Revopoint MetroX Global Marker and Accuracy Stress Test
I just got my Revopoint MetroX and I wanted to better understand how the error increases as you scan large objects. The scanner uses the retroreflective markers to align the scan data from each frame. As you move further away from the first scan, the "leap frog" error increases. I used a large piece of float glass to test this. The glass is very flat (ie. a plane). When you scan the full plate the resulting data should exactly fit to a plane. Typically because of the error, the data "potato chips". This is a stress test designed to check marker detection & tracking. It is not how you would actually scan a flat object.
Check out my video ( ua-cam.com/video/ZR7BsNMlMZQ/v-deo.html ) if you want a more detailed explanation.
In my MetroX test over 1.6M I got a 6mm error. If you best-fit the entire scan data, you get Max positive error 1.857mm and Max Negative error 0.911mm. The Std.Dev. of the fit is 0.626mm
Things I used:
* Revopoint MetroX 3D Scanner ( amzn.to/4gKZvow )

3D Printed RYOBI 18V 150Db Air Horn

With Football and New Years coming up, I thought I would make a portable air horn. I've seen several people scavenge old RYOBI impact drivers to make one. I didn't have one that I wanted to sacrifice and I didn't want to purchase a new one. So I designed and 3D printed one that uses an inexpensive horn compressor kit and a RYOBI replacement trigger The 3D Model is at: www.printables.com/model/1...

    Thank you for your feedback. The measurement deviation you're seeing is due to cumulative errors during continuous scanning. For larger objects, we recommend generating global markers using photogrammetry before scanning. It's also important to perform a closed-loop scan to reduce errors, completing a full circle to align starting and ending points.

    I was lucky with the CR Raptor. Very accurate. I have a Revopoint mini but never got good scans out of it. I avoid Revopoint now. They put out too many scanners. Had really bad experience with their kickstarter shipping too. They labeled the scanner wrong to save their customers tax money 😂 I had a very hard time getting it out of customs. Took me weeks and multiple mails to Revopoint to get correct paperwork for the scanner.

    So you put a sheet of thin glass on a wooden floor, covered it with something (paper? paint?), then created a plane out of a small part of that scan, extended that to cover and claim that scanner is inaccurate? You must be joking right? All this proves is that your FLOOR is not flat. At a 1600mm it only takes 0.215 degrees to produce 6mm error at the other end. Are you sure that plane you created is not 0.2 degrees off because your floor is not flat? Your video proves nothing.

    • @SerendipitySue
      @SerendipitySue 15 днів тому

      Yeah that’s what I was thinking until I checked the plate with a faro scan arm and it was indeed flat. Do you have access to a granite optical table you could repeat test on? I think the error is partly caused by the camera calibration. The field is not totally flat, it has a bit of a bowl shape.

    Looks really bad. Although not that surprising. The sensors are very noisy and pretty low resolution overall, plus the frames are not realigned in any way during post processing. Plus, the calibration process is restricted to a small glass plate, where even the tiniest deviation would amplify the further you move away from the center. This is problematic for many scanners, and especially low quality ones like this. A proper way to set up global markers would be to use well-calibrated photogrammetry backed with lidar data for scale, such as the one from iPhones. I'm gonna have to look into it once I get the scanner

    • @SerendipitySue
      @SerendipitySue 20 днів тому

      @@iFilipis this test is designed to see how well the marker detection & tracking are doing. You would not actually scan a flat surface like this. • @aerospacengineer1

    Love the video. I have a few of their products. I held out on this one knowing that they usually do an updated model a few years after the initial release. This model, though is something that I do have an interest in. A note, for a flatness test, the best way would be to create a best fit plane to the entire surface, then you would measure the bounding planes above and below that surface. The challenge with establishing a plane with the method used is that the best fit error becomes magnified by the ratio of the length sampled to the total length. So in this case, it would likely be around an 8-10x potential error multiplier.

    • @SerendipitySue
      @SerendipitySue 21 день тому

      @@aerospacengineer1 the problem with best fitting all the data is that it distributes the error and makes it harder to see. Constraining it at one end lets you see the curvature. Guess I should show both.

    • @aerospacengineer1
      @aerospacengineer1 21 день тому

      @@SerendipitySue I would say that this is actually inaccurately overstating the error. If you were to take a flatness measurement on a CMM, it would account for all the data, including modifiers for other reference planes. This is similar to the problem of having datum targets too close together for convenience rather than reflecting the actual usage of the interface.

    Maybe the markers need to be identified by more than one primary axis. Please try sweeping the calibration board as though you doing a conventional topology scan. Also of note is the limited number of samples (frames) you pulled. Give it 10 minutes or so when you get a part up there. And finally I think scanning in global marker mode first will be the default MO when you get to laser scanning parts, which you are probably doing right now ;) Please keep the videos coming!
