HIDDEN FIGURES is the incredible untold story of Katherine G. Johnson (Taraji P. Henson), Dorothy Vaughan (Octavia Spencer) and Mary Jackson (Janelle Monáe)-brilliant African-American women working at NASA, who served as the brains behind one of the greatest operations in history: the launch of astronaut John Glenn into orbit, a stunning achievement that restored the nation’s confidence, turned around the Space Race, and galvanized the world. The visionary trio crossed all gender and race lines to inspire generations to dream big.

@Chief Tahchawwickah that's a bit harsh. This is a story that needs to be told and shared to all or else how do you expect to break down the stigma towards race and color? This is for all. This is to say that color and race are very well capable of a job and getting it done. If we set aside our differences this is how NASA got their job done. That is the message here.

It's interesting how, at least to me, Vivian (Kirsten Dunst's character) strikes me as the most racist, like she's probably not nearly as smart as the Dorothy Vaughan or any of the other women in that room and she's actually relatively low in the pecking order so the racist stuff just lets here enjoy a little bit of power.

@@nuclearmex630 there is definitely something to be said for the casual racism of white women using their privilege to oppress others via power struggles. The comment while she leaves “didn’t think I’d come all the way down here” shows that she had a low opinion of the people there without reason. The discussion between them about her supervisor position too, no acknowledgement of the different treatment between the group she was in charge of and Vivian’s likely all white division of calculators. It’s definitely there

Man do I hate the chain of command in these places, even at NASA. My great uncle Vinnie was with the troops who landed on D-Day and he made himself a promise that if he survived, he would never lift another heavy load, or dig a ditch or join anyone else's chain of command ever again and when he came home he never did.
He was gentle man, and a sharp dresser, and he lived a quiet, and happy life after the war.
As for me, I'm happy with my lemonade stand, its small, but it's all mine.

Love this scene. Love this movie. Love what it depicted about the troubled times & the circumstances these women overcame. And I have no problem with the makers taking creative license with some of the details to make a greater point. Gotta' admit though, having come of age during that era & being a bit of a car nut, I had to chuckle at the line where they were 'chasing that cop in 1961' with the gearshift lever of that '57 Chevy either in park if it was an automatic, or in reverse or 2nd gear if it was a 3-speed stick shift. (Not to mention the cop was clearly driving a 1964 Ford!) LOL! …………. Still love that movie.
