    Looks like this lens is currently backordered everywhere BUT if you're interested in purchasing one you should place an order ASAP to get your spot in line for this amazing lens!

      What makes these new lenses so "magical" is the shortened flange distance. It may seem like a small shift, but when it comes to optics it's huge. All of that space occupied by a DSLR mirror or the negative space created by an adapter is gone, and the back element is literally millimeters from the sensor. It's a big deal. It means much better sharpness, much better color, just much better optical quality in general… I personally am obsessed with my RF 70-200 2.8 which I upgraded to from the third generation EF version which came out not long ago itself. It's such a wild improvement I'm blown away. Even though that lens is a 2.8 and doesn't let in as much light, it has just as much of the "magic" you speak of.
      I had a 28-70 2.0 backordered from Canon that I'll never get now, and I'm still on the fence about getting it. I'm actually far more focused on studio lighting and am very strongly considering the 90MP R5s that will be announced soon. But it really was a tossup for me which I'll get next, the RF 85 1.2 DS or the 28-70 2.0… Finally decided it will be this lens…
      I'm mostly thrilled about you talking about it being super fast focusing. This was one thing I was a little questionable about since it's SO massive. The RF 70-200 2.8 is SO fast focusing it blows my mind. I'm so relieved to hear this one is too!

      There was literally one of these left in Australia after Canon burned their factory down, and I was so so lucky to purchase it yesterday. I'm super stoked.

      Does it not having image stabilization effect your images?

    • @JaredRibic
      @JaredRibic 3 роки тому +5

      @@MyNameIsKaitlyn - The Canon R5 and R6 bodies have In-Body Image Stabilization (IBIS) so this makes up for the lens not having image stabilization.
      I wasn't too worried about the lack of image stabilization because I had been using the EF 24-70mm f/2.8L lens which also has no image stabilization. This new 28-70mm f/2L lens is one stop faster which means my shutter speed could be one stop faster at the same ISO, so even on a body without IBIS (EOS R or EOS RP) this lens is still very functional.

    Your videos make so much more sense because many of us do not care in real life about corner sharpness at each and every aperture!! It’s about how it feels, what’s the look and character of the lens, does it make sense financially, is it practical… etc

    You convinced me enough to buy the R6 with the 28-70mm and I can attest that it’s the perfect setup for me. Took a while to get used to the weight but the image quality and convenience outweigh its flaws in my book. Thanks katelyn

    I shot my first 2 day job with this lens this week and I didn't even pull my 35 or 85 out of the bag for the entire 2 days. That's something I would have never thought possible. The 28-70 is a gem of a lens and will be part of my kit now for sometime I imagine. I think I'll still keep a 35 and 85 but I reckon all the heavy lifting will be done with the 28-70

    • @KatelynJames

    Lol. I remember watching your R6 review when you said you didn't "need" an RF lens any time soon. I was like "mmhmm. Wait until she tries the 28-70." Good on you for giving it a try. As attached as you are to your EF85 1.2, just wait until you try the RF version. Just in case you're looking for another business expense.

    • @KatelynJames

      I probably don't "need" any of my RF lenses but I wanted to give them a shot for education purposes! I own the RF version of the 50 and 85! I just need to test them out so I can make a review!

    This lens has lived on my R5 since I got it. It’s massively flexible in events and around the house and it has a certain “character” the 24-70 F2.8 (EF or RF) just doesn’t have. Combined with the technical advantages like you mentioned like autofocus, this lens is the gold standard zoom for Canon still photography i feel. Heavy and costly but very happy with mine too!!

  • @andrewdoeshair
    @andrewdoeshair 3 роки тому +7

    I feel this. I sold my EF 85, 100, 135, and 200 (all L series) to get the RF 70-200. When I was on a 5Diii I felt like I really needed the faster apertures both for focusing confidence and to keep that ISO low, but since I’ve had an R6 I feel like 2.8 is pleeeeenty. Although sometimes I miss having an overkill shallow DOF.

  • @mxilplict
    @mxilplict 3 роки тому +7

    Welcome to the 28-70 club - I have an R6 and that lens lives on my camera body (might as well be welded on) since it is so flexible, fast and sharp. Plus one lens costs less, weighs less, and takes less space in the bag than the lenses it displaces. I would sell my 24, 35, 50 and 85 EF L’s if I didn’t still need them for my cinema bodies.

