlifeOrg
@@GowildlifeOrg It would be great if you could start a series of vids about the basics of falconry or similar.... or at least would you recommend one? Thanks
Dear Martin, This is so terrific! You handle Piper with true grace! I am listening to an audiobook, "H is for Hawk" by English author, Helen Macdonald. It is a memoir about her life, in particular her experiences training a goshawk. Ms. Macdonald loved watching birds as a child, and knew she wanted to be a Falconer. She also gives feedback on different historical English books on falconry. Watching you after listening to much of this book makes me appreciate the challenges falconers face. You are certainly a master of this skill. Your work is not for the weak of heart. Piper is a beautiful little bird. I can see how your confidence and experience make a difference in how he reacts to you. He will be a great ambassador! May you enjoy working with him for many years! Dianna
Just seen this, don't know why I never got the notification. Anyway, it's amazing to watch Pipers training. All to do with ''trust and proper communication''. Good job Martin.👍
Thank you so much for sharing this with us! I hope you will continue to share Piper's training sessions. It's hard to believe that anyone working with birds could EVER forget the most rudimentary of training techniques and fail to clip a bird! It's like gates... you NEVER walk through a gate without shutting it. NEVER take a hand off the gate until it is closed and latched properly... But I guess there are some who don't mind chasing down horses or livestock....😔. And evidently those who don't care about losing their birds.😱😥❤
@@GowildlifeOrg The only thing about these videos I don't like is the inability to forward them on. I don't Facebook nor Instagram, etc, but I do like to forward them to select friends. This newer format won't allow me to do that. 😔
I just looked up how old falconry is (because when I think about this craft, I think of medieval aristocrats' past time), only to realize that people started this probably as early as 4000 years (!) ago. I wonder however if Mr. Tyner started as a falconer and then decided to rescue as many of these majestic birds as possible, or if he always wanted to (in lack of a better word) help them and did falconry to be better at rescues? Or is a training in falconry required to be allowed to handle birds of prey?
My favorite falcon in part because I've seen and photographed so many of them in comparison with the Peregrines. Also it was so neat to see one up close on the hand. Gives me a better understanding of their actual size. They are really not very large birds are they?

Blessed for having acces to this Master falconer lessons.

When we see the closer shots, it’s incredible how big his eyes are in proportion to his head.

They vary in size, but generally on the smaller side.
10:48 = Awesome
Great work sir
I have a baby kestrel can i train it the same way
What about the one you trapped a few weeks ago?? That the Golden Eagle was about to snag
How long does it take on average for the bird to associate the whistle with food?
Varies with training and each bird.
Thanks.
