  • “When Putin looked West on February 24 2022, he didn't see a conventional deterrence. And we are absolutely key to Nato's conventional deterrence.”
The government need to spend more money on UK defence to strike the final blow to Putin, says former British Army Colonel Hamish de Bretton-Gordon.

Exactly what Trump has been saying, but not NATO. NATO is the US and the US has alway liked Europe to be militarily weak. 'Keep the US in, Russia out, and Germany down' has been the US mantra about Europe since 1945. Britain is caught by the dilemma that it wants to attack and defeat Russia but that can only happen with the Americans and not the French or Germans. The Germans have been kept emasculated militarily since 1945, the way Britain likes it to be, but now that policy is backfiring.

Spending 'more' is a USA method where they famously pay $9000 for a regular bag of bolts. Spend better and maybe you wont lose $300Bn with no idea where its gone The UK will never up spending on its army because successive governments have been told for the past 75 years that large land armies are a thing of the past. This lack and criminal lack of spending has been going on since Elizabeth I. The near future could have 10s of millions of killer drones on a single battlefiled, too dangerous for people. The soldier I think is going the way of the cavalry charge. We need drone investment, air land and sea because new fighter jets are dexribed as flying coffins by peopole like Elon Musk.

      Army strength 103,000 in 2010.
There was a 2010 Strategic Defence Review is by many non partisan experts rated as one of the three worst post WW2 ones. Along with 1957 and 1981.
It was nothing more than a slashing exercise run by the Treasury.
With Osborne wanting to go further still.
The new review actually has a small core, despite the guest’s comments.
Fiona Hill a British born Russia expert who for a time advised the previous Trump administration and is generally respected over there.
A former Chief Of The Defence Staff.
Lord Robertson, who as George Robertson got one of the better reviews through in 1998, outmaneuvering the Treasury. Then a former head of NATO.
A decent interviewer would have explored this review, the challenges which alol incoming governments do. They did at the height of the Cold War.
But as one expert, Peter Hennessy said referring to his journalist career in the 1970’s, ‘back when I was at The Times, when it was a quality newspaper’.
There is a case that along with many other nations , the war on terror conflicts affected procurement away from full scale conflicts.
But at the time what was said?
‘We need light armoured mine proof vehicles not artillery, tanks etc’.

Their record of looking after the Armed Forces is dire - early retirements of Harrier, Tornado, Hercules; a failed pivot to Asia and deployment of the two new carriers (which we can't deploy a carrier battle group to protect); terrible recruitment and retention of armed forces personnel, accomodation that isn't fit for people - the list is long and does not make edifying reading. Trying to lay all of this at the new adminstrations feet wont wash, it's a Conservative failure.

Russia is in a fight to the death against Ukraine, which is using a fraction of the equipment held by Western European nations. How can anyone say that Russia would initiate a war with a NATO member?
He also speaks of the UK Government, it might be worthwhile for him to note who funded the UK military from 2010 into 2014? The UK public needs to consider where did all the money go if it was not going to national defense, the NHS, building new schools and hospitals, expanding rail service, or any other public service?

I agree. President Putin pointed out to his own genrals who wanted all out war with NATO how unwise that would be as even American defense spending far exceeded theirs. Why then would he even attack Ukraine and why time and time again has his aim been for peace. When the Warsaw Pact ended it was on the understanding that NATO would do likewise. The West did no such thing, and broke every single treaty they made with Russia, Angela Merkel addmitted NATO had no intention of honouring the Minsk Agreement, missiles were placed well in range of Russia and he pleaded with the West to desist in these actions. He gave big reductions on grass for Ukraine pensioners, while the West pursued an even more aggressive stance. Russia endured about eight years of Azov brigade persecution of the Russian people who were not allowed their religious practice and bombed and shelled innocent people in the DONBASS region. Then at the time of his Military manoeuvre sparked by sixty thousand Ukraine troops on his border enough was enough. The only thing he asked was that Ukraine did not join NATO again the West made moves to do just that. Given all of this it appears to me that Russia has the moral high ground and the West are trying for all they are worth for a third world war. I think that if NATO try to take Russia then Nuclear weapons will be used to the detriment of all ordinary people on all sides. The sane thing to do would be to make peace. However, since I am pretty much convinced the Globalists are clinically insane and have the mentality of two year olds it does not seem this is on their agenda. Though I hope I am very wrong. The military has been underfunded but there has also been a lot of wastage e.g. the billions spent on armoured vehicles that vibrate that much the troops in them were in no fit state to fight that have still not been modified to allow them to come in to service.

    Dear The Times,
The Thatcher/ Major Tory administration reduced the British Armed forces by 104,000 and the last Tory administration, Cameron/May/Johnson/Truss/ Sunak cabal, reduced the British Armed forces by 54,000 personnel.
The Tories were still disbanding regular infantry battalions in 2021 - whilst 'Five Eyes' intelligence was stating that Putin WAS intending a full scale invasion of Ukraine.
I know this for a fact because one of those battalions was MY BATTALION!
For contrast - when Labour took over in 1997 the British Army had 109,000 troops and when they left in 2010 the army STILL had 109,000 troops.
Regardless of what this Right-Wing Rupert says - the Tories caused this crisis in out military.
    Yours faithfully,
    A former British infantry soldier.

