Definitely have a soft spot for Steve Asmussen...a hands on trainer who shows up to saddle & watch his charges before their race 99.9% of the time. Old time trainers were always on hand...not so much anymore. Steve, on the other hand, is as dedicated to his horses as he is to including family in their chosen sport...Congratulations Carbone, a win well deserved..🏇🏆💯

He and a few others in this race broke their maidens last time out by big margins, just like Carbone, and I was wondering why the odds were so steep on those horses. But the people backing Carbone probably had info such as the caliber of his competition in his first win. Maybe these horses ran against mediocre competition. It's so hard when they're all so young and there's not much to see yet to give clues of what's to come. And I'm apparently a sucker for the big chestnuts. I liked Hence too. I try not to be swayed by just looks, but it happens. Gewurztraminer(sp?) is big and pretty like that, but moving up then fading badly . . . Unless something happened to explain it which we couldn't see, like he bled or something, he isn't looking too good after this race.

I see Steve at Oaklawn all the time definitely hands on trainer. His son Keith started a little slow but has turned into a excellent jockey.

Northern Flame went to his knees out of the gate, ran a great race to finish fourth.

After the Southwest and the Rebel I would say Carbone is off the Derby trail. He did not do well.