      We did the same thing some 3-4 decades ago, when film photographers started shifting towards zoom lenses. That carried forward to the DSLR era and made the lens trinity a popular choice. But history repeats itself and driven by the bokeh trend, primes becomes fashionable again.

  • @NameNaameNameeNaamee
    @NameNaameNameeNaamee 3 роки тому +6

    Thanks for the review! I agree all the way.
    I got the 28-70 2.0L along with my R6 since I had the feel that by definition this lens would set a new standard. And it does indeed. It's worth every penny.
    I would even say it's downright affordable, since we are talking an industry first that's easily on par with a Zeiss lens optically, and those guys would charge way over 4000 bucks for a piece of kit like this (and people wouldn't even complain). So I actually applaud Canon for making something like this accessible to pretty much any professional shooter.
    Combined with the R6, it does indeed negate the need for prime lenses (I was a HUGE prime lens shooter, with a 17-40 4.0 L being the only zoom lens in my bag). And that's mainly because of two things:
    1) It's super sharp wide open and has pretty much zero CA, whereas on pretty much all prime lenses, even the super premium ones, you would need to stop down a bit anyways to get an image that is really sharp, if not for optical performance, then for the fact that your depth if field get's so super shallow. So as you said, you'd have to need a very specific environment to make a 1.4 work, like detail shots. In my experience, the 28-70 is so good at 2.0, that - apart from test charts in a lab setting, it is pretty much impossible to distiguish the wide open shots from the stopped down ones.
    2) The R5 and even more so the R6 are super good in low light, so you don't need an 1.4 aperture to get decent shots in low light conditions. You literally can get away with setting your auto ISO range at 100-10000 and if you are shooting JPEG, you'll be having a hard time even identifying the higher ISO shots by eye.
    So yes, it's heavy and it costs money, but boy it delivers. And yes, it only works on the RF mount, but that very fact is part of the key to the awsome performance. The much larger mount allows for a significantly closer placement of lens/sensor, hence giving you a much better image.
    Concerning travel, this lens might even make your bag considerably lighter, since you can leave a lot of other lenses at home. Add to that, that you might not need to buy those lenses in the first place, and there is your price argument gone as well. And in hectic/eratic conditions and dusty/wet environments, NOT having to change lenses while having that "prime" look can be invaluable. Oh, and it's also amazing for video!
    Currently, I am looking at the (also amazing) RF 70-200 2.8L and I'd like to have a super wide angle lens like the RF 15-35 2.8L. Writing this, with the RF zooms being as good as they are, I don't see myself going back to prime lenses for the foreseeable future.
    Enough bla bla, I agree, it is a fantastic lens!

    I recently bought this lens and I don't really like it. I am going back to my dual camera setup of 85mm and 35mm. I just didn't feel like this lens is worth 3000$ 28mm is a lackluster focal length and 70mm just doesn't cut it for me. The only 2 focal length that works for me with in this lens is the 35mm and the 50mm but at f2 that is equivalent to their cheap nify 50 1.8 and 35mm 1.8. I wanted to like this lens but will be selling it soon.
    I also wanted to add that I love your videos keep up the great work!!

    I got the RF 28-70mm f/2L lens a few weeks ago and *I LOVE IT* on my EOS R5 bodies. I debated between this lens and the RF 85mm f/1.2L but I already have the RF 85mm f/2 IS, so the versatility of this lens made more sense to me for now. I'll eventually get the RF 85mm f/1.2L but not until after getting the (soon to be announced) RF 135mm lens, because I don't like the new RF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS lens.
    Glad to see this video because I didn't expect to see you shooting with a zoom, nor would I ever see you actually enjoy shooting with a zoom. But as you say, this lens is definitely magical.
    I'm really glad I got it and even though it's super expensive, it's very well worth it and I'd do it all over again.