@@benghiskahn3673 OK I was a bit rhetorical. But, taking China as an example, there are other less hostile countries that can supply things, so China would loose a bit of market share to the other countries that don't get the same tariff. Then for expensive branded stuff like iPhones, there's a big margin to absorb higher costs meanwhile. So it's true that a tariff puts up prices and inflation but there are ways-around, and the threat of future increase is an influence over the other side as well. The more countries think about tariffs against China, the more China worries.
A separate rather nerdy detail point....

Strangely, our government still requires planning permission for things like solar panels that might free-up supplies of gas outside of Russia. Our government must have thought: "we will send weapons, we will impose sanctions, but a change in planning law is a step too far".

There are many of us who have left or are leaving because if they'd wanted to served in the Navy, that's who they'd have joined up with. If this posting is questioned the reply is, 'It's an order, you obey the order.'
Strangers have been allowed to muck about with the RAF. They dropped the term 'Airman' in favour of Aviator, why, because the term Airman was sexist and Aviator isn't. Someone has pointed out that the word Aviator refers to Men, Aviatrix, refers to women, and it didn't need to change in the first place.
They are in the process of removing the weapons trade and have reduced the trade to that below photographer. All the other trades are now supposed to carry out the weapons trade jobs. Then they have divided the trades into two groups, 'Light' and 'Heavy', then called everyone 'Specialist' after ensuring no one is a 'Specialist'.
As the RAF weapons trade is no longer a technical trade, the Army now carries out the Bomb disposal role, with no real understanding of aerial weapons.

What the Gov needs - and the Military needs (and we all need) is some straight thinking ... BEFORE spending any money! Please !!!

This was my comment immediately after Putin's exercise in Ukraine....
"Just watched a film "The Saboteurs”.
The Nazis invaded Norway in 1940.
In the film, one high up official in the Norway regime was having a conversation with the head of a Hydro company and he said this....
"The World wouldn't stop because of an occupation...Or a change of Government"
It struck me, the same could apply to Ukraine...
    “The World wouldn't stop”.....That struck a note with me…."
But here we are today. For the Ukrainians... Their World has changed drastically...
Wars are madness led by madmen.

Canadians have the same issue; reports continue to claim how low the recruiting is, at critical levels, but applicants take over a year to be approved and most simply drop out of the process due to frustration. A FULL revamp is needed in the UK, Canada, and anywhere else where this is an issue!

They need to open Service recruiting offices across the British Isles ! They also need to re-establish Army and Navy Youth teams to encourage local community activities such as Orienteering and Survival Activities. That is how I joined in 1965 !

The favourite targets of the belligerent are those whom they perceive to be weak and unable to protect themselves. Hence the mantras "if you want peace, prepare for war" and "peace through strength". We (the UK and EU) seem to have forgotten this wisdom and is exactly why we find ourselves in the situation we are in today.

What must be said is that Hamish de Bretton-Gordon should have his words listened to by all and everyone in Great Britain and especially at 10 Downing Street. Here is a person who believes in his country and sees the gaping holes in the security of the UK and who is pleading to the Prime Minister to understand that a great war is coming and that the UK is unprepared and ill-equipped and everything including young people wanting to enlist in the military is skewed to do the exact opposite. Let me take this moment to thank the TIMES RADIO team and wonderful support staff who work endless hours to get quality interviews out to your public and for those of us across the world, and to wish you all a Happy Christmas. I will leave you with the moment I knew Great Britain was a superpower in all but global recognition. One day, early in the war of Ukraine where Russia had invaded and was sending missiles into Ukraine and especially to Kiev, the Capital, where a desperate young man called Zelensky was President and in dire need of help, your former Prime Minister, the politically embattled and heavily criticized, Boris Johnson, fearlessly scorned Putin's threats and went to visit President Zelensky in Kiev and pledge unending and unwavering military and humanitarian and economic aid to Ukraine. I will never forget that after Johnson's declaration, Zelensky and Johnson decided to take a stroll on a Kiev high street to show Putin that Britain was in for the long run and not afraid to say it. While walking together, suddenly a meek and humble shopkeeper poked his head out of the slightly open door of his shop and said something to Prime Minister Johnson. Of course, not understanding the man, Johnson leaned over as they paused for a moment and asked President Zelensky what did the man say? Zelensky smiled for the first time since Johnson's visit, and he spoke. "He says thank you for helping us." You can say what you want, but those words traveled across Ukraine and gave 44 million people the will to fight on. You only need one friend in life it has been said, and you know you are going to win when The United Kingdom has your back.

In 1980 when I joined it took me 3 months, the army at that time was north of 200,000 soldiers. The cold war was in full swing and we considered ourselves a bit light on the battlefield if we had to meet those b'stards. God help us now guys, we do not have anywhere near enough.

I have read that UK Army/Navy/Air Force recruitment has been devolved to an independent commercial company, and that ever since this happened, recruitment has tailed off, largely, as HdBG says, because the process is so stupidly slow. Wouldn't this problem be relatively easy to fix?
