This is an event to remember Isamu Yoshii (1886-1960), a playwright and poet of the Myojo school who loved Gion and left behind many works. Geishas and maikos placed chrysanthemum flowers on a monument of poetry on the banks of the Shirakawa River in Gion. I will offer flowers.
The Kanikakuni Festival is named after a song written by Isamu Yoshii that goes, ``I miss Gion even when I sleep, and water flows under my pillow.''
It is held every year to commemorate November 8th, the day the monument was erected.