    I had a strong attachment to my 35mm 1.4 mark II. Kept it through my mark IV and kept it when I got the R and then now the R5. I rented the 28-70 2.0 and it blew me away. Sold off the 35, sold my 50 1.2 RF and now only have my 15-35 , 28-70 2.0 and 70-200. 28-70 is now my workhorse literally never comes off! We also made the switch. My wife uses the R5 with this lens for the entire day. I use the R5 with the RF 50 1.2 & RF 70-200. The 70-200 is insanely fast and great for second shooting and hybrid video work. It's been nice going from 9 lenses (between the two of us) to just 3. No swapping, no carrying a ton of gear with us, etc. (the 70-200 is so tiny and light, easily fits in my Holdfast bag that hangs on my Hold Fast Strap) Replaced the 24-70, 35, 50, 85, & 70-200 with this lens for my wife and the 45mp on R5 (gives us a lot of room to crop).
    If you've ever used the Sigma 85 Art like we did on a DSLR, the R5 and 28-70 is actually relatively the same weight and length. The 28-70 is definitely a bit wider though.

      @@KatelynJames One more thing I rarely find any Canon shooters talking about with the R, R5, & R6. If you're a portrait photographer, switch the AF setting under AF in menu, on page 5, in "Initial Servo AF pt".... to the middle selection. It is the small solid box within the larger solid box icon.
      This allows you to have the typical servo single AF point we're used to with the DSLR so you can move your focus point anywhere you want with the joystick or back of the screen. BUT, once that box is over a face and you half press, it automatically changes to Face/Eye detect on that person's face. This allows you to grab the exact face you want every time. You can also change the focus to maybe the flowers, ring, some other detail, etc. without having to change any settings. Just stop focusing on the person's face and move the box over the object you want to refocus onto.
      It's the best of both worlds and you'll never be yelling at your camera when it detects the wrong face during a processional, dance, group picture, action shot, etc. You have complete control over who's face you want detected.

I’ve thought about maybe selling the 50 1.2 but honestly it’s in a class of it’s own. It’s much sharper than the 28-70. Sometimes I just use that prime inside of big 3 pounder.

    It’s fun to see how excited you are about this lens! Have been advocating for it from early on owning it - definitely agree with just about everything you say about it! Completely replaces the 24-70 2.8, and like you said, that’s not a lens that is as loveable to use, while this 28-70 is :)

    We have a Nikon D750 DSLR and are looking to get a Nikon Z6ii mirrorless and we are worried that the DSLR is going to be hard to go back and forth between the two. If you're "weirdly attached" to your 85 you should try the 85 1.2 DS - I use it on an R5 and it's amazing. Some would argue it might look a bit unnatural ("too smooth"), but I love it. Just note that it's equivalent to a T2.0 (meaning you get the 1.2 blur/bokeh and then some - but the light coming through is "just" that of a F2.0 lens).

    I am not a Canon user, but this video was in my feed today so I checked it out.... subbed and looking forward to checking out more of your channel....
    Zooms faster than 2.8, while pribably expensive, could totally be a.game changer for a LOT of photographers... I could see a sweet 3 or 4 lens kit, with a 70-200/2.8(50-140 Fujifilm?), a zoom like this one, a single really fast prime like the 85 you speak of, or the 56mm Fuji, and either a super wide zoom, or a single wide-angle prime that is wider than the zoom, say a 16mm-ish ... but some f/2 or possibly faster zooms would be sweet.... this lens may opem the door for others to try similar builds... a 16-50/1.4-2 or something, even with variable aperture, but still faster than 2.8? Or....? The possibilities are endless, but ZOOM lenses faster than 2.8 are something I dream of having someday... they will likely be pricey, BUT, the versatility could offset part of the price, as well as the factor of eliminating 1 or 2, or even maybe 3 primes.... if I could get an f/2 zoom that covered 16-50mm or so, I would likely stop wanting 16mm, 23mm, and 35mm primes...and MAYBE forego the 56mm... if you can't tell, my future camera is likely to be the Fujifilm variety, Pentax just isn't keeping pace and though O have shot K-mount lemses since 35mm film days, I doubt my next body will be a Pentax, looking to mirrorless I think...
    Thanks for the video, and look forward to seeing more later this weekend... keep shining ...

