This is cool as heck and was essentially why I wanted to get the OT. My friend has a huge modular setup and I wanted to be able to just plug in and start mangling the sound in harmony with him. Thanks for your great vids!
Wanttoknowabout haha I agree that would definitely be dope :D not sure I’ll be taking the dive into more Elektron gear anytime soon though, unfortunately.
Curious, why run the thru machine on 5 and route to pickup on track 1 instead of recording directly into track 1 pickup? Trying to understand the advantage (and disadvantage v direct recording to track 1 pickup). Great vid and channel!
It's totally conditional to what your goals are. At the time of recording this video, I really liked being able to preview the signal on a muted, CUE-ed thru track before looping it in the pickup machine!
Hi Kenny, did you experienced any click during the recording session? It's quite impossible to me (and many other people, as I read in Elektronauts forum) use the pickup machine! It doesn't matter which lenght I choose for fade in/out, clicks appears on every registration, it's just so frustrating... btw thanks for the great videos and cheers!
Kenny Zhao it’s really bizarre, I found out that, if I pickup some evolving sounds with long releases, the clicks disappear but, if I record short sounds like a bass track, clicks come back.. Maybe are they just “hidden” by the long and evolving sounds?
Human League vibes in there. Nice. I got a question... when I am in chromatic mode or slices ( don’t know if that matters)-recording in real time on the Octa, sometimes it records the speed expression of what I just played...other times it doesn’t catch it. It just seems like it quantizes it and misses a few hits. I have gone in the Personalize section and disarm/arm quantization and it doesn’t seem to make a difference. Any idea what I’m doing wrong?
Yes! I’ve made this mistake before too, the general settings quantization only applies to MIDI, I believe. For your audio slices you gotta make sure quantizing in your AED is set to DIRECT, you can find that in page 4 of your editor, where you adjust tempo and loop settings. It’s at the very bottom, and if it says 1/16 for example, it will snap your performance to every step.
Kenny Zhao I set it to direct. It didn’t work. :(. (( hours later : I did what you said and it didn’t work, like I mentioned...but then I unclicked “quantize live recording” and set timestretch to normal on attr page. It worked then it went away again... I am so confused. Is it a combination of things? Does my Octacunt hate me?
@@aidanvinum haha! Right so I did a little digging. Basically the AED setting decides whether your performance gets adjusted in real-time. "Quantize Live Record" decides whether the Octatrack will snap your performance *after* you record it. So if you had AED set to "Direct" and Quantize set to on, you'd hear your own performance but then it would get snapped in the pattern. In other words, both need to be turned on for you to get exactly what you play, both live and in the sequence.
Kenny Zhao Did you mean both need to be turned OFF or ON? Either way, I tried both and neither works. :(. Which is bizarre because I think it was a few days ago. NOW my chromatic mode playing just gets quantized every time that it sounds humanless. Insomuch that I’m considering getting a small synth . :/
this would be pretty amazing and it works for me up til the point where i keep getting 'Overdub aborted' error, and it destroys the entire purpose of the "pick up" machine. My OT is slave to my 707, have you experienced this problem?
@@thomasvandendool6613 Yeah it's somewhat awkward! What I found is if there is any kind of pitch adjustment (including via LFO) then it will disable overdub functions
@@KennyZhao Yeah i came across that as well in a forum (was probably your post :D ) , luckily flex is enough to get my set going, thanks for the reply!

Totally, long as you're both synced up you should have a great time using this to remix ideas live!
Yeah, this has always been one of the most interesting aspects of the OT to me.
It feels like just recently i was asking for more on pickups so I am hyped! Thanks!!!
I’m going to try this with my filter house set. Super interesting routing. Thanks!
Eric Liss awesome, glad you enjoyed it! Yeah it’s crazy how just thinking of how things are connected can inspire entirely new techniques
Great series of videos. You need to get an Analog four and make a series of videos on that as well!

I've heard that this is a problem for people, but strangely have never run into it on my machine :/

i was already very pissed that timestretch cannot be switched off for the pick up machine, it's such a silly implementation overall
