Work on open chords as well (G, C, E, D, A, Em, Am etc). You’re gonna want to know those open chords for the future. Also try to learn what the names of the power chords you’re playing during those riffs. Practice with a metronome. You want to have steady rhythm and tempo. Also make sure the arch those fingers and play with the finger tips. You want to develop callouses on your fingertips so playing is easier and playing with the pads of your fingers will block too many strings and you won’t get the sound out of it. Play things slow to start. Get the correct placement and timing down. You can speed up when you’re more comfortable.
Keep working and practicing. It’ll pay off, but right now you have to practice correctly so you develop good guitar habits for the future. A lot of the stuff right now is just muscle memory and building up muscle since your hands aren’t used to these new positions. Just keep working at it, you’ll keep growing and learning.

Thank you, this is genuinely really good advice. I was meaning to work on my open chords, and play songs that airnt just power cords, and I do really need to work on my finger posture.

@@Dmitri_Q no problem. It’s all good stuff to know. Guitar is a lot of hard work at the beginning…..and then more hard work to get better, BUT it’ll be a bit easier and more fun once you get the basics down and can play some songs. It becomes even more fun when you play with friends!
I’m glad you have the learner mentality and want to learn chords because that’ll make you a better guitarist than someone who knows a bunch of riffs. All of the more complex or single note things will come in time and they’ll make more sense functionally in how they interact with a song.
You’re making good headway, you just need to keep at it. This is the most difficult hill to climb. It’s why a lot of people start guitar and why most of them drop off. It’s a difficult barrier to entry. You can hit a drum, or hit a piano key and make a sound, but with guitar even one note can be hard to play if you’re new to it.
You’ve got a good start, but there’s still room to grow. I don’t say that to discourage you, I say that because you have so many more worlds to conquer if you keep playing. If you keep practicing EFFECTIVELY (there can be such a thing as wasted practice time) you will see improvement. Enjoy!
