The saddest thing is that even at that time when Vfx was not available the directors still managed to make audience engaging and good but now in 2018 when everything is available we get to see really childhish scenes like for eg Mr X,Thugs of Hindustan,Mohenjodaro etc

Go for a pre-1965 Meena Kumari film. Esp. 'Sahib Biwi aur Ghulam' or 'Chitralekha' ; or even 'Benazir' with Shashi Kapoor himself. You'll know why she is his fav actress, and as ahead of her times.

Indian movie goers are just not used to watching experimental cinema. And you cannot blame them. We usually try to find escapism in cinema. For decades Bollywood is shoving romance down our throat. That's why a film like Inception just cannot be made in India.

Utsav (1984) based on poet Bhasa's Charudatta and Shudraka's Mrichhakatikam; having some of the finest story telling, set designs, background score and evergreen songs like 'Sanjh dhale gagan tale' and 'Mann kyun beheka re beheka'; featured an ensemble cast of Shashi Kapoor, Rekha, Shekhar Suman, Amjad Khan, Neena Gupta, Anupam Kher, Annu Kapoor and so on... And yet, it failed to capture audiences of the times.
Available online, this classic is absolute treat for both Sanskrit and Historic / Period drama lovers!

Back then that was the only way movies were advertised now they have many mediums thanks to social media before all the trailers on movies in cinemas or soon to be launched were showcased in between shows so I don't get the argument that the production company didn't advertise it when that was the most they could do.

'Amrapali ' was inaccurate at so many levels- not only historically, but also textually(it was based on Acharya Chatursen's novel ' Vaishaali ki Nagarvadhu'). It's said to have been conceived in that phase where the film's director Lekh Tandon was smitten by Vyajantimala, and ended up giving her most of the focus. This very approach to the story didn't go well with the critics. Also, considering the fact that Amrapali (or Ambapali) was a 'nagarvadhu' or a royal courtesan- she didn't just twirl her way into the kingdom after winning a dance competition- as the film suggests. There was a much darker truth behind it, of child-trafficking back in the Buddhist era. The original story never shies away from the topic, nor did the film's predecessor 'Chitralekha'(1964).

Sardar was a classic movie and showcases the harsh truth of how Sardar Patel did everything he could still was told to step down from the race to become first PM of Independent India by Mahatma Gandhi.

@@ritushukla9284 I won't count Raincoat because that is an art house cinema..Provoked was a hit. Sarabjit mayn't be a big hit but financially successful...UmraoJaan wasn't a great movie, you may count it. Raavana was too successful, the Hindi version wasn't appreciated by Critics but Tamil one was liked...Iruvar flopped cause of political turmoil, otherwise that is a great great movie with 8.6 IMDb rating...that is why Shobha De,a senior journalist said Aishwarya hasn't got her due as an actress.