But sometimes I had to use it because I was limited in space. And I would like to sell the 35 and the zoom 24-70 and buy the rf 24-70 f2. Katelyn - Glad you went ahead and got the 28-70 f/2! Back in October I told you it was my favorite RF lens because it can take the place of 3 primes without much compromise! It is a beast of a lens, but does it ever deliver results! I did my daughter's senior photos and they turned out amazing! I have another daughter I will do her senior photos this summer, so that is how I justified some of my purchase of both the R5 and the 28-70 f/2.
    One thing that might help some people is keeping an eye on the Canon website for that lens factory refurbished. I got my as a refurbished unit and saved over $400! You are at the mercy of them being in-stock, but if someone can be patient it is definitely an option.
    Thanks for the update and welcome to the RF mount camera and lens club! Who knows, you might even get another R6 for your 2nd camera or dare I say, an R5 and the R6 becomes the 2nd.
    Best Regards from DadsTalkTech!

    • @dadstalktech
      @dadstalktech 3 роки тому +1

      @@KatelynJames Just like you didn't need any of the RF mount lens features... 😉 We've been down the road together before...
      I get it, but if you haven't seen the images you can produce with the R5 I can assure you that you don't know what you are missing. For example, from a reach perspective, the R5 with the extra resolution you "don't need" would allow you to crop significantly with no loss in details. You may not always need the pixels, but I can tell you when you do and you don't have them there is nothing you can do.
      Another thing that might seem small, but I can edit photos while others are still transferring images to their computer. The CF Express Cards are lightning-fast and much more durable than SD cards. Yes, the R5 files are larger but the card is fast enough to more than makeup for it.
      There are many other advantages, but I also understand it is a cost justification issue for your business.
      Lastly, forgot to mention in my previous post that if you have any problems with the balance with the 28-70 f/2, the battery grip does help a bit with that.

    That is a BEASTY lens! Thanks for this great video! Something I'm worried about moving to the R6 is feeling the need to buy all new lenses instead of using the adaptor ring!

      You can TOTALLY use the adapter and EF lenses and get amazing results. You do not need RF lenses to shoot professionally. This lens is just SO unique, nothing like this has ever existed from Canon before!

      @@KatelynJames Thats so good to hear! Its just the niggling thought I'll have thinking "you should probably get RF lenses now" haha! I've only just bought the 50mm 1.2 and the 16-35, both EF. Terrible decision to make before then buying an R6 ha!
      You have definitely sold me on this 28-70!

    There’s one more RF mount magic lens... the 70-200 2.8L. I thought for sure I was going to get an 85 and 135 prime, but got the RF 70-200 2.8 instead. OMG. No, it’s doesn’t go down to 1.2, 1.4, or 2.0, but if you can step back just a little further and punch it out to 150-200 wide open... man... total magic. It’s also very good at 70-135. You could literally have just two lenses, the 28-70, and 70-200.

    Great video! I have been entertaining the idea of ordering this lens since the RF 35mm L is taking so long to come out. How do you like the lens on the wider end, specifically 28mm-35mm?

    I have a Canon RF 50mm f/1.8 and am curious if the canon RF 50mm f/1.2 is significantly better? I'd love to see a video comparing the two!

    I have a question... I am retiring from my photography business as a sole business owner as I can't do photography like I used to do my Rheumatoid Arthritis. I have a Mark III and was thinking of selling my camera, yet I am afraid to sell it as my 20-year-old daughter said she might want to take up photography. My question is would it be better to just have her take over my camera to begin, Or be better off to sell my camera and start her on something less expensive. I am not familiar with the R6 so I don't know if it is more expensive than the Mark canons. Thank you!

      I think giving her the Mark III would be a great place to start!

    I recently pulled the trigger and upgraded from an RP to an R6, a large part due to your previous review of it. I am so glad I did, because It has been an absolute dream to use.
    Now I just need to save up to buy a lens like this. I have been obsessed with fast zooms ever since I picked up a 18-35mm F1.8 and then later a 50-100mm f1.8 for my old crop sensor camera. But $3000 is just so much money for a lens, especially for someone who doesn't do this for a living. Honestly right now I am leaning more towards the 28-70 f2.8 as a compromise, but it's still fairly expensive. Part of me thinks if I'm already spending $2,300 what's another $700... But realistically $700 is still a lot of money.

      Glad you're loving the R6! Yes it's a tough decision. The 24-70 is definitely not cheap by any means. It really comes down to how often you prefer to shoot at 2.0 and if it's worth the extra money for that additional stop of light!
